In our first episode, Cloe and Kate get down and dirty with one of the most damaging things to women's physical and mental health - diet culture! We've all been influenced by it, it affects so much of our lives but you probably don't even notice what evil influence it has on you.We teach you how to recognise diet culture, how to get out of the shame/spend spiral it encourages and what to focus on instead to rise above the BS.Warning - Discussion of eating disorders. There's also some swear words here because we talk about that time a diet book reminded us that dieting is easier than losing a loved one. Welcome to episode 23 of Season 12 of The Coode Street Podcast. This week, after a brief and mostly irrelevant discussion of whether the proposition that Ray Bradbury as the quintessential October writer means anything at all outside North America, Jonathan and Gary actually try to focus on an important question: whether posthumous publications actually do anything to enhance an author's reputation. We make distinctions between works that the author clearly wanted to be published (like Philip K. Dick final four novels), works that the author clearly did not intend for publication (like some late Heinlein manuscripts), and works which the author may or may not have tried to publish during their lifetimes (such as a number of R.A. Lafferty manuscripts completed or continued by other hands, including novels by Walter M. Miller, Jr., Robert Jordan, and Terry Pratchett). We even touch upon whether the J. Michael Straczynski The Last Dangerous Visions is a useful idea decades after Harlan Ellison began the project. Do author's estates see posthumous publication as a means of keeping an author's name alive, as a purely commercial proposition, or as a way of arguing for an author's canonical status? Other authors touched upon include J.R.R. Tolkien, John M. Ford, Philip José Farmer, and even a few examples from mainstream fiction, such as John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces, which won a Pulitzer Prize more than a decade after its author's death. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode.

Ep 354 - Setting the Standard for Renewable Cities Guest - Dr Walter Mérida   As much of the world switches over to electric transportation, the “What about this?” and “What about that?” questions are popping up from those people who are saying, “Not possible.”   On the other side of that discussion is Dr. Walter Mérida, who prefers to ask “What if?”, as in “What if there was a way to integrate all of our disparate urban infrastructure systems to create a cohesive, comprehensive, and connected platform – driven by low or no-carbon technologies?”   Dr Mérida isn't just asking – he's doing. His labs, which are energy innovation hubs, recently secured $23 million in public and private funding to convert a city-sized block on the University of British Columbia campus into a smart energy district.   The plan is to build an advanced solar array on top of a parking lot next to a substation. The parking lot will be retrofitted with bidirectional electric vehicle charging stations. That means these stations are equipped so that when vehicles plug in, the stored energy in the battery is sent into the grid and back again. In other words, reversible EV charging.   Reversible EVs have passive energy in a sitting car that can be used by active participants in a smart energy storage network. Electricity is used on demand and will be directed to an electrolyzer to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, supplying the refuelling station for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.    The hydrogen produced by this process is 100 percent renewable or “green hydrogen.” A secure 5G wireless technology platform will connect the system's components to each other and to other on-campus systems and assets for optimal productivity and efficiency. It's a complicated system, one that is needed to realize renewable cities.    Stuart McNish invited Dr Walter Mérida to join him for a Conversation That Matters about the complex and achievable process of integrating renewable energy into the transportation and energy grid we need to successfully transition to electrified transportation.   Please become a Patreon subscriber and support the production of this program, with a $1 pledge https://goo.gl/ypXyDs

Introduction: If you believe the science and scientists who gave you modern conveniences, including smartphones and microwave ovens, then you need to believe that climate change is real, near immediate, as in getting to carbon neutral in 30 years or so, and dire in its consequences if we don't. The same scientists and the same science that gave us those modern tech tools, are saying that climate change is real and must be dealt with sooner rather than later. That is the core message that I received from today's guest, Alexander Slocum, Walter M. May and A Hazel May Professor of Mechanical engineering at MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. That is the subject of today's episode. Continuing: Today's blog is not a transcript of the call, but it contains the same facts and arguments written by Dr. Slocum. "My goal:  I wish I could get deeply faithful Christians (especially  evangelicals) to read, think, pray… and I think they would see the light and push this forward… Climate change, far left screams we are doomed, give up everything, far right howls God will save us, so what is a citizen to do? Many believe human’s ability to look at the world around them and choose their path originates from the story of Adam and Eve.  This raises the question if “God” could predict everything in advance, why was the snake allowed in the tree? Judging by history, humans have always been free to choose their own path, and it is by this that they will be judged, as evidenced by society’s laws and their enforcement.  Indeed, societies formed and spread as Humans exercised dominion over the earth by means of their brains and opposable thumbs; however, as is now apparent, humans have flourished at the expense of the natural world of which many seem to forget they are also a part. As we came from Nature, we are thus part of it; and just as if we do not take of ourselves we wither, so it shall be with our environment and hence ourselves.  Nature itself actually could care less, for even after the great asteroid ended the reign of the dinosaurs and most life, Nature bounced back J.  Balance is needed, but how is it best achieved? God having created everything also knows about science and engineering (the internet could not exist without science).  And science and engineering are run by the Natural Laws that God also created (and scientists and engineers discover and use).  Laws such as discovered by Einstein and a host of other brilliant people that have given us the miraculous civilization in which we live.  Chief among these laws is the 2nd law of thermodynamics which states entropy always increases, and thus perpetual motion is impossible.  This law thus means in order for something to happen, there must be a source of energy; and in our universe there is one fundamental source of energy from which all others evolve. That source is when two atoms of the simplest element, hydrogen, fuse to form a new atom, helium, that has a slightly lower mass than that of the two hydrogen atoms individually.  What happened to the little bit of mass lost?  It was turned into pure energy: “light” with all its brightness, warmth, and glory to spread out in all directions.  This is E=mc2: energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. People from every religion read by light, talk on cell phones, access the internet.  Many travel weekly by car to visit places of worship to learn more about God’s words and some travel by air now and then to visit Holy places.  And all of these modern marvels that make possible the spreading of God’s words and laws are made possible by the discovery and understanding of God’s Natural Laws. Scientists and engineers have not only discovered many of God’s Natural Laws, they have learned that they can put them in a form that needs no discussion with God directly for clarification as they have mastered the fact that “mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe” (Gali...

Ensuring sustained economic growth while minimising environmental impact is a global challenge. Access to affordable energy has reduced poverty by more than a half since 1990, and yet approximately 1 billion people still live without access to the most basic energy services. Moreover, the rest of us need to face the mounting evidence on the negative impacts of our energy use (poor air quality, climate change, geopolitical instability, etc.) However, and despite the bad news, there is cause for optimism: UBC is the first Canadian university with a sustainability policy, and its research and innovation are leading the way to a low-carbon economy. The energy transition will require political will, significant investment, and above all, clarity of thought. In this talk, Walter Mérida, Director, UBC's Clean Energy Research Centre; Associate Dean of Research and Industrial Partnerships; Professor, UBC Department of Mechanical Engineering, will describe the challenges and opportunities in sustainable energy systems. He will provide a few examples of UBC's world-leading research on some of the enabling technologies including renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, and advanced electric vehicle infrastructure. These new technologies can enable urban assets to become active participants in city-scale energy management schemes. The new technologies, services and business models may enable cities to go beyond zero impact: providing a net benefit to human and planetary wellbeing. Walter Möbius spent decades as head doctor at the Johanniter Hospital in Bonn. One of his patients was former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who became a good friend. Now 77, he's retired but still a keen photographer. On Talking Germany, he talks about the lessons he learned from his years in the medical profession. Born in Bonn in 1937, Walter Möbius studied medicine and traveled the world as an ameteur photographer and rock climber. From 1978 to 2002, during most of which time Bonn served as the seat of the German government, he was head doctor at the Johanniter Hospital in Bonn, where many politicans were treated. One of them was Helmut Kohl, who became a close friend. Although Möbius retired 12 years ago, he still visits his former workplace on a regular basis and his artwork is exhibited in one of the hospital wards. He believes that hospitals should be pleasant environments, and that if they are comfortable and well cared for, their chances of recovery are greater. He also works on behalf of the Salesians of Don Boscos youth services.

I'm a software engineer that is working for Box currently. I think a lot of people probably know me from the books that I've written, mostly on the topic of JavaScript and the talks that I've given also on that topic. And a lot of that relates back to my work when I was at Yahoo. I was there for about five years and was the lead on the Yahoo homepage redesign. And a lot of what I do is really just try to solve problems in real life and then share what I did with everybody else in whatever way I think is most appropriate - writing or speaking or coming on podcasts.
