Melinda Maria Spigel is the founder and Chief Creative Officer of Melinda Maria Jewelry, a leading e-commerce jewelry brand. From a young age, Melinda was drawn to creativity and jewelry, spending hours sketching and experimenting with designs. What began as a childhood passion quickly evolved into something bigger when, at 23, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams. She started selling her handmade pieces out of a Starbucks, sometimes making $1,000 a day, until her bold, statement designs began catching the eyes of stylists and celebrities. That early momentum would eventually grow into a namesake brand worn by icons like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift, and featured in major retailers around the world. In this week's episode, Melinda opens up about the real journey behind the brand: how she overcame fear of judgment, why authenticity is her biggest competitive edge, and what it really took to build a company from scratch while raising three kids. We talk about the hustle of her early days, the grassroots strategies that got her into celebrity hands, the lessons she learned navigating challenges during key growth stages, and how passion continues to fuel her resilience and long-term success. Melinda's story is a masterclass in resilience, resourcefulness, and creativity, and a reminder that true success isn't about a perfect path but about showing up with courage, again and again. In this episode, we'll talk to Melinda about:* Why authenticity is the foundation of brand-building. In this episode, Lynn Spigel, Chair of Screen Cultures in the Department of Radio/TV/Film at Northwestern University, and our hosts discuss her research and new book, TV Snapshots: An Archive of Everyday Life, on snapshot technology and TV history. While working on a research grant for smart houses, Lynn began researching the ways in which everyday people pose with computers and TV sets. From there, she went on a journey of scouring thrift stores, vintage shops, and Ebay for more examples of these home photos of people posing with their televisions. According to her, these photos are not just evidence of conspicuous consumption but rather a myriad of other things: a backdrop of self-presentation, an erotic stage, a portal object, etc. These snapshots combine the snapshot camera and the television, two dominant technologies of middle and working class life during the mid-twentieth century, and expose a new counterhistory or countermemory of television that is more diverse and inclusive than we are used to seeing. To view these photos or upload your own examples, visit Lynn's website, tvalbum.com. Selected photos are also available on this episode's webpage.A full transcript of this episode will be available soon!Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! Anyone who works in healthcare knows patients struggle with anxiety and worry and fear. Yet it's easy to get so caught up in our day-to-day work, with all its stress and chaos, that we can lose sight of this truth—as well as the fact that employees, too, can be fearful. In this episode, Mindy G. Spigel, RN, MSN, CPXP—author of the new book There's a Snake on My Head! Strategies for Alleviating Fear and Anxiety in Healthcare for Patients, Families AND Healthcare Teams—explores this critical subject. Mindy says when we talk to a patient, we need to imagine they have a snake on their head. That snake is fear. If we can't get rid of the snake first, how will they hear anything we say? They won't—and compliance and outcomes will suffer. She says in her research study interviewing families about their fears and how to reduce them, the findings boiled down to this: “Keep me informed, keep me safe, keep me comfortable.” She hopes shining a light on this topic will not only lead to better outcomes, it will help healthcare workers reconnect to their purpose. In this episode, you'll learn:- Why acknowledging and reducing fears in both patients and employees matters- How we can train ourselves to see the “snakes” on people's heads-Impactful steps we can take to help reduce those fears and worries- How to also reduce anxiety for employees (including new hires and transitions in leadership)- Why we're still playing catch-up after COVID-19—and how we can rebuild camaraderie, trust, and those critical networks and learning environments Mindy G. Spigel, RN, MSN, CPXP, is a nurse with over 40 years of experience in healthcare, working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Mindy has taught in academic and clinical settings and has been honored to speak at numerous national, state, and local conferences.Contact Mindy Spigel, RN, MSM, CPXPmgspigel@gmail.comhttps://mindyspigel.com • Mindy's New Book: There's a Snake on My Head!
