In Nazi Billionnaires: The Dark History of Germany's Wealthiest Dynasties (Mariner Books, 2022), journalist David de Jong presents a groundbreaking investigation of how the Nazis helped German tycoons make billions off the horrors of the Third Reich and World War II—and how America allowed them to get away with it. In 1946, Günther Quandt—patriarch of Germany's most iconic industrial empire, a dynasty that today controls BMW—was arrested for suspected Nazi collaboration. Quandt claimed that he had been forced to join the party by his arch-rival, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, and the courts acquitted him. But Quandt lied. And his heirs, and those of other Nazi billionaires, have only grown wealthier in the generations since, while their reckoning with this dark past remains incomplete at best. Many of them continue to control swaths of the world economy, owning iconic brands whose products blanket the globe. The brutal legacy of the dynasties that dominated Daimler-Benz, cofounded Allianz, and still control Porsche, Volkswagen, and BMW has remained hidden in plain sight—until now. In this landmark work of investigative journalism, David de Jong reveals the true story of how Germany's wealthiest business dynasties amassed untold money and power by abetting the atrocities of the Third Reich. Using a wealth of untapped sources, de Jong shows how these tycoons seized Jewish businesses, procured slave laborers, and ramped up weapons production to equip Hitler's army as Europe burned around them. Most shocking of all, de Jong exposes how America's political expediency enabled these billionaires to get away with their crimes, covering up a bloodstain that defiles the German and global economy to this day. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.

Success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. I was never the most talented. I was never the smartest, but I was always willing to do the work. -Alison Quandt Westgate We're on the road this week! This interview with Alison Quandt Westgate was recorded at the Costello Athletic Center at UMASS Lowell www.goriverhawks.com soon after the school's student-athletes arrived back on campus. Known to her friends and colleagues as “Q” Alison is a former women's ice hockey champion and goalie coach. Off the ice, she's made a career for herself working in college athletics, first at her alma mater #bostoncollege and now at UMASS/Lowell as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Excellence. A champion for women's sports, she's a true believer in the transforming power sports can have on a person. Born and raised just outside of Boston, Alison grew up in a household full of sports lovers. Pond hockey was the game of choice in her neighborhood full of boys, so they put her in goal. Scrappy by nature, Alison says the key ingredient to her early success as an athlete was fearlessness: “I wasn't afraid to get down and dirty, to muck it up.” A stand-out player in high school, she was recruited by Boston College and skated with the women's hockey team throughout her college experience, winning countless awards and being named the 2006 Beanpot Tournament's outstanding goaltender. Her rich experience as an athlete has been a beacon for her philosophy as she guides student-athletes: “I lead by example,” says Alison. “I will never ask anyone to do something I would not do myself. I may not be very vocal about it, but you will see me walking the walk every day.” In her role at At UMASS/Lowell Alison oversees everything that touches a student athlete's daily life. 37% of the school's population are first-generation college students. “They grind,” says Alison. “They work for every single win and there is no replacement for hard work.” For 23 minutes of athletic inspiration, just hit that download button. #sports #womensicehockey #perseverence #studentathlete

Water is life's matter and matrix, and there is no life without it. Even the founding fathers of the US understood that water was essential to sustain life, with Benjamin Franklin being quoted as saying “When the well's dry, we know the worth of water.” Patients often present to veterinary hospitals with a dry well, and many of them may require diagnostics or surgery under sedation or anesthesia. You may have thought “I'll give twice the fluid maintenance rate to this patient”, but where did this value come from? How do we empirically create an appropriate fluid therapy plan for anesthetized patients? Today's guest on the NAVAS podcast, Dr. Jane Quandt, will guide our listeners through this very question. Dr. Quandt is a long-time veterinary educator at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and boarded in both Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine. With her expertise and unique perspective, we will cover a wide range of topics regarding fluid therapy in anesthetized patients, including using pulse oximeters to determine fluid responsiveness, how to use fluids to appropriately treat anesthesia-induced hypotension, when and should you use a colloid, how to use hypertonic fluids, and fluid resuscitating patients with elevated sodium values. So, water-ver you do, be prepared to get your ears wet with this in-flow-mative conversation all about fluid therapy! For more information on this episode's topic, we invite our listeners to check out the 2013 AAHA/AAFP Fluid Therapy Guidelines for Dogs and Cats, specifically the section on Fluids and AnesthesiaIf you like what you hear, we have a couple of favors to ask of you:Become a member at North American Veterinary Anesthesia Society (NAVAS) for access to more anesthesia and analgesia educational and RACE-approved CE content.Spread the word.

We talked about the Quandt family - for decades the controlling interest behind BMW - and their intimate links to Hitler's inner circle. In Nazi Billionnaires: The Dark History of Germany's Wealthiest Dynasties (HarperCollins, 2022), journalist David de Jong presents a groundbreaking investigation of how the Nazis helped German tycoons make billions off the horrors of the Third Reich and World War II—and how America allowed them to get away with it. Our guest is Jillian Fraser Quandt, Director of Business Development for MedSpa Marketing Solutions + Vector Solutions. We discuss how Vector Solutions got its start solving a problem that many businesses face: how to convert a lead to a sale? She talked to us about her experience with how she makes it easy for small businesses with no sales process or closing process, making it easier for small businesses to be successful in their marketing endeavors. She says knowing where the new leads come from is an important part of running a successful business, so you know what kind of advertising is working for you. We discuss businesses' need to be strategic with how they plan out their advertising and sales process. Businesses can save time and money through automation on Facebook to contact leads and schedule an appointment or a consult, but they may not have the budget for it yet. So what can a small business owner like you do instead? A good place to start is to sit down and develop a sales and closing process that will make your employees' jobs much easier. That way, they know exactly what they need to do when a phone rings, and it's a new client. Following up with leads can be a huge time sink, but if you have the right system in place, there is no need. And if you look at who is following up with the leads, so many business owners should become more hands-on in their lead generation. Taking a good hard look at your process is the most important thing. You probably love a staff member and they may be fantastic at certain aspects of the business, but they are not the best closer. You need to know your conversion rate and close ratios. Because the lead generation funnel gives you the assurance that your business will survive 30, 60, or 90 days out. Without a sales process that works and without good outsourcing for your marketing, you might try to sell your services with one hand tied behind your back. Sales processes help you work more efficiently and have better service delivery to your existing clients and potential leads. The best companies keep a plan in place to generate sales instantly, knowing the rate at which their time investment converts. They use tools and a plan, planning the best way to schedule their tasks in order to generate conversions. Key Takeaways Being smart about where your money goes and how you partner is much more beneficial than doing it on your own. You NEED a plan. Plan your leads. Plan your sales funnel. Plan your ad spend and plan your goals and tools.
