SummaryWhat are the vital steps a senior leader have to take as they step into a new leadership role? What to do and what to expect when you are transitioning into that new role? And, separately, to what extent are African leadership models and frameworks different from global North ones? Most importantly, what could global North imprinted leadership models learn from African ones? In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Adama Coulibaly, Global Programs Director at Oxfam, on both these topics. He is a very experienced NGO leader, a coach, and an eloquent thinker and author on all things leadership. And he just transitioned into his new role at Oxfam, so he is here to speak from experience! Adama's Bio:A seasoned leader with nearly 30 years of experience in international development and humanitarian aidGlobal Programs Director, Oxfam International; earlier in his career he was also a Regional Director at Oxfam Leadership positions as Country Director at the International Rescue Committee, Regional Director at Plan International, and Principal Adviser at UNICEFCertified Transformational coach, and somebody who labels himself a 'positive thinker' We discuss: His advice to leaders who are transitioning into an organization, based on his own experienceWhat differentiates African takes on leadership models and frameworks, as distinct from global North imprinted models?Adama Coulibaly (nickname ‘Coul') considers himself a born positive thinker; he learned this behavior in his youth while facing very difficult circumstances in his home country MaliAs an adult, he learned about the field of positive thinking; and that positive thinking is good for your physical and mental healthCoul's advice, in a nut shell, on how to transition into a new senior leadership position:Give yourself at least 2, if not 4 weeks between two jobsUse your break time to learn as much about your new organization as you canCommunicate healthy boundaries immediately, otherwise, you will pay a stiff priceBuild on what works; don't feel the need to change everything or most thingsPrioritize external engagement, insist on it, and commit to external engagements so that your calendar time for this is protectedOn African models of leadership: they tend to focus on the collective nature of people: the person in the context of their community (see for instance the Ubuntu model)Quotes:“Positive thinking is not about utopia: I call myself a realistic positive thinker. There are a lot of negative things in the world. It is about how we balance negative and positive things”“If you have a weak transitioning period, you set yourself up for failure”“As soon as you enter the door, you have to problem solve, there is no honeymoon for senior leaders”Resources:Adama's LinkedIn ProfilePositive minds, a pro bono consulting, coaching, and mentoring group (see also Coul's blog on this site)Coul's blog post about leadership transitionYouTube video of this podcast&l

In this episode, we hop into driver's seat behind crucial environmental decisions, and talk money. It might not sound like a hot topic, but it's a vitally important one. Money, as is so often the case, is the backbone of species reintroduction programmes. And this topic is also a great opportunity to sit across the table and explore the importance and role of government departments like DEFRA and their advisory organisations like Natural England, in ensuring a robust and positive future for nature in Britain. We are joined by Delphine Pouget, Principal Adviser for the Species Reintroduction Programme and the 'beaver lead' at Natural England, the government's advisory body for nature in England. Natural England issue the wildlife management licences that are required to move, capture or kill beavers, or to damage their homes and breeding sites in England. They also work with stakeholders and offer beaver management training and education . Delphine gives an uplifting and fascinating insight into how Natural England are approaching beaver reintroduction, and how to finance a future which benefits both nature and people. Also coming up: another enlightening #FactOff challenge and Sophie sees how many famous beavers Eva knows in the QUIZ. Need we say more? Dive on in! Would you like to discuss anything from this episode with our expert team? We want to hear from you: Beaver Trust. Want more beaver? Please subscribe and leave us a lovely little review, so we can bring the joy of beavers to more ears! Hosted by Sophie Pavelle and Eva Bishop. Produced and edited by Emma Brisdion.

During this episode, host Richard Dodd interviews Dr Nicholas White, Principal Adviser on Net Gain for Natural England, and discusses what skills we need as ecologists to help deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). We get to hear Nick's insights into the Environment Act and the delivery of BNG, the newly updated biodiversity metric, standards, and guidance, as well as marine net gain! Our Guest Nick works across Government (at both a national and local level), and with developers, NGOs, and academia to advance policy, practice, and standards around net gain (including biodiversity, natural capital, and environmental net gain). The current focus of Nick's work is on biodiversity net gain legislation, the biodiversity metric, and biodiversity net gain standards and guidance, as well as working on the evolving approach to marine net gain. As a non-ecologist, Nick is interested in how biodiversity and the natural environment can contribute towards wider social and economic benefits, and has a strong interest in green infrastructure, especially in relation to urban areas and its ability to enhance wider (grey) infrastructure resilience. Nick enjoys engaging with different sectors and seeking opportunities to help secure the delivery of shared outcomes and has previously worked in the health, cultural, and charitable sectors. This Episode During the interview Richard and Nick discuss; how the biodiversity metric tool is not to be used as a decision-making tool, the need to bring ecologists on board at the earliest opportunity, the difference between a S106 Agreement and a Conservation Covenant, where to seek out training, and the advantages of on-site and off-site BNG delivery for developers. We also talk about landowners offering land to help developers deliver BNG and the commercial incentives to doing so, the biodiversity off-set register, management plans, and monitoring. This was a great discussion, and the Ecology Academy are very grateful to Nick for offering up his time to talk with us on the podcast. The Ecology Academy will soon be launching our own Biodiversity Net Gain Fundamentals training course, so be sure to check that out if you would like to run through a case study on how to use the biodiversity metric. Anju Malhotra, principal visiting fellow at the UN University International Institute of Global Health and former Principal Adviser on Gender and Development at UNICEF, talks to Ellen Chesler, Research Fellow at the RBI, about the UN's efforts to promote gender equality and about what has worked, what hasn't, and what steps the UN may take in the future.
