In questa puntata, Betty Senatore racconta un film che ci trasporta nel Libano della guerra civile, rivissuto attraverso i cimeli di chi all'epoca era una ragazzina e oggi vorrebbe solo dimenticare. Director Deb Cryan and actor Chris Guertin drop by to discuss THE MEMORY BOX, a new play that is running at Phoenix Stage Company.
Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 21:4Whenever Gabriella visited her grandparents, Grandma usually called her into the kitchen to help prepare a snack. But Grandma didn't call her today. Gabriella sighed as she rocked slowly in her grandmother's favorite chair. "How's school going?" asked Grandpa."Okay." Gabriella looked at the wall where a picture of her grandparents was hanging. She closed her eyes tightly and wished Grandma would be standing there when she opened them. But that couldn't happen, of course."You miss Grandma, don't you?" Grandpa asked quietly. A tear slid down Gabriella's cheek. "I miss her too," said Grandpa. "Sometimes I want to call out to her to talk with her. It's hard to accept the fact that she isn't here anymore." He opened the drawer of a table and pulled out a box. "When I feel especially sad, I look through this memory box. As each picture or item brings back memories, I thank God for the special times--and the ordinary ones--I could spend with Grandma."Grandpa held out the box, and Gabriella took it. "Oh, here's a picture of Grandma planting flowers out front!" Gabriella said. "And here's one I drew of them." Gabriella and Grandpa talked a little about the lovely garden Grandma had each year."Shall we thank God for that?" asked Grandpa. Gabriella nodded, and Grandpa prayed, "Jesus, thank you so much for Grandma and for the time You allowed us to share with her. Thank you for the memory of the beautiful gardens she planted. We miss her so much, but we know she's with You now. We thank You for that too, and for the hope we have knowing we'll see Grandma again one day when you raise all those who know you from the dead. Help us remember that you're with us, and give us strength and comfort." A few tears wet Grandpa's face, and he hugged Gabriella very tightly."I have an idea," said Gabriella. She went to the kitchen, and Grandpa followed. He smiled as Gabriella began putting crackers and cheese on a plate, just like Grandma used to do. "Grandma used to tell funny stories when we were in the kitchen together," Gabriella said with a grin. "The funniest one was about how she met you." She giggled and gave Grandpa a hug. "I'll tell you what she said."- Nance E. KeyesHow About You?Has someone you loved died? Even when you know they're with Jesus, you'll still feel sad and miss them. Tell Jesus about it--He understands your pain. Look forward to the day when you'll be reunited with loved ones and Jesus will get rid of sin, pain, and death forever. In the meantime, thank God for the good memories you have of that person and the happy times you shared.Today's Key Verse:He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. (NLT) (Revelation 21:4)Today's Key Thought:Thank God for happy memories

1. Write a Letter. This could be to your ex or to the one who is gone. This can offer a safe and private space to pour out your emotions. Take your time. Write anything that comes to mind, whether that includes regrets or the unknown of how to move forward without them. 2. Bury It (Literally, Not Figuratively). Okay, this may feel a little “woo-woo.” Yet, this practice offers a symbolic way to let go. 3. Give Yourself Permission to Feel. Many of us try to fight our emotions, especially when they are negative. But what if this time, you gave yourself permission to feel it? What if you allowed yourself to cry until you couldn't anymore? 4. Be Patient. Time is your friend here. While we can't change the past, we can learn to that as time goes on we may feel better and that practicing patience with ourselves is the best way to go. 5. Say Goodbye. Whether you had a chance or not, maybe closure wasn't there. Or perhaps the time didn't allow for a proper farewell. Or maybe you just wanted more time; so much was left unsaid. 6. Create a Memory Box. This provides somewhere you can go when you're really missing your loved one. A memory box might include a simple shoebox filled with small items that are sentimental to you or remind you of them. 7. Plant Something in Their Honor. Seriously! Where there has been loss, give life. This might mean planting a new tree or annual plant to signify the circle of life and honor the one lost. It can also provide a place where you can visit and think about your memories together.
Kim Chakanetsa talks to two Beirut-based creatives who made it their mission to tell women's stories. Joana Hadjithomas is a Lebanese artist and director. Her work has been exposed at the Victoria and Albert museum in London and at the Guggenheim in New York. Her latest movie, Memory Box, inspired by her own experience of being a teenager in Lebanon during the civil war, was the country's entry to the 2023 Oscars. Madonna Adib is a Syrian writer and director whose work revolves around LGBTQ+ rights, identity and migration. Her latest documentary, Let My Body Speak, explores the experiences her body stores: her childhood in Damascus, witnessing the Syrian revolution, and falling in love with a woman. Produced by Alice Gioia (Image: (L) Madonna Adib, credit Elsy Hajjar. (R) Joana Hadjithomas.)

Are you tired of feeling the Monday blues? Research shows that productivity takes a nosedive on Mondays, and half of us can’t even make it to work on time. It’s no wonder why we all dread the start of the week. But what if we could change that? What if Monday became a day of […]
Get our family scripture songs: https://cart.thrivinginmotherhoodpodcast.com/bible-scripture-songs/ As a mom, I knew if I could only get one thing into my children's minds and hearts, it would be scripture. When my oldest was two years old, I decided we would start making up songs to add to our favorite verses because the scriptures I still had memorized from childhood were put to tunes. But, after a few years, we had created a lot of songs and didn't have any sense or organization to review them. That is when I came across Simply Charlotte Mason's scripture memory box idea. It only takes a few minutes each morning at breakfast for us to review our four songs, and by the end of the month, we've sung every song that we've memorized so far. Some days, all of us are singing in unison with gusto and other times, I'm still plugging along myself when I can't get all of my kids to focus at the same time. But either way, this is part of our daily rhythms that everyone has come to expect and look forward to. I love that all day long, I hear scripture as my kids are singing our songs as they are playing, doing their jobs, or just hanging out. This was an unintended outcome of our scripture memory habit, but it brings us all so much joy. My kids also love when they recognize scriptures each week at church from the speakers. If this is something you want to incorporate into your family, start small. We started small when my oldest was two - just a new scripture every few months. Almost eight years later, my kids now bring scriptures they love from their own reading for us to memorize as a family. I love that this practice has become collaborative over time. Check out this week's video to see how we've set up the system to work for us so that we stay on top of reviewing our scriptures.
The adventures in AI continue, with this WondervoxAI produced audio edition of my short story, Memory Box. It's one of the selected stories in my recent collection, Tundra (2000 - 2022). Memory Box tells the story of Risa, a young girl whose father dies suddenly, and how she grapples with that loss. We're introduced to the colorful and sometimes unsavory characters in her life, as she navigates a world that can often seem merciless. We experience her resilience, determination and spirit as she comes to terms with a young life forever changed. Fasten you headphones! If you'd like to purchase it as an MP3 file, you can find it at my Payhip storefront for $2.99.
Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige talked about their multidisciplinary work as artists, photographers, and filmmakers. They discussed their art work and installations, as well as their movies, notably Memory Box.Filmmakers and artists, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige question the fabrication of images and representations, the construction of imaginaries, and the writing of history. Their works create thematic and formal links between photography, video, performance, installation, sculpture, and cinema, being documentary or fiction film. The artists are known for their long-term research based on personal or political documents, with particular interests in the traces of the invisible and the absent, histories kept secret such as the disappearances during the Lebanese Civil War, a forgotten space project from the 1960s, the strange consequences of Internet scams and spams or the geological and archaeological undergrounds of cities.Created and hosted by Mikey Muhanna, afikraEdited by: Ramzi RammanTheme music by: Tarek Yamani https://www.instagram.com/tarek_yamani/About the afikra Conversations:Our long-form interview series features academics, arts, and media experts who are helping document and/or shape the history and culture of the Arab world through their work. The Toppie chat this time was recorded on the 9th April 2022, the other Toppie scenes on the 17th September 2022. There is also a new Muffleyontour composition, FORCEFIELD around the 43 minute mark. On the podcast this week is Valene Campbell. She calls herself a changemaker for her passions, children's literature, and Alzheimer's disease awareness. After vacationing with her mother in 2016, Valene observed her Mom's increasing forgetfulness, confusion, and irritability. Valene knew immediately upon their return home that her mother required a physical assessment. This life-altering circumstance led her to write her third children's book with a lead Black character to demystify dementia and Alzheimer's within the Black community. The story, The Amazing Zoe and Grandma's Memory Box, also educate children whose families are impacted by dementia and who often participate in the caregiving of a grandparent or loved one. The Amazing Zoe & Grandma's Memory box is a heartfelt and touching story designed to help kids understand Alzheimer's Disease. Zoe loves to visit her grandma! But this time, she can't help but feel that something is different. Her grandma has forgotten to bake Zoe's favorite cookies, and sometimes she forgets Zoe's name! But luckily, Zoe's Mom is there to help her learn all about Alzheimer's Disease. Zoe even devises a clever and creative way to help her grandma remember all her most treasured memories.

A heartbreakingly beautiful novel, The Memory Box unlocks an unforgettable epic story of love and war, from the million-copy-selling author of The Letter, Kathryn Hughes. If you adored The Nightingale, The Tuscan Contessa or My Name is Eva, this is the book for you. Some love stories can't be forgotten... Jenny Tanner opens the box she has cherished for decades. Contained within are her most precious mementoes, amongst them a pebble, a carving and a newspaper cutting she can hardly bear to read. But Jenny knows the time is finally here. After the war, in a mountainside village in Italy, she left behind a piece of her heart. However painful, she must return to Cinque Alberi. And lay the past to rest. After a troubled upbringing, Candice Barnes dreams of a future with the love of her life - but is he the man she believes him to be? When Candice is given the opportunity to travel to Italy with Jenny, she is unaware the trip will open her eyes to the truth she's been too afraid to face. Could a place of goodbyes help her make a brave new beginning?
