Today, we take it for granted that you can buy a home pregnancy test at the pharmacy. Before the end of the 1970s, this was not the case. Then along came Margaret Crane, a young designer working for a pharmaceutical company. Looking at the rows of pregnancy tests in the lab one day in 1965, she thought, “Well, women could do that at home!” But Crane faced an uphill battle to convince the pharmaceutical companies, the medical community, and conservative social leaders that at-home pregnancy testing was safe and necessary. This podcast first aired in 2014, when Margaret Crane's role in the development of the home pregnancy test was eventually recognized. Almost 10 years later, Crane's experience remains relevant as women continue to fight for their reproductive rights. Making Contact is a radio show and podcast from Frequencies of Change Media. Dr. Pamela Harrison OAM, will take us back to a time when medical innovation was hands-on, resourceful, and sometimes a little peculiar.
In 1965 Margaret Crane was a young designer creating packaging for a pharmaceutical company. Looking at the rows of pregnancy tests she thought, “Well, women could do that at home!” and so she made it a reality for potentially pregnant people to be able to know about and take control of their own lives and bodies. But while the design of the prototype was simple, Crane faced the issues we continue to fight when it comes to reproductive rights and the health and autonomy of people who give birth: an uphill battle to convince the pharmaceutical companies, the medical community and conservative social leaders that at-home pregnancy testing was safe and necessary. After all this, Crane is only now receiving credit for her contributions to the industry. Is your pregnancy test negative, again? Let's get real. It sucks when we do everything we can in our power to make something happen, and it just doesn't. If you've ever wanted to get pregnant, and have seen a negative result on the test, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter if it's one month of trying or 2 years…. “Trying to get pregnant” can be painful, and the phrase itself is defeatist. The mindset it establishes is one based on fear vs. love. I like to lead from a place of love, and encourage my patients to think positively. For that reason, I advocate for replacing it with, “preparing for pregnancy.” Doesn't it just sound more peaceful, and open to the process? I think so. Regardless if you are on board with my line of thinking, I do want to share some helpful tips and suggestions so that your path to pregnancy is as informed and efficient as possible. Here are my top tips: My #1 tip for preparing for pregnancy is to NOT put blind faith in fertility apps. Tip #2: Develop a resilient, and positive mindset. Tip #3: Make use of science (diagnostic testing) to understand what could be preventing you from getting pregnant. Oh, and ask questions. Lots of them! Tip #4: Talk to your doctor about things you can do that are in your control like lifestyle and diet. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website. In this episode of Derms and Conditions, host James Q. Del Rosso, DO, welcomes Mona Shahriari, MD, associate director of clinical trials at Central CT Dermatology and assistant clinical professor at Yale University, to discuss the challenges of treating pregnant and breastfeeding patients, particularly those with atopic dermatitis (AD). The conversation addresses a crucial yet often unclear topic for dermatologists: balancing safety and efficacy when managing AD in patients during pregnancy and lactation. Dr Shahriari emphasizes the importance of addressing uncontrolled inflammation, which can have potential consequences for both the mother and baby, such as premature birth and maternal sleep disruption. She shares insights into the physiological changes during pregnancy, including the shift from a Th1 to a Th2 immune state, and how this can impact conditions like AD and psoriasis. The discussion highlights the limited data available for systemic treatments in this population, as pregnant women are excluded from clinical trials. Despite this, therapies like dupilumab and cyclosporine are discussed for their safety profiles, with dupilumab often considered when patients need effective control with minimal risk. Dr Shahriari also addresses strategies to involve partners in treatment decisions, ensuring patients feel supported and informed. Drs Del Rosso and Shahriari emphasize the importance of open communication with patients, managing risk tolerance, and understanding the nuances of systemic treatment in pregnancy and lactation. Dr Shahriari shares real-world cases, including the use of dupilumab in a pregnant patient with severe AD and counseling a patient with psoriasis who unintentionally administered a biologic injection during the first trimester. Tune in to the full episode for practical guidance on navigating these complex cases and balancing patient care with available evidence. This episode is a must-listen for dermatologists managing pregnant or breastfeeding patients with inflammatory skin conditions.

Latest Beef Industry News European Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban The European Commission criticized Hungary's proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market. “No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU's scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved. The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments. Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill. Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections. NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA's Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides. Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA's Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS. Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey's Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas's Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. Selected from over 2,400 nominations across 410+ burgers, the contest's top ten burgers — two from each of the state's five regions — were judged on taste, appearance, cooking, and overall impression by an anonymous panel. The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. The Arkansas Beef Council continues to support beef's image and Arkansas's cattle industry through promotional and research efforts. Object Lessons is a series of concise, collectable, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Each book starts from a specific inspiration: an historical event, a literary passage, a personal narrative, a technological innovation—and from that starting point explores the object of the title, gleaning a singular lesson or multiple lessons along the way. This interview discusses the series with one of the two editors of the series, Dr. Christopher Schaberg. Featuring contributions from writers, artists, scholars, journalists, and others, the emphasis throughout is lucid writing, imagination, and brevity. Object Lessons paints a picture of the world around us, and tells the story of how we got here, one object at a time. Many Object Lessons books have been interviewed on the New Books Network to date, including: Trench Coat, Mushroom, Ok, Grave, Wine, Magazine, Stroller, Barcode, Recipe, Hyphen, Pregnancy Test, Gitter, Relic, Pencil, Air Conditioning, and Swimming Pool. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Learn more about the story and find the transcript on radioproject.org.
