Why is vulnerability still seen as weakness? We unpack the cultural conditioning that tells men to “man up,” share personal reflections on emotional suppression, and challenge the idea that real strength means staying silent.Whether you're a man learning to sit with your emotions or someone who wants to better understand the men in your life, this conversation is an invitation to start showing up more honestly—with yourself and others.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet this week's guest yet but I hope to at some point. She's a whole vibe and my new favorite DJ. I have been playing this mix almost every day since I got it 2 months ago. The amount of raw soul coming through is really special. Please welcome Toyacoyah. She's is an indigenous DJ known for blending ancestral rhythms with modern breakbeats. She began her DJ career in the late 90s at the University of Oklahoma, curating beats for her own drum and bass radio show. After moving to Austin, Texas, she became a resident DJ for Mental Note, a night dedicated to liquid funk and jazzy drum and bass. Now based in Chicago, she continues to share her passion for fast-tempo music across the Midwest. Today's episode is a conversation in which Ellie Pike, host of the Mental Note podcast (this episode first aired on 2/27/23), and I discuss my adult ADHD diagnosis and the workarounds I've learned to get things done and function in my life. Join us! Show Highlights: KC's background as a messy person whose life changed dramatically when her two children were born How KC had to learn how to keep a functional home in a totally new phase of life How an ADHD diagnosis as a young mother made sense of her whole life Why KC's ADHD diagnosis was “missed” during childhood and youth because she didn't “fit the mold” Why ADHD is NOT simply the inability to pay attention How success in school changed for KC during college when most of the work was to be done outside of class How ADHD affects what is going on in the brain, regardless of external behavior that may appear normal What KC has put in place to help her finish necessary tasks, even when they don't interest her The difference between motivation and task initiation–and why we treat them differently How ADHD medication changed everything for KC Why late-diagnosed adults with ADHD usually hit some kind of barrier, event, or transition that brings everything to a crisis point The connection between KC's depressive episodes and isolation, under-stimulation, and boredom KC's advice for listeners about creating systems that work WITH your brain: “Do a little, and do it as a person that deserves to function.” Why KC's message is that “care tasks are morally neutral” and have nothing to do with someone being a worthwhile human being  Resources: Connect with Ellie Pike and find out more about the Eating Recovery Center and Mood and Anxiety Center: www.mentalnotepodcast.com   Connect with KC: TikTok, Instagram, and Website  Get KC's book, How to Keep House While Drowning

Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO MAKE A MENTAL NOTE and ON A SIDE NOTEIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to make a mental note. When you make a mental note of something, it means you make an extra effort to remember it. Sorry if I'm squinting a lot today, it's brighter out than it looks. I should've worn my sunglasses. I'll make a mental note to bring my sunglasses out next time I make a video when it's sunny. So when you make a mental note like I just did in that example, you don't write it down so that you remember it. You just try really hard to remember it without writing it down, without putting it on a list, without typing it into your phone, or some other way to remember it. After school today, I have to actually go and pick up my daughter from school, from a different school. So I need to make a mental note about that, so I don't forget to do it.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianAnd on a side note, I'm not sure if you noticed, I did get a haircut. And that is the second phrase. The second phrase is on a side note. When you say on a side note during a conversation, it means you're adding information that's not about the main topic. If you're having a discussion, let's say you're having a discussion about Canada, and you're talking about how you want to have, you want to go on a trip to Canada someday, and you like Canada. And then someone might say on a side note, I think that it's a bad time to visit Ottawa, because there's a big protest there. So it's adding, it's a phrase we use to add a little bit of information to a discussion that maybe isn't part of the main topic that you're discussing. So, like I used it, on a side note, I did get a haircut, and now it's a little colder than I thought out here.Anyways, to review, to make a mental note of something is to just try and remember it. And when you say like on a side note, before you say something during a discussion, it means you're gonna add some information. Maybe that's important, maybe that isn't important to the discussion that's happening. So on a side note, I did get a haircut. I think I mentioned that three times now. I should stop talking about my haircut.Let's look at a comment from a previous video. This is from Bonita. Bob, you're funny today. Thank you for the lessons. And my response, you're welcome, Bonita. So I guess what I'll say is this. A few things have happened in my life. I wouldn't say that I'm funny, but I would say I'm in a good mood. I've been in a good mood lately for a number of reasons. Number one, I feel way better than I did a few weeks ago. Way better. Number two, I've been walking every day again for about the last five or six days. I get up every morning, and I go for my walk. That just makes me feel good. Number three, the new semester.Sorry, I'm sinking in the snow here. The new, on a side note, I'm happy I wore my boots today, because the snow, I thought I could walk on top, but I'm kind of crunching through it with every step I take. I'm not sure if you can see that.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)

The word crazy can mean a lot of different things to many people but it always seems to revolve around this negative connotation of being “too much”. But what does that really mean? Could there ever be a limit to expressing yourself to others or perhaps a healthier way that doesn't send someone spiraling into oblivion when you start crying or venting??? Have you ever wondered why the person you want to have a relationship with isn't ready, or doesn't seem to be on the same page as you?  We want other people to be ready to make changes at the same time that we are ready.  But that is rarely the case, and we can't make someone else ready for change.     We have to ask the hard question of, are we making someone else a priority over ourselves.  Because we have our own traumas, our own experiences, and our own things that we have to work through and we have to work through those and find joy for ourselves.  We can't expect other people to fill that void and we can't expect others to be seeking out the same things at the same time as us.   Finding joy should be a priority, and if someone or something is distracting from that, we have to examine why we are allowing that person or thing to distract us from the joy we deserve.     --   Topics Discussed:   Are we ready for the relationship we are in? I wanted to talk to you about one of my favorite quotes. “It is easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken men”. What does this mean? How can we support the men in our lives? I work with a lot of women in my practice who are trying to “fix” the man in their life. Although it may feel instinctual, we have to remember that everyone's healing journey is their own and it is not your responsibility. If we know someone who needs help, we need to encourage them to get professional help. Also, one of the best things we can do is to spend our time and energy investing in this next generation by focusing on spending quality time with our children and investing in them.  This is a wrap on season three! I want to challenge you today to take a look at your life and be honest with yourself, what is truly your passion? What would you choose to do as a career if there were no barriers? Being sick is never any fun, it’s miserable.  When you add onto being sick the fact of being single and not having anyone there to help take care of you it can be even harder to get through.  It’s important to realize that when we feel sick we will feel down mentally, and that’s a normal thing.   During those times it’s very important for us to reach out for help. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness and often it can be extremely important not just for our physical health, but our mental health as well.  In addition when we are sick we don’t know if things may take a turn for the worse, and if they do it is crucial we have someone available that we have reached out to who knows what we are going through. Talking through or writing down your mental thoughts during this time can be especially beneficial as it helps us process through the loneliness and emotions that we go through during these times. -- Topics Discussed: Reaching out for help. Dealing with sickness on your own. The emotions that come with being sick. -- Connect with us! Where we will be talking about mental illness and how we deal with it in our daily lives. We feel like these episodes are going to go deep into our own personal experiences when dealing with things like depression, panic disorder, anxiety, ptsd, and more. We wanted to create this series as an outlet for those who are struggling and to reassure our listeners that it's okay to experience these thoughts or feelings and to know they are not alone. In the midst of a global pandemic and uncertain times, we think it's a good idea to create this safe space to talk about things that cloud our minds and try and find some clarity amongst ourselves with you all.
