"You, sir, are supposed to be charming." We watched "Ever After: A Cinderella Story" and we do NOT need to be rescued thank you very much! Drew Barrymore is having a bit of a career renaissance these days with her super charming, super viral (personal space anyone?) talk show, but we're taking it back with this one. Twenty Five Years to be exact! It was 1998 and Hollywood was still experiencing a contact high from Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and we wanted more retellings of the classics through a 90's lens! More young Hollywood It-Girls! More alternative rock songs in the trailer! But we'll be darned if this movie doesn't actually work. Drew is really giving it her all as Danielle, the soot-faced orphan doomed to live out her days serving her Wicked Stepmother and Stepsisters, but we need to talk about Anjelica Huston absolutely eating as The Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent - the Wicked Stepmother. Drew knew what a moment it would be for the Barrymore and Huston acting dynasties to be together for this one, so she called Anjelica herself begging her to take the role. And we as movie-goers are forever in her debt. We also get to see Melanie Lynskey (herself having a moment lately) in an early American film role and she's so adorable we can't even stand it. Listen, we all know the story of what could have been with Dougray Scott's (Prince Henry) career (google it) but in what could have been a thankless role, he really came to play and it shows he's having a good time. This movie is straight up fun - it's a Cinderalla story where historical Leonardo da Vinci plays the Fairy godmother. Honestly, work. INSTAGRAM instagram.com/vanexfavors YOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/vanexfavors Music https://sng.to/vanex My dad passed away 2 weeks ago. Me, my wife 'Candace' and my daughter (16) 'Shiloh' and her stepsisters (19) & (17) flew to my hometown to attend the funeral. After that we got 2 hotel rooms (one for me and Candace, one for the girls). While I was in the room, I got a call from Shiloh at 11pm crying and sounded like she was arguing with her stepsisters. I asked what the matter was and she told me that her stepsisters insisted that she sleep on the floor (there were one large bed in the room and there was enough space for all 3 girls to sleep on). I asked why and she said she didn't know. I went to see what the issue was and talked with my stepdaughters about it. They kept talking but didn't really explain why they told her to sleep on the floor. They just shrugged and said "It's better this way...we're more comfortable this way..". I told Shiloh to grab her things and when one of my stepdaughters asked where we were going, I told her I was booking her a hotel room. Both looked upset but didn't say anything but they must've called their mom because she was awake when I got back and started arguing with me about giving Shiloh an entire hotel room for herself. I explained why I did it but she said I wasted money and that Shiloh could've sucked it up for one night on the floor. I called her unreasonable for saying this but she told me I showed the girls that I'm "playing favorites" and made my stepdaughters share a room while I gave my daughter and entire room for herself. We went home and Candace is still bringing it up saying I mishandled this. She even pointed out how my stepdaughters are upset since they're not speaking to me. ETA It was Candace who got a room for the 3 girls as to not stir any drama and save money. She was in charge of hotel reservation since I was emotionaly distressed. Also. Candace did NOT expect Shiloh to sleep on the floor. She wanted all 3 girls to share the bed. ETA#2 For those that are calling me an ah for giving my daughter her name. Her mom did that and she's deceased so please let's not focus on that. And also, I've known my stepdaughters since they were little. We're pretty much family and Candace is a sahm but I give her full access to my money since this stuff was already discussed before handed. Pretty much everything was. https://www.reddit.com/top/?t=week --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/vanex/support

Frank Murphy's friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth recently starred in Always Patsy Cline at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Patsy became afraid of car rides after a crash in 1961. She started taking a small plane to gigs and died in a plane crash in 1963. Frank saw a microphone Patsy used at WINC radio in Winchester, Virginia. Frank chatted with Laura Beth when they were both in the audience for the Tennessee Valley Players production of Something Rotten! at the Ula Love Doughty Carousel Theatre, next door to the Clarence Brown Theatre. The Carousel will soon be torn down and rebuilt. Frank's cousin Terry Hatton was a legendary FDNY captain. Terry used to visit all the old theatres in Times Square to memorize their floor plans and exits. One time Terry swung from a rope high above Times Square to secure a billboard that was falling. The mayor made a joke about “Captain man-Hatton” being as good as Spider-Man. Laura Beth played Emily Osborn in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway. Laura describes the flying techniques in the show. She says it is still bad luck to whistle in a theatre because in the days before electronic headsets, stagehands would use whistles to signal when to raise or lower curtains and set pieces. If you whistle in a theatre, you could get hit with something from above. Frank also saw Mary Costa at the production of Something Rotten! Mary is known for providing the voice of Aurora in the animated Sleeping Beauty. Frank and his family sat behind a ten-year-old girl and her family. Frank urged the family to go say hi to Mary Costa before the play started. Mary invited the girl to sit on her lap for a picture. Frank and Laura Beth knew several people in the Something Rotten! cast, including Jessica Magers-Rankin, who played Bea. Laura Beth was in a cabaret-style show with Jessica. Frank recalls that he attended the show and met Laura Beth for the first time. Frank once read an article about the short supply of men in community theatre. Laura Beth says the trope extends to high school theatre, with girls auditioning for the lead roles but the theatre teacher pulling a boy out of track & field practice to play the male lead. Laura Beth liked the minimalist style of the Something Rotten! production. She said that they used simple boxes and chairs as sets in Shakespeare's day. Frank saw a production of Murder on the Orient Express at Theatre Knoxville Downtown that used benches to represent the parts of the train. Laura Beth knows the students who built the benches. Frank and his wife took their grandson Artie to the Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge on Saturday. Frank had a conversation with someone from the Oak Ridge seed library. You take seeds to grow vegetables and then harvest your seeds to bring back to the library. Frank says many of the festival attendees reminded him of people about five to ten years older than him and listened to rock music from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Frank missed out on that era of music because his parents listened to opera and classical music. They also listened to talk radio shows like Rambling with Gambling and The Arlene Francis Show on WOR-AM. Laura Beth points out that her daughter can access music from all eras on Spotify. Frank's grandson is similar. Artie's playlist has classic rock songs, video game songs, and John Williams movie themes. Laura Beth says the first play that “got hold of her” was Peter Pan. The title role is traditionally played by a woman. Frank and Laura Beth both had the soundtrack of the Peter Pan production starring Mary Martin. Laura Beth used to use the “Stepsisters' Lament” from Cinderella as her audition song. This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Internal Leverage is an exploration into the inner game of business. Through interviews and anecdotes, we'll dive deep into the psychology, performance strategies, and daily routines of highly successful game changers and find out what gives them internal leverage. In this new episode of the Internal Leverage Podcast, mindset and performance coach Abraham Heisler sits in with writer and producer Chuck Hayward to talk about dauntless determination to win in life. Essential points covered in this episode: Listen to Chuck's story of his arduous journey as a writer and achieving success in one of the most challenging industries. Adapt the mindset that there is no Plan B. To succeed, look fear in the face and burn your ships. It takes a lot of getting beat down when you're trying to impress people because they can smell your desperation. And that's not what people are looking for in most situations, specifically in TV and film, because it's a very heat-driven industry. Successful people are not afraid to leverage their unique identity and authentic voice to achieve their purpose and create impact. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About Chuck Hayward Chuck Hayward writes things. A lot. And sometimes he actually writes them well. His long list of masterpieces include his works with Netflix's Dear White People, Disney+'s WandaVision, ABC's Mixed-Ish, or Showtime's Flatbush Misdemeanors. Check out the movies he's written, Netflix's Step Sisters, the indie film Fat Camp; and the upcoming movies, Glow Up, and the remake of the 90's cult classic, Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead. Whether it is meet-and-greets or character dining. We have been to Walt Disney World 5 times since Emily was born, so I have acquired quite the list of great character interactions.
