On this edition of Parallax Views, investigative journalist Ken Silverstein returns to the show hot off the major story he broke for The New Republic last week: "Off Leash: Inside the Secret, Global, Far-Right Group Chat | The New Republic". Ken has blown the lid off a secret chat group created by Erik Prince, the founder of the controversial private military company Blackwater, that includes a who's who of influential figures of the global right-wing including Congressman Ryan Zinke, Congressman Mark Green, Tucker Carlson, Gen. Michael Flynn, and many others. Silverstein's reporting on this provides an insight into where a number of major figures, including some with intelligence and military connection, stand in 2024 behind-closed-doors on issues ranging including Iran, the Israel-Hamas War/Gaza War, Israel/Palestine, MAGA vs. the Democratic Party, U.S. foreign policy, and much, much more. He's found communications that reveal what friend of the show, American Conservative contributor, and Senior Advisor at the Quincy Institute Kelley Vlahos describes as a "batshit crazy chat group that includes Erik Prince, Lara Logan, and every rightwing grifter, politician, influencer, ex-military psycho" that want to "nuke, napalm, and 'take out' everyone." There was even discussion in the group of rounding up the American right's domestic enemies for Nuremberg-style tribunals. And, on the U.S. foreign policy front, there were calls for covert assassination of political leaders from countries seen as adversarial to the U.S. There were even inclinations in the chat group towards the idea of using nuclear weapons against Gaza. There's also some opaque discussion of Erik Prince having "the right people in place" to deal with Iran, which many of the members of Off-Leash have hawkish foreign policy views on, and some rather interesting discussion pertaining to the plane crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. Talk of the need for a MAGA "revolution" and fighting against a cabal of Marxists, Islamists, and globalists that many members of the chat view as destroying the U.S. and Western civilization are also prominent in the communications that Silverstein uncovered. We'll discuss all of this and much more in the conversation, but its highly recommended you consult both Ken's original report on this for The New Republic AND his Washington Babylon Substack which will be covering this further going forward. You'll also hear us discuss Donald Trump and domestic repression, Russiagate, the RFK Jr. connection to Off-Leash, Ken's thoughts on President Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump, and much, much more.

Platinum-linked green hydrogen set to be world's 'new oil', Forbes article highlights

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. There's no climate solution without hydrogen. It's the missing piece of the clean energy puzzle, says a global CEO-led initiative that brings together leading companies with a united vision. From 13 leaders at its World Economic Forum launch in 2017, the Hydrogen Council has ballooned to 150 multinationals companies representing the entire value chain of hydrogen, which is planet earth's most abundant element, as well as being renewable and non-polluting. "We need to embrace hydrogen as a global energy solution now more than ever," it is being stated by the council, amid hydrogen development taking place left, right and centre across Asia, Europe, the Americas and to a lesser but moderately advancing extent in Africa. "The energy transition is happening faster than many people (including me!) dared hope," Microsoft luminary Bill Gates stated in an article after visiting a Texas company in which the platinum- and South Africa-linked AP Ventures is invested. Meanwhile, Forbes magazine's contributor on energy and climate Ken Silverstein comments that it is just a matter of green hydrogen getting its legs for it to become the 'new oil' - to replace the energy source that currently drives the global economy. As a result, countries are forming international hydrogen coalitions to position themselves for that future and many are looking to hydrogen giving them energy independence and sovereignty. What must be noted is that the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers that produce green hydrogen most efficiently benefit from the very special attributes of Southern Africa's platinum group metals, as do the PEM fuel cells that turn that green hydrogen into the cleanest of clean electricity that can not only power buses, bikes, bakkies, cars, cargo carriers and ships better than anything else can but can also provide clean, green electricity in stationary form to, you name it - homes, commercial buildings, factories, farms, and industry as a whole. Forbes reports that the United Arab Emirates, which is targeting a 25% global market share of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, is joining forces with Germany to expand its portfolio, while Japan is converting fossil-fired plants into hydrogen-based plants and South Korea is setting aside tens of billions of dollars to expand its hydrogen infrastructure and build a fuel cell base. The European Union is fast-tracking 65 hydrogen projects after signing an energy infrastructure list into law, Hydrogen Insight reports. Australian company Fortescue has opened an electrolyser manufacturing facility in Gladstone, Queensland, that has an automated assembly line, the World Platinum Investment Council reports. Fortescue has also unveiled a joint venture with Morocco-headquartered plant nutrition and phosphate-based fertiliser supplier OCP Group, which aims to supply green hydrogen, ammonia and fertilisers to Morocco, Europe and international markets. In the UK, a platinum-using PEM fuel cell for cars, the smallest to date, has been developed by Intelligent Energy. Hydrogen South Africa at North-West University embarked on building dedicated rapid prototyping, testing and training facilities for water electrolysis that generates green hydrogen. The 15 000 m2 advanced manufacturing facility, constructed and fully commissioned in just over two years, will have capacity to produce over 2 GW of PEM electrolyser stacks a year. The Japanese government has revealed a multitrillion-yen plan to develop a regional aircraft powered by next generation technology such as hydrogen. Newsbreaks on the outlook for the hydrogen economy are regular and the momentum towards making green hydrogen competitive and developing human resources to meet the needs of green hydrogen is building strongly. Twelve scientists from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries will head to Germany in May, where they will have an opportunity to obt...

We begin with a discussion of the Israeli bombardment of Gaza that has occurred in response to the Oct. 7th Hamas attack and has incurred a terrible loss of Palestinian civilian lives. Ken is openly calling it a genocide. We discuss why as well as his feelings about all of that has occurred in the past few months with regards to Israel/Palestine from his perspective as an antifascist Jew. We then switch to number of different topics including the role Ken played in publicizing and popularizing the now infamous photos of the recently deceased Henry Kissinger seemingly picking his nose in public and eating his boogers. We also revisit the story of Ken's late friend/collaborator, former Counterpunch head honcho, and Village Voice "Beat the Devil" columnist's Alexander Cockburn's troubles with the Israel Lobby. We look at this story in the context of criticism of Israel in the current day and fears of criticism being shutdown. Before closing out Ken tells us about his latest story for The New Republic, Did "Bob Menendez's Donors Know They Were Paying for $64 Steaks?", and how politicians live the luxurious high life thanks to the failures of campaign finance law.

Join Kyle, Ardon, and Alec as they dive into the story of David Hahn, also known as "The Atomic Boy Scout"! David Charles Hahn, sometimes called the "Radioactive Boy Scout" or the "Nuclear Boy Scout", was an American nuclear radiation enthusiast who built a bastardized version of a nuclear reactor, in his backyard, at the age of seventeen. A scout in the Boy Scouts of America, Hahn conducted his experiments in secret in a backyard shed at his mother's house in Commerce Township, Michigan. Hahn's goal was to build and demonstrate a homemade breeder reactor. While he never managed to build a reactor, in August 1994 Hahn's progress attracted the attention of local police when they found radioactive material in his vehicle that troubled them during a stop for a separate matter. When Hahn warned them that the material was radioactive, the police contacted federal authorities. While the incident was not widely publicized initially, it became better known following a 1998 Harper's Magazine article by journalist Ken Silverstein. Friends,There are numerous critical healthcare reframes in this week's episode. First, what Dr. Silverstein makes abundantly clear is that the senior leadership team at ChristianaCare is fully comitted to accelerating the shift to value based payment. Second, they are committed to greatly expanding the use of virtual care as a  primary mode of care. Third, they are focused on health outcomes vs healthcare delivery. Underlying these three patient-centered goals is another profound reframe, the notion that in order to achieve the quadruple aim, provider organizations must form vertical integrations and create complementary collaborations with other types of stakeholders in healthcare - such as payers and retailers. Our guest today, Ken Silverstein, is the Chief Physician Executive at ChristianaCare. He previously served as chair of ChristianaCare's Department of Anesthesiology, Medical Director of Perioperative Services and as Chief Medical Officer. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University, his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and his MBA from the University of Delaware. Dr. Silverstein was a resident and a fellow in anesthesiology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He completed his clinical fellowship in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School. In this episode, we'll learn about:The 10 year value-based collaborative agreement that ChristianaCare and Highmark have launched together. The 5 major “vehicles” that ChristianaCare & Highmark are planning to deploy within their collaboration. The guiding “partnership principles” that are being used to create a relationship-centered approach to this synergistic collaboration. The fascinating independent spin-off virtual primary care practice that ChristianaCare is building out with Highmark, that greatly improves the efficiency and effectiveness of care. At the beginning of our conversation, Ken states, “we created a new company and the intent is to completely transform healthcare.”  That bold remark speaks volumes about the visionary leadership at ChristianaCare. Another statement which gripped me was the fact that the ChristianaCare leadership team is discussing Clayton Christenen's ‘dilemma zone'', which the folks at ChristianaCare have relabelled as the “commitment zone”. The point of the concept is that in order to transition to a value paradigm and realize a long-term gain, leadership must accept a short-term loss. It's amazing to see hospital leadership thinking and acting in this way. But even more amazing is the fact that their Chief Financial Officer was the one who introduced this concept to the leadership team. In our correspondence prior to the interview, Ken wrote that American healthcare is “facing an apocalyptic forecast…”.  It's a disconcerting pronouncement from a seasoned physician executive.  But, what was concerning for me was that I had heard this very same comment from two other physician executives in the prior week. During our interview, I asked Ken what he meant by this statement. He went on to discuss issues such as the worsening unaffordability of healthcare, fragmentation of care, and inappropriate overutilization. He also passionately talked about the unacceptable inequities and disparities in healthcare, using Delaware as an example.  In Wilmington, the difference in life expectancy - what Ken referred to as the “death gap” - between white communities and black communities only 2 miles apart is 16 years! He punctuated this statistic by asking how that is acceptable to anyone. The situation may seem dire but I have to say that I have never been more hopeful, more inspired and more encouraged about the future of healthcare than I am today. The reason stems from listening to leaders like those at ChristianaCare who are not just speaking the rhetoric of reframing, but are taking the very concrete steps necessary to create a new and better healthcare. They are making the painful trade-offs required, and are investing in a better future. They are, as Simon Sinek would put it, playing the generative "long game". ChristianaCare is making a demonstrable commitment to creating a value-based future. They are aligning their resources with their rhetoric. They are doing this not because it's easy or safe. They are doing it, as Ken states, “because it's the right thing to do, period.” Until Next Time, Be Well.Zeev Neuwirth, MD

On this edition of Parallax Views, we get a "State of the Media" address from the veteran muckraking journalist Ken Silverstein of Washington Babylon. Ken has a lot of criticism for the approach of the press in the era of Trump, even though he himself has a great deal of contempt for Donald Trump and the way the current sitting President has attacked journalists over the course of the past four years. Before getting into that, however, Ken gives a background on how he became involved in journalism and his mentor Alexander Cockburn of Counterpunch fame (although it should be noted that Ken founded Counterpunch prior to Cockburn's involvement). From there we delve into: - Ken's thoughts on social media; the uproars over Matt Taibbi's recent op-eds; thoughts on what's been called "cancel culture" - Is there a lack of accountability in journalism?; the strange story of an Iranian who was asked to become a spy for the U.S.; the Democratic Party's movem right especially since the Bill Clinton Presidency and Rahm Emanuel's comments about 2020 being the "Year of the Biden Republican"; Ken's thoughts on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and "The Squad" - "The Trouble With Jeffrey: On Trump, The Atlantic, Goldberg and Cannon Fodder", Ken's recent piece on Jeffrey Goldberg's Atlantic piece alleging, vis-à-vis anonymous sources, alleging Trump's disrespect of troops at a cemetery; Ken's issues with Goldberg's piece and that fact that John Bolton did not corroborate the story; Goldberg's argument for why the sources needed to be anonymous; Goldberg's history of neocon warmongering during the Bush Administration and the Iraq War - The Donald Trump/Stormy Daniel affair and the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky; the focus should be on power imbalances and hush money not the sex with porn stars - Trump's fights with the media and vice versa; Trump being seen as "authentic"; the media's strange focus on matters such as Trump's eating habits - Has the press coverage of Trump been reckless at times?; Ken's thoughts on the Russiagate story - Ken's controversial take on the death of Jeffrey Epstein as outlined in his piece "The Jeffrey Epstein Non-Conspiracy Theory"; Ken clarifies that he does think there's questions about the Epstein case but questions the conspiracy narrative around his death This Episode Brought to You By:The War State:The Cold War Origins of the Military-Industrial Complex and the Power Elite, 1945-1963byMichael SwansonofThe Wall Street Window

If the idea of going 'off-grid' excites you, then perhaps now is a great time to be doing it. We live in an era where the cost of items such as solar panels is continually dropping and this is juxtaposed with fossil fuel reserves that deplete day by day. While you may even be forced off-grid if you move to a remote location, does it make sense going off-grid if you have perfectly good access (for example, in a town or village)? And with different grids -transport, gas, water - which is the easiest to unplug from?! In this discussion (which was one of our Google+ Hangouts) we discuss some of the issues surrounding going off-grid. The Panel Mike Coe, who lives in the Cropthorne Autonomous House (and was our guest in episode 54). Paul Scheckel, author of The Home Energy Diet and The Homeowner's Energy Handbook. When Harper's Magazine editor Ken Silverstein went undercover to recruit Washington lobbyists to help improve the image of Turkmenistan, a corrupt foreign government with appalling human rights abuses, K-Street firms laid out plans to get the job done. What does it say about the state of influence-peddling in Washington? Bill Moyers gets the inside story from Silverstein. Also on the program, Imam Zaid Shakir has been called a voice of conscience for American Muslims, but his views on Islam in America put him at the center of a heated debate about faith and culture.
