On this Episode I introduce you to Dr. Andy Riemer. Here is his bio - Dr. Riemer is a board certified Ophthalmologist.  After earning his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduating at the top of his class, he returned home to Ludington, Michigan in 1994 to begin Riemer Eye Center. Today, the practice includes four locations: Cadillac, Ludington, Manistee and Shelby, Michigan. Dr. Riemer specializes in cataract and vision correction surgery like PRK.  In addition to comprehensive eye exams, he also treats Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and dry eyes. His medical training includes a medical internship at Ingham Medical Center in Lansing, Michigan and residency training at Michigan State University.  He also holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University. In addition to board certification, Dr. Riemer is also a fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology.  He remains a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Michigan Osteopathic Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the International Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Riemer is also a serial entrepreneur in the restaurant world. He has collected a number of properties in the Ludington area and is in the process of expanding that territory. This was a good chat, one I wish could have been a bit longer. Perhaps there will be a part two. This episode: You may wonder who can influence the culture of your Board of Directors. Some say that the Chief Staff Executive (CSE) cannot do that or should not do that. My guest this week says that's not so, and she has the track record to prove it. Cheryl Ronk, CAE, FASAE, Principal, So Right LLC, spent over 30 years as the Chief Staff Executive of the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE) where she learned from experience that not only can the CSE influence Board culture, it's part of their responsibility. Cultural influences come from nurturing and training Boards to have a clear understanding of their role and responsibilities to the organization; the CSE doesn't tell them what to do but they can and should show them HOW to do it. Influencing Board Culture in a positive way is directly related to creating the collaborative partnership between the CSE and the Board that is the mark of any successful nonprofit organization. If your 2024 list of resolutions includes "have a better relationship with my Board of Directors" then don't miss this conversation -- it will get you excited about the possibilities! How do you influence Board culture? On today's SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Donna Oser, president & CEO of the Michigan Society of Association Executives and a VIP member of the Small Business Association of Michigan. “Association work is generally defined in a couple of core areas,” she says. “We work to strengthen lives and we think about bringing people together towards a common purpose. And so we do that through things like standards of quality and safety, guidance, disaster relief, so much more.” The Small Business Association of Michigan is the only statewide and state-based association that focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan's small business community. We have been successfully serving small businesses like yours in all 83 counties of Michigan since 1969. We're located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol. Our mission is to help Michigan small businesses succeed by promoting entrepreneurship, leveraging buying power and engaging in political advocacy. When small businesses band together through the Small Business Association of Michigan, they achieve more than they could on their own.  Our 30.000+ members are as diverse as Michigan's economy. From accountants to appliance stores, manufacturers to medical, and restaurants to retailers, what unites the SBAM membership is the spirit of entrepreneurship…a spirit that drove you to start and continue to operate your own business because you believe you can do something better than anyone else is doing it! What would it take to make Detroit a “just city” – an actual sanctuary of justice for its residents? Amanda Alexander, founder and Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center is working on exactly that. Based on a wide range of experiences – from learning alongside ACT-UP AIDS activists, to spending time in newly post-apartheid South Africa, to the Movement for Black Lives – Alexander combines her background as a historian and an attorney to reimagine safety and justice in Detroit. In this episode of Shades of Freedom, Alexander weaves together her own experiences, and the long history of global civil rights movements, to discuss what's going on right now in Detroit, including innovative supports for community members that prevent contact with the legal system in the first place, shifting funds from a focus on policing to prevention, and supporting communities to define and create their own safety.Guest BiographyAmanda Alexander, founding Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center, is a racial justice lawyer and historian who works alongside community-based movements to end mass incarceration and build thriving and inclusive cities. Originally from Michigan, Amanda has worked at the intersection of racial justice and community development in Detroit, New York, and South Africa for more than 15 years.Amanda is a Senior Research Scholar at University of Michigan Law School, where she has taught Law & Social Movements and was an attorney in the Child Advocacy Law Clinic. “Safe and Effective Management of Pain and Addiction” was presented on January 22, 2019; by Carl Christensen, MD, Ph.D., D-FASAM; and Mark A. Weiner, MD, D-FASAM. The Institute of Medicine estimates around a 100 million Americans suffer with chronic pain, and it’s estimated that about 10% of our population has or has had a substance use disorder. Both chronic pain and substance use disorders are major public health challenges, and treating concurrent pain and substance addiction is especially challenging. Common prescribing practices intended to provide relief of acute and chronic pain can trigger relapse in people with substance use disorders and have also fueled an epidemic of opioid misuse, addiction and overdose death. People with pain deserve relief, and the good news is there are strategies for acute and chronic pain management that are safe and effective for people at risk of or in recovery from substance use disorders. This presentation will discuss various methods of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management and their relative risks and benefits, and describe creative approaches to effective pain relief for people in recovery from substance use disorders. Are you wondering what this PureReinvention thing is all about? In this episode, Mike Bills, principal of MB Strategies and founder of the PureReinvention Project, offers some background on how PureReinvention got started and looks ahead to what you can expect in 2015. QUOTE IT:  "We want to build this community of individuals who are using PureReinvention as a resource. A group of people who are willing to share and want to learn from each other." (1:07)  "While we may be saying today, "this is what we know," you have to remember we will learn new things tomorrow. That's the really cool part about PureReinvention, it's an ongoing, ever-changing very dynamic process." (4:42)    DIG IN:  How was PureReinvention created? At 5:48 Mike tells you how needs and insights from different industries collided to form a model for the reinvention process.    TAKEAWAYS: 1 – PureReinvention is about collaboration and sharing stories about the ongoing reinvention process.  2 – Look for the PureReinvention Position Paper by the end of the month. This paper will outline the fundamental five steps in the PureReinvention process and be available to you for free.  3- PureReinvention has many applications to different types of people:  • Board Members - PureReinvention requires active participation, ownership and leadership at the Board level.  There is a difference in Board roles and their leadership in the responsibilities and execution of this process.  • CEO – Responsible for driving the process.  • Employees - Have a huge stake in the outcome and must have ownership in the process.  • Member/Owner – Are the beneficiaries of reinvention, and should have the most vested position of all. Input must be continuously sought from this group must express their needs to make the process work.  4 – Association chief staff executives (CSEs) will have the opportunity to engage in PureReinvention at the Michigan Society of Association Executives' ORGPRO conference in June. Plus, you can catch us in Detroit for the American Society of Association Executives Annual Meeting in August. 5 – Your input, comments and questions are what make PureReinvention possible!
