For the 35th anniversary of Slint's landmark second album, Spiderland, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Brian McMahan and Britt Walford first connected over a shared love of punk rock, growing up in Louisville, Kentucky in the early 1980s. They began forming bands when they were young teenagers, including Languid and Flaccid and Squirrel Bait. Another band, Maurice, was formed around this time and they began working with guitarist David Pajo. When Maurice ended, Walford and Pajo continued playing together and brought in bassist Ethan Buckler. After they performed at a unitarian church service where McMahan was in attendance, he joined the band soon after and they became Slint. They had befriended Steve Albini from playing shows with his band Big Black so they asked him to record their debut album. Tweez was self-released by their friend Jennifer Hartman in 1989. Buckler was unhappy with the sound of the record and decided to quit the band so Todd Brashear took over on bass. They recorded a single with Albini that caught the attention of Touch and Go Records, who signed them to a deal for their second album. After spending a summer working on new material, they recorded at a commercial studio in Chicago with producer Brian Paulson. Spiderland was eventually released in 1991. In this episode, Brian McMahan, Britt Walford, David Pajo and Todd Brashear describe the underground music scene in Louisville that first drew them together. Walford discusses the hours they would spend in his parents' basement, woodshedding songs and coming up with arrangements. As each song would start as an instrumental, he describes how the vocals would be an afterthought that the band usually wouldn't hear until they were in the studio. McMahan describes his reluctance to be the singer of the band as he preferred to work in isolation on a 4-track and come up with mostly spoken word sections to fit the music. Pajo talks about his paired down approach to guitar and how he developed a clean sound that was a reaction against the heavily distorted guitars of the punk and hardcore scene at the time. Brashear talks about being an early fan of the band, jumping at the opportunity to be their new bass player even though bass wasn't his primary instrument. The many hours they spent in the practice space working up the songs allowed them to track the record in a single weekend. Even though the band ended up breaking up before the album was released, Spiderland went on to become a touchstone of the underground music scene, reaching far beyond their Louisville community. From counting out odd time signatures, to a surprising emphasis on dynamics, to embracing vulnerability in punk, to the coming of age themes that made the record so relatable, to the liquid courage that was required for the cathartic “Good Morning Captain” vocals, to battling anxiety and depression during a difficult stage of life, to the enduring friendships they've been able to maintain over the years, to the power of the practice space, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.

This week's episode includes rain recorded from the center of a lean-to with some added drift. A lean-to is structure some folks park cars under, or picnic tables. Basically it protects people and things from airborne elements (not asteroids).Does anyone remember the aughts? Fat Joe had a really popular song that I assumed was about the Rockaway Peninsula, but maybe not. I always assumed it was a Fat Joe beach-adventure thing where he leans back in his car, lowers the boom on the sound system, and strokes his chin like he's assessing upcoming chess moves as he weaves through traffic on the BQE. (Directed by Hype Williams)So, one New Year's Eve in Burlington, VT I got completely wasted at Rasputin's, and in the car ride back to our spot I shouted at pedestrians, “DO THE ROCKAWAY!” And more than one yelled back, “**** you!” And I was like, “Yo, you say that **** to Fat Joe's face!”Bluh, I'm struggling here folks... At least hints of warmer weather are in the air — actually strike that, I don't know why I need to attempt some poetic horse****. "Hints...” I should just—guys, there was a warm day last week with rain and I recorded some of it. And I added some drift because it feels nice to have a hobby.Spring! Tune out, ignore the commercial news, and for heaven's sake do the Rockaway. Also subscribe (and share)! We have a historical major league baseball episode opening day!

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 11, 2025 is: languid LANG-gwid adjective Something described as languid shows or has very little energy, force, or activity. // We paddled at a languid pace, in no hurry to arrive at our picnic destination. See the entry > Examples: “The flat once belonged to 19th-century French writer George Sand, and is now a handsome apartment with sleek decor and elevated amenities that will make it easy to enjoy languid afternoons sipping on a glass of wine and perusing the owner's extensive literary collection.” — Elise Taylor, Nicole Kliest, and Elly Leavitt, Vogue, 8 Aug. 2025 Did you know? Lack, lack, lack. Languid is all about lack. Depending on its context, the word can suggest a lack of strength or force, a lack of energy, or a lack of activity. The lack-of-strength/force sense of languid describes the kind of sluggishness that often results from fatigue or weakness, as in “the illness left her feeling languid.” The lack-of-energy sense is synonymous with listless, and often describes someone's character or disposition as a result of dissatisfaction or sadness. Lastly, there's the lack-of-activity sense of languid, as in “investors are worried about the languid stock market.” So languid is a total bummer, right? Not so (ahem) fast! Sometimes it's a good thing to dillydally, and languid has also long been used to describe stretches of time—think afternoons, days, summers, etc.—that are relatively and perhaps pleasantly chill.

Sparse. Laconic. Expansive. Languid. Wry. The Coen Brother's 2007 Neo-Noir Western 'No Country For Old Men' moves to the fatefully ticking beat of it's own Grandfather Clock. It's a film that rewards close viewing and is astoundingly faithful to Cormac McCarthy's novel while also being so completely a "Coen Brothers film" even as it's their (only?) adaptation of an existing book. Featuring an iconic performance by Javier Bardem as the philosophical killer Anton Chigur, brilliant cinematography from frequent Coen collaborator Roger Deakins, and perfectly wrought twangily-Texas turns by Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones. A number of signature Coens scenes of the lead characters interacting with a variety of shop clerks, receptionists, store owners, and authority figures abound.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 3, 2022 is: languid LANG-gwid adjective Languid means “showing or having very little strength, energy, or activity.” It is generally used in formal and literary contexts. // The trial proceeded at a languid pace as each attorney called up a whole roster of witnesses to testify. See the entry > Examples: “Wölffer's rosés—the company now has eight varieties—have become a fixture at backyard parties and beach picnics, a symbol of languid days on Long Island's South Fork.” — Alex Williams, The New York Times, 27 June 2022 Did you know? “Beauty is only the start of bearable terror”. These lines are uttered, by Jean-Luc Godard himself, in 1983’s Prenom Carmen. Wild of hair, cigar to his lips. A Delphic oracle treading a tightrope between madness and cinema. In the years between 1983 and 1993, Godard turned his camera away from the screeching confections of his revolutionary period, and began to ask bigger and more transcendent questions. Like God. Like the relationship of man and woman. Like love (be it blue-balled or consummated). Languid, soft, graceful. On the surface, these films - Prénom Carmen (1983), Hail Mary/Je vous salue, Marie (1985), and Hélas pour Moi (1993) - look more like film-films; proper ‘arthouse’ stuff. And people have a tendency to disregard them because of this. Hitting middle age, what was Godard really aiming at? And does this period of his prolific filmmaking career still carry the banner of his earliest and most well remembered films? Naturally, Owen and Ralph take up the task of finding out.
Well, that was something. The lads begrudgingly sat down and discussed what went wrong on Sarurday and then some. Discussions on team selection, application and individual worries in the squad.

We discuss our serious love of hot water and steam baths, leading to the age-old question if our important conversations shouldn’t all take place in steam baths??? Languid conversations in hot water/political discourse through misting vapors … isn't there a tradition of having open and honest conversations wrapped in a towel or naked???? could this be the next big thing to get people to come together??? Lots of big changes charged by the Pluto in Capricorn effect. Pluto goes retrograde on April 26th and will lead to changes that will have huge consequences, long term. Great changes happen slowly at times. Moon going into Gemini on the 26th along with Venus being in Gemini can be light-hearted but may induce lying out because of defensive modes. Nothing diabolical but can still be damaging. Avoid lying as we're only doing it out of insecurity. Science continues full speed ahead.
Today's guest is Britt Walford, perhaps best known as the drummer for Slint, a band he co-founded in Louisville in 1986. During its brief lifespan, Slint operated in relative obscurity; but the band's music has proven to be a massive influence on subsequent generations--and previous generations alike. Even established legends such as Robert Plant have professed their affinity for the band. Britt's incredibly unique, angular style won him many fans among the musical cognoscenti, and--aside from his work from Slint, he has worked with artists such as The Breeders (on their first album, Pod), The For Carnation, and Will Oldham. Britt joined Joe from his home in Louisville. During the age of social distancing, we're recording by phone and releasing new episodes every day.

Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases and to get free downloads http://soundcloud.com/monologues The Scottish-born, Copenhagen-based purveyor of fine grooves and one half of 6thboroughproject serves up an hour of his most supremely chuggy slo-mo disco flavours for us. Languid grooves for sticky nights. *How would you describe your sound?* Eclectic I guess. I'm a lover of music in general so I gravitate towards anything with emotion that moves me. That's the framework really - and my production and sound flexes around that regardless genre. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Many things are the seeds of inspiration for me, not just music. It can be films, experiences, feelings ... they are as important as musical influences which stretch across the genres. I love great sounding records from bands like Steely Dan or Earth, Wind & Fire ... but equally love dirty sounding records from people like Moodymann or Gangstarr. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* I planned to do something across the bpm spectrum but didn't quite realise how much stuff I had done! So I stuck to a slow, chuggy groove featuring some older tracks I'd been involved in over the years. I've always loved that sort of tempo for starting a night off, and although I play a lot of house sets these days I always relish playing this sort of groove if I get to kick the party off. I've been planning on doing a follow up to Guitarisimo, a mix from April of 2017. When several albums from 2018 fit the sound I knew I had to do the mix now. The album that got me started is "Con Todo El Mundo" by Khruangbin. It's one of my favorite records this year. Entirely guitar-based it's sound include surf music, Latin, Thai & Indian music. I highly recommend it. https://khruangbin.bandcamp.com/album/con-todo-el-mundo-n-s-america-edition Most of this mix sounds like it grew from that album with a few ambient sidetracks. This is a nice follow up to the Warming Trend mix post a couple of weeks ago because this music sounds like it should be listened to in hot weather. Grab an El Diablo or a Chalino Special and enjoy. "“Languid in Rose” by Frances Silversmith (Originally published in Fantasy for Good.) Lilia I, Queen of Roses, reluctantly opened her eyes to yet another perfect day, courtesy of the Enchantment. The briar rose outside her windows threw moving shadows on the salmon-colored material curtains of her four-poster bed. What a disgustingly lovely sight. Lilia forced her heavy limbs to a sitting position. Instantly, her maid appeared with a cup of hot chocolate -- as she did every morning. When she was younger, Lilia had often tried to trick the Enchantment, getting up in the middle of the night, or staying prone in bed until long past her usual hour -- to no avail; the maid always appeared on time. Lilia sipped the cocoa, wishing that she could decline the too-sweet drink. But Queen Rose I, Lilia’s great-great-grandmother and the Great Benefactress of the kingdom, had decreed that the queen should have a cup of hot chocolate upon awaking. And so the queen did. Queen Rose I had made a Great Sacrifice a... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
