Welcome to another insightful episode of the Ecology Academy podcast, hosted by Richard Dodd. Join us as we delve into the world of ecology with special guest Craig Llewellyn, Associate Ecologist and Biodiversity Policy Specialist at Atkins Realis. In this first part of a two-part series, we focus on the concept of 'Net Benefit for Biodiversity' within Wales' Planning Policy. Discover how this policy aims to enhance biodiversity at a broader ecosystem level using the innovative DECCA framework. Craig Llewellyn shares his extensive experience and insights on the ecological assessment process, comparing the Welsh net benefit approach to England's biodiversity net gain. Learn about the components of the DECA framework—Diversity, Extent, Condition, Connectivity, and Adaptation to Change—and how they play a crucial role in sustainable development. Tune in to understand how ecological policies are evolving to meet current and future challenges in biodiversity conservation.   Background to NBB The 2016 Environment (Wales) Act introduced a new legal duty on all public authorities to maintain and enhance biodiversity in carrying out their functions (the "Section 6 Duty”). The duty requires public authorities to promote the resilience of ecosystems. The newly implemented 12th Edition of Planning Policy Wales (PPW 12th Edition) requires planning authorities (LPAs) must demonstrate they have taken all reasonable steps to fulfil the Section 6 duty. In Wales, the biodiversity net gain regime is termed “Net Benefit for Biodiversity” (NBB). While it has a similar intent to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in England in delivering an overall improvement in biodiversity, NBB does not use a metric-based approach like BNG, which sets a baseline number of biodiversity units and requires developers to improve biodiversity by a minimum of 10%. NBB supports a proactive approach to be taken by developers to biodiversity, wider ecosystem benefits, and resilience at the design stage. NBB applies to all development in Wales, even in cases where biodiversity value is being maintained rather than enhanced. Unlike the quantitative approach of BNG for development in England, NBB takes a more site-specific and qualitative assessment based on the DECCA resilience attributes and the step-wise mitigation hierarchy. Diversity – Maintaining and enhancing diversity at all levels and scales Extent – Incorporating measures to maintain and increase semi-natural habitat area and linkages Condition – The condition affected by factors like climate change, invasive species, recreation, etc. Connectivity – Maintaining/creating links between and within habitats Aspects of resilience – The product of the above four attributes Any proposed biodiversity enhancements must be appropriate to the local and national environment, considering strategic plans, local strategies, and evidence like area statements. Ecologists need to take a “whole system approach” looking at the baseline biodiversity value and resilience of the entire site, its context in the wider landscape, and opportunities for enhancing resilience in line with the DECCA attributes. A key principle of NBB is that biodiversity enhancement should be proportionate to the scale and nature of the proposed development. While this means small developments can more easily deliver net benefit, it also means planning permission may be refused if no enhancement is proposed as part of an application (PPW 6.4.12). Even where biodiversity value has been maintained on a site, the policy at 6.4.16 states “there must still be a proactive process to look for and secure enhancement through the design and implementation of the development.” Hence, going above and beyond simple mitigation is essential. Developers in Wales will need to be aware of NBB and the Section 6 Duty. This brings additional complexity and cost to the development process. Following the DECCA ecosystem resilience principles and step-wise avoidance/mitigation approach needs to be a central consideration from the very start of the development planning process. Innovative solutions, partnership working, and an appreciation of cumulative impacts in the wider area will all help deliver biodiversity benefits.

(Bristol) Sarah Parkin - Ecologist at SOP Ecology and Caseworker at Scottish Natural Heritage (Dumfies & Galloway) Josh Courtley - Ecologist with Arbtech (Warwickshire) Josh Styles - Ecologist with Atkins and volunteer at Chester Zoo (Cheshire) Emma Scotney - Ecologist with South West Lakes Trust (Devon) Sue Searle - Ecology Training UK (Devon) Claire Munn - Head of Ecology for David Archer Associates (East Sussex) Take away messages: It's difficult to get a protected species licence for surveys, as there are issues finding the right learning environments: so, variety is the spice of life and you may need to consider working towards a licence as 'on the job' training, but supplement with formal and informal training (self-learning, courses, and also mentorships) and of course volunteering. Collaborate. Do not seek out the licence as the goal, but seek out species survey competency instead! Just because you have a licence does not make you a competent ecologist. Gain the skills and experience you need and the rest should fall in place. Develop the right mindset before you commence your journey. The current survey licensing system is different for each devolved country. There should be consistency across the SNCO's as animals and plants do not understand borders, yet a highly competent ecologist in Wales or Scotland may not 'tick all the boxes' when it comes to applying for a personal licence in England. Make sure you know what is required before applying (is it one or two references; how much evidence do you need to provide and in what format). Companies should support their employees in obtaining licences - it makes commercial sense, so they need to get on board and give employees time off for learning and to gain experience in addition to 'on the job' training.  Do not underestimate the value of being an Accredited Agent - it could be a gateway to get your own personal licence, but it may also make commercial sense for some niche species.

It's time to look "through the bottom of the glass" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1969's Dear World on episode nine of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT DEAR WORLD Based on Jean Giraudoux's play The Madwoman of Chaillot, Dear World tells the story of three mad countesses who deviously scheme to stop businessmen from drilling for oil in the Parisian neighborhood of Chaillot in an attempt to let the forces of idealism, love, and poetry win over those of greed, materialism and science. The musical features a book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. Dear World was a passion project of composer Jerry Herman who had starred as the mime character in a college production of the play. He had wished to adapt the piece earlier in his career, however, the rights were unavailable as they'd already been given to another team. After the massive success of both Hello, Dolly! and Mame, though, Herman was finally able to obtain the rights and work quickly began to reunite the team and recreate the magic of the latter. The musical had a notably troubled road to Broadway that included three different directors and multiple changes to the script and score. Trouble continued during previews in New York and the show's opening was postponed several times. Finally, after impatient critics told the production they were going to review the show whether it officially opened or not, an opening night was finally scheduled for February 6, 1969, where it received mostly negative reviews and closed after 132 performances. Originally conceived as a chamber musical, Dear World fell victim to a massive production that effectively overwhelmed the simplicity of the original tale. After the Broadway closing, Herman, Lawrence, and Lee rewrote the show for licensing, "putting back the intimacy that had been undermined on Broadway." In the late 1990s, playwright David Thompson revised the material for a possible revival for the Roundabout Theatre Company. While that production never came to fruition, it did lead to a series of future productions and further revisals at The Goodspeed Opera House, Sundance, and The York Theatre Company featuring performances by legendary leading ladies Sally Ann Howes, Maureen McGovern, and Tyne Daly. Dear World finally had its West End premiere at London's Charing Cross Theatre in 2013 starring Betty Buckley, with direction and choreography by Gillian Lynne.   Original Broadway Cast Angela Lansbury as Countess Aurelia Jane Connell as Countess Gabrielle Carmen Mathews as Countess Constance Milo O'Shea as The Sewerman Kurt Peterson as Julian Pamela Hall as Nina William Larsen as The Chairman of the Board Joe Masiell as The Prospector Ted Agress as The Juggler Michael Davis as The Doorman Miguel Godreau as The Deaf-Mute John Taliaferro as The Peddler Gene Varrone as The Waiter Ty McConnell as The Busboy Clifford Fearl, Charles Karel, Zale Kessler, and Charles Welch as Members of the Board Nicole Barth, Bruce Becker, Toney Brealond, Jane Coleman, Jack Davison, Jacque Dean, Richard Dodd, John Grigas, Marian Haraldson, Tony Juliano, Gene Kelton, Carolyn Kirsch, Urylee Leonardos, Larry Merritt, Ruth Ramsey, Orrin Reiley, Patsy Sabline, Connie Simmons, Margot Travers, and Mary Zahn as The People of Paris

I've got a great guest for you guys today with SUCH an inspirational story. When you think of someone who is homeless and alcoholic, would you think that that person could be a sub 2:20 marathoner? It doesn't seem to fit, right? It seems like two completely different worlds. My guest today, Richard Dodd ran a whole mess of marathons in the 80's alongside his twin brother. Both of them were blazing fast. They were winning marathons, qualifying for and running Boston every year and Richard eventually went on to coach high school cross country and track. He even won Coach of the year. But throughout this story, his drinking problem was catching up with him and things were getting worse and worse. It wasn't long after, he was homeless, drinking all of his money away and thinking about ending his life. Fast forward to now, he is 13 years sober and back to running and coaching. It wasn't an easy path but it's an incredible story of redemption!  I know you guys are going to dig this one.
