Open Seas is a Scottish charity that focusses on protecting our marine environment and the things that live in it. A few weeks ago, Mark joined them in Skye where they were carrying out seabed surveys. While the weather didn't play ball and they didn't get out on their planned boat trip, the team did manage to show him the kind of footage they record and why it's important in influencing the kinds of protection marine areas can get.Rachel is in Pitlochry where the Firebrand Theatre Company along with the Festival Theatre are staging a play all about naturalist and poet Nan Shepherd: Naked and Unashamed. She hears about how the play came together and the extraordinary legacy of Nan.Wigtown is now well known across Scotland and the wider literary world as Scotland's Book Town. It's a title it has held since 1998 and since the first festival in 1999, the town has seen its prospects transformed. Mark met up with Anne Barclay from the festival company to hear about the positive changes in the town over the past 25 years.Rachel heads out on a coastal foraging walk as part of the 2024 Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival which kicks off this weekend. Forager Daniel shows her some of the things that can be found along the coastline from plants to seaweeds, foods and medicine.By the time Out of Doors is broadcast, Scotland will have played Germany in the opening match of Euro 2024. For the past few days Scotland fans have been arriving in Munich and the town is covered in tartan and saltires. But what is the origin of the white cross on a blue background? Mark visits the Scottish Flag Trust at Athelstaneford in East Lothian to find out more. The story of modern whaling in the Southern Hemisphere is a controversial one. Many British companies played a key role in the industry, and they had a largely Scottish workforce. A project is underway to collect the memories of those who worked in the industry and their families before it's too late. We chat live to Helen Balfour from the Whalers' Memory Bank to find out more about the project.A couple of weeks ago the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world, The Waverley, made its first ever visit to Ullapool. Our news colleague in Inverness Stephen Macleod went along to experience the excitement. In this week's Scotland Outdoors podcast, Rachel speaks to Artist in Residence at the Rahoy Nature Reserve, Liz Myhill. Her role is to raise awareness of the huge reserve and encourage people to visit and explore. We hear an excerpt.More than 130 years ago two men began a years' long adventure to discover, climb and map Skye's famous Black Cuillin. Professor Norman Collie was a scientist and John Mackenzie was a local mountain guide. The unlikely pair are considered among the greatest pioneering mountaineers of their time and in 2020 after several years of fundraising, a statue was erected in their memory. Mark went to visit it in Sligachan and hear Collie and Mackenzie's story.

Links:Livestreams by @k19.tv: Tag 1: www.youtube.com/live/NSkjU9zVnhA?feature=shareTag 2: www.youtube.com/live/jU6rEFodRD8?feature=shareHighlights: youtu.be/Cp912F68Vh8

So far on Why Food?, we've talked to many food entrepreneurs about taking the leap from their former careers into food and beverage -- but what if you’ve already launched a successful, growing food business when another steals your heart? In this episode, Big Mozz founder Matt Gallira tells us about when (and why) he decided to pivot from his tomato sauce business, Atlantic Ave Company, to focus on taking his hand-stretched mozzarella and deep-fried mozzarella stick tent at Smorgasburg into the big leagues of outdoor festivals. Big Mozz’s Executive Chef, Jimmy Warren, also joins us in the studio with tales of how he went from majoring in finance to cooking for multiple sorority houses to Del Posto and finally as the first hire for the Big Mozz team. Please join us as we discuss the balance of creativity and scale, good questions to ask a founding partner and how Big Mozz is taking festival fare to the next level. “We want to actually connect the people in a different way than usual.” – Iva Bencun “We strongly believe that we can do this festival and that we must do it in order to expand that kind of love that we feel for Zadar.” – Martina Ljustina Today's guests on the Art of Adventure podcast are two adventure savvy entrepreneurs who has devoted their time and effort in order to provide fun and thrill for other people. Iva Bencun and Martina Ljustina are two of the co-founders of the Zadar Outdoor Festival. This festival showcases the extraordinary geographic diversity of the Zadar region which is perfect for outdoor activities. It also allows the participants to enjoy various sports while challenging their own limits. The first person I met when I moved to Zadar was Martina, and she has been a great friend, helping me with many connections and ideas while I've been here. Martina introduced me to Iva, who has also been a great friend and help during our stay in Croatia. I got to participate in many of the events of the 2017 Zadar Outdoor festival - caving, mountain bike racing, yoga, dancing, whitewater rafting, watching the air show, the highline slackline, and kayak race. There was one peak moment that blew me away -when the bike race finished and the kayak race was starting and the planes were flying overhead while the slackliners were high in the air above the forum- it seemed like everything was happening all at once and it felt like the center of the universe. Successfully organizing the festival in April 2017, the team invites more participants to join on the next Zadar Outdoor Festival. The land and the waters of Zadar region will be the space for people who wish to have the ultimate adventure. What you will learn on this episode: What are the activities in the Zadar Outdoor Festival Making this festival happen Where the idea of the festival came from Building the team What is their promotion strategy Tips in organizing a festival How much does this festival cost Inspiration behind the festival Continue the Adventure (Resources from this episode): Zadar Outdoor Festival on Instagram on Facebook on Twitter Iva Bencun: on Instagram on Facebook on Twitter   Martina Ljustina: on Instagram on Facebook on Twitter You might also like these episodes: Caroline Weiler | The Power Of Storytelling AOA 134 | Garrison Cohen | Creative Events (AKA the Art of Eventure) AOA 148 | Travis Sheridan | Create an Environment for Success

Striking out on your own means a whole lot of hustling. We interview Sarah Knapp, the founder of OutdoorFest and Mappy Hour about how she got started, how she finds time, and how she's learning to appreciate an accomplishment before moving onto her next goal. After graduating from NYU, Sarah applied to work at a ski resort in Alta, Utah. She wanted to immerse herself in the 'ski bum' lifestyle and surround herself with people who were as into skiing as herself. Sarah found herself at home in the outdoor community, and brought the drive to share that feeling with others back to New York. Learn about how Sarah started OutdoorFest, a 10 day outdoor adventure festival in New York City and Mappy Hour, a growing happy hour for urban outdoorists. The opening story in this podcast was contributed by Sara Aranda, founder of Bivy Tales. Special thanks to Sara for her openness and vulnerability in sharing her experiences with anxiety.
