The Art of Longevity

There are always some central pillars to a great party playlist - songs that just work. One of those is the Joan As Police Woman song Holy City. The song is always an instant hit at parties, guaranteed to elicit excitable inquiries as to “who is this?”. That instant reaction. The song is a #1 hit in my family - one of those multi-generational family life tracks. But if Holy City is instantly likeable, with a great beat and a strong poppy hook, it's somewhat uncharacteristic of Joan's music, which is mostly the opposite: seductive slow burns that take their time to become loved. It's what Joan herself refers to as the eternal quandary of a life making alternative and original songs in today's music business. “A lot of people are just really busy and they don't have time to figure out what this incredible new music is that might require 10 listens until you're hooked”. Then again, after some time away from Joan's music, it was another of her singles that I was immediately drawn to, the smouldering, unhurried jazzy ballad Full Time Heist, from her new album Lemons, Limes and Orchids. This song, written as a cynical ode to one of life's chancers, is my song of 2024 and enters into the canon of my all time favourite songs. That's two for Joan and makes her increasingly one of my very favourite artists. Joan is the ultimate collaborator - entirely comfortable with creating in the moment no matter who she works with - and some of her collaborators have been bona fide music royalty, including Tony Allen, Rufus Wainwright and Damon Albarn (and also David Sylvian although their recording sessions have yet to see the light of day - something I only discovered after my chat with Joan). But an effective collaborator as she is, Joan makes her own records, literally. Right from the start her 2007 debut Real Life was entirely self-funded, subsequently shopped around to labels that would be willing to take it to market. She had a little bit of help for her first E.P. from - of all places an independent record shop in Derby, England. Indeed, store owner Tom Rose of Reveal Records created his own label just to get Joan's first songs on the market. Tom happens to be Joan's manager to this day. Going back through the catalogue, it is striking just how high the quality of Joan's solo output is, most notably her stunning Sophomore record To Survive (2008), the ultra-cool collaboration with Tony Allen and Dave Okumu The Solution Is Restless (released during the pandemic in 2021). And now Lemons, Limes and Orchids - yet another creative high water mark for an artist whose songs have a classic, timeless quality. The obvious question is how does such an uncompromising, singula artist even survive in today's content-flooded music business?“I practice daily to avoid the whole ‘compare and despair'. Keep the focus on myself and make the best music I possibly can and then I'm a happy person”. If she is happy, we should be too - and lucky to have her making such wonderful music.  Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Worse still is that in a recent phone call between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden warned Netanyahu that there would be grave consequences should he send forces into Rafah to destroy Hamas. Today's guest is one that will warm your heart. He warmed ours and was truly the spark in our lives that we needed. Our guest is Tom Rose. Tom Rose is an author, public speaker, advocate, and cook. Tom and his wife Joyce coauthored two cookbooks, "Cooking Together Chinese Style" and "Cooking Together Quick and Easy". They also hosted a cooking segment on their local Fox TV affiliate for 13 years. When his wife Joyce passed away from Breast Cancer in August of 2019, Tom began writing the story of his grief journey. That story became his most recent book, “Balloon in a Box” - a book for anyone who is grieving. It is not only a beautiful book about love but also a book following Tom through his journey of grief as he and others share their memories, good and bad. His book will help you learn how to control the “balloon in your box” and move forward in life with your loved ones, not without them. We chat with Tom Rose about: The writing process of his grief and how it began. Three needs of the griever: find the words, say the words aloud, and know the words have been heard. The gap in resources when it comes to grief- many are too clinical and not enough emotional. Loss is loss. How many people say the wrong things when addressing someone experiencing grief? What should you say? The journey of grief, and how Tom handled the ups and downs. Pragma love and its relation to the grief process. Tom's experiences speaking to groups about loss, and how he has become an expert on a topic he may not have wanted to become an expert on. Tom answers our fast-five questions, and the most important question, "What does a life well lived mean to you?" It's quite incredible how quickly our teens adapt to their environment. And it never ceases to amaze me how quickly they can cotton on to a great excuse – sorry, my laptop is glitching. I'm not sure that's much of a technical term, but it seems to cover all manner of ills to justify not putting the camera or mic on. But beneath the cunning is there a more serious issue? Is it a symptom of the fact that our children are disengaging from learning? And will this perhaps more passive role harm their prospects in the future? This week's episode is looking at remote learning and how our young people can get the most out of schooling at home. Nathan McGurl, founder of The Study Buddy is joined by Tom Rose. Tom is currently the Programme Director at Oak National Academy. The National Academy is an initiative set up by teachers to provide high quality pre-recorded video lessons for pupils Early Years to Yr 11. Before joining Oak, Tom worked in teacher training and development with Teach First, and Curriculum development with the multi-academy Trust Ark schools.  The episode looks at the issues involved in remote learning and how it has evolved since the first lockdown. We discuss the role of teachers and also what parents can do to support. We also consider the broader impact of creative subjects and the need for a balanced schedule.
