This week Jack and Dan trade one big M Marxist for another, Milliband is out, Mattick is in. It’s quite a stark reversal, from a strategy of revolutionary reformism to one of spontaneous action by the workers and their primary organisational arm, the workers council. That’s right, Council Communism is on the docket for this weeks show and if we know one thing by now the lads always stand ready to be wooed by yet another camp of communists. Mattick’s critique of the reformist left is withering as he calls for not the revival of the old and moribund workers movement but an entirely new one. Is this an ultra-left podcast now? Returning to work and curbing coronavirus are not competing ideas. That is a false choice. We can have jobs and health by building back in new ways that improve workplaces, education and medical care while deterring the infection.  Co-hosts Edie Lush and Claudia Romo Edelman seek out provocative ideas for immediate change. They are joined in this search by Gillian Tett of the Financial Times, inventor and editor of the FT’s Moral Money newsletter and coverage. “The key question is how do we go forward and build back better and not merely survive but thrive in the future.” Dr. Oxiris Barbot, New York City Health Commissioner, says that “an equity lens” is essential to recognize that risk of disease weighs heavier on communities of color and lower incomes. Repairing this requires not only improved access to health care, but also to better housing, jobs and education. “We are only as healthy as our most challenged resident,” she said. Jack Hidary, the Artificial Intelligence expert, serial entrepreneur and leader of Alphabet’s X project in quantum computing, says that we have sixty days to use the crisis to convince leaders to adopt immediate innovation. He suggests, for example, that big companies decentralize and create satellite offices so no employee has to commute more than ten minutes to a desk. He says he has discussed this with WeWork. He also offers ideas for on-line learning and telemedicine. David Milliband of the International Rescue Committee speaks with Edie about how innovations spurred by the fight against coronavirus may have long-term benefits. Improved sanitary conditions, for example, curb other diseases in poor countries. Milliband notes that the simple instruction to wash your hands regularly is a major challenge for the three billion people who don’t have clean running water at home. Their conversation was part of a ‘ThinkIn’ that our colleagues at Tortoise run for their members and is included in Global GoalsCast with their blessing. Facts about the crisis and Actions to build back better are presented by Alice McDonald of Project Everyone. From our sponsor, Mastercard, Senior Vice President Amy Neale describes how Startpath, Mastercard’s startup network, solved a Covid-19 fundraising challenge for the City of Los Angeles in eight days.

In our 185th ever Rum Doings, our topic is, do we really need a government? John begins with an extraordinary confession: he felt a bond with Victoria Wood. We then move on to talking about the Paxman interviews with Cameron and Milliband, because we recorded this just before the proper debates, cos Nick was going on holiday. We turn to your advice questions, in the second part of our agonising aunt section. First up, what to have for breakfast. Then why not to commit suicide. Nick explains why insects aren't real, and we give people reasons to live. (For the links to suicide support lines, scroll toward the end of this article.) And we explain who gives better hugs: men or women. And Nick won't say if he loves John.

..I’ve just spent a few days in Wales…hence the song “The Magic Of Wales”….this was a sort of follow up to my Llanfair PG song….again sung by Paul….I put this on a single cassette…one song on one side and one on the other…same as Llanfair.. … got some good lines in it…The grey of Blaenau’s quarries with their crumbling hills of slate”…I was well pleased with this one. The news this week has been all about the terrible plane crash in The Alps….again the stupid news presenters are making wild guesses as to what happened…without any knowledge…which again achieves NOTHING…..one of the ridiculous questions was “Do you think there could be a possibility of terrorism?”….which only serves to get all the sheep who watch the news all worked up…for goodness sake WAIT AND SEE !!....This was followed by a woman whinging and moaning about how women are regarded in the workplace…they’re not problems … the families of the passengers on that plane have PROBLEMS. Speaking of sheep I was watching in disbelief as crowds of people lined the streets for the “Royal” funeral….of supposedly Richard the Third…..have some people got nothing going on in their lives…they were even throwing flowers on to the box…sorry…coffin….and one bloke got stopped from taking a selfie of himself by the coffin…despite blanket coverage from the television….parading a box of bones through the streets on the assumption that it was once a king of England defies description…with religious characters getting themselves into the act with “…ah yes King Richard would have thought this …and would have said that etc”…we definitely all need help. If I hear Jeremy Clarkson’s name once more I think I’ll scream…he had a barney with a bloke … and got the sack…THAT’S IT!!...I don’t care if he gets picked up by another channel…I don’t care if he starves…the only thing I wish he’d done was punch Richard Hammond in his annoying face….then I could enjoy watching the blanket news on the subject. Also the news has made a massive deal about Cameron saying if he wins the election he will only serve one more term…oh blimey…EVERYONE has piled in….he said he wants to spend more time with his family….then what do we get…..Milliband being photographed walking his kids to school….oooh look at me …I’m also a family man….talk about transparent….they must think we are all impressed with all this nonsense….mind you I’m beginning to think most of us are!
