Cryptic folklore (The Goat Man of Maryland)

Welcome to the creative habits podcast. I'm your host Phil, and today we'll be delving into the mysterious legend of the Goat Man of Prince George's County, Maryland. Our journey begins in May of 1971 when George Lizama, a University of Maryland student, conducted an undergraduate folklore project on the Goat Man. This project later found its place in the Maryland Folklife Archives. According to Lizama's paper, the Goat Man was said to be located on Tucker Road in Clinton, Maryland. But the story doesn't end there. Later that same year, in October 1971, reporter Karen Hosler stumbled upon Lizama's project in the Maryland Folklife Archives and decided to report on it in the Prince George's County News. However, this time, the Goat Man's location was placed near Fletchertown Road in Bowie, Maryland. A curious twist in the tale indeed! The intrigue deepens as Hosler's report delved into a fascinating theory about the Goat Man's origins. It was suggested that the creature's roots could be traced back to the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center. As we explore this cryptic topic, we'll uncover the various versions of the Goat Man legend and the accounts of those who claim to have encountered this enigmatic creature. Is the Goat Man merely a figment of folklore and urban legends, or is there something more to this elusive being? As we continue our investigation into the enigmatic Goat Man of Prince George's County, Maryland, we uncover more intriguing aspects of this captivating legend. While the origin of Goatman stories can be traced back to the early 1970s, some of its most haunting legends are set in the 1950s. During this period, reports of mysterious dog disappearances and deaths emerged within the county, which locals attributed to the elusive creature known as the Goat Man. However, a closer examination of the remains revealed a different story. The deaths of the unfortunate dogs were more likely the result of passing trains, dispelling some of the more chilling claims surrounding the Goat Man's involvement. Despite this, the allure of the legend persisted, fueled by the human fascination with the unknown and the inexplicable. The Goat Man became a fixture of local folklore, capturing the imaginations of young and old alike. Among the many eerie details that fed into the myth, graffiti with the haunting message, "Goatman was here," began to appear throughout the county, leaving an unsettling mark on the landscape and minds of those who encountered it. Even law enforcement found themselves drawn into the intrigue, receiving frequent calls reporting Goat Man sightings. While some of these reports may have been genuine, a significant number turned out to be pranks. Nevertheless, the persistent belief in the Goat Man's existence revealed a community deeply invested in preserving and perpetuating its cryptic lore. As time passed, the Goat Man legend continued to evolve, intertwining with the fabric of Prince George's County's cultural identity. The stories expanded, drawing upon a rich tapestry of local history and blending fact with fiction, leaving behind a legacy that endures to this day. In our next episode, we will delve further into the sightings and encounters with the Goat Man, exploring the chilling accounts and attempts to unravel the mystery behind this elusive figure. Join us as we journey deeper into the heart of darkness and attempt to shed light on the enigma of the Goat Man of Prince George's County, Maryland. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/creative-habits/message

This episode of Fanachu originally aired on Facebook on April 8, 2020 just a few weeks into the first COVID-19 lockdown on Guam. In that time of crisis, the divisions on island between civilian and military or federal and territorial relations became increasingly apparent, whether in terms of restrictions on commissary privileges for locals, the quarantining of the USS Theodore Roosevelt on Guam after a coronavirus outbreak happened onboard and overall the lack of transparency from the US Department of Defense. All of these issues can help us better understand Guam's current and continuing colonial political status. This episode featured as guests representatives from the group I Hagan Famalao'an Guåhan: Victoria-Lola Leon Guerrero, Rosario Perez and Heather Garrido. We begin our conversation with a discussion about Studio 3: Studio 3 is a all-encompassing marketing company. They specialize in digital marketing, but also do print, and other media. If you have an idea and you bring it to them they can give you a product. Prior to joining the agency, he was going to college and was working at the university as a math mentor. He was on break and he wanted to start programming. He went out on Christmas Eve and decided to try to get a job in the field. He sent out a bunch of resumes through Craigslist and that is how he landed at Studio 3! Right away they threw him into a project and had him build a web site. He started at a time before mobile responsiveness was really big, but he had them build for that and he changed a few other technologies he knew would be helpful. After a year or so he became lead developer and the company kept growing. The company now employees sixty employees, ten of which are engineers. What about becoming CTO - how did that transpire? It all started during a meeting he had with HR, the person he was meeting with asked him where he saw himself in five years. He replied honestly telling her he saw himself as CTO of this company in 5 years. It turns out the CEO of the company at the time was thinking the same thing. The CEO took him to lunch a week later and he told Jesus he wanted to make him CTO. A few months later he became CTO. He says now that he is CTO it hasn't changed much for him, hierarchies are non-existent to him. The main difference is now he is involved in the company's strategy, and that is something he is still learning about. What about his nomination for 2018 CTO of the year by the Los Angeles Business Journal - has that changed anything for him? It was amazing, he says he felt like he didn't belong! He was among big name CTOs: the CTO of the LA Clippers, Los Angeles' CTO, Playboy's CTO, Verizon's CTO and Disney's CTO, etc. At the dinner for the nominees he sat at a table with LA's CTO and he had a great conversation with the Clippers' CTO. He was nominated again for 2019! Also on today’s CTO Studio, we dig into his actual experiences as CTO a bit more, I asked him to share the first obstacle he had while CTO.  One of the first tasks he was given was to build a reporting platform. His background is primarily building web sites, which were mainly static or perhaps had a few business logic components involved but not too many. A reporting platform on the other hand is a full-on MVC application!   In addition to being the CTO, he was also a developer so there were a lot of technologies he had to grasp very quickly so he could build an MVP. After many iterations and a year later, they finally had a working system  that was useful for the company. Changing directions a bit, we talk about how his mom came to the United States and why she left Guadalajara. We talk about the realities of being stopped at border crossings and traveling through the airports as immigrants, and how DACA has shaped him and what most people misunderstand about the legalities of becoming a citizen via DACA.   We wrap up with his thoughts on the tech scene in LA and how he's seeking a community there. Join us for those topics and more on today's CTO Studio.
