In today's episode I'm discussing my latest project - creating my own silkscreen stencil! I used my cricut to cut out a design from removable vinyl, stuck it to this silkscreen mesh, and then used it to create some beautiful polymer clay pieces. This week I'm talking with street artist Clown Solider. Clown Solider was one of the first wheat paste artists I met. I was drawn to the scale of his work and that these 7-foot-tall pieces were silkscreened then hand painted. After a few years off he's back putting pieces on the street. I wanted to talk to him about what he's learned in his time as a street artist and where his work is headed.

I just do art because I am ugly and there's nothing else for me to do….”- Andy Warhol Who was Andy Warhol? We know his work (soup cans- images of celebrities) but what motivated him to create his art? In this episode we will explore Andy Warhol's life defining experience- the time he was shot by a radical feminist play write/drifter. This event was ultimately overshadowed by Bobby Kennedy's assassination days later- maybe that's why you haven't heard the story. Let's delve into the world of Andy Warhol, the good, the bad, and the ugly. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum check in on the latest batch of simulpubs and one shots! First they talk about the newest one shot doujinshi by Isaki Uta from Irodori Comics with Silkscreen, which once again explores more bittersweet romance between two characters, as well as identity and how sometimes people only see what they want to see. Afterwards, they cover the newest series from Shonen Jump, including Hunter's Guild: Red Hood, a stylishly beautiful Grimms' Fairy Tale inspired story from former assistant to My Hero Academia's Kohei Horikoshi, Yiuki Kawagushi! As well as Neru: Way of the Martial Artists from Minya Hiraga, a story about a young teenager so obsessed with learning martial arts that he ends up going to a school all about teaching different styles of it! Lastly we discuss the newest installment of Yuto Tsukuda & Shun Saeki's One Piece spin-off, Shokugeki no Sanji, as well as Chainsaw Man creator, Tatsuki Fujimoto's heart-breakingly beautiful one shot, Look Back! My guest today is Bob Gruen, who is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over fifty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition. Bob was in Toronto for the opening of an exhibition of his work at the Liss Gallery in Yorkville that runs until July 6th. As a photographer myself, I had a lot of questions for him about the art of photography and what his experiences were working with the greatest rock and roll performers of all time. Poster art produced following the Cuban Revolution offers a window into the island nation’s history and a truly revolutionary chapter in graphic design. With a unique graphic wit and exuberant colorful style, these posters rallied the Cuban people to the task of building a new society. They helped organize massive sugar harvests and national literacy campaigns, promoted solidarity with global liberation struggles, and celebrated Cuba’s cultural scene.

Silkscreen or screenprinting has its roots in wall decoration, ceramics, and fabrics produced by ancient cultures. In the 1850’s, the Japanese developed stencils held together by silk; the first patent for the process was attained in Michigan in 1887. Harder-wearing polyester meshes, ink technology, and stencil fabrication continued to evolve. The medium exploded in the fine art world in the 1960’s. With a squeegee, printing ink is spread over and forced through a screen. Ink is transferred to the paper on the other side. The final image is printed in its original orientation. A design may be applied to the screen in various ways. One method is to cut a paper stencil and attach it to the underside of the screen. Another is to paint out areas of the screen with a liquid that sets and blocks the holes in the mesh.
