Louisiana governor calls for MAJOR PUNISHMENT for athletes who REFUSE to show up for National Anthem
Recently, Jeff Landry, the Governor of Louisiana, raised a call for the conception of fresh guidelines necessitating student-athletes' presence during the performance of the national anthem at sports competitions. The impetus for this came after spectator consternation, when witnesses noticed the absence of the women's basketball team from Louisiana State University (LSU) during the national anthem at their regional final match this week. It seems tension brewed as the LSU team was noticeably missing from the court whilst the sounds of the national anthem filled the arena, shortly prior to their clash with the Iowa Hawkeyes. This absence was met with forceful criticism, and the unfurling controversy wasn't the only disappointment for the team as they faced a bitter defeat, with Iowa bagging the game 94-87. Images of the opposing squad of Iowa players, conspicuously standing hand in hand, symbolizing unity as the national anthem marked the preface to their event, yet with the absence of their LSU counterparts, provided a stark contrast. This drew attention to the fact that the LSU players had exited the court before our anthem was performed, triggering a wave of disquiet. Echoing the concerns of vocal critics, Governor Landry, from the Republican side, made a strong case, suggesting that educational officials should consider making it mandatory for athletes to maintain presence during national symbolic routines. Delinquent behavior could potentially result in severe ramifications, tailored to resonate with the importance of such national traditions. The governor shared his unique connection to the sport, revealing his mother's past as a women's high school basketball coach during the turbulent times of desegregation. He acknowledged his deep respect for both the sport and Coach Mulkey yet emphasized that upholding respect for the unity and protection represented by our national flag takes precedence. He argued that respect for the individuals who put their lives on the line to safeguard our freedom, and respect for our flag that binds us together as a nation, should be regarded as a higher calling. As such, it was time for college boards, inclusive of the Regent, to inculcate a policy mandating attendance during the national anthem by student-athletes, with the risk of forfeiting their athletic scholarships otherwise. In his view, such an approach is less about imposing sanctions and more about nurturing values of respect and patriotism - values that university coaches across the country should strive to inculcate in their charges. The national anthem is a unifying symbol, one that engenders a shared loyalty and love for our country, and presence during its performance should be a non-negotiable responsibility. In tandem to this unfolding narrative, Coach Mulkey herself has been caught in the spotlight after allegations made by The Washington Post. The published piece unleashed a series of criticisms against her, including displays of volatile behavior towards officials, less than ideal interactions with journalists, holding onto deep-seated resentments, and confrontations with her own players. Reports suggested an ongoing rift with player Brittney Griner, and the controversial feature in The Washington Post also pointed fingers at Coach Mulkey for displaying harshness towards homosexual players. These accusations have added fuel to an already blazing controversy, furthering the divide in opinions about Coach Mulkey and her coaching style. However, ready to fight back, the coach and her legal counsel have made clear their intention to counter these allegations. They are steadfast in their stance that the claims circulating in the media are baseless and damaging, and have even produced an affidavit to counteract one of the critical claims raised against her. The narrative is indicative of the high stakes and emotional tension plays within sports, the intricate balancing act of personal values, institutional policies, and public sentiment. This series of events has roped the realms of politics, athletics, and education policy into a twist that will potentially shape the future conduct of college athletes. While ensuring respect for the national anthem and the values it represents is a noble endeavor, it remains a challenge to strike a balance that honors both the freedom of individuals and the overarching unity of the nation. This is a conversation that ultimately throws into question the interconnectedness of personal actions, sporting conduct, and the charisma of our national unity. The conversation around policy change is situated within larger discourses about freedom, patriotism, unity, and respect, and so these critical developments make waves beyond the Louisiana border. Courses of actions taken in response to these circumstances could potentially set a precedent for other educational institutions nationwide, affecting the dialogue around student-athletes' conduct. From New Orleans to New York and Seattle to Maine — and from suffocating wildfires to deadly heat waves, drenching rain, hurricanes, floods and saltwater intruding into drinking water —many Americans have experienced the devastating impacts of the climate crisis. Now they have begun asking: How much more can we take? Colette Pichon Battle, an award-winning lawyer and climate justice organizer whose work focuses on creating spaces for frontline communities to gather and advance climate strategies that help to steward the water, energy, and land, has some answers.Pichon Battle is a Louisiana native who began her work in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, when she and so many others lost their homes there. Known as a leading voice in climate justice and Black liberation movements, she founded the Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy (GCCLP), focused on equitable climate resilience in the Gulf South. Recently she has expanded her vision as the Co-founder and Vision & Initiatives Partner for Taproot Earth that includes work in Appalachia, the global Black diaspora and geographies across the world, with an emphasis on climate migration and global climate reparations. Donielle Watkins, Co-Director of the D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana, joins us to discuss her passion for helping individuals with special needs have access to fun and enriching activities. Donielle and her husband, Brian, founded D.R.E.A.M.S. in 2008, so that their son, Logan, who was born with spina bifida, could participate in activities and sports along with other kids with special needs. "DREAMS began when we were sitting at a baseball game one day and Logan looked over at us and asked, 'When am I going to get to play?' It stopped us in our tracks." Logan Watkins was the inspiration behind the DREAMS Foundation of Acadiana. His indomitable spirit is a source of joy for all who know him. There were no organized sports activities of any kind for children with special needs. Donielle found a program that had had some success up North and established a Little League with fifty kids with special needs. After the ball game was over, Logan looked at his mom and asked, "When does basketball start?" Logan just wanted to be like every other kid. The acronym, D.R.E.A.M.S., stands for Disability, Resources, Education, Activities, Management, and Services. DREAMS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit serving 700 kids in Lafayette, Vermilion, Iberia, and St. Martin Parishes. Participants enjoy year-round activities such as basketball, softball, soccer, bowling, gardening, cheer, dance, music therapy, swimming, art, theater, and fitness classes. It boggled Donielle's mind how fast DREAMS grew. Many volunteers stepped up to offer arts, gardening, and sports activities. Individuals such as Damon Vincent of TrainUnique have even gone on to open a professional gym for people with special needs and provide for his family. DREAMS welcomes all and has participants from five years of age to 60 years of age, with many having Downs syndrome, autism, or cerebral palsy. "When you have a child with special needs, you accept certain things. He'll never play football. You accept that it's a new way of life. But who doesn't accept it? Little Logan. When we were sitting at a baseball game one day and he looked over at us and asked, 'When am I going to play?' it stopped us in our tracks." With a small budget, Donielle works hard to spread the word of DREAMS' work. Many people who would benefit don't know DREAMS exists. The 2010 Census indicated that 12,000 individuals in Lafayette parish would benefit from this service. The need is great and there is much work to be done. With a full-time job as an accountant, Donielle Watkins spends all of her spare time working to grow the reach of DREAMS. Her husband and Co-Director of DREAMS, Brian, is a special education teacher at St. Thomas More high school in the Options program; In 2014, Brian was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Louisiana Governor's Office for Special Needs. This work was jump-started by a $25,000 grant from the La. Department of Revenue and a donation of $5,000 to pay for wrapping the food truck. Currently staffed by 21 employees with unique needs, they manufacture ten different types of Kane River Meat Pies that are baked and sold at 12 grocers across Acadiana. At special events where they bring the food truck, you can purchase 2 stuffed pies and chips for $10.00 Donielle loves to bring the meat pies to businesses and will pre-contract with businesses that have 50 or more employees to bring the truck for lunches. "Eventually we'll be the Subway of meat pies," Donielle says. With tempting offerings such as boudin & cheese, spicy Mediterranean beef, and chicken alfredo, she may just be right! Hurricane Katrina was a large Category 5 Atlantic Hurricane that caused more than 1,200 deaths and $125 billion in damage in August 2005, particularly hard hit was the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas. It was at the time, the costliest tropical cyclone on record, and is now tied with 2017's Hurricane Harvey. The storm was the third major hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, and the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the lower 48 states. Katrina began to develop on August 23, 2005 as a tropical depression. Early the following day, the depression intensified into a tropical storm as it headed generally westward toward Florida, strengthening into a hurricane two hours before making landfall at Hallandale Beach on August 25. After briefly weakening to tropical storm strength over southern Florida, Katrina emerged into the Gulf of Mexico on August 26 and began to rapidly intensify. The storm strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It made landfall over southeast Louisiana and Mississippi on August 29. There is controversy to this day as to the strength of the storm when it came ashore. The National Hurricane Center determined that the system weakened as it crossed the coastline to a Catagory 3, yet evidence and surveys after the storm and the complete and utter destruction lead some to suggest that it was still a Cat 5. Flooding, caused largely as a result of fatal engineering flaws in the flood protection system known as levees around the city of New Orleans, caused the greatest loss of life. Eventually, 80% of the city, as well as large tracts of neighboring parishes were under water for weeks. The flooding also destroyed most of New Orleans' transportation and communication facilities, leaving tens of thousands of people who had not evacuated the city prior to landfall stranded with little access to food, shelter or basic necessities. Many of those left behind were people of color and others in working class neighborhoods. The scale of the disaster in New Orleans provoked massive national and international response efforts; federal, local and private rescue operations evacuated displaced persons out of the city over the following weeks, but to many the response was too slow. Multiple investigations in the aftermath of the storm concluded that the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, that had designed and built the region's levees decades earlier, was responsible for the failure of the flood-control systems. The emergency response from federal, state and local governments was widely criticized, resulting in the resignations of FEMA director Michael Brown. Many government officials were criticized for their responses, especially the New Orleans Mayor and the Louisiana Governor, and President George W. Bush. The congressional elections the following year brought about a 31-seat swing from the GOP to the Democrats and control of the U. S. House of Representatives to the Dems. As a result of the Democratic victory, Nancy Pelosi, became the first woman and the first Californian elected House Speaker the change of control in the House was attributed by many, in part, to the inadequate response to Katrina the year before. Everyone's best guess as to why she is refusing to come is that the National Press would come with her — and THEN everyone in America would know the Democrats had deliberately destroyed everything that was working to secure the security of the United States!In celebrating Juneteenth, it is important to remember it was the Republicans who freed the Slaves who were owned by Democrats. But in creating Juneteenth as a National Holiday, the Democrats are, once again, trying to make the Blacks think they are “the good guys” and the Republicans are the evil ones….at least when you hear what some of the Congressional leaders had to say about it. The claim is Justice Roberts told Justice Breyer that he would make certain Donald Trump would never be re-elected.While still unverified by Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr, it is starting to look like Chief Justice Roberts and some of his fellow Supreme Court Justices do not want to enforce the Rule of Law according to the US Constitution’s exact words. Louis sites a rumored report where Justice Roberts is unwilling to hear cases related to the election and Justice Thomas replied “This is the end of Democracy, John.”A high school football player in Corpus Christi, TX, charged back onto the field and assaulted a referee after being ejected from the game. The referee suffered a shoulder injury and probably a concussion from the attack. The player was arrested, booked, and charged with assault. The player also has a similar history as a soccer player. Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, are appalled that a high school athlete would behave so badly; but they do not believe punishing the entire team is appropriate. Dr. Joshua Clegg Caffery, director of the Center for Louisiana Studies at UL- Lafayette, is our guest. Josh has deep historical ties to the university, having earned master’s and doctoral degrees in English and folklore studies from UL - Lafayette. His great-grandfather, Sen. Robert Martin, is the namesake for UL - Lafayette's Martin Hall. Locals are familiar with "Ambassador Caffery Parkway" which is named after one of Josh Caffery's family members, Jefferson Thompson Caffery, one of the first graduates of UL - Lafayette (then known as "Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute), who served as a U. S. Ambassador to Columbia and Cuba and worked for 43 years in foreign service under eight U.S. presidents: Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, F. D. Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower. Caffery's family has also had many successful politicians and business people of note, including Donelson Caffery, a civil war veteran and U. S. Senator representing Louisiana, as well as Patrick T. Caffery, a New Iberia native who served as a Louisiana State House Representative and member of Congress, and other family members who made profitable livings as sugar plantation owners. The late Louisiana Governor, Murphy James "Mike" Foster, Jr., was a relative, having family connections through the common thread of the Murphy family. Caffery emphasized that President Andrew Jackson was the catalyst for the opportunities opened to his family in the early 1800s which led to their economic success. A young man, husband, and father of two small children along with his talented wife, Claire Oliver, Josh’s career has already taken many paths which have incorporated his skills and interest in folklore. He is the author of two books, “Traditional Music in Coastal Louisiana: The 1934 Lomax Collection,” which included a Grammy-nominated CD compilation, and “In the Creole Twilight: Poems and Songs from Louisiana Folklore,” a collection of poems inspired by Louisiana myth, legend, and oral history. Joshua Caffery is the author of two books, “Traditional Music in Coastal Louisiana: The 1934 Lomax Collection,” which included a Grammy-nominated CD compilation, and “In the Creole Twilight: Poems and Songs from Louisiana Folklore,” a collection of poems inspired by Louisiana myth, legend, and oral history. Caffery served as head of the English Department at Episcopal School of Acadiana. He was an Alan Lomax Fellow in Folklife Studies at the Library of Congress and also served a fellowship in folklore at Indiana University. He took a sojourn into private enterprise, working for the acclaimed jewelry manufacture, Stuller, in helping them identify and market the ideal pieces to meet their clients' needs. An acclaimed musician, known for the French folksongs he performed with the Red Stick Ramblers and Feu Follet, Josh Caffery received a 2010 Grammy nomination for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album for his performance and songwriting on the “En Couleurs” album by Feufollet. He also received a Grammy nomination in 2016 for Best Regional Roots Album, "I Wanna Sing Right: Rediscovering Lomax In The Evangeline Country." The Center for Louisiana Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette was established in 1973 to plan, promote, and pursue programs that provide scholars, students, and the public with a better understanding of Louisiana history and culture. After her retirement, she coordinated the medical internship program for the School of Kinesiology. Kathy served 18 years as the Executive Director for the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and remains on its board of directors. She is a 20 year member of the Louisiana Governor's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports where she served as the first, and only, female Executive Director of that organization.

Long went from traveling salesman to Louisiana Governor, and then US senator, through his mastery of the media. Then once in power, he waged a war against it. Special guest, Rudy Macklin was appointed by governor Edwin Edwards to serve as director of the Louisiana Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (1992) and was later hand-picked to establish the state’s first minority health office under governor Mike Foster called, the Louisiana Bureau of Minority Health Access and Promotions (1996) to minimize health disparities among underserved racial and ethnic populations in the state through collaboration, advocacy, and education, and to promote culturally competent programs aimed at improving access to health care services. For the past twenty-three years, Rudy has served as an adviser to the Louisiana Department of Health and the Legislature on health policy issues affecting health status and access among underserved immigrants, refugees and various racial/ethnic populations. Rudy is a graduate of Louisiana State University and was a former NBA Basketball player with the Atlanta Hawks, the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers.
