After an unplanned bye week, we're back with the first episode of our 2024 readthrough! In 2021, we read through Invincible. In 2022, we read through Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Last year, we read through Deadly Class. This year, we're reading through DC Comics' Solo! Once a month, we're dedicating one of our episodes to an issue of Solo, which lasted twelve issues. First up, we're discussing issue one, which was Tim Sale's issue. Join us as we provide a general overview of Solo as a series and then discuss Tim Sale's broader work in comics. After that, we take a look at every story in Solo #1. There's also a brief but very special interview audio included in this episode: Back in 2019, Albert met Tim Sale at a convention and asked him a few questions. Timestamps: 33:25 - Albert's brief interview with Tim Sale 35:53 - Solo #1 Discussion If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Last year, we did an episode on shonen manga that proved to be one of our most popular episodes, so here we are again with a roundup of the first volumes of four more prominent shonen series: One Piece, Naruto, My Hero Academia, and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. One Piece and Naruto are two of the biggest of all time. My Hero is one of the hottest properties of current times, and as a comics podcast that's covered a ton of superhero comics, it made sense to check this one out. Frieren is a newer fantasy series that deserves all the attention and then some. Check out what we had to say about each of the first volumes of these popular series! The Men Who Created Gundam by Hideki Ohwada is a fictionalized version of the real story around the creation of Mobile Suit Gundam, the 1979 anime series that spawned a multi-billion dollar franchise that endures to this day. It's a gag manga that takes numerous creative liberties with real stories of the production history and key creatives (specifically, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and Kunio Okawara), and exaggerates things for comedic effect. Of course, depending on your sense of humor, your mileage may vary. There are definitely some things in this book that are a bit questionable. We thought it would be worthwhile to cover this book, seeing as how we read the entirety of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko last year. Think of this as a sort of postscript to our Origin coverage! Each month in 2023, we'll be devoting one of our episodes to covering one volume of Deadly Class by Rick Remender and Wes Craig! As we begin with volume 1, we also spend a chunk of the episode discussing our familiarity with the works of the different members of the creative team, particularly Rick Remender. From there, we go into our issue commentaries. Deadly Class was collected into twelve trade paperback editions, so that's what we're reading. The corresponding issues for volume one are issues 1 through 6. We hope you join us on this readthrough! In 2021, we did a readthrough of Invincible. This is it. It's the culmination of all things as we complete our yearlong readthrough and discussion of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko! In this White Base-sized episode, we not only provide our commentary of volume 12, but we also take the time to discuss the intriguing bonus features in the book. Plus, because this is the final episode of our coverage of the series, we also share some reflections on the series as a whole. Major events happen one after another in the penultimate volume of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko! It's not just plot developments that we see, but also some truly meaningful character work, including the culmination of several character arcs. There's always so much to discuss when we cover a volume of this book and, as usual, we provide our chapter-by-chapter commentary. Even as we near the climax of the series, we're blessed with some gorgeous Yas art. There are some beautiful color pages that are truly befitting of this volume's title, A Cosmic Glow. We've explored books that have been adapted into movies and TV shows on a previous episode. Today, we flipped the table around and talked about novelizations of video games, movies, and TV shows. Books mentioned on this episode: God of War by Chris Roberson and Tony Parker, By the Time You Read This I'll Be Gone (Murder, She Wrote) by Stephanie Kuehn, Rapture (Bioshock) by John Shirley, The Rise of Kiyoshi (Avatar, the Last Airbender) by F.C. Yee, and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/keepitfictional/message
The chess pieces are moving into position for the final act of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. We've also got some notable emotional beats as well as some political theater. Also of note, before we dive into the book discussion, we spend some time discussing the recent Yasuhiko-directed film Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island. Finally, we apologize for the sound quality in this episode. Due to a technical issue, Albert's audio is much softer than usual. Time stamps: General nonsense, banter, and spoiler-free Cucuruz Doan's Island discussion begin at the start. 31:40 - Cucuruz Doan's Island spoilers begin 56:35 - Our book discussion and commentary for The Origin volume 10 begins. Volume nine of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko features a couple of major first encounters between key characters, and at least one major revelation. We are now on volume 8 as we continue reading through Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko this year, one volume per month. This month's installment is contains two particularly special storyarcs. One of them is an intensely personal, tragic story about the effect that war has on regular people. The other is the kind of war comic that deals with big picture, chessboard of life stuff that will affect human society moving forward. There's a lot of rich, beautiful storytelling that is rife for thought-provoking discussion, and we invite you to join us. We provide summaries and personal commentaries of each chapter in the volume. If you've got any Gundam or mecha thoughts, feel free to hit us up! And don't forget to check out our previous episodes on The Origin to get all caught up! We also have a Linktree with just about all our relevant (and some irrelevant) links: https://linktr.ee/betweenthegutters
In this month's installment of our readthrough of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, we're covering more flashback material. This volume encompasses Operation British, the Battle of Loum, and the early portion of the One Year War. It's packed with action, spectacle, and emotionally resonant human drama. Most of all, it's also a masterpiece of political theater. Join us as we provide our usual chapter-by-chapter commentary, packed with varied and sundry references and historical tidbits! Also, please note that we'll be taking a bye week next week. Albert will be at San Diego Comic-Con. Find him at the Beefypoo booth!
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin volume 5 is a significant turning point in this epic saga. This volume, titled Char & Sayla, is Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's original material; these stories were not present in the First Gundam anime. There's a lot of political intrigue at play here as we witness the formation of the Principality of Zeon as well as the backstories of Char Aznable and Sayla Mass. It's a longer podcast episode than usual because this particular chapter deserves a close examination. In addition to some general thoughts on the volume as a whole, we also provide a chapter-by-chapter commentary. If you haven't been reading along with us, or if you've never read Gundam: The Origin, try your local library or a local bookseller or comic book store. Volume 5 also contains material that was adapted into the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin anime OVAs (also directed by Yas himself), so if you've watched those, a lot of what we discuss here will make sense. You can even watch the anime (in its recut, television broadcast form) on Crunchyroll. In 2022, our plan is to read through the entirety of Gundam: The Origin. Once a month, we will read and discuss one volume of this manga, the same way we did a full readthrough of Invincible last year.
Finally, White Base arrives at Jaburo, but at what cost? In this episode, we continue our exploration and analysis of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. We take examine volume four chapter by chapter and discuss the craftsmanship behind the storytelling, and we also talk about the character development and various plot developments. It's another exciting installment of this saga, and in this volume we really see the pain of youth who are forced to grow up fighting a war that their forebears caused. If you've been reading along with us, or if you're just a First Gundam/Universal Century fan, we'd love to hear your thoughts on this one!
It's time for our continuing readthrough of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. In volume 3, we meet Ramba Ral, one of First Gundam's more honorable antagonists. We also get some more layered character development, a look at the rest of the Zabi family, and at least one major plot twist that recontextualizes what we've experienced so far. Yas delivers incredibly exciting and thoughtful storytelling. There's also plenty of sweet, sweet mecha action. Hang out with us as we inspect the various story elements of this masterfully crafted manga!

It's a very busy week on the podcast, as we dive deep with both the Genshin Impact 2.5 update and Part VI of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, but before all that, Jonathan talks about his misadventures buying an OLED Nintendo Switch and trying to transfer content from his old Switch – it's ludicrously difficult! – and we cover several pieces of news including the debut trailer for Amazon's Lord of the Rings series, and Nintendo shuttering the 3DS and Wii U e-shops, ushering in a new golden age of video game piracy. Then we discuss the wonderful new content from this week's excellent Genshin update, including an outstanding new story quest for Raiden Shogun and a cool set of adventures in Enkanomiya, before jumping into our latest Gundam talk. The Origin OVA comes to a spectacular end with its sixth and final installment, “Rise of the Red Comet,” in which Zeon decimates the Earth Federation at the Battle of Loum, Char Aznable becomes a legend, and General Johann Ibrahim Revil delivers a speech that will change the course of human history. We're continuing our readthrough of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Things get even more interesting in volume 2 as we start to see even more world building and characterization. We really get to see how Gundam is a story that's about more than giant robots fighting. The human drama is compelling, and that's what makes the story pop. Join us as we discuss and dissect the various plot developments, characters, emotional content, and subtext.
This week brought the first Nintendo Direct presentation of 2022, and if it wasn't the most earth-shattering event ever, it sure brought a lot to love for fans of obscure JRPGs and/or sports games. We discuss all the news in depth, talk a little more Genshin Impact, and even spend a good 15 minutes gushing over the recent run of classic Doctor Who Blu-ray sets, before diving into Part V of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. “Clash at Loum” delivers not only the OVA's finest episode, but one of the single most memorable and powerful installments in the 40-year history of Gundam. Dramatizing Zeon's disastrous colony drop operation, Sayla Mass making a stand at Side 5, Ramba Ral and Crowley Hamon bemoaning the loss of a world that's passed them by, and Char Aznable taking the final, ultimate step towards becoming the legendary Red Comet, this episode is absolutely overflowing with pantheon-level sequences that are among the greatest Gundam has ever given us, all combining to paint a deeply affecting portrait of a world spun entirely out of control. This is as good as it gets.Time Chart:Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:04:47Stuff: 0:04:47 – 0:33:45Nintendo Direct: 0:33:45 – 1:19:02Gundam Origin V: 1:19:02 – 3:15:44Subscribe to our YouTube Channel!Subscribe to the WEEKLY SUIT GUNDAM Podcast!Subscribe for free to 'The Weekly Stuff' in Apple Podcasts!Follow Jonathan Lack on Twitter!Follow Sean Chapman on Twitter!
Eve of Destiny, Part IV of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, is a messier installment than others in this series, failing to find as clear or compelling a through-line as prior or upcoming episodes, and taking a weird jump in the middle that feels like a key piece of story is missing. That said, it's still a highly entertaining part of this terrific series, featuring the first meeting between Char and Lalah, a powerful ending scene with Amuro and Fraw Bow, and an absolutely dynamite centerpiece action sequence on the moon, where mobile suits go into combat for the first time in the history of the Universal Century. There's more than enough here to discuss and enjoy, even if it's all something of a stepping stone to some of The Origin's best material yet to come. This week saw another major acquisition in the world of gaming as Sony, makers of PlayStation, purchased Bungie – the original makers of Halo, Xbox's most iconic franchise – for a cool $3.6 billion. We discuss the implications of this deal for the future of PlayStation and Destiny, but that's not the only Halo-adjacent talk this week, as we also make fun of the awful new trailer for the Halo TV series and revisit the anemic, struggling Halo Infinite multiplayer a few months after release. Sean also review the Violet Evergarden movie now streaming on Netflix, and we gush some more over Genshin Impact before diving into our next Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin review. Part IV, Eve of Destiny, is a messier installment than others in this series, failing to find as clear or compelling a through-line as prior or upcoming episodes, even as it contains plenty of great moments including the first meeting between Char and Lalah, a powerful ending scene with Amuro and Fraw Bow, and an absolutely dynamite centerpiece action sequence on the moon. The big news in gaming this week – and probably all year, and maybe all decade – was news of Microsoft's intent to purchase Activision Blizzard King, one of the last major third party publishers standing in the West, for $69 billion, an astronomical and purely theoretical sum of money that makes us extremely depressed about the capitalist hellscape we all inhabit. After attempting to wrap our heads around that news, it's on to another adventure in the world of Gundam, as our journey through the past of the Universal Century continues with Part II of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. One of the most heart-wrenching installments in the series, Artesia's Sorrow is a fantastic hour with more than enough to make it worth the full podcast treatment, and we once again find countless things to talk about breaking it down. This year, we're going to be reading through the entirety of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. It's twelve hardcover volumes, so we'll be reading and discussing one volume a month, just as we did for Invincible last year. In this episode, we shed some basic information and historical context about First Gundam (the original 1979 anime TV series) and the Gundam franchise as a whole, and then discuss Activation, volume one of The Origin. We encourage you to buy yourself a copy, or borrow it from the library, and join us as we embark on this journey to Jaburo. Or if you're on the fence about it, hopefully our enjoyment and enthusiasm for the series will motivate you to at least think about giving this first volume a shot! MSG: The Origin is an ideal entry point into the world of Gundam, even if you know absolutely nothing about the franchise.
For our first Gundam discussion of the New Year, we're beginning our journey through Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, the 6-part theatrical OVA created between 2015 and 2018, based on Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's manga of the same name. And to give this great series the royal treatment it deserves, we're covering it one episode at a time! For this week, we're discussing Part I: Blue-Eyed Casval, where we return to Universal Century 0068 in the Republic of Munzo, where a young Casval Rem Deikun and his sister Artesia see the world thrown into chaos after the death of their father, the revolutionary leader Zeon Zum Deikun. It's a great debut episode for one of the best prequel stories ever told, but if you're not into Gundam, we've also got a half-hour of Stuff at the top of the podcast, with Sean telling us all about the first Kimetsu no Yaiba game, The Hinokami Chronicles, and Jonathan telling us about his fancy new computer! Enjoy! Forty-two years ago, Mobile Suit Gundam changed everything. Catch up on the entirety of the main timeline here. Part one details the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Mobile Suit Gundam, The 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket.
Welcome everyone to Animezingly Baka, the amazingly stupid podcast all about anime, where a couple of friends talk about anime, why they love it, and why anime is anything but stupid! So put a tie on your hen, strap in, and enjoy the weird ride that is Animezingly Baka! This final episode of Animezingly Baka (at least for now) is all about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, an anime about politics, backstabbing, murder, assassinations, and a wee bit of mecha; if any of those tickle your fancy, you should let The Origin tickle the shit out of you. Anyway, something-something thank you for going on this journey with us, we are forever grateful, don't be sus, cheers and enjoy the anime-zing(ly adios) show. Topics/Anime Discussed: Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin / Dragon Ball Z / Non Non Biyori Nonstop / The Disastrous Life of Saiki K / MLB the Show 21 / And More
We conclude our review of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. The Zabis prove they are the worst family but the best villains, Amuro and Fraw are home alone after school, and the Zaku II steals the show. Who will survive?
We kick off our review of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin by tackling the hard-hitting topics like what was that medieval knight doing at the castle? Does General Revil run like a penguin? Why were those Guncannons so embarrassing?
We made a mistake. The mistake was watching this movie. To correct this error, we tried something new: it's just gonna be you, us, and a 20 minute timer to talk about THE FLINTSTONES IN VIVA ROCK VEGAS. And then no more. Then we talk about Easter chocolate and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, mostly. Because why not, right? Fuck it, it's the same mentality the filmmakers had. The hosts try to break free from their strings by dismantling the absurd plot machinations and undercooked characters of the clownishly rushed horror action show Karakuri Circus. Continuing on our journey through all the interviews we took part of at Momocon 2019, here's the one with Keith Silverstein! Who is that you may ask? Well, he has done a lot! Many will know him as Torbjörn from Overwatch, or maybe Char Aznable from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Just all sorts of things! But he will forever hold a special place in our hearts around this parts, as Johnny Boya from mother flippin' REDLINE.

**Giant Robot Punch-Up in Space** Once upon a time there was a goose that laid golden eggs … China and the wider South-East Asian region has their own literal version of that famous goose in the form of The Monkey King, and there are numerous movies, TV shows, books, songs, comics, video games, manga and anime that have found inspiration in classic tales like Journey To The West. Now it’s the turn of director Stephen Chow to get in on the Monkey King action with his planned animated TV series that aims to open the the character up to a global audience. After that it’s time for the serious business of anime, so Mark girds his loins and ventures once more into his own personal giant robot hell with the first four episode movies of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Then it’s Andrew’s turn to show his mettle in the fight against evil as he tackles Season 2 Part 2 of My Hero Academia, and Producer Rob winds things up with some Aztec/Mayan/Incan-inspired fantasy action in Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers. Fanthropological is an anthropological (ish) podcast where we bring the fan's-eye view to you! Each week, we take a look at a different fandom, dig up interesting background, trivia, and history, and try to get to why it is that people are a fan. We also try to highlight good causes related to that fandom, and find interesting things that fans have created to share those to the world. Each episode is about an hour. Ish. Who is "The Nickscast"? We are the Nickscast! Three products of late-80s / early-90s pop culture who love exploring fandom and everything geek ... who also happen to have been best buddies since high school, and all happen to be named Nick. Yes, we are super creative (dare we say, the most creative). Ahem We are Nick Green, Nick Terwoord, and Nick Zacharewicz: We started the Nickscast as a labour of love, and as a place to entertain and to discuss our love of fans and fandom, and all that is shiny and interesting in that realm. It's what lead us to start our first podcast, our satellite podcasts, Fanthropological, and so much more. We want to help others learn more about different fandoms, and to create empathy with other fans: We dream of a world where other fans aren't "those Weird-o's", but just folks with different tastes. A world where fandom is full of discourse and analysis, and there are plenty of tools and resources to help. Fans building communities to do good in the world. Because everyone's a fan. Evan managed to convince David to watch Erased, so this episode the hosts sit down with freelance video producer Bill Zoeker (currently working at Crunchyroll) to talk about the popular anime series. Having an extra person on the show and having a series with so much to talk about resulted in us going WAY overtime, so this episode is almost two hours long! Topics include fish tails vs. fish heads on a mermaid/merman, the power of #branding in Shadow of Mordor, and whether the weird age differences in Erased are more or less OK than the one in Garden of Words. SPOILER ALERT: We spoil Erased late in the show, but we give a spoiler alert before it happens. We talked about two notable creators on Gundam: Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of Gundam and director of the original series; and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, character designer of the original series and manga artist of The Origin. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac. Triton of the Sea is available from Digital Manga Publishing. Evan mentioned Osamu Tezuka’s “Star System,” an explanation of which is available on Tezuka in English. The term “gekiga” refers to an alternative style of more hardboiled and/or down-to-earth manga popularized in the wake of Tezuka’s success in the 1950s and ’60s — notable artists include Yoshihiro Tatsumi and Takao Saito. Tezuka himself sought to copy the style once it started to gain traction, though Triton doesn’t exactly fall within the artist’s series of “dark,” more adult works. Erased is streaming on Crunchyroll, FUNimation, and Daisuki. Twitter: Ani-Gamers, Evan, David Evan hosts the Crunchycast podcast on Crunchyroll and writes for Otaku USA Magazine. From [Gunpla101.com's "the History of Gunpla"](https://www.gunpla101.com/the-history-of-gunpla/): > Mobile Suit Gundam, the first Gundam series ever, aired in 1979. > > Less than a year later, the first Gunpla kit appeared. And for the past 30 years, people of all ages have continued to enjoy this unusual hobby. > ... > - The word “Gunpla” was coined at the same time as the first kit. Like “cosplay,” it's a Japanese amalgamation of two English words—“Gundam” and “plastic,” as in “plastic model. English speakers will interchange this with “Gundam models,” but we usually say Gunpla because it's shorter. > - The first Gunpla, released in July 1980, cost just 300 yen, or about $3. Obviously, it was a kit for making the very first Mobile Suit Gundam model. > - The earliest Gunpla kits, released between 1980 and 1989, are nothing like the Gunpla we build today. Instead of snapping together, you had to glue them together with cement. Even trickier, they were all one color, and you'd need to paint them first! You'd get a rigid, hardly poseable model for your reward. Today these are called FG (First Grade) kits. > - The first High Grade was released in 1990 and cost 1000 yen, or about $10. As would become a tradition, the first model of any grade was the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Today High Grade is synonymous with “cheap and easy,” but in 1990 it was considered a more detailed, poseable grade of Gunpla. > - The first Master Grade was released in 1995 and cost 2500 yen, or about $25. It is the first time the original Mobile Suit Gundam was named correctly, as the RX-78-2. The grade was originally designed to be used for a select number of models to commemorate Gundam's 15th anniversary, but the popularity of these more accurate models is why they're still being manufactured to this day. > - The first Perfect Grade Gunpla appeared in 1998 and cost 12,000 yen or about $120. Today's Perfect Grades make this look cheap, often topping $200 or more. Perfect grades come in 1/60 scale and include so much detail that they can take weeks to build. They may even come with wiring for LEDs or other electronic features. > ... > - The first Real Grade showed up just recently, in 2010. It was designed to be a step up from High Grade in terms of realism, without being as complicated as a Master Grade. **Search Data:** Looking at some of the [Google Trends data since 2004](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F077wn1), Gunpla has gained some popularity, and is relatively stable in terms of search volume having grown by 50% since 2004. There appears to be some precipitating event around September 2013 where interest picked up quite a bit, possibly in relation to _[Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam:_The_Origin)_ being released in North America? It's unclear. [// Gundam build fighters - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun
