Keen On Democracy
Arlie Russell Hochschild on why America needs marriage counseling

Keen On Democracy

How to put America back together? Few people have thought more about this Humpty Dumpty style challenge than Arlie Russell Hochschild, author of the 2016 classic Strangers In Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right. So when I sat down with Hochschild for my new KEEN ON AMERICA series, we began by talking about what it means to her to be American and whether she's ever felt like a stranger in her own land. Born in 1940, my sense is that Hochschild has spent much of her life grappling with what it means to be a progressive American in a mostly conservative country. The Berkeley based Hochschild has made two significant journeys to the American South - the first in early Sixties as a civil rights activist and the second, fifty years later, to research Strangers In Their Own Land. She talked about both journeys as a form of confronting and then resolving her ambivalence about what it means to be an American. These journeys, then, were her way of building what she calls “empathy bridges” with another America. We talked about the American future too. Hochschild believes the work of the sociologist, like the marriage councillor, is a resolve conflict by bringing people together. In contrast with the dark paranoia of many progressives these days, Hochschild is cautiously optimistic about bringing Americans back together. And this conflict-resolution approach, I suspect, will be familiar with many young Americans for whom therapy has been normalized as an essential feature of 21st century life. Arlie Russell Hochschild's Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, now available in paperback from The New Press, addresses the increasingly bitter political divide in America. A finalist for the National Book Award, and New York Times Best Seller, the book is based on five years of immersion reporting among Tea Party loyalists -- now mostly supporters of Donald Trump. Hochschild tries to bridge an “empathy wall” between the two political sides, to explore the “deep story” underlying the right that remains unrecognized by the left. Mark Danner calls the book “a powerful, imaginative, necessary book, arriving not a moment too soon." Robert Reich writes” Anyone who wants to understand modern America should read this captivating book." In its review, Publisher's Weekly notes: “After evaluating her conclusions and meeting her informants in these pages, it's hard to disagree that empathy is the best solution to stymied political and social discourse.” Her 2012 The Outsourced Self: Intimate Life in Market Times, explores the many ways in which the market enters our modern lives and was named one of the best books of the year by Publishers Weekly. Her other books include: So How's the Family?, The Managed Heart, The Second Shift, The Time Bind, The Commercialization of Intimate Life, The Unexpected Community and the co-edited Global Woman: Nannies, Maids and Sex Workers in the New Economy. In reviewing The Second Shift (reissued in 2012 with a new afterword) Robert Kuttner noted Hochschild's “subtlety of insights” and “graceful seamless narrative” and called it the “best discussion I have read of what must be the quintessential domestic bind of our time.” Newsweek's Laura Shapiro described The Time Bind as “groundbreaking.” In awarding Hochschild the Jesse Bernard Award, the American Sociological Association citation observed her “creative genius for framing questions and lines of insight, often condensed into memorable, paradigm-shifting words and phrases.” A retired U.C. Berkeley professor of sociology, she lives with her husband, the writer Adam Hochschild in Berkeley, California.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Emma hosts Robert Kuttner, founder and editor at the American Prospect, to discuss his recent piece "After Hyper-Globalization". Then Emma is joined by David Adler, General Coordinator at Progressive International, to discuss the recent Colombian elections. First, however, Emma discusses Israel once again disbanding a corrupt far-right apartheid government, to leave the power open for another new far-right apartheid movement to come to power, and dives into the slow but steady emergence of evidence proving more and more of the Uvalde Police's statements as blatant lies attempting to cover their ass as they stood around while children died. Then, Robert Kuttner joins as he and Emma dive right into what hyper globalization is, and why this system, based on a complete absence of regulation of commerce, trade, and production across borders, was so primed to fail (hint: it had to do with its complete refusal to regulate capitalism), collapsing as soon as China arrived in the WTO and refused to comply, and the COVID pandemic shut down supply lines worldwide. Next, Kuttner walks through the history of hyper globalization, with Clinton's neoliberal regimes of the 90s starting a move to international trade agreements that sought to undercut foreign countries' ability to regulate capitalism and gave US Banks footholds abroad, before he and Emma jump back to the 1940s, looking at the conceptual systems that preluded it, focusing on the Bretton Woods system of Keynesian economics that emphasized what was essentially an international new deal, built on the spine of an International Monetary Fund to advance funding to struggling economies, a World Bank for public investment in development, and an International Trade Organization that allows countries to enforce labor rights in international trade. Robert Kuttner then contrasts Keynes' dream with the eventual World Trade Organization as a purified right-wing capitalist version of his vision, abusing concepts of sovereignty, property rights, and intellectual property to bolster Western corporations and keep down nations that they see as only necessary for extraction. They wrap up the interview by touching on the role of Biden (and Trump!) in reversing this global trend, and discuss what a new deal for the global south would look like, and how we can fight for it. Then, Emma is joined by David Adler as he situates Gustavo Petro's victory as the first progressive administration to come to power in Colombia, coming to power in a wholesale rejection of the far-right, neo-imperial military alliance that defined the Uribismo ideology that defined Iván Duque Márquez's administration and those that came before him (since, unsurprisingly, the Uribe administration). They wrap up their discussion with a conversation on the international reactions from both the far-right and the progressive left, the importance of the recent success of leftist candidates in Latin America, and the corruption and lies that fuel the US' relationship in the region. And in the Fun Half: Emma discusses the Chesa Boudin recall with Nathaniel from Berkeley, and Joe Rogan hosts a military-response training specialist to discuss why the police in Uvalde needed more military-response training (which they already had) to protect their egos. Sean from Washington asks Emma about one of the few sports she's not well-versed in, Larry Kudlow asks Pence if he's EVER seen a president lie like this, and Emma and the crew dive into the UK Rail Strike. When President Joe Biden took office, the problems the new president faced were similar to the challenges faced by another U.S. president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt: decreasing opportunity for the average American, disproportionate power of the mega-wealthy, and a starkly divided political system. To help address these issues nearly a century ago, FDR launched The New Deal, forever changing American society. To longtime political analyst Robert Kuttner, the similarities between 2022 and 1932 means President Biden has a similar opportunity to transform the country through major public investments. In his latest book, Going Big, Kuttner draws on the striking similarities between the circumstances of FDR and Biden, including the major crossroads of American politics that marked both their terms. With democratic backsliding, deep partisan divides and the ever-growing power of corporate interests, Kuttner says President Biden's vision for the future will have critical implications for the future of the country—and, just like the New Deal, an army of opposition determined to maintain the status quo. Join us, as Kuttner explains what is at stake for America in 2022 and the opportunity President Biden has at this unprecedented time in the nation's history. I got to tell you again up front, I don't know the guy. I haven't even… He's been in a room twice when I have been with the president, but I've never been formally introduced even, and I've never spoken directly to him. So none of this is, to me, based on any personal knowledge I have of Bannon or the arrangement that Trump and Bannon have. All I can do is speculate hire, which I'll be happy to do. Now, the reason that Washington's in a tizzy today is because Bannon called Robert Kuttner at The American Prospect for an exclusive interview. This would be like Reagan calling Pravda. Unreal, of all the people Bannon could call, he calls Kuttner at The American Prospect. He calls somebody that hates Trump as much as anybody hates Trump, and it was not off the record. He wanted it known. Whatever was in this interview, Bannon wants out there, and it's out there. I watched Karl Rove react to it today and he was beside himself. He just could not believe any of this. He couldn't believe any aspect of it, thought it was the craziest, strangest, oddest, dumbest thing he's ever seen from any administration. https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2017/08/17/what-you-need-to-know-to-understand-all-this-bannon-business/ Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

How much time does the Biden administration have until Republicans revitalize their strength or even expand in the midterms? This is a question brewing among Democrats who wonder whether they should go bold with legislation, or tread lightly to protect the slim majority of Democrats in the House and Senate. In this episode and article, Paul Starr argues that Democrats must be bold in the battles they fight but careful about those they choose. Perhaps above all else, the party must prove that government can work for ordinary people while improving election reform so democracy survives. Starr is professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University and Stuart Professor of communications and public affairs at Princeton's School of Public and International Affairs. He also serves as founding co-editor of The American Prospect, a liberal magazine that he co-founded in 1990 with Robert Kuttner and Robert Reich. Never before has there been so much progressive energy, whether you're looking at the world of activism or think tanks or media. As for the Democratic Party, while it is far from dominant today and struggles to win elections in many places, one cannot recall a time when the party felt more like the vehicle of a true political movement. There's so much going on these days in the progressive world, that it can be hard to get your arms around it and see the big picture. Journalist Robert Kuttner recently published a lengthy and insightful article on Democratic politics and the progressive movement in the American Prospect, the magazine which he is the co-founder. Kuttner has been a keen student of the Democratic party for a very long time, publishing 12 books on the subject. Host David Callahan spoke with Robert Kuttner on what he learned in his career and how progressive politics today fits into a bigger story he's been writing about for decades. Inside Change is produced by David Callahan and Kayan Tara.

Claudia Cragg (@ClaudiaCragg) speaks here with Robert Kuttner (@rkuttnerwrites) whose latest book is. Some of those interviewed in this long-running series are in such high demand that time in discussion is sorely limited. Recently, one such has been Robert Kuttner, co-founder and co-editor of and professor at Brandeis University's Heller School.  In 'The Stakes....', Kuttner argues that the 2020 presidential election will determine the very survival of American democracy. To restore popular faith in government―and win the election― Kuttner believes that Democrats need to nominate and elect an economic progressive. The Stakes explains how the failure of the economy to serve ordinary Americans opened the door to a demagogic president, but also how democracy can still be taken back from Donald Trump. Either the United States continues the long slide into the arms of the bankers and corporate interests and the disaffection of working Americans―the course set in the past half century by Republican and Democratic presidents alike―or a progressive Democrat is elected in the mold of FDR. At stake is nothing less than the continued success of the American experiment in liberal democracy. That success is dependent on a fairer distribution of income, wealth, and life changes ―and a reduction in the political influence of financial elites over both parties. The decay of democracy and economic fairness began long before Trump. The American republic is in need of a massive overhaul. It will take not just a resounding Democratic victory in 2020 but a progressive victory to pull back from the brink of autocracy. The Stakes demonstrates how a progressive Democrat has a better chance than a centrist of winning the presidency, and how only this outcome can begin the renewal of the economy and our democracy. The American Prospect is "devoted to promoting informed discussion on public policy from a progressive perspective. In print quarterly and online daily, the Prospect brings a narrative, journalistic approach to complex issues, addressing the policy alternatives and the politics necessary to create good legislation. (They) help to dispel myths, challenge conventional wisdom, and expand the dialogue." We are delighted to run this interview here even though it was curtailed by sheer pressure of those in a long long queue wanting to pick Kuttner's brains to promote a winning outcome in 2020. We were lucky to get to speak to him at all.  Kuttner also writes for HuffPost, The Boston Globe, and The New York Review of Books.

Kuttner’s astute analysis of the post-war “golden age” starts with measures including the New Deal and the Bretton Woods Agreement, showing how they allowed democracy and capitalism to be mutually supportive and thrive. The balance began to slip in the 1970s; as financial regulations were rolled back and taxes cut, inequality worsened, and frustrated voters turned away from progressive agendas, a right-wing turn that has led us to Trump, Brexit, the precarious state of the European Union, and the rise of nationalisms. Both democracy and capitalism are now foundering and Kuttner, cofounder and co-editor of The American Prospect, asks whether this dissolution was inevitable or if we can use the lessons of the past to re-establish the former harmony.https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780393609936Learn more about your ad choices. April 26, 2018 at the Boston Athenæum. Before and after World War II, a serendipitous confluence of events created a healthy balance between the market and the polity—between the engine of capitalism and the egalitarian ideals of democracy. Under Roosevelt’s New Deal, unions and collective bargaining were legalized. Glass-Steagall reined in speculative finance. At Bretton Woods, a global financial system was devised explicitly to allow nations to manage capitalism. Yet this golden era turned out to be lightning in a bottle. From the 1970s on, a power shift occurred, in which financial regulations were rolled back, taxes were cut, inequality worsened, and disheartened voters turned to far-right, faux populism. Robert Kuttner lays out the events that led to the postwar miracle, and charts its dissolution all the way to Trump, Brexit, and the tenuous state of the EU. Is today’s poisonous alliance of reckless finance and ultra-nationalism inevitable? Or can democracy find a way to survive?

Robert Kuttner discusses his book, The Squandering of America: How the Failure of Our Politics Undermines Our Prosperity. The incomes of most Americans today are static or declining. Tens of millions of workers are newly vulnerable to layoffs and outsourcing. Health care and retirement burdens are increasingly being shifted from employers to individuals. Two-income families find they are working longer hours for lower wages, with decreased social support. As wealth has become more concentrated, the economy has become more recklessly speculative, jeopardizing not only the prospects of ordinary Americans, but the solvency of the entire system. According to Kuttner, what links these trends is Robert Kuttner in this provocative, engaging, and necessary book, is the consolidation of political and economic power by a narrow elite, who blocks the ability of government to restore broad prosperity to the majority of citizens. A co-founder and co-editor of The American Prospect magazine, Kuttner writes for the magazine regularly on a variety of issues. Mostly, however, he focuses on economic policy, both domestic and international. His editorial column, which first appears in The Boston Globe, then on the Prospect website every Thursday, is distributed to 20 major newspapers nationwide. It was awarded the John Hancock Award for excellence in business and financial journalism. As well, Kuttner won the Jack London Award for labor journalism.
