Season 5 kicks off with a new format. Instead of starting with my lecture, each episode begins with my conversation with the Living Leadership guest.  My hope is that those of you not in the class will find it easier to enjoy the lessons from the guests - and not feel forced to wade through my lecture!  In the Episode 1 Living Leadership Interview segment, I was lucky to sit down with Charles Houston to discuss his leadership philosophy and how he sees it playing out in his day-to-day. Charles is a Senior Vice President Commercial Lending of Broadway Bank and was recently selected as a recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award by the San Antonio Business Journal.  Charles graduated from Trinity in 2009 with a degree in accounting and was a standout on the men's basketball team while on campus. He was also in a social fraternity and a member of the Black Student Union. During our conversation, he highlights the importance of mentors and why taking calculated risks is key for great leaders. Charles talks at length about why great leaders focus on developing relationships, do more than is expected, are vulnerable, and create a culture where people are allowed to make mistakes.  Listen for how Charles describes lessons learned from travel, internships, and why being authentic is the foundation for developing strong relationships.  After my conversation with Charles, I lecture on chapter 1 of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." General concepts of leadership are discussed, the term is defined, and there's a special focus on the connection between leadership and power. Send me your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going on Twitter / X (@TingleJK) or on LinkedIn.

Justin: One hour. Welcome to The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Michael Girdley. He's kind of all things. I'm going to hit some of the points from his website. His bio, he's currently Chairman and Co-founder of Dura Software. He's a partner at Geekdom Fund. He's been involved in co-founding and leading multiple different ventures in San Antonio and around Texas. He was Man of the Year with San Antonio Business Journal and Geek of the Year with Geekdom, right, in 2016. He's passionate about San Antonio's future. If you follow him on Twitter, you know how much San Antonio and the future of our city matters to him. He's a perfect kind of guest to have on here, so thanks for being here. Michael: Yes, excited. Thanks for having me. Justin: You've listened to a few of my really compelling episodes, so I appreciate it. Michael: Yes, four actually. [unintelligible 00:01:10] Justin: That's more than most people. I start a lot with just some general questions about San Antonio I wanted to ask you about. Michael: Yes. Justin: All right. Do you have any pets? Michael: We have two cats. Justin: Okay. What kind of cats? Michael: Four-legged ones, simple. Justin: Like alley cats? Michael: Ones we got at The Humane Society. Justin: Okay. Some people are into like Persians or these bald cats. Michael: Yes, we're not. Justin: None of that? Michael: We're not fancy. Justin: All right. Favorite hidden gems in San Antonio? Michael: Oh man. I definitely like just the normal taquerias that are like all over the place. Justin: Do you have a favorite? Michael: Man, I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. They're all my favorites. Justin: I had a judge on here who wouldn't give me a single restaurant she liked because she didn't want to endorse them. Michael: I love that we have Tex-Mex. To be totally frank with you, I don't enjoy eating it that much. When my wife and I have options to go out or we go out for dinners like we're ended up at Bliss or Cured or those types of places. We lived in California for a while and we still brought that taste back with us. We want to eat that kind of food and have that kind of dining experience. Justin: Bliss and Cured do it for you. Michael: They're definitely fancy. We love going to the Pearl Food Hall as well. I will be unabashedly snobby about where I like to go. Justin: I like the Food Hall now that you can just sit at your table and order on the QR code and it comes out. I appreciate that, especially during the pandemic. Do you have any odd hobbies other than your Twitter? Michael: Twitter is definitely one. I've really gotten to pasture into plane tracking. Yes, it's a really interesting hobby. Justin: What's the goal of this? Michael: What do you mean what's the goal? Justin: I mean other than just see where planes are going. Michael: How could it not be obvious that plane-- we live in the flight path underneath San Antonio International. The runways are aligned in a way to orient towards the natural flow of air, which is either coming off the Gulf or going towards the Gulf. We get lots of planes taking off and landing all the time. The Resilient Recruiter
How to Bill Half a Million and Work Less Than 15 Hours a Week, with Michelle Parchman, Ep #89

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2021 54:59

Is it really possible to work less and make more? It seems counter-intuitive and the majority of big billers I know advocate the “hustle and grind” approach. But what if you could work smarter rather than harder?   My special guest, Michelle Parchman, has been doing this for years - billing half a million dollars per annum by working 2 to 3 hours a day. Like me, you will find her thought process revolutionary! Listening to our conversation may move you to revisit your way of working, your values and how you define success. Michelle is originally a CPA and began her public accounting career in auditing with Anderson in Dallas. After 17 years in Big Four public accounting plus seven years with the largest executive search firm in San Antonio, she founded Parchman and Parchman Executive Search in 2009, specializing in accounting, finance, tax, legal and C-level searches. Parchman and Parchman was named by Forbes as one of America's best recruiting firms and Michelle has been described as one of San Antonio's Most Inspiring and Influential Women. She is also a Board Director for the Pinnacle Society, the premier consortium of 80 leading recruiters in North America. Episode Outline and Highlights [2:37] Transition from accounting to executive search - Michelle shares her story. [9:50] Putting processes and systems in place to make things happen - what to learn from Indy Race's refuelling methods.  [12:00] How to accomplish billing half a million and work in less than 15 hours a week - four solid takeaways. [16:54] Why is Michelle working only two to three hours a day? Hear her revolutionary insight. [22:01] Best practices on planning and prioritization - when to do it, how to do it, and thought process. [30:09] Network power and why your network can be your bank account. [34:22] Advice on becoming super efficient. [43:31] How to become a master in a balanced life. [51:00] Why Michelle works exclusively with clients. From Public Accounting to Executive Search Michelle revealed her journey and transition from being a public accountant for 17 years to becoming an owner of an executive search business. If you are just starting your career as a recruiter, you will definitely relate to her story. It was not all rainbows and butterflies, as she also relayed how it was challenging for her at the outset. The recruitment firm she initially worked for did not fully fit with her way of working, which led her to create systems and processes. “It was very challenging in the first six months, I didn't think that I was going to like it, I didn't think I was going to succeed, but once I was able to kind of roll up my sleeves and lay out processes like ‘this is how we are going to strategize to get new clients'… It was great!” With her current success, what were really her daily thoughts during the painstaking first six months? “I think I typically persevere and I want to succeed and I am motivated. I'm just not willing to not let this work.” Indeed, an inspiring story for our new recruiters out there, or anyone facing adversity and overwhelm. Bill Half Million and Work Less Than 15 Hours a Week Is it possible to hit half a million dollars in billings by working only 15 hours a week? “It is 100 percent possible, and I have been doing it for years and years,” Michelle confirmed. The foundation is her thought process.  She evaluates and prioritizes all her work activities based on ROI (return on investment). “It is because I look at everything as ROI. So every single thing I do, I think in my head, what is the return on my investment? For me it's time.  Time and then money. I try to make sure that everything I do is going to take me the least amount of time and give me the highest amount of money.” Some of my key takeaways of our conversation: Thinking about the ROI - not just for money but for your time. “Working closest to the money.” Coming up with the ten most important things to do each day - ranked . Know your values (what's most important to you) and prioritize accordingly. The Power of Network Another key factor for success that Michelle revealed in our conversation was her network. She said, “I just feel blessed in the sense that I know really smart people.” Her network is based on two foundational principles - relationship building and ethics. Ethics plays a major role when selecting her network. Also knowing that the people she surrounds herself with are so trusted and credentialed, it makes her job really easy when she gets referrals because she knows that they would only refer her people who also have the same level of ethics and professionalism.  Our Sponsors This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro®.  i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Josh Lannon, Warriors Heart President and Founder and Co-Author of “The Social Capitalist”, had a vision to open a healing center for our warriors / protectors so they could heal with the peers only. After getting sober in 2001, Josh and his wife Lisa Lannon opened 6 healing centers to help others “get loved ones back”. In 2013, the Lannons joined forces with Former Special Forces Tom Spooner to open Warriors Heart in Bandera, Texas, outside San Antonio (Warriors Heart is the first and only private residential treatment center in the US for “warriors only” – military, veterans and first responders). With a bold vision to bring 1 million warriors home from addiction and PTSD, Warriors Heart is leading the way in chemical dependency treatment for our warriors. Josh is a leading Professor at the AKKI annual international seminars and teaches martial arts worldwide - and Brazilian Jujitsu is part of the Warriors Heart recovery program. Josh's work has been seen in Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, KSAT, KENS 5, FOX 10 Phoenix, ESPN Radio and more. https://www.warriorsheart.com/about-us/staff/#josh-lannon Josh Lannon TV Interview Warriors Heart Private Inpatient Healing Center KENS CBS  San Antonio, Texas https://youtu.be/pNdn5t7uG6s    AND https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNH8lgBSO18 You can get Special Blend from Black Rifle Coffee Company here  Important Notes about Warriors Heart Foundation vs Warriors Heart as a reference: The Warriors Heart Foundation helps subsidize the cost of treatment for Warriors who do not have insurance benefits, including VA benefits. Most funding goes towards treatment services at the Warriors Heart Facility (a separate entity from the foundation), but also covers funding for other verified programs. With the unacceptable averages of 20 veteran suicides per day and 1 law enforcement officer every 62.5 hours in the U.S., the goal is not to turn anyone away for financial reasons. The Warriors Heart Foundation supports programs that give individuals and communities the tools to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. Donations help: Subsidize funding for chemical dependency and PTSD treatment that includes detox, in-patient residential treatment services, intensive outpatient program (IOP), one-on-one therapy and sober living. Fund ESA or Service Dogs for warriors that includes trained emotional support animals that provide a specific service to a warrior. Fund Sober Living housing for warriors who need continued support where there is structure after treatment while going back to school, volunteering and/or receiving outpatient treatment. Promote behavioral health education for veteran, law enforcement & firefighter resources for what to look for with chemical dependencies and PTSD. In-kind donations also support warrior healing, which may include donations of wood, building materials, steel, metal and wood shop equipment, volunteer work, products and other partnerships. Current foundation partnership programs include the Gary Sinise Foundation, Black Rifle Coffee Company, U.S. Elite Footwear and an MTM l Watch Limited Edition Series.  Warriors Heart Foundation (Bandera, Texas) Warriors Heart Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) that accepts donations to help heal our protectors with their peers. One of the missions of the foundation is to provide financial aid through hardship grants that assist in covering the cost of treatment at Warriors Heart to help our military, veterans and first responders get the treatment they have earned and deserve. https://www.warriorsheartfoundation.org Warriors Heart (Bandera, Texas near San Antonio): Warriors Heart is the first and only private accredited treatment program in the U.S. exclusively for “warriors” (active duty military, veterans, first responders and EMTs/paramedics) faced with the self-medicating struggles of alcohol addiction, prescription and drug addiction, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), mild TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and other co-occurring issues in a private, 60-bed facility on a 543-acre ranch. Along with a minimum 42-day peer-to-peer residential treatment program, Warriors Heart gives “warriors” the option of Detox, Day Treatment, Outpatient, and Sober Living (60-day minimum). Warriors Heart’s work has been featured on the TODAY Show, CBS Health Watch, FOX 11 Los Angeles, National Defense Radio Show and in TIME, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, Addiction Pro magazine, San Antonio Business Journal and many more. There is a 24-hour Warriors Heart hotline (844-448-2567) answered by warriors. https://www.warriorsheart.com/

He is candid, honest and open about our successes and failures. Great episode and a must listen if you live in San Antonio or the greater Bexar County. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello in Bienvenidos, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour discussing the people, places and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonion and a keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. [applause] Welcome. Today's guest on The Alamo Hour for Episode 8 is Precinct 4, Commissioner Tommy Calvert. Tommy, thank you for being here. Tommy Calvert: Super to be on with you. Congratulations on your show. Justin: Thank you. This is our first Zoom. Hopefully, it goes well. Tommy: We're trying to move everybody into the new century here. [laughter] Justin: All right. Tommy has been representing Precinct 4 since 2014. He's in his second term. He's been involved in lots of stuff including international policy, antislavery issues. He was recently named top 40 under 40 by the San Antonio Business Journal. In my opinion, I think the most impressive thing about you, Tommy, is your retail politics, what you're doing for your actual constituents is something you don't see political leaders do enough of. Hats off to you, man. Seriously, kudos. You do such a good job. I just want you to know that a lot of people notice that. Tommy: Oh my God, thank you. I couldn't have done it without my father's teachings. He deserves the credit. Justin: Well, hopefully, he'll listen to this. Tommy: I'm sure he will. Justin: [laughs] We have Tommy on here today to talk about a few things. These are one of the things that I don't know how to do. Are you hearing that, Tommy? Tommy: I do hear that. Justin: I don't know-- Tommy: It was like a light bulb. It's probably my father saying thank you. Justin: [laughs] We might just be dealing with that some today since this is Zoom and I don't know how to turn off that stuff. We have Tommy on here today to talk about a few things. The elephant in the room is your work and the County's work as it relates to this pandemic response. I want to talk to you a little bit about a few things. We are going to talk about the response, the science, the expectations of people in San Antonio, what resources are available and then not gloom and doom, I want to talk to you a little bit about what's next for the County and San Antonio moving forward because this isn't a forever thing but this is a really tragic, heavy, bad thing right now. All right? Tommy: Sure. I'm ready whenever you're ready. Justin: All right. We've been doing this with everybody who comes on the show so far is talking a little bit about a top 10, a little color commentary and I've changed it for you a little bit because I realize you're in a different position. How are you spending your time decompressing right now? Tommy: There's not a lot of time to decompress because we have an emergency. I'm like a general in a war zone and it's a seven-day a week and it's first thing 5:00 AM to midnight hours for us right now. I will get to work out maybe two or three times a week. I'll decompress that way. We have just family. We might have a couple tequila shots and some beer on Friday and Saturday night and just decompress as best as you can. That's not a lot. I've been to a park and walked. I've got a five-mile walk in one day but that's about it. Everything's closed. A decompression might be a drive to the store out of the house because you're in the house so much. Maybe a drive to the courthouse office or...

Darryl Lyons is the CEO and co-founder of the PAX Financial Group which helps people improve their financial planning and quality of life through strategies for investing. He is a licensed financial planner and the author of Small Business, Big Pressure. Darryl began his career in the financial sector right after university and throughout his career; he had won awards for recruiting and development form Fortune 100 companies.  He started PAX Financial Group back in January 2007 with his co-founders Andres Gutierrez and Joseph Schuetze. He has built the company to officially become “one of the best places” to work in San Antonio.  Darryl also served as the Chairman for the Brooks Development Authority which earned him the honor of having Mayor Julian Castro name a park “The Darryl W Lyons Park”. He was also named to the 2010 San Antonio Business Journal's “40 Under 40 Rising Stars” which honors people making a difference in business and the community   Period in full–time business  Started out alone about 12 years ago and after 2 years, brought in 2 partners to form PAX Financial Group. In the beginning he had a sole proprietorship business.  Current Revenue streams  The main revenue sources for PAX Financial are managing people's money, insurance services and group retirement accounts. Darryl and his team take pride in liberating people when it comes to managing their money. Their services enable their clients to focus on what they are good at.     Starting out in business  His entrepreneurial journey started while in college. He used to work at a bank full-time to pay for college and that's where he developed his interest in finance. Decided to study accounting and finance which enabled him to go into the banking and investment world. He started by working for big companies. Started his own firm about 5 years later.  Transition from formal employment into self-employment  It was a painful process for Darryl. His father had always motivated him to be an entrepreneur. Getting his first child was the first factor that pushed him to quit his formal job because he had the fear of losing his job while having so many personal responsibilities. A series of other difficulties eventually led him to go into entrepreneurship and despite the challenges he faced in the beginning, he persevered until he achieved success. His faith in God played a major role in his success to date.  Working on his new business  Working in the corporate world taught him how to create a habit of excellence. He used to do aggressive cold calling coupled with direct marketing and they helped him achieve solid sales leads which turned into long term clients. He applied the same to his new business and it helped him achieve sales while also maintaining his previous clients.  Getting the first set of clients  He engaged in a lot of networking which helped him get a fresh list of clients after losing all the previous clients he had when starting out. One of the people he met at a networking event appreciated Darryl's level of integrity in his work, which led to Darryl being endorsed by Dave Ramsey. That endorsement became the new catalyst to his growth. He started getting 100 referrals per month from Dave Ramsey. Still works with Dave's team to date.  Working towards getting endorsed  Darryl had a high degree of authenticity in his work and that naturally led to influential people endorsing his work.  Tip: Doing what you are passionate about will eventually make you visible in your area of business and if you maintain a high level of integrity and professionalism in your work, the right people will endorse and validate your work.  3 minute talk to 30,000 people  Darryl was offered an opportunity by his pastor to talk to his 30,000 strong congregation about financial and investment management. He enjoyed making the talk.  Growing the business  PAX Financial currently has 18 employees and more than 2,000 clients. They

On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Rick Martinez, who is a veteran registered nurse, writer, and successful entrepreneur. Rick has been named by San Antonio Business Journal as one of the city's 40 under 40. His first company was named as one of the US Small Business Administration's top 100 companies.  During the show, we discuss purpose hacking, the ‘bink' moment, life pivots, and what Rick learned from his recent book launch.    Main Questions Asked: -       How did you come to decide you wanted to help people discover their purpose in life? -       Do people find their purpose in life through the work that they do? -       What do you mean by the ‘bink' moment? -       How is Project Bink structured, and what does the business look like? -       What is a purpose hack? -       Tell us about the marketing for Project Bink, Purpose Hack, and Life Pivot. -       What were some of the successes and lessons learned from your book launch?   Key Lessons Learned: Have you found your purpose in life? Do you recognize those moments that steer you towards it?   Purpose -       Finding one's purposes is often perceived as finding the meaning of life. Purpose is simply living the life of deeper meaning. -       Rather than going through imposter syndrome and thinking ‘Who am I?' instead make the choice of thinking ‘Why not me!' and change the action to ‘I'm going to do these things.' -       Purpose isn't a thing we have to go and find; it is something that is within and grows within us. -       We shouldn't go chasing after our purpose, but rather chase the things that mean the most to us.  -       Purpose doesn't have an age limitation. There are younger people with their lives together, and older people who don't. -       You don't have to be a monk or climb mountains to find meaning in your life. -       Purpose isn't about one thing, but about taking many things that fulfill us and make us whole.   The Bink Moment -       This is essentially an “ah-ha” moment when you discover the purpose and reason for wholeness in life and the things that fulfill you.  -       Involves asking the question ‘What does this mean' during critical and pivotal life moments. -       Rick offers a simple systematic way for people to find their ‘bink moment' and purpose quicker.   Purpose Hacking -       Hacking is a way to do the things in your life that matter the most to you. -       This is about a bigger picture and a way to create more meaning and value in your life. -       People are into the ‘hacking' lifestyle because they want to serve something bigger and greater than they are.   Marketing & the Book Launch -       Rick approached his marketing efforts from a startup perspective and built a website, established a presence, and added an opt-ins, and pop-ups to capture leads to build the list. -       The biggest mistake in his book launch was taking too long to get the book out, which was two years. -       The book is self-published straight to Amazon and had a release that was pushed out to friends and people within the circle of influence for a free launch copy. -       It's important to decide on the goal of your book. Is it about being a bestseller or promoting the message? -       The strategy was to allow people to get the book for free by using landing pages in order to promote the message.  -       Being a bestseller is an ego boost, but if your book is a marketing tool for your business, then it's about getting into the hands of potential clients.   Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer. Coming from a family that struggled financially and carrying a debt load that was equal to his income, Darryl had an overwhelming fear of failure and an attitude of “I’m going to work my way out of this.” He soon realized, however, that he needed to trust God with every area of his life and stop trying to work apart from Him in order to experience not only success, but also freedom from fear and worry. “Nearly everyone is living in fear and worry. The only solution to this…is abiding in [Jesus…] You can find other alternatives that might pacify, whether it’s a funny comedy show or substances, but it only pacifies. The only source for overcoming fear and worry is moment-by-moment dependence on Him in everything that we do in our lives.” --Darryl Lyons As Darryl achieved success and received recognition in his community of San Antonio, other entrepreneurs began calling him for advice. He decided to hold workshops to teach what entrepreneurs needed to know. As his classes repeatedly filled up, he looked at the contents he had put together and realized that he had the makings of a book. “Small Business, Big Pressure” will teach you to step out in faith as an entrepreneur and stand up as a leader. “There’s a whole group of people out there that are hungry for God. I want us to have confidence and go out there and be ourselves in Him and just say, “Look, we’re Christians and I’m not going to apologize for it. And you’ll find out how many people will stand beside you in that journey.” –Darryl Lyons You Will Learn Why work ethic is not the most important factor in your success The vital importance of giving God your “first fruits” How living without fear will attract customers and retain employees How to give up trying to control every situation and “let God be God” How to live in moment-by-moment dependence on God How to abide in Christ in every phase of your business Resources Small Business, Big Pressure: A Faith-Based Approach to Guide the Ambitious Entrepreneur by Darryl Lyons 30 Small Business Startup Mistakes - FREE download for you as a special gift from Darryl Small Business, Big Pressure website  Bio CEO and co-founder of the PAX Financial Group, Darryl Lyons has been a licensed professional in the financial services industry since 1999.
