Check out the video of this over at Substack or YoutubeYou ever notice how when you love something there's always someone who loves to tell you how much they don't like that thing. As a Swiftie, I experience this all the time. People who don't like Taylor Swift LOVE telling Swifties they don't like her, why they don't like her and how much they don't like her. As a Dylan fan, for every 4 people telling me how much they love Bob like me, there's always one who has to point out “Oh yeah, great song writer but his voice is terrible.” The latest version of this is folks who not only didn't like A Complete Unknown but outright refuse to se it or dismiss its existence because Todd Hayne's 2007 film, I'm Not There, existed first. Early this week, an article dropped with a little quote from Cate Blanchett, star of I'm Not There, praising the film. Last Friday, on the holiday of Purim, I was dressed in what I think was a pretty spot-on Chalamet-esque Bob Dylan costume (specifically from the last scene of A Complete Unknown. At a Purim party, someone felt the need to tell me why they refuse to see ACU because of I'm Not There. Check out the video for the full story and rant. And for the love of Bob, can we please stop yucking other people's yums? Welcome to Songs of Experience: A Bob Dylan Podcast, where we explore the man and the music one song at a time. Henry welcomes a fellow midwestern boy and 80's-Bob defender, Matt Simonson to talk about "Man Of Peace" from Dylan's 1983 album, Infidels.Follow along with the lyrics:Man of PeaceWritten by: Bob DylanLook out your window, baby, there's a scene you'd like to catchThe band is playing “Dixie,” a man got his hand outstretchedCould be the FührerCould be the local priestYou know sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceHe got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongueHe knows every song of love that ever has been sungGood intentions can be evilBoth hands can be full of greaseYou know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceWell, first he's in the background, then he's in the frontBoth eyes are looking like they're on a rabbit huntNobody can see through himNo, not even the Chief of PoliceYou know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceWell, he catch you when you're hoping for a glimpse of the sunCatch you when your troubles feel like they weigh a tonHe could be standing next to youThe person that you'd notice leastI hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceWell, he can be fascinating, he can be dullHe can ride down Niagara Falls in the barrels of your skullI can smell something cookingI can tell there's going to be a feastYou know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceHe's a great humanitarian, he's a great philanthropistHe knows just where to touch you, honey, and how you like to be kissedHe'll put both his arms around youYou can feel the tender touch of the beastYou know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceWell, the howling wolf will howl tonight, the king snake will crawlTrees that've stood for a thousand years suddenly will fallWanna get married? Do it nowTomorrow all activity will ceaseYou know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peaceSomewhere Mama's weeping for her blue-eyed boyShe's holding them little white shoes and that little broken toyAnd he's following a starThe same one them three men followed from the EastI hear that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace Follow @songsofbob, @henrybernstein.bsky.socialIf you would like to support hosting my podcasts, please check out my Patreon where for $5 I will give you a shout out on the podcast of your choice. The last decade has seen the Belgian national team transform spectacularly from also-rans to serious competitors. The Red Devils finished third in the 2018 World Cup and have become regular holders of the World No 1 ranking, with their current crop of players considered to be the country's second golden generation. But who could possibly have seen it coming? Well, if you had been on Merseyside in the late summer of 2008, you might just have had an inkling. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Mark Godfrey (@thatmarkgodfrey) and Ben Jack (@benjack94) of The Belgian Football Podcast (@BelgianPodcast) to look back on the time that Belgium's Standard Liège left their mark on both sides of Stanley Park - and sowed the seeds for their nation's golden era. Episode No. 465 features artist Virginia Jaramillo. The Menil Collection is presenting "Virginia Jaramillo: The Curvilinear Paintings, 1969-74" through July 3, 2021. It is the first solo museum exhibition of Jaramillo's sixty-year career. Curated by Michelle White, the show features a series of paintings that Jaramillo made featuring the joining of line to color against mostly monochromatic backgrounds. The exhibition is also a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of "The De Luxe Show," one of the first racially integrated exhibitions in the United States, which was presented in Houston in 1971. (Art historian Darby English's book 1971: A Year in the Life of Color examined the exhibition. English discussed the book on The MAN Podcast in 2017.) Jaramillo is a California-born painter whose abstractions have long explored space, line, geography and the physical remnants of civilizations. In the last decade alone, she has been included in major scholarly exhibitions such as curator and art historian Kellie Jones's "Now Dig This: Art and Black Los Angeles, 1960-80" and "Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties," which Jones curated with A. Carbone, and Mark Godfrey and Zoe Whitley's "Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power." Jaramillo's paintings are in the collections of museums such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Kemper in Kansas City, the Metropolitan in New York, the Norton Simon in Pasadena and the Virginia MFA in Richmond.
Mark Godfrey, director of Beyond Ministries, shares with us how revelation reveals, creates and transforms our reality. Recorded live at Reality Church, Sunday 20 September 2020.
The recent arrival of six Chinese super trawlers in Liberia, capable of capturing 12,000 tons of fish -- more than twice the country's sustainable catch -- highlights the growing problem of what to do about the growing presence of China's distant fishing fleet operating off the coast of West Africa. For years, Chinese trawlers in Ghana, Nigeria and elsewhere in the region have taken advantage of poor governance, corruption and the inability of these governments to enforce fishing regulations. Today, the Chinese vessels largely operate beyond government control, prompting an increasingly serious environmental crisis brought on from over-fishing that also endangers local coastal communities who depend on these waters for their livelihoods. What, if anything, can be done to rein in China's distant fishing fleet operating off the coast of West Africa? Two guests join Eric & Cobus this week to explore that question: Mark Godfrey closely follows China's distant fishing fleet as a contributing editor for the industry publication Seafood Source and explains how Chinese government subsidies play a critical role in this crisis. Then, the Executive Director of the Accra-based sustainable fisheries NGO Hen Mpoano, Kofi Agbogah, joins the discussion to talk about how the Chinese fleet benefits from the lack of any meaningful enforcement of Ghana's fishing laws.JOIN THE DISCUSSION:Facebook: www.facebook.com/ChinaAfricaProject Twitter: @eolander | @stadenesque SUPPORT THIS PODCAST. Amidst a climate of uncertainty and social distancing due to COVID-19, writer and e-flux journal contributing editor Elvia Wilk and artist Anicka Yi discuss various changing global ecologies, viral and otherwise. Their original in-person conversation was planned on the occasion of Tate Modern’s selection of Yi for the annual Hyundai / Turbine Hall commission. A symbiotic organism in its own right, Anicka Yi's work fuses multi-sensory experience with synthetic and evolutionary biology to form lush bio-fictional landscapes. Utilizing a “biopolitics of the senses,” Yi challenges traditional approaches to the human sensorium, emphasizing olfaction as well as microbial and embodied intelligence. Through her research and “techno-sensual” artistic exploration, Yi is opening new discourse in the realms of cognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning, introducing concepts of the sensorial ecology of intelligence, the machine microbiome, machine ecosystems, and “biologized” machines. Maintaining a practice focused on co-subjectivity, Yi’s projects include collaborations with engineers, robots, synthetic and microbiologists, computer scientists, perfumers, ant and bacterial colonies, algae, tempura-fried flowers, and snails. Anicka Yi lives and works in New York City. Her recent solo exhibitions include Gladstone Gallery, Brussels; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Fridericianum, Kassel; Kunsthalle Basel; List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts; The Kitchen, New York; and The Cleveland Museum of Art. Yi’s work was also featured in the 58th Venice Biennale, 2019. Yi has screened her film, The Flavor Genome, at the 2017 Whitney Biennial and the International Film Festival of Rotterdam, 2017. In 2016, she was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize for outstanding achievement in contemporary art. She is represented by Gladstone Gallery and 47 Canal, New York. Yi's Hyundai Commission at Tate’s Turbine Hall is scheduled to open in October 2020. It will be curated by Mark Godfrey, senior curator; Petra Schmidt, production manager; and Carly Whitefield, assistant curator.

In the first of a new series, Steve Mitchell and Mark Godfrey look back at English football in season 1990/91. He'll be talking about Neville Southall, the Liverpool/Arsenal rivalry, presenting shows in different eras, and his appreciation of the hit movie, Pretty Woman.
Today’s episode takes us back to Liverpool but to the other end of the colour spectrum. In recent seasons, Everton have lived in the shadow of their cross-city rivals, not least since Liverpool started making it to Champions League finals and Everton could only struggle with Europa League fixtures. But things aren’t all terrible for fans of the club. An eighth-place finish last season puts them in and around the sort of area that their fans expect them to be in. With investment and another season of Marco Silva, along with another poor showing from the big six in the league and Everton could creep into the upper echelons of the league hierarchy. But is this all they have? Hope of other teams slipping up? Or is there something more concrete to hold on to? Joining us today is a face that will be familiar to many in the Everton-supporting community: Mark Godfrey. Mark was the editor of the recently departed The Football Pink magazine and website and has been an Evertonian through thick and mostly thin for over 35 years. He occasionally guests in other publications such as When Saturday Comes, the Everton fanzine When Skies Are Grey, and the Scottish football magazine, Nutmeg.

What goes into creating a brand? How do you define it? Do you spend as much time as you should thinking about it? Mark Godfrey is the owner of Parker Madison, a "brand (re)engineering agency" as they call it. Mark tells us how the art world can tell you a lot about how to create a brand, why it helps to have someone else examine your organizational culture, and what it means to "dress for recess."
For this episode, I'm joined by the frontman of The Football Pink, Mark Godfrey to discuss one of the great underdog stories and inspiration for idiots all over the world to try crane kicks - The Karate Kid. The discussion flies from the class system, the work ethic of the youth of today, and to whether Daniel's mother would let the building caretaker near her son in the modern world. If you like the podcast, please rate/review on iTunes and share on social media. You can also find The Football Pink on Twitter and Facebook.
It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer months, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. In this episode, we find ourselves in the blue half of Liverpool. Across the past couple of decades, Everton have been experiencing something of a purple patch in which, but for a few seasons, they have been finishing consistently in the top half of the table. Now, after a couple of dud seasons at the end of Roberto Martinez’s tenure, they find themselves returning to their place amongst the best of the rest, finishing 7th in the league just outside the newly demarcated top 6 that has appeared in the last couple of seasons. With Ronald Koeman now in charge of the club and a place in European competition, there is a level of positivity about the club, not least due to a frenetic spending spree in the summer transfer window. But it is hard to know what is next for the club: the gap between the top six and everyone else has never been wider and it seems unlikely that Everton will bridge this gap in a season. Is the only goal consistency then? Or should Everton target cup competitions in order to give their fans the glory they crave? Joining us today are two faces that will be familiar to many in the Everton-supporting community: Mark Godfrey and Chris Smith. Mark is the editor of The Football Pink magazine and website and has been an Evertonian through thick and mostly thin for over 35 years. He regularly guests in other publications such as When Saturday Comes, the Everton fanzine When Skies Are Grey, and the Scottish football magazine, Nutmeg. Chris is a writer and blogger who runs therussianlinesman.com and appears in other publications, not least Mark’s The Football Pink, from time to time. Born in the late eighties, he has only really encountered Everton at a low ebb, but hopes that that’s about to change.

AGNSW photography symposium 2012: Borderlands: photography and cultural contest
Susan Best, Senior Lecturer College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales This paper considers the strategies used by Brazilian photographer Rosângela Rennó to generate interest in what she calls ‘the little stories of the downtrodden and the vanquished’ (Rennó, 2004). These stories include the ‘inglorious’ episodes of history, the shameful events of the past that successive Brazilian political regimes would like to gloss over, which she says can be found or uncovered in the ‘lowest categories of the image’: vernacular photography, identification shots, portraits. Rennó does not take photographs herself instead she recycles existing photographs of this kind. Her practice involves both ‘found’ and ‘sourced’ photographs, to use Mark Godfrey’s distinction between images collected by chance and more purposeful or motivated assemblies. This paper will focus on three series that use sourced images: Imemorial [Immemorial] (1994), Atentado ao Poder (Via Crucis) [Attack on Power (Stations of the Cross)] 1992 and Cicatriz [Scar] (1998-99). Rennó’s view is that she has a ‘duty to help these images to be seen’. Dr Susan Best teaches Art History at the University of New South Wales. She is the author of Visualizing Feeling: Affect and the Feminine Avant-garde (London: I B Tauris 2011).
