On episode 55 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Editor-In-Chief of InSession Film Dave Giannini to discuss the latest film in their Tony Scott series, Man on Fire (2004). Back in 1980, when Tony Scott was trying to make his first film, he grew fond of a book series written by author A. J. Quinnell about an American-born former member of the French Foreign Legion. He wanted to make it as his follow-up to The Hunger, but studios didn't think he had enough experience to make this movie work. Twenty years later, Scott finally got the chance to make his passion project, and alongside his frequent collaborator Denzel Washington, set out and made one of the defining films of their careers and one of the great action films of the 21st century. Updating the story for the protagonist John Creasy, we see a one-man death machine reborn looking for closure and peace after the abduction of the young girl he was in charge of is kidnapped. In doing this, Scott creates a cathartic, violent, uniquely visual experience very rarely found in modern cinema. Ryan, Jay, and Dave break down the film, the film's visual style, Denzel Washington's performance and where is ranks in his career, the emotionally beautiful ending, why Rotten Tomatoes is frustrating, if Creasy earns his redemption, and the complicated shout out to the country of Mexico in the end credits of Man on Fire. On today’s episode, we talk with John Creasy who is the Associate Pastor at The Open Door Church in Pittsburgh, PA. John also serves as the director of Garfield Community Farm, and has worked to create an ecologically diverse neighborhood farm on nearly three acres of land at the top of the Garfield neighborhood. This farm serves to educate the local church on our call as Christians toward environmental sustainability and to provide healthy organic produce to those of lower income in the Garfield neighborhood.

The time for love and happiness is over and now we are switching our feelings to anger and revenge with 2004’s Man on Fire.  Denzel Washington stars as John Creasy, a retired CIA assassin, who has taken a job as the bodyguard for Samuel Ramos’ young daughter Pita.  At first, Creasy doesn’t want to open up to Pita about his personal life or his past and rejects her attempts to become “friends”.  Eventually, they begin to bond over Pita’s swim training as Creasy assists her in overcoming her fear of the starting gunshot and to become a championship swimmer.  Once they have formed a close relationship, Pita is kidnapped in broad daylight while Creasy is gunned down as he tries to fend off the attackers.  This was the worst mistake they could have made.  Creasy recovers enough to hunt down those responsible for what happened and make them tell him everything they know before he kills them on his way up the ladder to “The Voice”.  This movie is a badass ride from beginning to end.  It has lots of stuff Mike and Matt like and a bunch of stuff Claire hates.  Denzel is awesome, so is Dakota Fanning and the rest of the cast does a pretty good job as well.  If you haven’t seen this movie go watch it now.
