There's a row about a new Land Management Group for Dartmoor. There's been a lot of controversy about the state of the environment and grazing sheep there. The new group's been set up to bring together farmers, commoners and environmental groups to sort out the problems. The government's appointed Phil Stocker as the independent chair, but conservationists say he shouldn't have been given the job as he's also CEO of the National Sheep Association. We speak to Dartmoor Nature Alliance about their concerns. We ask Phil Stocker about his new role, and also about the state of sheep farming in the UK. Farmers in North Somerset say plans to create saltmarshes to offset the environmental impact of a new power station would be disastrous for their homes and livelihoods. Energy giant EDF is building a nuclear power plant - Hinkley Point C - on the Bristol Channel. To offset the number of fish that'll be killed when it's up and running, EDF is looking to create saltmarshes along the River Severn. It needs more than 800 acres and is considering the compulsory purchase of agricultural land.Presenter = Caz Graham Producer = Rebecca Rooney

This episode, we welcome to the podcast biographer Sarah LeFanu whose wonderful book Something of Themselves: Kipling, Kingsley, Conan Doyle and the Anglo-Boer War was released in 2020. About Sarah LeFanu Sarah lives near Bristol in North Somerset and is a biographer whose subjects include the English writer and traveller Rose Macaulay; Samora Machel, the liberation leader and first president of Mozambique; and Marjorie Blandy, one of the early women who qualified as a doctor and who went to France in 1914 with the Women's Hospital Corps. More recently, Sarah added Conan Doyle to her growing list of subjects when he featured as one of three writers in Sarah's group biography, Something of Themselves: Kipling, Kingsley, Conan Doyle and the Anglo-Boer War, which was published in 2020 and the following year shortlisted for the prestigious Elizabeth Longford Prize for historical biography. She has recently completed an account of her research and writing of that book, which will be published in October this year - Talking to the Dead: Travels of a Biographer. https://sarahlefanu.wordpress.com/ Something of Themselves: Kipling, Kingsley, Conan Doyle and the Anglo-Boer War (Hurst Publishing, 2020) In early 1900, the paths of three British writers—Rudyard Kipling, Mary Kingsley and Arthur Conan Doyle—crossed in South Africa, during what has become known as Britain's last imperial war. Each of the three had pressing personal reasons to leave England behind, but they were also motivated by notions of duty, service, patriotism and, in Kipling's case, jingoism. Sarah LeFanu compellingly opens an unexplored chapter of these writers' lives, at a turning point for Britain and its imperial ambitions. Was the South African War, as Kipling claimed, a dress rehearsal for the Armageddon of World War One? Or did it instead foreshadow the anti-colonial guerrilla wars of the later twentieth century? Weaving a rich and varied narrative, LeFanu charts the writers' paths in the theatre of war, and explores how this crucial period shaped their cultural legacies, their shifting reputations, and their influence on colonial policy. This week Jez Fredenburgh talks to two more farmers about their regenerative journey and how they have gradually developed more mixed farm businesses based around natural processes – family farmer George Ford from North Somerset and farm manager Jake Freestone from Gloucestershire. George has transitioned his family's intensive pig unit to a much more mixed business including a beef suckler herd, pasture-reared chickens, and soon-to-be pasture-reared Xmas turkeys. As manager of Overbury estates, Jake first started practicing min till over a decade ago, and has become well known for his work on soil health including long rotations, and companion cropping. He has more recently re-introduced livestock to the estate. They talk about what started their transition to more nature-based farming, how their businesses have changed as a result, and what they wished they'd known when they started. The chat also veers onto what Jake and George make of the current political climate in Westminster and what they'd like to see if PM Liz Truss ever had an epiphany about the need to support a transition to more agro-ecological farming practices.

If you look out to the horizon from the coast of South Wales or North Somerset, you see two bumps on the horizon - one tall and one flat. These are the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm - the former is English, the latter Welsh. Since 2018, Mat Brown has been the warden of Flat Holm - an island of just 500m across, mainly populated by gulls. He is responsible for the island's nature reserve, its buildings (which include a lighthouse, a foghorn cottage, a Victorian barracks and a ruined cholera hospital), its tiny museum and its tinier pub. With the help of a team of volunteers, he welcomes daytrippers and conservationists to the island and maintains the natural and built environment. After four years of island life, he's decided that it's time to return to the mainland. Who will take on this very unique job and how will they fare? Produced by Mair Bosworth for BBC Audio

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Lesley Waldron. She's an expert in perimenopause and staying active during these years of change. Sadly, I don't think there's enough awareness about perimenopause (I hadn't heard of it until I was already going through it), so I wanted to have this very important conversation on the show. This is a great episode to listen to whether you're in the middle of perimenopause or not quite there yet. It starts earlier than you may think, and it's important to know what to expect—so you can see the signs when they start to appear.   About Lesley Lesley Waldron is an integrative women's health coach, a personal trainer, running coach and writer. She started working in the world of fitness and well-being 7 years ago after a career in education and public policy and initially co-founded a children's fitness brand, Fit4tots, creating innovative fitness and sports classes to create confidence and positive association with sport and skills for sport in pre-schoolers and young children. Running had been a passion (but not necessarily a gift) since her 20s, and she also founded a women's running group, Wild Country Runners in 2014, to give women in the local community a chance to run in a group without worrying about competition. She runs a women's fitness business called Wild Country Woman, outdoors fitness classes that deliver what women need - strength training, time outside in beautiful spaces and the connection and community of being with a group of women of all ages. They support each other through all of life's ups and downs. As an Integrative Women's Health Coach, Lesley specialises in supporting people through the perimenopause transition in their forties and fifties. Empowering them with connection to their hormones and the changing impacts on their wellbeing, as well as with who they want to become in the next stage of their lives. She's inspired by the seasons and how the cycles of nature can help us understand our own cycles and transitions, whether we menstruate or not! She's written for Countryfile Magazine, Women and Home and has featured in the Guardian, BBC Radio Bristol and on podcasts. She's working on a book that blends perimenopause and seasonal wellbeing with a dose of outdoors medicine. She lives in a corner of North Somerset called the Wild Country, and lives with her husband and children in a house on the edge of the woods.  Website Instagram LinkedIn Free perimenopause download   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What is perimenopause and how it affects our adventures Things to be aware of when we're experiencing perimenopause How perimenopause changes our ability to have outdoor adventures How we need to adjust our adventures How to create a toolkit or menu of activities to create balance What happens after perimenopause   Things We Discussed Parasympathetic nervous system  Insight timer app  The Nap Ministry (Instagram account about rest)  Daring to Rest Vagus nerve  Steven Porges    Related Episodes 408 Holly Worton ~ Start Where You Are (now with downloadable transcript!) 406 Yvette Webster ~ How Outdoor Adventures Can Help with Mental Health (now with downloadable transcript!) 395 Holly Worton ~ How to Know When to Quit Your Adventures 390 Holly Worton ~ What to Do When You Don't Feel Like Having Adventures (now with downloadable transcript!)   Connect With Holly Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Pinterest Google+ LinkedIn   How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher   Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review! He explains that the changes the dairy market has witnessed over the past few decades have been considerable, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to make a living from their produce. However, by strengthening the market for organic dairy, he hopes to encourage more environmentally sustainable and financially viable farming methods, on a wider scale.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme exponential health ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interview Dr. Lorna Harries, Professor of Molecular Genetics at University of Exeter Medical School. Ira Pastor Comments Today as we continue our discussions on ideaXme pertaining to the biological hierarchy of life, we are going to journey into what I refer to as the "metabolic architecture of the cell", and all of the fascinating dynamics that surround our genomes and allow the information encoded within to impact the on-going physiological states of our health, disease, and aging processes. In doing so we will segue into a discussion around a category of biologic entities, broadly known as Ribonucleic acids (or RNA). RNA RNA is a polymeric molecule essential in various biological roles including coding, decoding, regulation and expression of genes. Cellular organisms use one of the primary forms of RNA, messenger RNA (mRNA) to convey genetic information from our DNA to direct synthesis of specific proteins integral in appropriate gene expression across our cell lineages. RNA silencing or "RNA interference" (RNAi) is the process by which protein production from a gene is turned off. The term "RNA therapeutics" means either the use of one of the other forms of regulatory RNAs (e.g., siRNAs, microRNA) directly as a therapeutic agent and/or the modulation of RNA-based processes with more traditional drugs (e.g. small molecules). Because RNA is central to all biological processes, there are numerous potential avenues for addressing human disorders at the RNA level including many chronic degenerative diseases, infections, and even aging processes themselves. Our guest today, who is an expert in this unique domain of biology and is going to take us further into the topic, is Professor Lorna Harries, Professor of Molecular Genetics, University of Exeter Medical School. Dr. Lorna Harries Dr. Harries has a PhD in Molecular Genetics from University College London, and set up the "RNA-Mediated Mechanisms of Disease Group" at the University of Exeter Medical School in 2006. Her team has a special focus on how RNA biology can influence both normal and disease states, from large-scale "omics" approaches, down to detailed assessment of specific mechanisms in specific genes. Dr. Harries leads the group's investigation into how and why we age, and the reason age is a major risk factor in diseases like Type-2 Diabetes. Her goal is to use the information the group uncovers to develop a new generation of anti-degenerative drugs. As many age-related diseases have common roots, causes and mechanisms, which arise from the failure of a few basic health-maintenance mechanisms that decline in efficiency as we age, the Harries lab feels by focusing and by targeting them, they will eventually be able to target multiple age-related diseases at once. Dr. Harries has written over 90 peer-reviewed articles and was awarded the Diabetes UK RD Lawrence Prize Lectureship in 2011. She is coordinator of the annual UEMS "Men in White" school outreach with Dr. John Chilton, an event that brings in year 9 students from schools stretching from South Devon to North Somerset and gives them hands-on experience of work in a research laboratory. Dr. Harries is also is a STEMnet ambassador as well as an Exeter Catalyst Champion for Public Engagement. On this show we will hear from Dr. Harries: About her background, how she became interested in science, molecular biology, and how she finds herself at the forefront of RNA biology and therapeutics. The history of RNA therapeutics and why according to her recent Nature article "It's Time for Scientists to Shout About RNA Therapies." An overview of RNA splicing, the spliceosome, splicing factors, and their respective roles in human ageing. Her work in RNA regulation of human cellular senescence. Her work in RNA regulation of Type-2 Diabetes. Her future visions for her work. Clare Balding walks with Carolyn Savidge in the final programme of this series which has been themed Artists' Ways. In the first programme she walked with an artist who created outdoor artworks to help her to come to terms with never having had children. In this final programme, Carolyn explains how walking and art have helped her deal with the loss of her husband. Carolyn's walk leaves from her front door in the village of Bleadon in North Somerset, and takes her out onto the hills and levels of north Somerset. On the way she describes the written, photographic and sound based project she has created since losing her husband to cancer. It's a moving walk, but also very uplifting as Carolyn describes how embracing the landscape has helped her begin to move forward with her life. Producer: Karen Gregor.
