Bessy (or Betsy) Bell and Mary Gray were two bonny lasses, and they may even have been historical figures, but the plague came from yon borough town and slew them both regardless. And thus was created a most romantic and picturesque place of pilgrimage.Bessy Bell is also a tune and we take a look at it's surprising history, from being scrawled in a book of sermons to the part it played in the heyday of a theatrical phenomenon. The tune we sing today isn't the traditional one; a quite different tune accompanied this song for a couple of hundred years. And yet there's a far better tune lurking in an old broadside, and I'm giving it a world premiere as the tune for Bessy Bell and Mary Gray.MusicInstrumental version of Betsy Bell and Mary Gray (trad)Betsy Bell and Mary Gray in the style of Maddy Prior and Martin CarthyHarp improvisationBessy Bell tune (trad)Go To Bed Sweet Muse (Robert Jones)Bessy Bell to the tune of A Health To Betty (trad)Beggar's Opera Overture (Johann Christoph Pepusch)'Twas Within A Furlong of Edinburgh Town (tune from Playford but sometimes attributed to Henry Purcell; words quite possibly by D'Urfey, arranged by Jayne Morrison)Betsy Bell and Mary Gray - full song (trad)FX from Freesound contributors djangoaltona, inchadney, boodabomb and bruno-auzetReferencesFrancis James Child (1904) English and Scottish Popular Ballads https://archive.org/details/englishscottishp1904chil/page/n13/mode/1up Letter written by Major Barry: http://journals.socantscot.org/index.php/arch-scot/article/view/168/166 Highland Notebook, Robert Carruthers: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=CZsHAAAAQAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false Bertrand Harris Bronson (1976) The Singing Tradition of Child's Popular Ballads: https://archive.org/details/singingtradition0000bron Fourpence Halfpenny farthing, from A Pepysian garland : black-letter broadside ballads of the years 1595-1639, chiefly from the collection of Samuel Pepys (1922) https://archive.org/details/pepysiangarlandb00pepyuoft/page/322/mode/2up Bessy Bell from Orpheus Caledonius https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/91483447 Oxford Book of Nursery Rhymes: https://archive.org/details/oxforddictionary0000opie/page/n9/mode/2upJulie Bumpus (2010) BALLAD OPERA IN ENGLAND: ITS SONGS, CONTRIBUTORS, AND INFLUENCE: https://etd.ohiolink.edu/apexprod/rws_etd/send_file/send?accession=bgsu1276055885&disposition=inline Miscellaneous works of that celebrated Scotch poet Allan Ramsay: https://deriv.nls.uk/dcn23/1056/7480/105674805.23.pdf Edinburgh Literary Journal, 1829 https://www.proquest.com/openview/f7929bf2f574263f/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=2773

Last year, the Journal of Social Computing published a https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.01351 (Special Issue) on the subject of Technology Ethics in Action. The special issue was the product of the Ethical Tech Working Group at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard, which was cofounded by Mary Gray and Kathy Pham. The ideas in the special issue span a range of critical and interdisciplinary perspectives, with essay titles ranging from “Creating Technology Worthy of the Human Spirit” to “Connecting Race to Ethics Related to Technology” to “The Promise and Limits of Lawfulness: Inequality, Law, and the Techlash.”  To learn more about the ideas in it, I spoke to its editor, Ben Green. Ben is a postdoctoral scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows and an assistant professor at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. His Harvard PhD is in applied mathematics, with a secondary field in science, technology, and society. In “Just Tech: Centering Community-Driven Innovation at the Margins,” Senior Principal Researcher Mary Gray explores how technology and community intertwine and the role technology can play in supporting community-driven innovation and community-based organizations. Dr. Gray and her team are working to bring computer science, engineering, social science, and community together to boost societal resilience in ongoing work with Project Resolve. She'll talk with organizers, academics, technology leaders, and activists to understand how to develop tools and frameworks of support alongside members of these communities. In this episode of the series, Dr. Gray talks with Dr. Desmond Patton, whose work at the intersection of social work, social media, and technology seeks to understand the root of aggression, grief, and trauma in ways that can help inform interventions for social workers and broader communities. Together, they explore Patton's learnings about the challenges of using AI in a field that's full of nuance and how informed technology can make positive social impacts in partnership with local communities. Dr. Patton also shares how his work on gang violence has grown his understanding of how social media can influence and transform the narratives about people.https://www.microsoft.com/research

The 1964 Supreme Court Case Jacobellis v. Ohio presented a highly subjective question to the justices: what is obscenity or pornography? How do you define it? Where do you draw the line? In response, Justice Potter Stewart gave us the iconic line, "I know it when I see it." His ambiguous answer works fine for humans who can make judgement calls on the fly, but the algorithms that rule our lives need rules that are much more concrete. Say you flag something as inappropriate on social media. How is artificial intelligence meant to answer a question that even the Supreme Court could not definitively pin down? That's where humans come in. Mary Gray, an anthropologist and co-author of the book,“Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley From Building a New Global Underclass,” explores the work and lives of the real people behind online processes that internet users may assume are purely algorithmic. From analyzing medical tests, to flagging questionable social media posts, to identifying your rideshare driver, Gray argues that the human touch of “ghost work” is not only essential, but this hidden workforce will continue to keep growing.

For this milestone episode, CUES Podcast listeners submitted their questions for experts to answer. So instead of featuring one or two experts, this show features seven! Instead of being centered on just one idea, this show covers three areas of major interest to credit unions and their leaders: reopening physical branches in light of the pandemic, reaching and engaging young members, and the future of credit unions 25 years out.Our first question about when credit unions might reopen fully comes at the 5:12 mark from CUES member Ron Kraus, chair of the board of $2 billion Together Credit Union in the St. Louis area. Kraus’s question is first answered by Mike Carter, EVP of CUESolutions Bronze provider Strategic Resources Management, Memphis, Tennessee. A second response is given by Steve Reider, president of CUES Supplier member Bancography, Birmingham, Alabama. Neither expert expects 100% reopening across the country by Thanksgiving and each has ideas about the larger implications of the pandemic on the financial services. The show’s second question is from CUES member Karen Bruce, associate board member at $1.7 billion America’s First Credit Union, Birmingham, Alabama. It's about how credit unions can best reach and engage young members and comes at 12:04.Bruce’s question is answered by three experts: Ben Stangland, president/COO of CUES Supplier member Strum, Seattle; Keith Brannan, chief marketing officer for Kasasa, Austin, Texas; and Jeff Fromm, author of four books and the president of Futurecast, a subsidiary of Barkley, New York. The three say young members are a great opportunity for credit unions and offer ideas for connecting with them. The third and final question in the show comes from CUES member Mary Gray, director of member engagement and programs at $1.8 billion A+ Federal Credit Union, Austin, Texas. It's about what credit unions will look like in 25 years and comes in at 25:06. Two experts with vision provide answers to Gray’s forward-thinking question: Steve Williams, principal with CUES Supplier member and strategic provider for technology and planning services, Cornerstone Advisors, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Chris Skinner, an independent technology commentator at The Finaser blog, the author of several books and chair of the Financial Services Club.Williams says in 25 years there is great opportunity for both large banks and grassroots financial services. He notes four words that come to mind about qualities that credit unions that can stay the course will have—purpose, talent, technology and scale—then elaborates on each. Skinner suggests not trying to compete with big banks but rather standing for something other than shareholders and profit. He believes credit unions have a great opportunity to deliver on this idea. The show also gets into:What listeners whose questions are featured in the show have appreciated about the CUES Podcast A favorite memory of CUES Podcast founder and host James Lenz from the first 100 episodesHow to submit your question for possible use on a future showThe great story about how Jeff Fromm ended up studying young consumers

Hidden beneath the surface of the web, there is an unseen workforce of proofreaders, designers, and content watchdogs who make the internet seem smart. Co-authors Mary Gray and Siddharth Suri took the stage, joined by GeekWire’s Molly Brown, to shine a light on these laborers in Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building a New Global Underclass. They asserted that companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Uber depend on the judgment and experience of this vast, invisible human labor force—yet despite their necessity, these workers usually earn less than minimum wage, have no health benefits, and can be fired at any time for any reason, or none. Gray and Suri introduced us to the people who make up these latter-day assembly lines: harried young mothers, professionals forced into early retirement, recent grads who can’t get a toehold on the traditional employment ladder, and minorities shut out of the jobs they want. Join Gray, Suri, and Brown for an exposition on “ghost work,” and a discussion on the ways we can ensure that this new kind of work creates opportunity—rather than misery—for those who do it. Mary Gray is a Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society and Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research. Her research looks at how technology access, material conditions, and everyday uses of technologies transform people’s lives. Mary is one of the world’s experts in the emerging field of AI and ethics, particularly research methods at the intersections of computer and social sciences. Siddharth Suri is a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research, and a computational social scientist whose research interests lie at the intersection of computer science, behavioral economics, and crowdsourcing. His early work analyzed the relationship between network topology and human behavior. Molly Brown is a freelance writer and editor covering tech, travel, books, and more. Her work is featured with GeekWire, The New York Times, Business Insider, NPR, Cambridge News, and others. Recorded live at The Forum at Town Hall Seattle on May 15, 2019.

While critics might call smell “the ugly stepchild of the sense family”, we beg to differ. Our sense of smell is deeply rooted in areas of the brain that process emotion, associative learning, and memory. Scent may be the least obvious of our five senses, but that’s exactly what makes it so powerful. And brands are catching on, utilizing the power of smell to attract people to retail spaces and sell them their products. So, what’s next for smell? Join Mary Gray Johnson and Anna French on this episode of cultural standpoints as we chat about the most powerful yet subliminal sense.

In 2012 I was consulting for a home and design magazine in Los Angeles and during that time, I produced my first design house. I truly loved the experience. I had the opportunity to work with amazing and talented designers like Azadeh Shladofsky, Molly Luetkemeyer, Christian May, Erinn Valencich and Potted amongst others. The house was in the heart of Hollywood, called Small Space, Big Style as it was a fourteen hundred square foot penthouse. We were open for about four months and there is very little remaining of this in the public space. There are a few videos on YouTube, some old blog posts and of course, back issues of the magazine. But no real documentation of what went into the project, the work of the immensely talented designers or the collaboration with the brand partners on the project like Snyder Diamond and the Warner Bros Prop Department. But there are the memories and the friendships that remain to this day. This episode features two conversations with two wonderful designers and truly exceptional people. First up is Leslie Shapiro Joyal of Shapiro Joyal Studio. Leslie and I spoke just before the opening of the Wattles Mansion Design House in 2017. Leslie was the first designer I spoke with on this project, her space was my first impression and what an impression it was. Sweeping views of Los Angeles from the Hollywood Hills location. How do you frame that as a designer? Well Leslie is going to tell you how she did it. And, she is also going to tell you about designing a showcase and working with unforeseen circumstances, like a pack of wild raccoons stealing your accessories every night. Seriously. Next up is Annette Gutierrez, a friend, amazing person and half of the design team behind Potted. She and Mary Gray provided the outdoor space in that Small Space Big Style design house in Hollywood and we have been friends ever since. Annette and I caught up at the WestEdge Design Fair in 2017. Potted provided plants and accessories for our Kelley Jackson designed California Beach Follies Cabana. I’m telling you the story about Small Space, Big Style because the idea behind a design ouse is that of any pop-up. Here for a short time and then gone. I stared Convo By Design to provide a lasting point of reference for these fleeting but shining moments in Southern California design. So, I hope you enjoy it and hopefully, it can provide some inspiration for your next project.

Purchase the book to read more at http://monsterivy.com ( http://monsterivy.com/ ) Gemma Louise Coldiron has two personalities. One is herself—easygoing, curious, and travel-hungry. The other is a dictatorial other half named Tansy, who only lets Gemma come out of their Victorian mansion to do the shopping every two weeks. Gemma also has amnesia, and Tansy’s too busy painting macabre art to be forthcoming about their past. The town speaks to Gemma about a “Mr. Hardin,” and it doesn’t take her long to learn she was married to the oil tycoon before he mysteriously went missing. While Gemma begs Tansy to tell her more about their life with the handsome stranger, Gemma soon learns that the town harbors a secret society. And Mr. Hardin? He was the leader. If Gemma can’t figure out what happened while maintaining her volatile relationship with Tansy, the town will assume Gemma killed Mr. Hardin—and even more alters will take root in Gemma’s already crowded mind. An acutely observed modern-day psychological thriller that plunges into the daunting abyss of mental illness, community indoctrination, and cult group-mind.
