Faith-based literalists and reason-based pragmatists need a third place to stand. Let's consider a higher ground that asks each of them to stretch.
Despite the charged rhetoric to the contrary, there actually is work getting done in Washington. David Leonhardt, a senior writer at The New York Times magazine, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the players – often political polar opposites – who are working together to pass legislation, and what that signals for a movement he's calling “neo-populism.” His article is “A New Centrism Is Rising in Washington.”
For years, I've recognized that the way change happens in organizations is disconnected from the way that executives and senior leaders perceive change to happen. Top down initiatives often fail and employees resist the change, often because the change is done to them, not with them. They can't see themselves reprsented in the story of change. I've been following Jeppe Hansgaard on Linkedin because he's found a mathematical way to identify the 3% of staff who influence the other 90%. The key is informal networks. The change catalysts you need to engage are not the high performers or even the extroverts who dominate meetings. They are often the people no one would ever guess have influence because they have no formal power. They are not at the top of the hierarchy. Did you know if these informal leaders leave, the chance of turnover among the remaining staff rises by 500%? How can you retain these people and reward them for being the glue in the team if you don't even know who they are? Most leaders guess incorrectly when asked to name who owns the influence in the informal networks in their organizations. This mirrors my experience. Listen this episode to hear more stories of the 3 percent rule in context and also learn about the 6 change blockers. We talk about how understanding networks better can help us increase belonging and reduce loneliness and improve diversity. https://twitter.com/JeppeHansgaard LinkedIn Jeppe Vilstrup Hansgaard is the driving force behind Innovisor. "GRIDLOCKED: On Tour With The Briggs", a new rockumentary feature film on iconic punk band The Briggs, releases this February. From writer-director Kevin James Barry ("Among Them", "Serena and the RATTS"), the pic "GRIDLOCKED" follows the Los Angeles-based punk rock band through their ten day tour of the west coast with personal interviews with the band's frontman, Joey LaRocca. From Joey's engaging perspective, the film explores the sometimes harsh and other-times intensely rewarding lifestyle of musical artists. Joey must navigate a musical career that fell short of his youthful expectations as it collided with the realities of maturing and gaining family responsibilities. The story culminates, in what may be the final tour with the band that he loves, with the realization and acceptance that life doesn't always play out as planned.''GRIDLOCKED : On Tour With The Briggs'' releases On Demand February 15 from Gravitas Ventures.James Edward Webb was born in 1981 and grew up on ranches around the western United States. With his fathers employment as a cowboy, James developed a lifelong fascination with the Old West. The charm of the rugged sophistication in the lives of those who lived in the westward expansion, was driven further with several experiences. Aside from growing up on the ranches where his father found employment, he had a chance to explore some of the remnants of that history. When James was 19 he joined the Army. In 2001 he married his wife, Tera, 2003 was deployed to Iraq, and in 2007, after his separation from the military, they moved to Michigan where they have been raising their three children. He attended college and received a degree in art. He finds that writing is good therapy for his PTSD. In Tom's Revenge he uses his love for the Old West to bring a deeper understanding of this disorder by expressing what he, as a veteran, deals with internally and externally. Other therapies that he uses are art and cooking with his wife, creating and trying new foods. Down at parliament it looks like protesters have not taken up the offer to move their vehicles off Moleswoth and other nearby streets and into the Sky Stadium car park, but police say there's no need to forcibly remove vehicles yet. Protesters were able to move their cars from half past 6 last night. Gridlocked streets in the CBD are wearing thin for Wellingtonians, with about 100 cars blocking the roads surrounding parliament, causing disruption to businesses, schools and Victoria University. Wellington district commander Superintendent Corrie Parnell says the priority is to get the roads clear. He says communication lines between "key influencers" at the protest have been positive and he is optimistic many of the vehicle owners will move their cars on their own. Parnell says the stand-off is unprecedented but maintains the best result will come from working collaboratively. He says police have been in contact with towing companies and the defence force about forcibly moving some vehicles. But that this isn't in the works yet.

The last few weeks have been a total eye opener for me. I'm a clinician in the NHS. I have worked in NHS specialist eating disorder teams in the UK and I'm proud of what my teams have done to help families to understand, take charge and recover from this vile and dangerous illness. Even with the knowledge that we could do more with more resources, we still leave work at the end of the day feeling like we helped to make a change. We get praise and gratitude from the families that we help, we see lives that were stuck in fragmented chaos slowly return to normal and we use research and studies to make sure that we are providing the best treatment that exists for eating disorders. This all adds up to a very safe and satisfying feeling as a professional. But over the last few weeks I've come to learn that there are hundreds and hundreds of families that don't feel as happy and satisfied as I do about the provision of treatment in the UK. For some there is a distinct difficulty in accessing treatment. I have heard stories about lack of understanding about eating disorders in GPs, A&E departments, Paediatrics, child and adolescent mental health teams (CAMHS) and more surprisingly, in specialist CAMHS eating disorder teams. Some families have had to battle for their concerns for their child to be heard even in the face of very clear and obvious physical signs of ill health. This has left some families scared, anxious and confused about what to do or where to go for advice and support. So is this the experience of 'a few' families? Sadly, no.. this is the experience of hundreds of families in the UK. Many are turned away from services for reasons such as 'your child doesn't meet the criteria', 'your child needs to be motivated for treatment' , 'your child has another mental health condition that can't be treated by this team' , 'your child's Body Mass Index (BMI) or Weight for Height (WFH) is in the normal range'. These are just a few of the reasons stated by families - there are many more. More worrying, these families all share a common feeling - Their opinion and voice is not important and is often ignored. But the backbone if treatment in the UK is FAMILY BASED INTERVENTION.. How are we as teams missing this and leaving families feeling so isolated and dismissed? In this episode I talk to Jen Haken and Becki Copely, Both parents of children with an eating disorder, both have many years of experience of navigating their way through the UK health system and both have a detailed knowledge of the plight of families in the UK as a result of the two on line support groups they run. In today's discussion, we open the lid on the issues and difficulties associated with eating disorder treatment in the UK and have a very heartfelt and gritty discussion about the day to day struggles some families face. As I said, this was an eye opener for me, and I want to know more. If you're a professional you might find this a tough listen.. but let's use this to inform change.. Dr. Michael Cosimini discusses gamification and games for clinical education. Dr. Cosimini is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, and the author of Empiric, a card game for learning guidelines-based antibiotic selection. [02:08] Challenges of Creating Games for a Clinical Setting [02:56] Gamification Versus Serious Games [07:22] How to Balance Between Entertainment and Education [08:09] Tabletop Games Versus Video Games [12:23] How Medical Students Can Apply Games to Their Learning [13:49] How Empiric Works [20:21] How to Find Out More About Michael & Empiric Gamification Versus Serious Games Many medical instructors already gamify their educational content, for example, by transforming a PowerPoint slide into a game of Jeopardy, giving out stickers for accomplishments, and having a leaderboard in class. An example of gamification in the literature is when surgical residents performing laparoscopic procedures were split into competing groups. The randomly selected students who trained in this gamified setting trained longer and performed better. Dr. Cosimini does support gamification, but he more strongly promotes “serious games” which go beyond gamifying existing educational content, to creating a game for the purpose of education, rather than pure entertainment. For example, the game GridlockED, which resembles Clue, trains players to handle emergency room throughput. Michael’s card game, Empiric for learning antibiotic selection is also a serious game. How to Balance Entertainment and Education in Games To help find the appropriate balance between entertainment and education, Dr. Cosimini emphasizes the importance of testing the outcome of a game, to see what students have actually learnt. As a rule of thumb, be respectful of the player’s time. Do not have a game that is long, unless there is evidence that shows that this contributes to the learning process. Tabletop Games Versus Video Games Dr. Cosimini promotes tabletop games over digital or video games for medical education. He cites a study by Mary Flanagan of Tiltfactor, a game design company. The study compared the iPad and tabletop version of Pox: Save the People, a game about disease spread. With the tabletop version, people tended to interact and work together more, which is important for the social aspect of learning. How Medical Students Can Apply Games to Their Education Creating their own card games might be too involved, and too time-consuming for a medical student. Students can instead use off-the-shelf card games from resources such as East Midlands Emergency Medicine Educational Media, #EM3, which provides games for learning about pediatric EKGs, pediatric dermatology, and pediatric and adult orthopedics. For instructors, Michael recommends MedEd. He of course also recommends his own game Empiric, for learning about antibiotic selection, and his upcoming game about emergency medicine. These games are more helpful for clinical education i.e. for medical students on their clinical rotations, or for residents, and less helpful for first and second year medical students. How Empiric Works Empiric is based on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Red Book, 2018-2021. Dr. Cosimini includes visual cues — such as color coding — for facts such as the mechanism of delivery and the spectrum of activity, to enable students to memorize facts more quickly. It can be difficult to keep up with the changing facts around antibiotic resistance, and other antibiotic research. Currently, Dr. Cosimini does this by updating the printable card decks online, after the research is updated. Check out Empiric’s Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and website. The website includes a list of medical and non-medical card games. Sign up for a Free Coaching session with Chase DiMarco, sponsored by Prospective Doctor! Just when you thought it was safe to begin moving out of Lockdown 2.5, New Zealand's most populous city moves into Gridlock 1.0. I have mercifully been spared the horrors of trying to move around Auckland, which is congested at the best of times. With the Harbour Bridge out of action - at least, extremely limited in its function – travelling around the city is an absolute nightmare from the stories I've been hearing. An hour and ten to travel two kilometres in the inner city. I can't even begin to imagine what this is doing to the region's productivity coming hard on the heels of a lockdown - never has a reason for a Plan B Harbour crossing been more evident. The PM seems to suggest that is a one off - just one of those unfortunate accidents, but it's been obvious for some time that the region is vulnerable with just one harbour bridge. Back in 2013, in a speech to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at the Sky City Convention Centre, John Key said congestion on the Auckland Harbour Bridge was already a problem in the peak periods. Traffic forecasts indicated that, as the Auckland economy grew, this would increasingly spread throughout the working day."So a new harbour crossing is likely to be needed between 2025 and 2030. A new crossing will address the issues I have just mentioned and provide for the expected growth in Auckland's population and economy," Key said."The Government agrees with the Auckland Council that the next crossing should be a tunnel."And Chamber of Commerce ceo Michael Barnett says the accident - a freak gust of wind upturning a truck on Auckland Harbour Bridge damaging its centre strut to force lane closures for weeks on end – was a disaster waiting to happen and is another example of how we have no Plan B.More and more people just want to get out of a gridlocked city. I've heard anecdotally from real estate agents and friends with young family members that they have a gutsful. This is no life. Sitting in traffic is not how you want to spend most of your day, and people are moving out to the regions. If you are one of those caught up in the snarl because you have to be, if you have tried to come up with your own Plan B in the absence from successive governments and councils, how are you managing, and how many of you just up sticks and get out?
Since KIRO Radio put me on the medical beat when traffic came to a screeching halt, I’ve talked to several Coronavirus patients. Matt Perrault is one of them. Matt’s a 40-something sports talk radio host from Las Vegas who was training for an amateur boxing match with COVID19 came creeping into their home. In today’s episode of Gridlocked, Matt talks about his family’s battle against the virus.

Resa speaks with Medical Educators and Emergency Medicine Drs. Teresa Chan and Megan Stobart-Gallagher. What are Serious Games? How do those differ from using Game Mechanics in your medical education teaching? The literature supports that adults like to play and games are effective. They discuss Jane McGonigal, the power of games and highlight examples, such as Gridlocked, a game that could allow future doctors to learn systems approaches to patient management in a safe, low stakes environment., and Empiric, the antimicrobial card game designed for education for medical professionals.
Dr. Teresa Chan is an associate professor at McMaster University. Currently, she is the Assistant Dean, Program for Faculty Development in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster. She is also the Director of the RCPSC Clinician Educator Area of Focused Competency Diploma program, and the Competency Committee Co-Director for the RCPSC emergency medicine residency program. Additionally, she serves as the Social Media Lead for the McMaster Department of Medicine. Dr. Chan is also interested in developing medical education innovations (and evaluating them!). For instance, she has co-developed and is evaluating a serious game about emergency department flow called GridlockED (www.gridlockedgame.com)! In her free time, Dr. Chan enjoys writing music. You can follow her online as @TChanMD on Twitter, or check out her work at www.tchanmd.com.

The biggest racer of 2019 is finally here and, well, the boys have mixed feelings about it. There's little doubt that Codemasters' Grid reboot recaptures the flair of the original, but it's the lack of depth that is the subject of this unnaturally cynical installment of the irreverent racing game show you know and love. What do you think of the new Grid? We'd love to hear your thoughts over on Twitter @time_extend

From the podcast Outside/In: GRIDLOCKED - Something very different is going on up in Boothbay, Maine. It was an experiment which – if it works – could represent a fundamental shift in the way we think about using electricity.

We're gonna give it to you straight. This story is Sam's white whale. For years, the electrical grid has called to him like a siren, and lead him down a treacherous path of unintelligible tech jargon, mind-numbing energy reports, unfinished radio stories, and lots of mixed metaphors. But out of the ashes, the story of Boothbay, Maine rose like a Phoenix...or perhaps it was cobbled into existence, like Frankenstein. Either way, this is a story about the electrical grid, and it's darned interesting. Sam has slayed the beast.
