Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Moving Day At Georgia Gwinnett College Over 1,000 students are moving into Georgia Gwinnett College's residence halls on Thursday and Friday, marking the start of the fall semester. The college has organized a smooth move-in process with volunteers assisting students and families, distributing water, and offering information. Students can also enjoy a photo area, snacks, and receive a residence hall T-shirt. Freshman Trekwan Gordon, from Palm Beach, Florida, and Amaree Caldwell, from Atlanta, are among those excited about starting college, with interests ranging from business to criminal justice. Freshmen JT Watkins and Yakhi Pitts are eager to meet new people and begin their studies, with Pitts also looking forward to integrating his marketing knowledge into his YouTube channel. STORY 2:  Gwinnett Teens Damage Local Football Field After Stealing Pickup Truck Gwinnett County police arrested two teenagers this week after they stole a pickup truck and used it to damage a high school football field. The suspects, 17-year-old Robert Krause and a 16-year-old female, faced multiple charges including aggravated assault, reckless driving, and theft. The truck was stolen from a driveway in Lawrenceville, and surveillance footage showed the suspects finding the keys. After damaging the football field at Mill Creek High School, they were tracked by police and nearly hit an officer while fleeing. The truck crashed, and both suspects were apprehended after a brief foot chase, with one being tased and the other captured by a police aviation unit. STORY 3:  Drivin N Cryin Returns To Suwanee To Celebrate 20 Years Of The August Concert Suwanee is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its August Concert series by reuniting with Drivin N Cryin, the band that played at the inaugural event in 2004. Known for hits like “Straight to Hell” and “Fly Me Courageous,” the Atlanta band will perform a free concert on Saturday, August 17, at Town Center Park. Founder Kevn Kinney, joined by bassist Tim Nielsen and drummer David V. Johnson, promises a nostalgic, old-school set, including acoustic performances with violinist Faye Petree. Kinney reflects on the band's upcoming 40th anniversary and recent changes, expressing excitement for a potential vinyl re-issue and new album. For more details, visit www.suwanee.com.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back   Break 2: INGLES 7   STORY 4:  Greater Atlanta Christian Grad Jasmine Jones 4th in Olympic 400 Hurdles Greater Atlanta Christian alum Jasmine Jones narrowly missed an Olympic medal, finishing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Paris Games. The 22-year-old ran a personal-best 52.29 seconds, just behind Dutch athlete Femke Bol (52.15), while American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone set a new world and Olympic record with 50.37 seconds. Jones, a recent USC graduate and three-time NCAA champion, qualified for the final with a semifinal time of 53.83. She previously led GAC to its first state track title and is the daughter of former NFL All-Pro safety Henry Jones. STORY 5:  Cirque du Soleil's 'Coreto' Set To Return To Gwinnett's Gas South Arena Olaf Triebel, artistic director of Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo," ensures every show is flawless, handling a complex array of logistics and coordination. With a tour featuring 19 trucks, 120 crew members, and intricate stage setups, Triebel manages everything from artist integration to technical departments. "Corteo," a unique show with a central stage setup, requires intense backstage coordination due to its dual-stage design. Having joined in March from another Cirque show, Triebel oversees the production's final North American performances before its European and future Australian tours. The Duluth shows run from August 15-18 at Gas South Arena. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: Gwinnett County Fair   STORY 6:     Suwanee planning to keep millage rate flat Suwanee leaders propose keeping the city's property tax rate at 4.93 mills, unchanged for the past 12 years. Public hearings will be held on August 15 and 27 to gather resident input before a final vote on August 27. Although the rate remains the same, higher property values would lead to a 7.13% increase in taxes. The revenue supports Suwanee's $19 million FY 2025 budget, which includes new positions, capital funding, maintenance, repairs, and operational costs, such as transitioning to electric vehicles and opening Town Center on Main. STORY 7:  GET OUT THERE: 5 things to do this weekend in Gwinnett County — Aug. 9-11 This weekend offers a variety of events:   Suwanee August Concert - Enjoy Drivin N Cryin and 10,000 Maniacs at Town Center Park on Saturday at 6 p.m. Free shuttles available, and food vendors will be present. Vanessa Fraction, Mia Jackson, and Akeem Woods visit Friends Like Us for a hilarious take on hot topics! Vanessa Fraction: Action Fraction is a fitting handle for the intelligent and hilarious stand-up comedian, actor, writer, television personality, and women's empowerment advocate Vanessa Fraction. A mother of two, working at the phone company in 2001, Vanessa Fraction hit the stage of a popular open mic at The Cotton Club, Chicago to sing backup for a co-worker. Performing the gig with a few girlfriends from church, they weren't great, but Fraction decided that night, she wanted to be on stage. She went back the next week to do a comedy set and got booked for a show. Two years later she landed the role of Monisha in Barbershop 2: Back in Business. Currently, Fraction is the high-spirited, outrageously funny co-host of Nappy Boy Radio Podcast hosted by rapper and producer T-Pain. She also guest hosts on the entertainment news television series Dish Nation (FOX) and can be seen in Universal Pictures' cinematic musical, Praise This written and directed by Tina Gordon, produced by Will Packer, Tim Story, James Lopez, and Sharla Sumpter. From Def Comedy Jam (HBO) to NickMom Night Out (Nick Jr.) to Laff Mobb's Laff Tracks (truTV), 1st Amendment Standup (STARZ), Mike Epps Live at Club Nokia, Just for Laughs Montreal Festival (2008, 2018), and Just For Laughs Chicago (2013), Fraction's bold and clever stand-up has been a welcomed highlight on these and other showcases. The demand for her comedic brilliance has garnered opportunities to perform abroad touring the UK and performing for the U.S. troops in Germany, Japan, and South Korea. After performing on The Monique Show, a year later she was offered her first writing gig. Fraction's versatility as a writer blossomed on shows like Raven's Home (Disney), The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS), the Triumph Awards (Bounce TV), and 106 & Park (BET). Fraction's passionate take on women's freedoms and rights to empowerment stretches beyond the stage. She is a certified self-defense instructor, and her branded style of teaching, Kicks & Comedy, equips women with life-saving self-defense skills and lifts spirits by infusing comedy. For those who do not know, this podcast is a love letter to my mother, Alice Faye Taylor. When this episode drops, it will be one year and one day since my mother has passed. Being a private person, it was hard to share my grief about her passing. However, I also think it is important. Black women are told to always be strong. Generationally, we have been taught to perform even when we are experiencing profound turmoil. As I honor my mother in this conversation, I invite my friend Beverly Oden to speak with me about her experiences with grief and loss. You may recognize Beverly's voice as she has been on the podcast two other times sharing her wisdom. If you haven't had an opportunity to listen, you can find them here: Unlocking Your Authentic Voice with Beverly Oden and Unlocking Sisterhood & Entrepreneurship with Beverly Oden and Mia Jackson . I am also inviting another person who has helped me through this experience, Marisa Renee Lee. After losing her mother, a cousin and a much wanted pregnancy, Marisa was in the throws of grief. With her catastrophic loses, Marisa chose to channel her experiences into a book. In Grief is Love Marisa reveals that healing does not mean moving on after losing a loved one. Healing means learning to acknowledge and create space for your grief. Please take a moment to honor Marisa's mother, Lisa, her cousin and her baby. Take Care. Pray Every day. There is something magical when Black women come together in sisterhood. True Sisters can talk in every way possible. From sharing wins to being transparent through the hard times, there is NOTHING like your Sister friends. In this episode, I am in conversation with two of dear friends, Beverly Oden and Mia Jackson. This is not the first time we are speaking on a podcast together. All three of us were a part of the podcast Game Changers Live, where our tagline was a "new view from the sidelines." We have had many changes since the last episode dropped in 2014 but one thing has remained: the love and respect we each have for each other...even if we all can't agree upon a favorite Lakers player! Mia Jackson is a marketing, communications and brand acceleration leader. Beverly Oden was heard in Episode 2: Unlocking Your Authentic Voice so if you did not have a chance to listen, please do (after you listen to this episode).
