This episode features Dr. Karen Hill. Karenna'onwe (Gaw-law-naw-oo-way) – Dr. Karen Hill is Mohawk from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. She is the mother of two sons and step-mother to five daughters. She currently has 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons. She completed medical school in 2003 and Family Medicine Residency in 2005 - both from McMaster University. Prior to her medical career Karen worked to write curriculum and develop post-secondary programming at Six Nations Polytechnic, an Indigenous led post-secondary institution in her home community.  Karen's passion is to see Traditional Indigenous Knowledge return to the centre of life for Indigenous people across Canada for the purpose of invoking healing. In Karen's book ‘The View From Breast Pocket Mountain' before I even got to page 50 she had introduced me to her young relationship with Joseph Heller, author of Catch 22, hanging out with Neneh Cherry (childhood hero of mine). Now, I am a sloooooow reader - I like that about myself - I read about 10 books a year and these days listen to more, but I decided to purchase Karen's book and dip in before our conversation. I couldn't put it down. From the first page, that we don't reveal - it has you hooked. And hooked you should be. I am genuinely changed through our conversation - I just loved listening to her talking about being a mother and taking the next steps, humbling herself to being both inside and outside a culture and living a full life in the Japanese countryside. Karen is beautiful and one of the most wonderful things I love about being a woman is how we can traverse with ease across intelligent meaningful conversations with depth and skill to talking about beauty and today was no exception - before we hit record, we both paused and topped up our lipstick! We didn't even touch on the fact that Karen almost became a dancer and taught modern dance and at the end of the conversation, Karen reads from her novel; a wonderful chapter about her relationship with her neighbours - I mean let's just drop MC hammer in here shall we (I also drop a tasty tidbit in here about my history with the Hammer). In terms of brilliance - you can't touch this. (See what I did there?) The questions we DON'T have about our parents and how many stories live in our imagination We talk about imagination and living in the past and the burden of creating anxiety in our fantasies - brilliant coaching fodder! Curiosity and pragmatism She was raised in a time when there was no imaginings about not respecting a parent. It was simply not an option The power and influence of good teachers and mentors and how important the people who will see and witness your potential are. 23-year-old Pamela Miller was last seen on May 29th, 1989 in Leesville, Louisiana. Her car was found outside of her boyfriend's house, but police found no evidence of what happened to Pamela. The next year, 15-year-old Tammy Call went missing on February 20th, 1990 after apparently skipping class at Leesville High School. Both Pamela and Tammy were eventually found dead. The police noticed a number of similarities between the two cases but struggled to develop any leads. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the disappearances and murders of Tammy Call and Pamela Miller. The case turned when police developed a lead in the 1988 case of the murder of Karen Hill who disappeared near the Fort Polk military base. Samuel Galbraith, a soldier stationed at Fort Polk between December 1987 and June 1990, was convicted of Karen Hill's murder. Could he be responsible for the murders of Tammy and Pamela as well? 23-year-old Pamela Miller was last seen on May 29th, 1989 in Leesville, Louisiana. Her car was found outside of her boyfriend's house, but police found no evidence of what happened to Pamela. The next year, 15-year-old Tammy Call went missing on February 20th, 1990 after apparently skipping class at Leesville High School. Both Pamela and Tammy were eventually found dead. The police noticed a number of similarities between the two cases but struggled to develop any leads. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the disappearances and murders of Tammy Call and Pamela Miller. The case turned when police developed a lead in the 1988 case of the murder of Karen Hill who disappeared near the Fort Polk military base. Samuel Galbraith, a soldier stationed at Fort Polk between December 1987 and June 1990, was convicted of Karen Hill's murder. Could he be responsible for the murders of Tammy and Pamela as well? And you get to listen in on it :-) She’s an author of 30 children’s books, mom, grandmom and cancer survivor. She is also the executive editor and executive assistant to author/pastor Max Lucado, who may or may not make a guest appearance on the episode ;-) Karen shares about losing her father, mother, brother and a sister and how God can use our grief and suffering. We talk about questions we have for God and how doubt is a part of faith. We also talk about Sabbath rest, mentorship, parenting and much more.
