Send us a textThe systematic abduction and militarization of Ukrainian children by Russian forces represents one of the most devastating yet underreported aspects of the ongoing war. In this eye-opening conversation, Ukrainian historian and religious scholar Vladislav Haverlov reveals the shocking scope and calculated nature of Russia's deportation campaign targeting Ukrainian youth. His research with the Institute of World History at Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences and his work documenting war crimes with multiple humanitarian organizations exposes the brutal reality behind Russia's euphemistically labeled "evacuations." Since February 2022, Russian authorities have forcibly transferred thousands of Ukrainian children from occupied territories to Russia, with official counts identifying 19,546 deported children. Most alarmingly, only 1,366 have been successfully returned after three years of war.Children are taken by bus or train, processed through filtration camps & dispersed across a network of "temporary accommodation centers" throughout Russia. Many are deliberately sent to remote regions like Siberia. In these facilities, Ukrainian children undergo systematic indoctrination, losing their documents, language, and cultural identity. They are funneled into paramilitary organizations like "Young Army" where children as young as eight receive military training. Looking back to move forward
Send us a textEver wondered what life is really like for families living on the edge of extreme poverty? Most of us have only seen poverty through statistics or images, but a new immersive experience called "Rooted in Reality" is changing how we understand this complex reality. When a team of college students traveled to Sierra Leone to develop this groundbreaking poverty simulation, they discovered something profound. People experiencing poverty don't define their situation primarily by their lack of material resources – they define it by feelings of powerlessness, inferiority, and hopelessness. "We feel like garbage that other people throw out," one person shared during a World Bank study. "We don't matter to the world and it is our destiny to be poor."This mindset revelation transformed the team's approach. Rather than creating a simulation focused solely on material deprivation, they crafted an experience that plunges participants into the emotional reality of poverty – the impossible choices, the systemic barriers, and the cumulative stress of living without safety nets. During beta testing, participants emerged feeling "incredibly stressed" and "very anxious," gaining valuable insight into the psychological toll of poverty. What makes Rooted in Reality uniquely powerful is its authenticity. Every scenario is based on real stories gathered from families in Bo and Freetown, Sierra Leone. The team worked closely with case managers at the Child Reintegration Center and staff at Mercy Hospital to ensu________Travel on International Mission, meet local leadership and work alongside them. Send us a textPrincess was just six years old when someone finally spoke up about the abuse she was suffering. That brave act by a Child Reintegration Center alumnus became the first link in a chain of compassionate interventions that would transform her life.Reverend Olivia Fonney, Director of the Child Reintegration Center in Sierra Leone, takes us through Princess's journey from trauma to healing. When Princess first arrived at the CRC, she was understandably confused and frightened. Rather than place her in the dormitory setting of their interim care facility, Reverend Olivia made the compassionate decision to take Princess into her personal quarters - recognizing that institutional care, however well-intentioned, cannot replicate the warmth of a family environment.Despite their best efforts to prepare Princess's biological parents for reunification, initial attempts failed when they couldn't keep her safe from her abuser. This setback led to placement with a foster parent - a nurse who provided Princess with stability, nurturing, and specialized care for her emotional needs. This therapeutic environment became the foundation for Princess's remarkable transformation.Today, Princess is thriving. She's confident, expressive, and truly connected to her family after successfully reunifying with her prepared biological parents. She attends school regularly, has developed a love for reading, and dreams of becoming a teacher. As Reverend Olivia powerfully states, "No child is ever too lost or too broken to find her way back to love and stability."Princess's story reminds us of the critical importance of speaking up when we see abuse, the power of trauma-informed care, and how communities working together can change a child's life trajectory. Send us a textThe global movement to transition children from orphanages to families is gaining momentum, but significant challenges remain. In this thought-provoking episode, David Titus Moussa hosts a conversation with Stephen Usembe, a care leaver and founder of Kenya Society of Care Leavers, and Phil Aspergren, executive director of Casa Viva in Costa Rica, as they unpack key insights from the recent Rising Tide Conference.Stephen shares his unique perspective as someone who grew up in institutional care, emphasizing the critical need for research and data to drive meaningful policy change. "When we know better, we have a responsibility to do better," he reminds us, highlighting how institutions isolate while families embrace. The experts discuss how poverty, misguided funding models, and entrenched attitudes continue to separate vulnerable children from families that could care for them with proper support.Phil recounts a powerful story of transformation: when 26 adolescents in a well-run children's home were asked what they wanted most, every single one answered, "I want to live in a family." This led to a complete transition from institutional care to family placements for all 26 youth—proving that change is possible even in challenging circumstances. He challenges listeners who support orphanages not to withdraw funding, but instead to use their influence to ask important questions and encourage transition toward family-based solutions. The conversation explores practical strategies for redire________Travel on International Mission, meet local leadership and work alongside them. Send us a textChild welfare is undergoing a profound transformation worldwide as organizations shift away from institutional orphanages toward family-based care models. But what does this transition actually look like on the ground? How can we redirect well-intentioned support toward solutions that truly serve children's needs? This eye-opening conversation brings together true pioneers in the global care reform movement. Stephen Ucembe draws from his lived experience growing up in a Kenyan orphanage to advocate for family care through Hope and Homes for Children and Transform Alliance Africa. Phil Aspegren shares his remarkable journey from orphanage founder to family care champion as Executive Director of Casa Viva, supporting transitions across Latin America. Together with host David Titus Musa of Sierra Leone, they unpack myths about orphanages that perpetuate family separation. The statistics are sobering: for every three months in an institution, a child loses approximately one month of development. Yet there's tremendous hope in the successful transitions happening worldwide. We hear about a Honduran children's home that reunified all 40 children with families, then redirected their resources to support 125 vulnerable families in the community, preventing separations before they happen.Whether you're a donor, volunteer, or simply care about vulnerable children, this conversation presents a compelling vision for reform.

Austria's far-right Freedom Party has secured a historic political victory following the recent election. The party finished first with 29.2 percent of the vote, beating out the OVP's 26.2 percent, and the centre-left Social Democrats' 20.4 percent. UK correspondent Gavin Grey says it doesn't have the support to form a majority Government - and the other parties are apprehensive about forming a coalition.

Beklenti yüzde 70'in üzerini gösteriyor. Baz etkisi olmayacak. Geçen yıl, son üç ayında enflasyon %3,54, 2.88 ve 1,18 gelmişti. “Bedava gaz” etkisi kalkıyor. Elektrik zamları geldi. Petrol fiyatları yüksek seyrediyor. Gıda fiyatlarında da hızlı yükselişler beklemek gerekiyor. Antalya Ticaret Borsası verilerine göre meyve miktar endeksi yıllık % 67.33 azalırken fiyat endeksi %199.33 artış göstermiş."

This week's EYE ON NPI is enjoying the beautiful weather with you, whether sitting in the sun or lounging in the shade - all's good because we've got Nexperia's NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC with embedded solar MPPT capability! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/neh2000by-energy-harvesting-power-management-ic) This tiny, low-cost chip is a one-stop solution for extending the life of your product by making it powered by small solar cells. This chip is perfect for wearables or miniature sensor nodes, maybe with a LoRa radio, WiFi or Bluetooth Low Energy where space and pricing is important. For example, an asset tracker, traffic monitor, activity watch, or agricultural sensor network: stuff that is outside anyways so it'll be designed for outdoor use and have lots of sun exposure. We've covered other MPPT tracking solar harvesting chips (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/04/23/eye-on-npi-max20361-tiny-single-multi-cell-solar-harvester-maximintegrated/), and the NEH2000BY has some advantages in size, cost and simplicity. Either use it to increase the time between charges, or use it to have your product be fully encased with no need for charging at all, thanks to the power of the SUN (https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/solar-system/sun/galleries/?page=0&per_page=25&order=created_at+desc&search=&href_query_params=category%3Dsolar-system_sun&button_class=big_more_button&tags=sun&condition_1=1%3Ais_in_resource_list&category=51) The Nexperia NEH2000BY energy harvester (https://www.digikey.com/short/hpnfttw3) is designed specifically for use with solar cells because cells collapse under high current draw - which is what batteries want when they are charging up so that they can be ready to go ASAP! When drawing current from a solar cell, at the very beginning the voltage is very high, then is slowly drops down as more is drawn until the input voltage collapses completely. So you have to be very careful when drawing current - too little and you lose out on efficiency, too much and your power goes away completely. There's a 'sweet spot' right in the middle, where you can get the most power output, which is called the Max Power Point. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_power_point_tracking) And this point varies with how much sunlight you get - so it isn't something you can pre-program in with a comparator or anything. Instead, the energy harvester has to wiggle the power draw forward and back to find the maximum point. For large-scale solar installations, you'd have a microcontroller do the math for you, and adjust throughout the day - it isn't hard to do MPPT it just takes measurement and computation. But in small and low-current situations, you can't spend all your power budget on a microcontroller to manage your battery charger. First up, almost no extra components are needed: just a stabilization capacitor plus a capacitor for the switched-cap boosting doubler. Note that there's no inductor because it seems to use a switched-cap boosting method for approximately 2x voltage output - so you will need to spec a panel that, when the MPPT voltage is approximately doubled, you'll have about 0.3V above the battery voltage. There's some math in the datasheet to work this out but basically in the end, use a panel with an open-circuit voltage - Voc - that is about 0.7 times the battery voltage. So, e.g. if you're using a Lipoly (https://www.digikey.com/short/h02tmj1q), with a VBat of 4.2V, use a 3V solar panel - which is very common and inexpensive. For NiMH cells, add up the total series voltage before multiplying by 0.7 for the Voc desired. To keep your battery from over-charging, either use a separate battery charger chip that will do the constant-current to voltage-limited charging, or use a low cost over-voltage protection (OVP) chip as recommended in the datasheet. If you'd like to integrate the Nexperia NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/hpnfttw3) into your next solar-powered product, thank your lucky stars because DigiKey has the NEH2000BY in stock right now at a great price for immediate shipment. With the long summer days ahead, you can order today and be max-power-point'ing before the sun sets tomorrow.

John spends significant portions of this episode unsuccessfully goading Conrad Zbikowski, Ward 3 candidate for Minneapolis City Council, into attacking his opponent, incumbent Michael Rainville. We talk about public safety failures, Conrad's unapologetically pro-housing agenda, rent control, homeless encampment response, zoning for complete neighborhoods where everyone has a grocery store, Conrad's campaign strategy (bring in new people or focus on reliable caucus-goers?), and much more. Most importantly, here are John's preferred lines of attack on Michael Rainville: Michael Rainville spent the 1990s building his credentials as a neighborhood leader by tossing the possessions of homeless people into the Mississippi River (as reported in the Star Tribune). After a particularly chaotic and violent July 4 in 2022, Council Member Rainville told a white audience he was going to a Mosque to scold Somali elders about the behavior of their children, without regard for the fact he had no idea whether any of their children were actually involved. He bragged to the same audience about his February vote against funding the Office of Violence Prevention. While emphasizing the need to hold OVP accountable, Rainville has repeatedly cast doubt on the findings of the Minnesota Department of Human rights regarding MPD's racist and abusive policing practices. While serving as the City Council representative to the Minneapolis Planning Commission in 2022, Rainville delayed approval of a Hennepin County affordable housing project and raised crime as a reason to oppose it. Rainville has been described by David Brauer as a "sentient Minneapolis Police Federation door decal." (barely sentient?) Gun violence is increasing in Mecklenburg County, and according to county data, homicides doubled in a five-year span. A comprehensive plan has been unveiled by the Office of Violence Prevention in an attempt to address some of the violence. The data gathered by the office shows that there were 64 homicides in Mecklenburg County in 2015 and 126 in 2020. Gun-related assaults also doubled during the same time period. In today's episode: how cataloguing old vines in South Africa has raised standards for fair employment, and sustainable farming and may just prove the key to solving the problem of the country's most prevalent vine virus. We continue investigating the topic of old vines, this time from a different perspective, as we look to the Certified Heritage Vineyards of South Africa. We hope you've built up an appetite for the subject after last week's head-turning conversation with the South Australian duo of Dr. Dylan Griggs, the man who wrote the Ph.D. thesis on old vines after an extensive study of the old vines of the Barossa Valley, and Prue Henschke, viticulturist for the renowned Henschke winery, that produces two of the oldest single vineyard wines in Australia today. We know that the term “old vines” helps to sell wine. Trade and well-informed consumers, tend to believe that old vines = better wine. But is that really true? Listen to last week's episode to find out more about that topic but, spoiler alert, a more accurate expression would be “old vines make different wines”. The Thieves have come to think that those differences are worth preserving and protecting and thus will be discussing a movement in South Africa whose core mission is to do just that - preserve and protect old vines. Winery members of what is known as the “Old Vine Project” can now put a Certified Heritage Vineyards seal on bottles - the threshold for old is 35 years, which is not quite as arbitrary a number as you might think and the seal includes the date of the original planting of each of these old vineyards – a guarantee of authenticity. Our guests on the program include former lawyer-turned-viticulturist Rosa Kruger who is the founder of the small, privately funded group of crusaders known as “The Old Vines Project”. Kruger is the great-great-granddaughter of Paul Kruger, President of South Africa from 1883-1900, and the one for whom the famous Kruger national park is named. During her travels and tastings around the wine world, Kruger arrived at the realization that old vines not only had advantages on a viticultural level, but also produced better, or at least distinctively, wine. Rosa's colleague and counterpart at the OVP, Andre Morgenthal, joins the round table. André has lectured at the Cape Wine Academy and has worked several vintages at Domaine Bertagna in Vougeot, Burgundy and made wine on a small Stellenbosch property, Clos du Ciel. In 2001, he joined Wines of South Africa (WOSA) as Communications Manager with a focus on media relations but in 2016 he resigned from WOSA to start his own business, among other ventures assisting Rosa Kruger with the Old Vine Project (OVP). Also joining the conversation is Andrew Harris of DGB, one of the largest South African producers and distributors of wine and spirits. DGB has developed and built some of the most successful wine brands in South Africa, including Boschendal, Franschhoek Cellars and Bellingham, as well as new projects through Artisanal Brands such as The Old Road Wine Co. and Fryer's Cove, which DGB acquired last year. DGB is an important member of the Old Vine Project and manages more old vineyards than any other group in SA.Find yourself a glass of old vines chenin blanc and join the conversation!
