If you've ever found joy in a perfectly rusted garden gate, an old Pyrex bowl like Grandma's, or the thrill of repurposing a forgotten item into something useful again—this episode is for you.In Season 3, Episode 9 of Funeral Potatoes & Wool Mittens, I head to rural Tracy, Minnesota, to visit with Sharon Hohler, the creative and kind-hearted owner of Homeless Treasures. Tucked away on an acreage just south of town, Homeless Treasures is a vintage wonderland filled with antiques, oddities, DIY-ready furniture, and Sharon's signature charm.Sharon shares how her passion for old things—and the people who love them—turned a simple Father's Day weekend yard sale into a thriving seasonal business that's now in its 14th year. She talks about the “junking angels” who helped her along the way, the stories that shoppers bring with them, and the magic of seeing an old item reimagined in a brand-new way.We also chat about our emotional attachments to belongings and the one item her husband says she cannot bring home anymore. And, of course, Sharon shares three of her favorite recipes, including the giant banana muffins she perfected after giving up on banana bread.Whether you're a DIY enthusiast, a vintage collector, or just someone who appreciates a good story and a quirky treasure, you'll love this heartwarming conversation with Sharon Hohler of Homeless Treasures in Tracy, MN.Homeless Treasures, Sharon Hohler ownerFacebook: Homeless Treasures 1964 230th Ave., rural Tracy/Currie507-227-1198antiques, vintage, furniture, unique treasuresHost and Producer, Staci MergenthalRandomSweets.com#ourSweetMidwestLifeWebsite randomsweets.comInstagram @potatoesandmittensInstagram @randomsweetsFacebook: Funeral Potatoes & Wool MittensFacebook Random SweetsPinterest @staciperryEmail: staci@randomsweets.com

Our next guests joined forces during the pandemic and started a virtual restaurant delivering elevated midwestern comfort food to peoples' doorsteps. Eve Studnička was curating an underground dinner series in her apartment called "dinner at the grotto" and Alexis Thomas-Rice had a catering company called Black Cat Kitchen. Together, they're striving to cultivate a relaxed ethos where everyone from any background can find solace over a great meal. They've recently been featured in Chicago Magazine's 10 Hottest Restaurants and Chicago Tribune's Top 100 Takeout. They're close to their goal of raising funds to help get their brick and mortar started. Many Midwestern towns host annual festivities in celebration of characteristics unique to their community—like the city celebration we're talking about today—the 32nd annual Honey Days in Bruce, South Dakota. Joining me for today's show are longtime parade emcee, Mary Bjerke, and her husband, Russ, and their daughter, Christianne Beringer. Mary shares the itinerary for the 3-day weekend of events, kicking off with KCountry 102.3's cookout in Museum Park at noon on Friday, July 28, and other traditional events like a parade and craft show, competitive activities like basketball, bean bags, volleyball, horseshoes, and baseball, to the 5K run, walk or pedal where Denise Ulvestad shares her beloved honey protein energy balls, a kids bike parade, Legion pancake breakfast, car show, street dance, yard games, cow pie bingo, and wrapping it all up with the town vs. country softball tournament on Sunday evening. If you've listened to episode 8 of Funeral Potatoes & Wool Mittens, you already have Mary's meatloaf recipe. Today, the family is sharing 5 recipes with honey as a main ingredient—sloppy joes, BBQ ribs, fudge sauce, barbecue sauce (all from a South Dakota honey cookbook I will be eagerly scouring antique and thrift stores for), plus the Greek Loukamades recipe Mary and her family used the year they won the honey bake-off competition. Recipes and photos they share are on random sweets dot com, along with links to Bruce Honey Days on Facebook. https://randomsweets.com/bruce-honey-days-2023-and-community-cookbook-honey-recipes/ We'll hear all things Bruce Honey Days from Mary, Christianne, and Russ. I'm talking all things summer gardening with two special guests—Lynn Darnall and her daughter Sarah Alfano, owners of Medary Acres Greenhouse—a 71-year-old, third-generation business in Brookings, South Dakota. We cover a variety of topics, from basics like watering and deadheading, to the value of mulching tomato plants, how to properly cut stems so you can bring the beauty of your flowers indoors, natural ways to keep plants healthy, and how to divide peonies. And when I ask how to protect my plants and vegetables from critters like rabbits, raccoons and deer, Lynn surprises me with a super special spray that was hard for her to say. I don't want to think about it yet, but we talk about how to prepare for winter, from what to do with our pots and perennials, to a fun way for plant lovers to get through the cold months. If you've listened to at least a few episodes of Funeral Potatoes & Wool Mittens, you know we always find a way to talk about food and today is perfect because what's better than eating foods fresh from your garden? Sarah shares a mocktail recipe with a fresh herb, and a salsa recipe and Lynn has a secret natural sweetener up her sleeve—the stevia plant. Lynn and Sarah leave us with gardening advice for novice gardeners and the more seasoned gardeners who may have been around long enough to remember what gardening was like in the late 1960s. This episode is so full of information, you'll learn about rhizomes, nubs and a beer fridge. Fresh drop from the crew! We are so happy to be joined by Eve Studnička and Alexis Rice Thomas of Funeral Potatoes and this just feels too good. Eve and Alexis talk us through their journey from a pandemic passion project to their process of fundraising for their brick and mortar restaurant to the importance of not taking yourself too seriously. The dynamic duo also discuss sustainability within their passions and share their authentic thoughts on the impact of ego and creating a space based on inclusivity. This episode brilliantly balances the inspirations of Eve and Alexis while also highlighting the realities of the industry that they have been exposed to. We had too much fun here and we are so excited for what's to come for Funeral Potatoes. Also - support the homies here on their journey to opening their cozy cafe. A solid thank you to Blind Barber Chicago for hosting this necessary conversation, Ritual Zero Proof for their support, Cheyenne English for the beverage offerings and Quari Ice for the product. See you soon, The T o S Crew
Funeral Potatoes is composed of Eve Studnička and Alexis Rice -- they're industry veterans from the catering world who opened a virtual kitchen during the pandemic, and now they're transitioning into a full-on brick and mortar. Today, we're talking with Eve, who walks us through their origin story, shining a light on some of the more unconventional sides of hospitality in our city that are really well embraced. We're talking about how they chose their fantastic name, drawing a vibrant cross-section of society when putting on an underground dining series, bread storage techniques, and so much more. Make sure you stay till the end for morel-hunting tips, too. We also wanted to shout out the Funeral Potatoes fundraiser -- they're trying to raise $60k by January 1st of next year to help cushion the startup costs of opening a physical location, and their monthly goal grows every month. Stop by and offer them some generosity -- you won't regret it.
It's time to talk all things funeral potatoes. Cheesy hash brown casserole has more names than any dish I know—funeral potatoes, hash brown casserole, cheesy hash browns, party potatoes, company potatoes, Cracker Barrel potatoes, hash brown baked potatoes, taco potato casserole, hash brown potatoes, company potato casserole, and many others. In addition to sharing our recipes and the stories behind them on this episode, I share everything from what the common ingredients are and how people change things up like adding taco seasoning or not using cheese, to how to prep, cook and store funeral potatoes, how to make them in advance, and how much to make for a crowd. For the last month or two, I've been asking you to share your recipe for funeral potatoes or hash brown casserole with me. From the strawberry cocktail on our hotel rooftop bar and the biggest breakfast burrito I've ever seen, to memorable Mexican food in Scottsdale, to the buffalo wings Jason has been talking about for years and the burgers at a place he assumed was long ago swallowed up by redevelopment around the ASU campus—we talk about it all. Even the place with amazing philly cheesesteak sandwiches and shuffleboard, and this isn't your Love Boat shuffleboard. Because my favorite birthday cake frosting is a recipe my mom has made for many of my 50 birthdays, I asked her to share her cocoa fudge cake and snow frosting, also known as 7-minute frosting, recipes. I was surprised to learn that both recipes came from her mom, my grandma Janet, when my mom and dad got married in 1969. We walk through the steps to making snow frosting, and how humidity affects the outcome. And it was never a birthday party without my mom's barbecue meat on white buns. For this holiday season, we welcome Joe Wood to discuss the origins of secular Christmas traditions...kissing under mistletoe, putting up Christmas trees, hanging lights, etc. Be merry and be safe!
We may have the same recipe but for some reason they all turned out a little bit differently when we arrive to the church gathering. Do we shun the other because they put corn flakes on top instead of Ritz crackers? How can we maintain unity to just love one another and help each other return to our Savior- Even if we do things just a little bit differently than the way our neighbor does it? If you are not one year not mine.

Easter Sunday Thoughts. All the feels. Exmormon ramblings. I am blaming this one on Funeral Potatoes, Andrea Bocelli, and Christian Music.
This week, Shawn Rapier and Ken Craig are joined by Professional Comedian Steve Soelberg and Dietitian and Nutritionist Zach Cordell. Zach is also the host of the Latter Day Saint Dietitian podcast. What are the dos and don'ts of ward potluck dinners? Is there a natural progression from casserole to crock pot to instapot? What do you do for Sunday family dinners? Should you buy Spam? The cheaper version of Spam? Pumpkin spice Spam? And of course, we talk Jello and Funeral Potatoes...because we have to.
Get your dishes ready, the home of Sophisticated Tomfoolery is back to body these other podcasts. This week the crew talks about if Nas should have never found these lost tapes, what are the best locations to catch a Cougar, and what happens when the wedding proposal goes horribly wrong. Big shout outs to Tillie Marrie's dedicating something big to one of the gents, Chef Dos and DaSlice for getting interview love, and this weeks #sharedopeshit is another Buffalo banger. It’s Thanksgiving week, and Americans’ thoughts — and stomachs — turn inevitably to food. What better time, then, to explore whether Latter-day Saints have any special connection to food or, at least, certain foods? After all, we’ve all heard about funeral potatoes and green Jell-O. But the faith also has a health code that counsels members on what they should and should not eat or drink. What role does it play? Here to discuss this topic is Christy Spackman, who holds a doctorate in food studies and teaches at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society.
In the second episode of 2 Girls, 1 Scaredy Cat, Monica and Emilee let Isabel know all about Chandra Levy's murder and the deaths of Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers. There also might be some special discussion about potatoes.
Head of Pakistan's Higher Education Commission, Tariq Banuri shares the importance of education in a country where schools are targeted by the Taliban. President of Augason Farms, Mark Augason explains "funeral potatoes." Mark Winston and Renee Saklikar on why we should be "Listening to the Bees." Peter Guest of Cardiff University on the Hoxne Hoard. Cristal Glangchai shares her book, "Venture Girls." Rick Steves on his book "How to Leave Your Baggage Behind."
This week, Lance must answer for his former people’s crime of a product called Funeral Potatoes, which is the most morbid side dish ever. Josh patches up some previous discussions about bonding agents and rappers whose name he doesn’t know how to say properly. Advice kicks off with an incredibly awkward social situation that makes Josh want to hide in a corner and cringe constantly. Lance and Josh try to dance around the PC implications of this question and not enrage a portion of the population. Faye asked a question about how to deal with an assistant that is screwing up her stuff. We all know what Lance’s solution would be. Josh, as always, takes his leadership cues from Greg Popovich, the surly coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Reddit gives us a little gem this week about an itchy tooth. Would Preparation H work? What does it taste like? Cool mint, I bet. Flavor blasted!!!!
DNA test reveals iffy behavior by a former mission president; full review of new Stretch Cotton garments; unnecessary singles ward mockumentaries; post-General Conference priesthood purges!

Comedian and Mayor Jeremy Nunes is joined by RSJ as they take on a prominent local politician! Plus, we laugh about Wrestlemania, the condom challenge, and funeral potatoes! We interview longtime Alabama Assistant Coach Lips McKimmee, and don't forget the Small Town Breakdown! This swear free comedy show is a free download!
It's a beautiful day when a huge national chain makes what they think is a sure bet in March Madness... and loses. Big time. So three cheers for Little Caesar's, who made good on the best served up a ridiculously huge amount of free pizza today. Hope you got yours. Thinking of summer jobs yet? There's a great one for a lifeguard at a Rhode Island resort- which happens to be all-nude. An adorable Chinese gent applied to an all-women's college in Beijing because the female population is getting scarce and the man just wants a girlfriend! And help with his homework. And off ALL THINGS- some frozen food giant is selling a "Funeral Potatoes" kit. HEY! Those are OUR funeral potatoes! Soul food stolen right out from under us....
Unbutton your pants and take a load off as the gang recaps Thanksgiving. A question about work, life, and boss relationships is tackled - and we receive a listener update on a question from episode 8. Highlights include regional food, Massachusetts law, wedding memories and the sound of wine pouring. I'm ready for a nap.
Religion is a personal choice. How parents approach it with their kids should be as well. Amen. Heather is an atheist, John is an agnostic and their kids are little horned heathens. Just kidding. The kids are doing fine. So how do they raise kind, balanced humans without religion at the center of everything? Carefully, respectfully, and with the memory of funeral potatoes and Dan Quayle. And that's a wrap. After nearly a year producing this podcast together, Kate & I say our final goodbyes. We talk about how our views on feminism and women in Mormonism have changed since we started, and where we stand in our thoughts on the Gospel and on God. (Spoiler alert: we like them both very much.)To all of our listeners, however few of you there might be, thank you for tuning in. It means the world to us that we have had supporters of this project since the very beginning. You're the reason we do this, and it makes us really happy to know that what we've said has resonated with those of you who listen. Thank you, thank you, thank you.And before we go, we do have an announcement to make."Feminism and Funeral Potatoes" is not, in fact, ending. Brooke, Kate's younger sister, will be joining me in the studio starting in January as we finish The Bishop's Wife and continue to chat all things lady-related. So come back after Christmas; we're excited to see you all!- m
When Michelle buys a party dress, no matter what...she wears that party dress. This DDC Podcast is filled with marriage, pastor cousins and that old side dish classic..."Funeral Potatoes". It's a heartwarming and riveting episode about major loss and marital gains.
AND WE'RE BACK. After a hiatus much longer than we anticipated, we've brought back Feminism and Funeral Potatoes. We introduce our new book, The Bishop's Wife, and recap General Conference. Put those headphones in and take a listen--we've returned in all our glory and are excited to have our listeners chillin' with us once again.

I included Dirty Diet Coke in this episode title because ever since Jenna talked about it on the show, I can't stop thinking about it. I am to Dirty Diet Coke as Greg Heller is to Mormon Funeral Potatoes. Also, I've decided to write these show descriptions in a different way. What do you think? Lemme know. I can easily go back to taking myself out of the description however let's be real, I am writing these words. Anyhoozles, Jenna and Al and Greg were back on this episode and joined Jeff, Daniel and me for a chat about almost getting run over by a bike on the sidewalk (while I was texting), tap dancing, Adoption vs. IVF and people being kinda dickish online, Greg's fishing and surfing trip, bathroom habits, peach air freshener, the extendo version of The Fruit Song, Greg's dream about Anderson Cooper, shaking hands with the unemployed (i.e. masturbation), Pretty Little Liars, Gilmore Girls and more. Plus we did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.
In this podcast I talk about funeral potatoes and give a family recipe.
Dan attends a Mormon funeral, Chick-Fil-A, an Air Force chaplain leaves Southern Baptists over gay marriage, a recent poll shows that Americans don't relate to Romney's faith, and more stupid explanations for why James Holmes opened fire in Aurora.
The couple discusses fake Christmas trees, gift exchange name draw, losing teeth, and possibly the last podcast before number 3 arrives.
