Meet Curtis Ashby, a cool artist who paints big murals and loves bird art. Curtis talks about how mural art is big in Washington and how it brings people together. Curtis explains that murals last a long time, like 10 to 20 years, which shows how strong this art is in Washington. He also talks about working with cities and groups like Spaceworks. This helps artists and business people team up and make their towns more colorful and fun. He shares how he plans his art projects at the start of the year. It's neat to learn how much thought goes into making these big, beautiful murals. Curtis also likes it when his clients give him some ideas for the mural, but he adds his own touch to it. This mix makes each mural special and tells a story. Curtis really loves birds and nature. He puts this love into his art as a way to remember his grandma. This makes his murals even more special and meaningful. Curtis talks about a big project he did near Tacoma Community College. It was tough to get it all set up, but he worked with the community and made it happen. Curtis likes to paint with friends and help other artists. This shows how artists help each other and make their community better. He also talks about the tools and skills he uses to make his murals just right. The podcast shows how Curtis' art is more than just painting walls. It's about stories, working together, and making places beautiful. You'll want to hear more about how Curtis and other artists are making Washington an awesome place full of art! Connect With Curtis
His career began as an aerospace engineer, Charles Hamilton starting at Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC), a Computer Aided Design (CAD) company, straight out of college. During his tenure at SDRC, Charles held various positions, including sales, lead application engineer, customer service engineer, and project manager. On today's episode, we are talking to Lizzi Whaley, CEO of Spaceworks Interior Architecture. Lizzi joined Spaceworks Interior Architecture in 2004. But when she heard her company was selling up, she decided (as a 28 year old, single mum living with her parents) that if the business was to be sold then she wanted to be the purchaser. She bought the company and became chief executive in 2006. We'll discuss the mindset shift moving from employee to employer, the importance of focusing ‘in' on your people and how to lead when you yourself are going through personal changes. As always, be sure to listen all the way through for all the good bits and for future episodes don't forget to subscribe to our podcast.
Listen in as Bristol Spaceworks owner Matthew Johnstone gives us some wonderful insight from his many years working and running flex spaces. Stay with us as we talk about how the last 30 years have changed and start to ponder what the next 30 years may look like!

This week we're joined by Jim Remar, CEO of the Cosmophere in Hutchinson, Kansas, the home of Liberty Bell 7, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of it's flight carrying Gus Grissom into space. A truly remarkable story, not just because of the mission being just the 3rd crewed launch of any vehicle into space, but because the capsule was lost at the bottom of the sea until 1999 when it was recovered and restored by the people at the Cosmophere. The space between stars is usually measured in light years, but this makes it less easy to acknowledge the true scale of the distance. Even the closest star system to Earth, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light years or 40.13 trillion kilometres from Earth. If we are ever going to bridge the gap between the stars, we will have to have some very fast spaceships, with extremely reliable, long-lasting technology on board. So does science allow for these spacecraft to exist? That’s what listener Allan wants to know, and to find out, Presenter Anand Jagatia speaks with Tracy Drain, a systems engineer at NASA JPL responsible for overseeing the development and missions of multiple unmanned interplanetary probes including some around Jupiter and Mars. She tells us the challenges involved with simply keeping our spacecraft working for the long-haul. Even if we can overcome issues of wear and tear over time, powering a ship to other star systems will not be easy. Today’s chemical rockets are too inefficient for the job, so we speak with Rachel Moloney, a researcher in electric propulsion to ask if this relatively new technology could power ships through interstellar space. Faster than light travel is the solution most often found in Science Fiction, but it goes against Einstein’s laws of relativity. Is there a way around it? Theoretical physicist Professor Miguel Alcubierre thinks there may be, and he describes the way a spaceship may be able to create a bubble of spacetime around itself to move faster than light without breaking these fixed laws. But there’s a catch... Molecular scale investigations have identified the mechanism which confers resistance to antimalarial drugs. Researchers hope work to turn off this mechanism could mean cheaper well known antimalarials can become effective once again. We look at the threat to weather forecasting from 5G networks, discuss the origins of much of the technology in our mobile phones and ask what food we’ll be eating in the future and how the past can inform this. Science fiction is full of people settling on distant planets. But even the closest stars would take millennia to reach with current speeds of travel, by the time any passengers reached an extra solar planet, they would be long dead. So CrowdScience listener Balaji asked us to find out whether humans could hibernate for interstellar travel? To uncover the science fact behind this idea, Anand Jagatia holds a tiny hibernating dormouse at the Wildwood Trust in Kent, and meets Dr Samuel Tisherman who puts his patients into suspended animation for a couple of hours, to save their lives after traumatic injuries that cause cardiac arrest. We ask if Dr Tisherman’s research could be extended to put healthy individuals to sleep for much longer periods of time? It’s a question that neuroscientist, Professor Kelly Drew is studying, in Alaska Fairbanks. She uses Ground Squirrels as a model to understand internal thermostats, and how hibernating mammals manage to reduce their core temperatures to -3 degrees Celsius. Anand speculates wildly with science fiction authors Adrian Tchaikovsky and Temi Oh whose characters in their books ‘Children of Time’ and ‘Do You Dream of Terra Two?’ traverse enormous distances between habitable planets. But is human stasis something that would actually be useful? John Bradford is the director of SpaceWorks, this company works with NASA to try to investigate human hibernation for space travel. He’s trying to make space-based human hibernation a reality, and it seems that may be closer than you’d think. Image: Mosquito. Science Photo Library

Ever wished you could miss an entire cold dark winter like bears or dormice? Kevin Fong explores the possibilities than humans could hibernate. This ability could help us recover from serious injury or make long space flights pass in a flash. The first report on human hibernation in a medical journal was in the BMJ in 1900. It was an account of Russian peasants who, the author claimed, were able to hibernate. Existing in a state approaching "chronic famine", residents of the north-eastern Pskov region would retreat indoors at the first sign of snow, and there gather around the stove and fall into a deep slumber they called "lotska". No-one has ever found these peasants but there is serious research into putting humans into suspended animation, for long distance space travel or for allowing the body to recover from major injury. The greatest clues into how to pull off hibernation comes from the American Black Bear. Dr Kevin Fong, an expert in trauma medicine, talks to Dr Brian Barnes, Director of the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska. He's done the most extensive study of black bears and observed how they slow down their metabolism. Fat-tailed lemurs are the only primates to hibernate. Duke University's Lemur Research Centre has discovered that they breathe just once every 20 minutes at their deepest torpor. These lemurs live longer than other animals of similar size. Could we find a way to use this trick of suspended animation? We could slow down out physiology ,cool down our bodies and hibernate during long space journeys. NASA too is working on how humans can survive trips to other solar systems. Kevin Fong goes to the lab of Professor Robert Henning at the University Medical Centre in Groningen where he's worked out how animals protect their organs when they slow their body metabolism , enter a state of torpor and then return to normal physiology. Rob Henning wants to apply this to humans, on earth and in space. Already doctors use cooling in patients who have serious head injuries. Could this technique be applied further to allow us to fight disease and buy time for surgeons in the hospital trauma unit? Producer: Adrian Washbourne Image credit: Spaceworks
"Passengers" Real Science. Interview with Dr. John Bradford Art Of Living Interview Series The movie “Passengers” is about the very real possibility of traveling to a new home around another star, or known as an exoplanet. It's fascinating to discover the real science behind that – to see how astronomers are discovering exoplanets and and finding ways that what we imagine could someday become a reality.” Today's guest is Dr. John Bradford, and he's doing just that...Dr. Bradford's firm, "Spaceworks," based in Atlanta, Georgia, is an engineering firm focused on future space exploration technologies, and working on the film ‘Passengers' about the movie's depiction of exoplanets and human hibernation relate to current research and projects, and informing us of the realities behind some of the movie's themes, and making this a reality. This is a wonderful movie, based on "hard science," and exactly what we should be seeing. My congratulations to cast, crew, SONY, NASA, and Spaceworks, for an excellent film. Enjoy.

Do our communities also bear the negative effects of under-compensated creative labor? Artists famously move residences and work space in response to the availability of low-cost space, often subsidized by development schemes. Tom Angotti of Hunter College Center for Community Planning and Development, Rosanne Haggerty of Community Solutions, and Paul Parkhill of Spaceworks discuss strategies towards long term creative space and community stability.
