Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** When THERESA HARRIS appears on screen, you cannot take your eyes off of her. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. This week, we look at the extraordinary life and career of the talented THERESA HARRIS.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Theresa Harris, Credited and Uncredited in Over 100 Films,” March 28, 2024, by Herb Boyd, New York Amsterdam News; “Just a Maid in Movies, But Not Forgotten,” April 21, 2011, by Manohla Dargis, The New York Times; “The Underrated Charms of Theresa Harris,” July 11, 2020, by Constance Cherise, TCM.com; “Theresa Harris: Television and Film Actress of the 1930s,” August 18, 2023, by Jae Jones, BackThen.com; “Actress Theresa Harris Hollywood Vixen Turned Servant,”September 2, 2011, by Veronica Wells, Madamenoire; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Thunderbolt (1929), starring Fay Wray and George Brent; Hold Your Man (1932), starring Jean Harlow and Clark Gable; Baby Face (1933), starring Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent; Professional Sweetheart (1933), starring Ginger Rogers, Norman Foster, and Zasu Pitts; Horse Feathers (1932), starring The Marx Brothers and Thelma Todd; Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), starring Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, and Ginger Rogers; Morning Glory (1933), starring Katharine Hepburn and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr; Flying Down to Rio (1933), starring Delores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Ginger Rogers, and Fred Astaire; Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935), starring Jack Benny and Eleanor Powell; Banjo On My Knee (1936), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea; Bargain With Bullets (aka The Gangster's On The Loose) (1937), starring Ralph Cooper and Theresa Harris; Jezebel (1938), starring Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, and George Brent; Tell No Tales (1939), starring Melvyn Douglas and Louise Platt; Buck Benny Rides Again (1940), starring Jack Benny, Ellen Drew, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, and Theresa Harris; What's Buzzin' Cousin? We also explore the pre-code aspect of the film as it contains much innuendo. Ginger is the host of Vintage America with Ginger. She also is a retro singer with the musical band Ginger and the Hoosier Daddys. She has been in films with big names such as Jim Carrey. She was a regular performer on Conan O'Brien's show. We are glad to talk with her for a fifth time on the show. Click and listen! It's a lot of fun.

NO, NO NANETTE (1971) COMPOSER: Vincent Youmans LYRICIST: Irving Caesar, Otto Harbach BOOK: Otto Harbach, Frank Mandel DIRECTOR: Burt Shevelove CHOREOGRAPHER: Donald Saddler PRINCIPLE CAST: Ruby Keeler (Sue), Patsy Kelly (Pauline), Susan Watson (Nanette) OPENING DATE: Jan 19, 1971 CLOSING DATE: Feb 03, 1973 PERFORMANCES: 861 SYNOPSIS: In 1920s New York, Nanette is betrothed to Tom but she has never really experienced life because of her strict guardian, Sue. Before Nanette gets married, with the help of her maid Pauline, she decides to sneak away to the lascivious world of Atlantic City for one last adventure before she says “I do.”  Robert W Schneider illustrates the surprising success held by the 1971 revival of the 1925 musical comedy, No, No, Nanette. Amidst contemporary musicals whose scores and lyrics were specifically linked to the psyches of characters and whose narratives sought to challenge the collective perceptions of audiences, No, No, Nanette's subject matter seemed trite and its songs felt disconnected and superfluous. The aging Hollywood stars tied to the show, Busby Berkeley and Ruby Keeler, furthered the public's assumptions that this production would fail, and the Boston tryout led to major artistic changes. Upon opening, audiences and critics agreed that the show provided a welcome escape from the political turmoil of the day and it was a box office success. The financial victories of the production launched a craze of revivals adhering to director Burt Shevelove's traditionalist approach; honoring the original feel of the piece but tailoring its form for modern audiences. Conversely, this chapter dictates the tenets of revisionist revivals, which seek to reimagine existing works, and outlines other notable motives for reviving works on Broadway. Robert W. Schneider holds academic appointments at Penn State University, New York Film Academy, and Mount Union University, as well as serving as the Artistic Director for The J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company and as an original programming producer at Feinstein's/54 Below in New York City. He is the host of the podcasts Behind The Curtain: Broadway's Living Legends, Gay Card Revoked, and This Was A Thing. For the past fifteen years Robert has been one of the most prolific leaders of online education in the arts. He is a proud member of SDC, AEA, and AGVA.  SOURCES No, No, Nanette, Revival Cast Recording, Columbia (1971) The Making of No, No, Nanette by Don Dunn, published by Citadel Press (1972) No, No, Nanette starring Bernice Claire and Alexander Gray, directed by Clarence G Badger, First National Pictures (1930) No, No, Nanette starring Anna Neagle and Zazu Pitts, directed by Herbert Wilcox, Suffolk Productions (1940) Learn more about your ad choices. Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand. Broadcasting from New York, the series premiered at 2:30 pm, October 14, 1934, on the NBC Blue Network with a production of Seventh Heaven starring Miriam Hopkins and John Boles in a full-hour adaptation of the 1922–24 Broadway production by Austin Strong. The host was the show's fictional producer, Douglass Garrick (portrayed by John Anthony). Doris Dagmar played another fictional character, Peggy Winthrop, who delivered the Lux commercials. Each show featured a scripted session with Garrick talking to the lead actors. Anthony appeared as Garrick from the premiere 1934 episode until June 30, 1935. Garrick was portrayed by Albert Hayes from July 29, 1935, to May 25, 1936, when the show moved to the West Coast. Famed studio executive and film producer and director Cecil B. DeMille took over as the host on June 1, 1936, continuing until January 22, 1945. That initial episode with DeMille featured stars Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable in The Legionnaire and the Lady. On several occasions, usually when he was out of town, he was temporarily replaced by various celebrities, including Leslie Howard and Edward Arnold. Lux Radio Theatre strove to feature as many of the original stars of the original stage and film productions as possible, usually paying them $5,000 an appearance. In 1936, when sponsor manufacturer Lever Brothers (who made Lux brand soap and detergent) moved the show from New York City to Hollywood, the program began to emphasize adaptations of films rather than plays. The first Lux film adaptation was The Legionnaire and the Lady, with Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable, based on the film Morocco. That was followed by a Lux adaptation of The Thin Man, featuring the movie's actual stars, Myrna Loy and William Powell.

Back in the 1950s, cover songs weren't a big deal at all, especially if you were in a doo-wop group. Most of those groups started out in churches and in schools, and performed on street corners or Amateur Hour shows, and they weren't writing their own material so much as they were adapting the songs that they'd heard and already knew. So it was with The Flamingos and their biggest hit, "I Only Have Eyes For You," which dates back to the 1934 film Dames, featuring Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler. Check out this mostly-instrumental "dance" number! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P76cUtCGRQs For a song that's so well-known among Oldies fans, it didn't do that well on the charts in 1959, peaking at #11 on the pop chart and #3 on the R&B chart. And I have a theory about that, but you'll have to listen in. As usual, you can get it via your favorite podcatcher, or you canclick on the player below to listen/download: And, of course, leaving a positive rating in iTunes or other software is always helpful. Thanks for listening!
