Welcome to episode #895 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #895. When it comes to the digital economy, the law and the media, everyone should be following Dr. Michael Geist. Now, more than ever, his voice may be the only "truth" we are seeing in the media as Canada deals with the massive fallout that is Bill C-18 (Canada's Online News Act). My primer on this ridiculous law is here: Big Tech, Big Media, Big Trouble And Big Lies. With that, the issues (and opportunity) bleed well beyond the borders of Canada and should strike fear into anyone interested in our global digital economy. For a long while, Michael has been reshaping the landscape of Internet and E-commerce Law from his academic pulpit at the University of Ottawa. With credentials that read like an academic's dream — degrees from Osgoode Hall, Cambridge, and Columbia — he's not just dissecting law... he's writing it, in real-time, for a digital age. You've likely stumbled upon his incisive columns, where he distills complex technology law issues into digestible wisdom. But wait, there's more. Michael is the maestro behind a slew of copyright books that are nothing short of revolutionary. Titles like, The Copyright Pentalogy, and, In the Public Interest, are shaking the foundations of Canadian copyright law, carving out a new roadmap for the digital era. He's not just penning books... he's also editing monthly technology law publications and running a blog that's become a go-to resource on Internet and intellectual property issues. Michael's reach isn't confined to academia or print... he's a boardroom staple too. Whether it's Ingenium, Internet Archive Canada, or the Electronic Frontier Foundation, his advisory skills are in high demand. He's even steering the digital strategy for Waterfront Toronto, leading it into uncharted technological waters. His influence is such that he was named among the 50 most impactful people on intellectual property globally and among the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada, multiple years running. Why does Michael matter? Because in a world wrestling with the ethics and laws of a digital frontier, he's the sage we didn't know we needed, but can't afford to ignore. We dig deep into the media landscape, the mis-step of the government, why Meta proactively decided to no longer allow users to post links out to news websites, and why everyone (no matter where you live) should be paying attention to what Meta, Google and others technology companies are doing. Science, technology, engineering and math make up the four letters in "STEM", which is the subject of a new exhibit at the Guelph Civic Museum. In "Iron Willed: Women in STEM", you can travel through the history of science and engage with all the great women that have achieved big wins in science while overcoming tremendous social and societal barriers thrown in front of them, even in the 21st century. From Marie Curie to Donna Strickland, the history of women in science has not just been a story about the advancement of scientific understanding and knowledge, but a story about social progress. Old-fashioned ideas about the role women can play in science can be seen in modern statistics, where only about 20 per cent of people receiving physics degrees are women, the lowest of all the physical sciences.  Now, we can all understand the struggle with the "Iron Willed" exhibit, which originated from Ingenium, a group of Ottawa museums, and was then adapted for Guelph with information about local scientists by Laura Coady, who is the Collections and Research Co-ordinator of Guelph Museums. Coady joins us this week, and so does University of Guelph physics prof Dr. Joanne O'Meara  and U of G microbial ecologist Dr. Heather Slinn. With all this brain power on this week's edition of the podcast, we will talk about the highlights of the exhibit, how it was made Guelph-friendly, and some of the interesting things you will find when you visit. We will also talk about the difficulties in getting more women into scientific fields, why the struggle starts long before the first year of university, and we will discuss the best ways to support women in STEM with some personal messages from the guests to their younger selves. So let's dig into the world of Women in STEM, and the challenges they face, on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about "Iron Willed: Women in STEM" at the Guelph Museums website, and you can also visit the exhibit in-person at the Guelph Civic Museum any time from now until February 20. You can learn more about Royal City Science and their efforts to build a science centre in Guelph at their website, and you can follow 500 Women Scientists Guelph on Twitter. Relentless Health Value

If you want to hear what my mom and dad, both Medicare Advantage patients in their late 70s, have to say about telehealth (or teleconferencing, as my dad puts it), you’ll have to listen to the episode. They are not and have never been health care professionals, but they fully get that the question “What’s better—telehealth or in-person care?” asked like it’s some kind of winner-takes-all cage fight doesn’t serve anybody’s needs. And by anybody, I mean clinicians or the patient. And by patient, I mean even Medicare Advantage patients in their late 70s. In this health care podcast, I’m speaking with Christian Milaster from Ingenium. Christian worked at Mayo for 12 years before starting his consulting firm specializing in many aspects of telehealth. He has a great newsletter, by the way. I’ve appreciated subscribing to it. It’s called Telehealth Tuesday. I would recommend it.   Christian says telehealth is a clinical tool. That’s why there’s no answer to the question of whether in-person is better than virtual. It’s like asking, “What’s better—an x-ray, a CT scan, or an MRI?” Or like, “What’s better—a daily blood pressure test at home or one super fancy EKG a year?” I guess telehealth could also be considered maybe a setting of care. Christian probably wouldn’t agree with me. Either way, few people sit around pitting Exam Room 6 against the one on the fourth floor with the extra-wide doorway. So, let’s not even talk about this. We’re over it. The relevant question to be asking about telehealth would be “What’s the best clinical workflow, patient journey, clinical pathway for X kind of patient or for this patient?” The tools that we choose to use or the care setting we choose should be a function of the best care plan for the patient. You figure out the care plan first. It’s just like you figure out what surgery someone needs, and then you stock the OR. It would be super weird to do it the other way around. You know, neurosurgeon walks into OR. “Hey, what’s this knee replacement doing here?” You get my drift. What’s the why, you might be asking, if I’m a provider and I’m kinda like the urologist that my father fired the other day? And I’m thinking I’m just going to require all of my patients to come into my office all the time because that’s the way I’ve always done it and I kinda like it. Well, let me refer you to the article written by Jane Sarasohn-Kahn the other day entitled “Virtual Health Tech Enables the Continuum of Health From Hospital to Home.” This article is great and talks about a bunch of things, but here’s a quote I particularly liked: “[The demand for telehealth] will impact every segment of care delivery and sponsor, including small to mid-sized physician practices, employers, behavioral/mental health, public/government-sponsored health [plans], and the pharma and life science industry.” She is talking about demand post-pandemic, by the way.   Let me put a finer point on this. You know who is most likely, besides my father, to fire a doctor who doesn’t know how to incorporate telehealth into his or her treatment pathway? Yes, exactly—educated working-aged people. People with commercial insurance. The people that health systems and doctors are always trying to attract because … favorable payer mix. So, there’s that. One more thing before I turn the floor over to the interview with Christian Milaster: I just wanted to call out something that matters, especially right now. I recently saw a post by Joe Kvedar on LinkedIn about how digital inclusion is actually a social determinant of health. The post referenced an article by Jill Castek and Cynthia Sieck, amongst others.   The point of it was that sometimes people have spoken about telehealth being the solution to rural health issues (eg, access issues) or people who have to work three jobs or those who have transportation issues. The problem is that it’s exactly these people who may not have internet access or maybe have less digital literacy. So, exactly the people that, at least originally, telehealth was supposed to serve are exactly the people that are having trouble taking advantage of it. You can learn more at ingeniumdigitalhealth.com and connect with Christian on LinkedIn.  Christian Milaster optimizes telehealth services for health systems and physician practices. He serves as a digital health and telehealth advisor to start-ups and established digital health companies. Christian is a master builder of digital health and telehealth programs and is the founder and president of Ingenium Digital Health Advisors, a boutique consultancy focused on enabling the effective delivery of extraordinary care through workflow optimization and the judicious use of technology. Born, raised, and educated as an engineer in Germany, Christian started his career at IBM Global Services before joining the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he worked for 12 years in various roles before launching Ingenium in 2012. 06:53 What’s the biggest mistake provider organizations are making in regard to telehealth right now 08:50 Is there a downside to not investing more in telehealth? 12:28 “There’s no more geographic boundaries.” 15:25 What’s a provider organization’s first step in making telehealth a cornerstone of care? 17:20 Why is organizational change management essential to incorporating telehealth? 19:00 “Everybody involved in the in-person care experience needs to be involved and play a role in the virtual care experience as well.” 19:22 What does the patient flow look like for organizations that do telehealth well? 21:12 How does an organization use telehealth as a strategic tool? 23:55 “Telehealth gives us an opportunity to redesign the workflow of the care delivery experience.” 24:38 How is the provider reimbursed in telehealth? 26:29 “It’s really about the outcomes and it’s about value-based care … when I can just wield telemedicine … as a clinical tool.” 28:19 “Telemedicine … is vital for value-based care; it’s vital for better patient outcomes.” You can learn more at ingeniumdigitalhealth.com and connect with Christian on LinkedIn.  @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine What’s the biggest mistake #providerorganizations are making in regard to telehealth right now? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine Is there a downside to not investing more in telehealth? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine “There’s no more geographic boundaries.” @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine What’s a #providerorganization’s first step in making telehealth a cornerstone of care? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine Why is organizational change management essential to incorporating telehealth? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine “Everybody involved in the in-person care experience needs to be involved and play a role in the virtual care experience as well.” @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine What does the patient flow look like for organizations that do telehealth well? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine How does an organization use telehealth as a strategic tool? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine “Telehealth gives us an opportunity to redesign the workflow of the care delivery experience.” @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine How is the provider reimbursed in telehealth? @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine “Telemedicine … is vital for value-based care; it’s vital for better patient outcomes.” @HealthChrism discusses #telehealth on our #healthcarepodcast. #healthcare #podcast #digitalhealth #healthtech #telemedicine

The only missing piece of the puzzle for Volkswagen is probably the software for the ID.3, but as the company multiple times reiterated the Summer launch date, we assume they are sure it will be ready by then."   They will start with 30-50 cars a day.   VW says: "Vehicles built will be equipped with whatever version of the software suite is current at the corresponding time of their production and prior to their delivery to customers in summer will receive the latest version. Subsequent to the market launch the digital functions will then continue to be updated in regular increments in the following months"   Jurgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Sales, Marketing & After Sales put a video out on Twitter [audio]   https://insideevs.com/news/412880/vw-id3-production-back-online-tomorrow/   CHINESE EV START-UP BYTON FURLOUGHS STAFF "Electric vehicle start-up Byton has put hundreds of its team in the US on furlough, following lay-offs in China last year and planned pay cuts, as disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic threaten to derail the commercial release of its first car." says South China MOrning Post: "Byton initiated the series of cost-reduction measures this week amid efforts to put on track its main operations in Nanjing, capital of eastern coastal Jiangsu province, where production of the M-Byte electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) is based. More than 200 workers are affected by the temporary work stoppage at Byton’s North American headquarters in Santa Clara, California – a research and development base focused on software design, with about 450 staff. The M-Byte was expected to initially release in mainland China, the world’s biggest car market, later this year. That would be followed by the car’s commercial launch in the US and Europe by the second half of 2021."   https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3081262/chinese-ev-start-byton-furloughs-staff-cuts-pay-pandemic-casts-doubt   2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN 4S FIRST DRIVE - FORGET 203 MILES. AUTOBLOG EASILY GOT 300 From Dan at Autoblog who has his regular test route: "The 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S covered 213.5 miles this time, and it finished the day with 87 miles left over. Those figures add up to an astounding projected range of 300.5 miles — a full 48% and a whopping 97.5 miles better than its rating. This doesn’t just back up my prior result, it underlines it and makes it bold. The Taycan, be it the Turbo or now 4S, can grossly exceed its EPA ratings while driving in a normal manner." Autoblog writes: "This result in the Taycan 4S is possible because all early-build cars are being made with the larger 93.4-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery option that is the standard offering on Turbo models. These early 4S cars also come with a glass roof and an intelligent home charge cord, bringing the starting price up to $114,340 with destination included. The true base 4S and its 79.2-kWh battery won’t be built for some time, so we won’t know its official range (172-175, I’m guessing) until later. But we do know it’ll have a normal steel roof and will start at $105,150."   The charge port flat is a good old push/release door like most cars or even fossil cars. No fancy swipe with your finger.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/22/2020-porsche-taycan-4s-first-drive/   TESLA DROPS A BUNCH OF NEW AUTOPILOT DATA, 3 BILLION MILES AND MORE "Tesla’s head of AI, Andrej Karpathy, released a bunch of new data about Autopilot and its features in a new presentation." reports electrek: "In November 2018, after 4 years of Autopilot, Tesla owners reached the first billion miles driven with Autopilot activated. Now less than two years later, Tesla’s fleet has now added 2 billion more miles for a total of 3 billion miles on Autopilot. The new information was released by Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s head of AI and computer vision, in a new presentation at the Scaled Machine Learning Conference. It was held at the end of February, but a video of the presentation was just released. Out of the 3 billion miles on Autopilot, 1 billion were driven using Navigate on Autopilot, which is able to pass slower cars and take off-ramp exits by changing lanes."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/22/tesla-autopilot-data-3-billion-miles/   RANGE ROVER EVOQUE AND LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT PLUG-IN HYBRIDS REVEALED "Land Rover has revealed a new plug-in hybrid powertrain that will be found in both the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport. Both of these models have been completely redesigned in the last 24 months, but had so far only been available with a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel Ingenium engines." writes evo.co.uk: "The new powertrain is made up from a new 197bhp turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 108bhp electric motor that’s mounted on the rear axle.  the new plug-in the most powerful version of both on sale. It’s also the fastest of each, reaching 62mph in 6.4sec (0.2sec faster than the Evoque P300). Unlike Land Rover’s traditional mechanically linked all-wheel-drive system found in most variants, power in these P300e models is sent from each of the power units to their relevant axles only, with no mechanical connection between the axles."   15kWh battery, 41 miles on electric, 84 mph.   https://www.evo.co.uk/land-rover/202497/range-rover-evoque-and-land-rover-discovery-sport-plug-in-hybrids-revealed   ELECTRIC AWARDS ISSUE OF TOP GER MAG " in this month’s issue of TG magazine we’re celebrating the very best electrified cars the world has to offer. Take the Koenigsegg Gemera, with its 600bhp three-cylinder, twin-turbo engine supported by three electric motors that produce a further 1,100bhp – now that’s our kind of hybrid. Back in 2017, the manufacturer announced the FCV’s arrival with great aplomb, first vehicles were handed over to certain customers in October 2019 and it officially became available for order in the spring of 2019." says InsideEVs: "Some examples were sold to Germany’s National Organization Hydrogen (NOW) and H2 Mobility, as well as several regional ministries and the German railway service, Deutsche Bahn. The goal was for it to be leased to people living in cities where hydrogen fueling station infrastructure was more developed"   https://insideevs.com/news/412248/mercedes-glc-f-cell-production-stop/   SEOUL IS SUBSIDIZING 700 ELECTRIC TAXIS "South Korea’s capital, Seoul, is purchasing 700 electric taxis. This subsidy is worth 18.2 million won (around $15,000) per EV, far more than the 12.7 million ($10,300) subsidy for buying an EV for personal use. Seoul is making foreign manufacturers, not only Korean brands, eligible for funding." according to Clean Technica: "Taxi companies in Seoul will be able to choose from 19 different models from 7 manufacturers. These include the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, Jaguar I-PACE, and Nissan Leaf. The city notes that the high mileage of 440 kilometers daily for taxis if electrified will significantly improve air quality."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/22/seoul-is-subsidizing-700-electric-taxis/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Do you prefer to buy new or used EV?

In his latest podcast, David reflects on 31 years of learning and applying the Deming philosophy to enrich society, with a focus on advancing education systems.   Beginning with his first conversation with Dr. Deming in 1986, when he personally answered David's phone call from Sitka, Alaska, he has been on a personal learning journey, including mentored from Dr. Deming.   With encouragement from Dr. Deming, David reached out to Myron Tribus, who traveled to Sitka to learn more about David's efforts to bring Dr. Deming's theory of management to his high school education system.   Soon thereafter, David and Myron were speaking together at conferences about their efforts to improve education systems, using a Deming lens. Fast forward to 2016, when David was selected to serve as president of Ingenium Schools and shift from “living vicariously as a consultant” (with Langford Learning) to “get back to the laboratory” of an education system in a full-time capacity.  In this month's podcast, David goes down memory lane with Tripp to explore topics such as:  His first phone call with Dr. Deming Collaborating with his mentor, Myron Tribus A 25+ year career as a consultant with Langford Learning An offer from founder and previous president, Glenn Noreen, to join Ingenium Schools Daily Innovation at Ingenium Schools, with 160+ employees Have the fundamentals in education changed?
