This month, our host, Dan van der Kooy, records the 50th episode of Catching Up in Kingston, Jamaica, sitting on a fishing boat with Jerome "Cliff" Clifford and Colin "Dean" Palmer. Cliff and Dean are two local fishermen from Seaview Gardens, a neighborhood along Sandy Gully in Kingston, Jamaica. Their neighborhood is directly affected by the trash pouring out of the gully each day. Cliff and Dean share stories of what it was like prior to the pollution and discuss the importance of cleaning it up. They share their pride in being part of a major project like the new Interceptor solution and their desire to leave a better future for the local community, fishermen, and future generations. We also hear about the community's involvement in The Ocean Cleanup's deployments in the area. Their goal is to preserve the environment, ensuring that future generations have somewhere to go fishing, something to eat, and a strong community. Right now, they're making history to make sure there's a future. Kingston, Jamaica, is our first Interceptor city. Learn more about it here: https://theoceancleanup.com/updates/kingston-jamaica-the-first-interceptor-city/ Thank you to all our listeners! This month's podcast is from the remote and windy shore of the Rio Motagua. Robert Leijgraaf, aka Bobby, Project Engineer at The Ocean Cleanup, sits with our host, Dan van der Kooy, in the fishing village of El Quetzalito, Guatemala. We're about to deploy the second Interceptor Solution in Guatemala. Bobby talks about the need for another Interceptor Barricade at the end of the Rio Motagua and what we learned from the first project in the country. Interceptor Barricade XL will be about 300km upstream from the first Interceptor Barricade. If it all goes well, the combined impact of the two deployments will stop river pollution right before it enters the Caribbean Sea. Learn more about our new deployment here.
Welcome to the first Tales of the Magic Skagit podcast from the 2024 Skagit County Fair. Don Wick and I co-host the Meyer Sign Fair History Booth, and for our third year running we look for opportunities to sit down with folks at the Fair with good stories to tell. On Friday, August 9 (Day Two of the Fair), we start off with an interview with three members of an Anacortes-based West African drum ensemble led by certified Ghanian Master Drummer and flutist, Saeed Abbas. Joining Don and I for this interview is our Skagit Valley Youth History Project intern, Morgan White — herself a percussionist with Mount Vernon High School. Our second interview is with Jason Miller, the owner and publisher of a great upper Skagit newspaper, the Concrete Herald. We'll learn a bit about Jason's story and how the town of Concrete is doing. Our third interview is with Maddy Van der Kooy and Deb Eiderness, who are both involved in programs that provide resources and outreach to farmers dealing with stress — a more serious problem than you might think unless you're trying to make a living in farming in the 21st century. Our fourth interview is with the amazing cowboy comedian and trick roper Leapin' Louie, who is a new and fantastic addition to the Fair's entertainment lineup. You'll discover that his passion extends way beyond a humorous cowboy schtick. Don and I wind up the day with an interview with Skagit County Commisioner Ron Wesen who shares his own history and love for our annual Fair. We'll be back tomorrow with more interviews for Day Three. Keep it magic, y'all!
It's ‘Bring Your Kids To Work Day' at The Ocean Cleanup HQ! Your host, Dan van der Kooy, has traveled the world braving all kinds of hazardous environments to bring you the stories of our mission. But is he ready for his toughest test yet? We're not just ridding the oceans of plastic for today: we're doing it for the next generation, too - and they have some thoughts! Here, children of crew members tell Dan how proud they are of their parent's work at The Ocean Cleanup, why it's so essential to protect fish and other animals in the oceans, and how they want to help other kids all over the world: as Milly puts it, ‘we should all help and make this a better place.' Rae Town, Kingston, Jamaica: an iconic location and the perfect place to catch up on The Ocean Cleanup's Jamaica project. With five Interceptors deployed in gullies around the city (and more on the way) one guest wasn't enough: Dan van der Kooy speaks to Alecia Beaufort, Operations Manager for Clean Harbours Jamaica, and Dominik Haertl, Business Development Manager at The Ocean Cleanup, about how this enormous project got started and how we've responded to Kingston's unique circumstances. Alecia and Dominik speak about how local people - from fishing communities to visiting schoolchildren - are benefiting and learning from our Interceptor deployments, and how our collaboration with local government and vital partners such as the GraceKennedyFoundation and Clean Harbours Jamaica isn't just about intercepting plastic, but also about a wider project to improve quality of life for Kingston's community.
"Science has always been my passion.” Sarah-Jeanne Royer, our resident oceanographer and research scientist on plastic degradation, has a storied background. In this episode, she takes us from her childhood in Quebec to catching a wave and peaceful island life in Hawaii… with a stop along the way to study for her degree while in a bunker in war-torn Afghanistan. Sarah tells a slightly worse-for-wear Dan van der Kooy how plastic marine debris on Hawaiian beaches is similar to trash found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, along with the importance of staying focused (and very, very patient) when conducting research. She also ponders whether or not it's worth spending time and energy to handle emotion-led criticism (“it makes me sad”) and tells us why we're all “shedding plastic” when we work out.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.22.529281v1?rss=1 Authors: Merritt, D. M., Udachina, A., Freidel, N., Almeida, S. M. T., Lau, Y. M. A., van der Kooy, D. Abstract: Memories are often categorized into types, reflecting their behavioural, anatomical and molecular diversity: these classifications both aid understanding of the differences among varieties of memory and help delineate the unifying cross-species principles underlying them. In the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, we find that an associative memory of the pairing of the normally attractive odorant benzaldehyde and starvation depends on de novo transcription and translation, is independent of CREB, and is produced by massed training: a pattern which does not correspond to any of the well-characterized molecular categories of invertebrate memory. Further, as has been shown for many memories in vertebrates, but not previously in nematodes, we find that formation of this memory continues after removal of the stimuli initially causing it, and that it is labile to disruption through protein synthesis inhibition following training, but that inhibition of proteasomal activity does not extend the duration of the memory. Previous findings have implicated insulin pathway signalling as a key component of this benzaldehyde/starvation memory, however we find that the transcriptional activity required for the memory is likely to be independent of the transcription factors that function at the terminus of this pathway. These findings better characterize this model associative memory in relation to other invertebrate memory types and identify ways in which it both shares their traits and differs from them. Zadecydowały detale i większa wszechstronność Zawiercia. Król Semeniuk, scenarzysta Janusz, a u srebrnego medalisty rozczarowujący Fornal i Toniutti. (00:48:55) Zaczynamy rozmowę o finale Zaksa - Itas Trentino. Odstają ustawienia z Podrascaninem i Lavią. (01:55:47) Kto faworytem finału?
In this short "in-between" episode, Shawn shares a few stories from former Outward Bound and NOLS Instructor and, most recently, stroke survivor Geoff Kooy, who had emailed to the show.

Jason and Alex are joined this week by Helpful Hats Project founder, Shana Vander Kooy. Growing up in a rural farm community, Shana always knew she was destined for bigger and brighter things. She traded in the small town for New York City when she received a scholarship to play collegiate softball. She reminisces on how it was the experience of a lifetime, however, it was also where she was exposed to drugs, alcohol, partying, and the big city lifestyle. Shana eventually found her way to the West Coast where the partying lifestyle continued. It wasn't until Shana and her wife were seeking to have children that she realized she needed professional help. She then admitted herself into detox because she knew she would not be able to be there for her kids in the condition she was in. Shana, Jason, and Alex continue to discuss how truly special and supportive the recovery community can be, as even though all of us are very different people, so many of us have very similar stories and that no one is alone when it comes to sobriety. Fast forward to the present day, Shana talks about how she wanted to do something for the recovery community to give back, as it is what saved her life. In this quest, she recalls how overwhelming it was for her as she began her sobriety journey in that she did not know where to go or who to reach out to for help. She then formed the Helpful Hats Project, a project hoping to provide struggling individuals an opportunity to approach someone wearing a Helpful Hat for help and guidance. Now, over five years sober, Shana talks about how her wife and two adopted sons are her life and driving force and how all of that wouldn't have manifested if it wasn't for her getting the help she knew she needed. For this month's podcast I spoke with my friend and fellow Union Member, Dan Vander Kooy, operator of Iron Buffalo, a game store with a coffee problem! While we didn't talk too much about minis this month, we did get into the nitty gritty of what it's like to run a game shop. These pillars of our community are notoriously fickle creatures and Dan was kind enough to share his thoughts on their care and maintenance. We talked about the importance of game stores to the community and what we as community members can do to make them the kind of places we want to be. We also got into what it's been like to weather a global pandemic as a retailer and events space! Finally, we maybe got a little distracted talking about the very cool dice available from the Cozy Gamer... Be sure to check out Iron Buffalo everywhere on the web, and definitely swing by (when you're fully vaccinated) while you're in the Amherst, NY area! As usual, this episode will be exclusive to BWU members for a few days before being released to the general public. Union Strong!

Ever since 1996, Skagit farmers have been left in limbo about access to water needed for farming. Water has become a political tool. We couldn’t have chosen a better scientist to wrap up this month’s theme of “Foundational Science” than Dr. Derek van der Kooy, Head of the Neurobiology Research Group at the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. His team conducts basic science research in developmental and stem cell biology, as well as in understanding the neurobiology of motivation and uncovering learning and memory genes. We sit down with Dr. van der Kooy to discuss his own graduate school experience, his lab’s groundbreaking discovery of the presence of stem cells in the adult mammalian eye, and the perks and challenges of overseeing such a diverse range of research projects. In our popular Ask a Student segment, Kat and Eryn chat with one of Dr. van der Kooy’s PhD students, Samantha Yammine, about her research on neural stem cells, why it is vital for basic scientists to make their work accessible to the general public, and her amazing strides in promoting science communication through social media (check her out on Instagram & Facebook: @science.sam). We also travel back in time to meet “the father of modern neuroscience,” Santiago Ramon y Cajal, in our Flashback Friday segment. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we do.
