The 17 year-old Al Stewart played electric guitar in a dance band in Bournemouth in 1963. When he borrowed an acoustic and sang Masters Of War in the break, he heard the sweet sound of applause. The next night he played three Dylan songs and sensed which way the wind was blowing. He talks here about moving to London, playing at Bunjies and becoming the compere at Les Cousins as his now 60-year career began to lift off. And about his Farewell Tour which kicks off in the UK in October 2025, a combination of songs and story-telling coloured by two great heroes, Peter Ustinov and Alistair Cooke. This cracking exchange steers by way of Bert Jansch, Bob Dylan, Helen of Troy, Stalin, Hitler and the Battle of Moscow, the Weeley Festival of 1971, the three songs he always plays, the young Cat Stevens and what he told Paul Simon he should do with the just-composed Homeward Bound. Order Al Stewart tickets here:https://www.ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/al-stewartFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The worst thing that ever happened to you… Is it really? Or did it end up being the best thing to ever happen? The city of Chicago has a nice, grid-like layout, but that wouldn't have happened if the city hadn't burned down in the 19th century. Oftentimes, things we deem to be negative end up being some of the best things to happen to us. Don't trap yourself in a mediocre condition. For this episode, we're going back to Pearl Jam's first ever appearance at Fenway Park back in 2016. It's appropriate timing because they'll be playing two shows there to close out the tour in September. While it has all of the baseball references and former Red Sox player appearances, the overarching focal point of this episode will focus on the personal experience that Randy had during this show. Have you ever had a concert blunder that you wish you could take back? Did you ever miss a chunk of the set due to arriving late or other negligence? That's what we're going to talk about here as this show was the one and only time that Randy was not in his seat for the opening song. He'll take you through the whole story and hopefully absolve his demons by the end of the show. ***Please note that our audio for this episode is not up to snuff due to connectivity issues during the recording. It's listenable, but expect some glitches throughout*** Playing in one of MLB's legendary cathedrals, Ed would mention on multiple occasions at this show that playing Fenway was a dream come true. It was a night dedicated to celebrating the big moment, and there were plenty of special guests and special performances to back that up. We get our fair share of rarities at this show, including one of the ultra rare deep cuts in their catalog, Strangest Tribe. Back to back with Into The Wild song Society may consist of the rarest opening to an encore of all-time. We also get two massive covers that hadn't been seen at Pearl Jam shows going back a decade. Bob Dylan protest song, Masters Of War was a massive highlight that hadn't been played in 200 shows prior to this, and I've Got A Feeling brought you back to the early 90s and was played for the first time since 2004. Add in that former Red Sox pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, joined in to play Black and former first baseman Kevin Youkilis brought out a uke, it was jam packed with unforgettable moments. Our Gear Guru segments on this episode will have Javier talking about a delay effect coming from Mike on Masters Of War, and a little bit of Ed talk on guitar during Porch. In this episode we're talking about one of the wildest sets in Pearl Jam's catalog coming out of Newcastle, Australia in 2006. This is a one and done city at the point of this release, they'd never played Newcastle before then and haven't played there since. There are two key factors as to why they played there in the first place. For one, world champion surfer Mark Richards made a push for them to play, as well as a fan made petition featuring 2,277 signatures of the locals. Since this was such a unique situation, the band gave Richards the important duty to put pen to paper on this set, and boy oh boy he didn't disappoint. If you like to listen and go to shows where Pearl Jam does something completely out of the ordinary, you may be sold on this show from the first note. For only the second time in history, Alive was played as the opener of the show. This is the true definition of the phrase 'anything can happen at a Pearl Jam show' and is why this show over time has been elevated to legendary status. We'll take about the memorable moments from this version and how the song gave this show a very strong momentum that stayed consistently high the entire night. And how about the other rarities? For only the second time in their history, the band broke out Undone for a performance, one of five all-time. Leatherman, Down, Masters Of War, Crown Of Thorns and Alone are more surprises that pop in to make this show stand out, as well as Even Flow closing the first encore and Corduroy beginning the second encore. Lest we forget, there is an incredible 9-song run with no stops to begin this night. This show takes you on a ride, so take a listen and come celebrate it with us! We had the pleasure of interviewing Cha Wa over Zoom video! GRAMMY-nominated band Cha Wa will return on April 2 with My People, a new collection that draws from the rich and vibrant street culture of New Orleans. Arriving via the renowned southern independent label Single Lock Records, My People exuberantly infuses contemporary sounds with the music of street parades and the Mardi Gras Indian community – a group of Black New Orleanians who pay respect to Native American tribes their wardrobe, music and dialect. Packed with a vivid assemblage of New Orleans sounds and stories, this collection of new original songs draws from the grooves of ‘70s New Orleans funk bands like The Meters (particularly on offerings like “Wildman” and “Bow Down”) and takes clear influence from the city's history of Brass band music, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, rock, soul and African-inspired arrangements (including a chilling cover of Bob Dylan’s “Masters Of War” in this style). Cha Wa was formed by bandleader Joe Gelini shortly before the release of the group’s 2018 debut album Spyboy, which was recognized with a Best Regional Roots Album nomination at the GRAMMYs that year. A student of the legendary New Orleans drummer Idris Muhammad, Gelini was taken by the city’s street culture along with the sounds of the Mardi Gras Indians and began to immerse himself in that world after moving to the area. Working with vocalist Joseph Boudreaux Jr, a lifelong member of those New Orleans musical circles, and many of the top musicians from the city's Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs and Second Line brass bands, Cha Wa quickly became a staple of that street culture before bringing their spin on Mardi Gras Indian music to the GRAMMYs and around the world. With roots dating back to the 19th century, Mardi Gras Indians are most commonly associated with internationally-known New Orleans celebrations like Fat Tuesday, but the tradition is said to have started as a way for the city’s Black community to express gratitude to Native Americans for giving shelter to New Orleanians fleeing enslavement. In more recent years, Mardi Gras Indians have displayed their role as community leaders with front line responses to both Hurricane Katrina and the unlawful NOPD conduct that resulted in investigations by the Obama administration. Why I Am Antiwar

I had just turned 16, and my father had planned for years to take me on a cross-country road trip when I could drive. So we set out on an 8000-mile, 25-day trip with 10 CDs in the car. Three of them were Bob Dylan. Two were the best of and the third was “freewheeling.” Musically, I was familiar with Hendrix, the Stones, and the Animals from my father’s record collection, but I hadn’t yet listened to Bob Dylan. At first it grated on me. It was 2000, and I was a teenager and growing at least somewhat interested in the angry music that was popular at the time, like Slipknot. At first, Bob Dylan didn’t appeal to me, but then “masters of war” came on. From the first notes, the song seethed with anger in a way I had never experienced before. Bob Dylan himself said the song startled him. Often, antiwar art can be misinterpreted by its audience. As a young man, I was completely blind to the messages in movies I loved like “Full Metal Jacket” and “Platoon.” But as a critic said, it was “the bluntest condemnation in Dylan's songbook, a torrent of plain speaking pitched at a level that even the objects of its bile might understand it” I was particularly struck by the line “..for threatening my baby, unborn and unnamed..” His son Jakob was familiar to me for his own hit “one headlight” with his band The Wallflowers, and something about the connection between Bob Dylan and his concern for his unborn child struck me particularly clearly. This was one of the first times I Imagined that our military and its wars could affect us here at home, and it was one of the first moments my mind opened to the idea that one could be strong, and even angry, yet prefer peace to violence. It took me many more years and countless revisitations of this song, but each time I find it more rewarding. That song was recorded in 1963, and nearly 60 years later the song is every bit as relevant today. You’ve thrown the worst fear That can ever be hurled We are in the midst of a multibillion dollar update to our nuclear arsenal, while tensions with nuclear armed powers escalate and arms treaties expire. Even more now than in the 1960s, war seems sanitized and our weapons have lost their stigma of fear, becoming normalized. When our soldiers die, they are boxed up, draped in a flag, and sent home with honors/ You fasten the triggers For the others to fire Then you set back and watch When the death count gets higher You hide in your mansion As young people’s blood Flows out of their bodies And is buried in the mud The truth is that even if there are fewer “unknown soldiers’ buried in the mud,’ death is every bit as ghastly. And even if it is sanitized for the cameras, the hundreds of thousands of civilians killed in these wars still suffer and are buried in shallow graves. We must all see through the mask again and refuse to accept the sanitized vision of modern warfare.

Relax everyone, we’ve found Boris Johnson. The Prime Minister had been missing for more than a week. And it’s not as if there was anything important for him to be worrying about — just floods, Brexit and the coronavirus. We look at the perpetual state of war between Downing Street, the civil service and the media, and wonder what — if anything — could fix it.Priti Patel is in the eye of that storm, but it’s hardly the first time she’s got on the wrong side of her officials.Plus rumours of an unexpected return from the wilderness, and a reluctant show of solidarity for Yorkshire.More at twitter.com/partygamespod and twitter.com/paulosbourne - we’re also at facebook.com/partygamespod and instagram.com/partygamespod - plus at partygamespodcast.com you can listen back to past episodes and subscribe to future ones.

The story of the Trojan War has fascinated humans for centuries and has given rise to countless scholarly articles and books, extensive archaeological excavations, epic movies, television documentaries, stage plays, art and sculpture, souvenirs and collectibles. In the United States there are thirty-three states with cities or towns named Troy and ten four-year colleges and universities, besides the University of Southern California, whose sports teams are called the Trojans. Particularly captivating is the account of the Trojan Horse, the daring plan that brought the Trojan War to an end and that has also entered modern parlance by giving rise to the saying “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” and serving as a metaphor for hackers intent on wreaking havoc by inserting a “Trojan horse” into computer systems.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/anthologyofhorror)

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

At age 14, journalist Dorian Lynskey had a “huge resentment” towards Bob Dylan and the “horrible old has-beens” in the Traveling Wilburys: “SCREW YOU! GET OUT OF THE WAY!” Young Dorian continued to be unmoved by Dylan’s 1997 heart condition: “Oh, I guess he’s dying now: Time Out Of Mind is the mortality album”. He has since revised his opinion. “I like his weird, apocalyptic psycho-geography of America.” He admires the man’s indifference: “Piss off. I’m going to disappoint you again”. In-depth discussions include: Masters Of War, the upcoming Neil Young Hyde Park concert, Greil Marcus, Chronicles Volume One and the best Dylan cover versions (check out Phil Flowers And The Flower Shop’s version of Like A Rolling Stone). Dorian’s books include The Ministry Of Truth: A Biography of George Orwell’s 1984, 33 Revolutions Per Minute: A History of Protest Songs and The Guardian Book of Playlists. He writes on music for The Guardian, was music critic for The Big Issue and has freelanced for Q, GQ, Mojo, Word, Spin, Empire and The Observer. Tollans musikaliska

Svaret får ni i Dylankvinnorna. Den första spelades in 1964 av Linda Mason med titeln How Many Seas Must A White Dove Sail. Vi lyssnar även på spännande Dylan-tolkningar av andra kvinnliga artister som Karen Dalton, Abbey Lincoln, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Madeleine Peyroux, Hart Rouge och punkgruppen Malaria från Berlin.   Låtlista: JUST LIKE A WOMAN Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 000149, 512352 6    MISTER TAMBOURINE MAN Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Abbey Lincoln/ Julien Lourau/ Marc Cary/ Michael Bowie/ Aaron Walker VERVE 00383, 533 559-2   4TH TIME AROUND Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 000149, 512352 6   RESTLESS FAREWELL Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 00149, COL 519892 2   DESOLATION ROW Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 00149, 512351 6   IF NOT FOR YOU Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 00149, 88697 08230 2   BOOTS OF SPANISH LEATHER Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Joan Baez VANGUARD 000381, VCD-79306/7   DIEU A NOS COTES Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan. After the Latest U.S. Airstrike, Can Anyone Wonder Why Do 'They' Hate Us? by Liliana Segura http://www.alternet.org/bloggers/www.alternet.org/139923/ War is the end of the chain of consequences of statism Extortion and fiat currency inflation are the statist means to war Terrorism arises from statism; it won't be defeated until statism is extinguished The "war on terror" isn't about freedom or justice; it's a con game to deny people's freedoms The Historical Societal Problem http://www.logicallearning.net/libhistoricalsoc.html Resorting to violence by Larken Rose http://www.libertyforall.net/?p=2770 We live in a politically enslaved culture; people pretend they aren't slaves, as they slavishly obey If government were voluntary...it would then become a justice agency that respects property rights Government is the initiation of force People in government don't own anything, so they have NO jurisdiction Only smart acts of civil disobedience, coupled with education, will be able to appreciably change the status quo Reason and reality prevail over violence and mythology Just How Free Is the World’s Freest Economy? by John C. Goodman http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NDgyZmI1NGNlNmYzYjA5YzFkMGQ3YjY4MTU2MzMwNWE= "Free health care"...at whose expense? Any and all governmental "benefits" are neither moral nor just--in addition to being terribly efficient Property taxes mean that you don't own your property; those in government can seize it anytime Voting to get goodies from government yields a giant welfare state Voting destroys self-responsibility and free market prosperity Humans must respect themselves enough to embrace and promote the ethics of liberty Why I Write And Publish The Voluntaryist by Carl Watner http://www.voluntaryist.com/articles/093.php No people should presume to be authorities over your own mind and life The "law" is something created by other human beings to control people; lawmakers have no understanding of individual rights and natural law--and therefore no understanding of justice Philosophical enlightenment of our culture is key to successful change bumper music "Masters Of War" by Bob Dylan http://www.bobdylan.com/#/songs/masters-war to comment, please go to http://completeliberty.com/magazine/category/91697
