This week, Nathan talks about that dependable spring blooming perennial, the peony. Then, he gives some tips on installing a dry river bed as a critical feature to your landscape.

We are a small wine brand named after an eclectic group of 1930s metropolitan refugees known as the Dunites who settled the beach dunes of San Luis Obispo county. This group proudly described themselves as a collection of free thinkers, artists, nudists, and poets. Together they shared meals, cohabited a mutual gathering place, philosophized, dissented, and generally allowed one another to live and express themselves freely outside of the cultural norms of the time.Dunites Wine Co. draws inspiration for this project from the remote beauty of the coastal dunes and the progressive ambition of the Dunites to aspire towards a clear goal; to produce pure and elegant wines that respect the coastal influence of vineyard sites located on the uplifted seafloor and ancient sand dunes of the SLO Coast. Combining diverse vineyard sites and meticulous farming with traditional techniques in the cellar allow for these small production wines to express the distinct characteristics of their sites. We are a husband - wife team who combine our experiences to craft these wines. Together we have worked for over a dozen wineries and vineyards around the world where the people, cultures, and wines have influenced our approach to growing and making wine. Rachel Eck holds a degree in Viticulture from Cal Poly SLO and gained experience working under iconic producers such as Stephen Ross, Paul Lato, and Te Kairanga. Rachel is a licensed Pest Control Advisor and manages our tasting room in downtown SLO. Tyler Eck followed a degree from UCSB with a Viticulture and Oenology degree from Lincoln University in New Zealand. His travels led to working for several pioneering wineries including Dry River, Peay Vineyards, Stefano Lubiana, and Domaine Francois Villard. Since 2014 Tyler has been the Associate Winemaker for Fess Parker Winery. We live in Pismo Beach, with our black lab Cassidy, where we are only a few miles drive from the vineyards we work with.

PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about the canonical playlist that's part of every Independence Day fireworks display, the time Scott accidentally hit Lee Greenwood in the face with a water balloon, and how our Patreon supporters can get the chance to get their hands on one of the very first copies of Dave Alvin's forthcoming book New Highway. PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with "Fourth of July" composer Dave Alvin on the Fourth of July! ABOUT DAVE ALVIN:Grammy-winning artist, musician, songwriter, poet, and roots music pioneer Dave Alvin launched his professional career when he and his brother Phil founded the Downey, California, based group The Blasters. Blending rockabilly and R&B, Dave became the band's primary songwriter, penning classics such as “Marie, Marie,” “American Music,” “Border Radio,” “Jubilee Train,” “Little Honey,” “Dark Night,” and “Long White Cadillac,” which later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam. After a brief stint as a member of the band X, Dave launched a solo career and continued to craft critically-acclaimed songs that defy genre, including “Fourth of July,” “Haley's Comet,” “Dry River,” “King of California,” “Abilene,” “Ashgrove,” “Harlan County Line,” “Johnny Ace is Dead,” and “Downey to Lubbock,” a collaboration with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Dave's songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Little Milton, Buckwheat Zydeko, Shakin' Stevens, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, and others. Additionally, his music has been featured on a number of TV soundtracks, including Justified and The Sopranos.

Originally published on June 13, 2019. In early June 2019 I sat down in the wine library at 67 Pall Mall in London with Wilco. We talked about how he ended up in New Zealand, the wines he makes at Dry River, reductiveness in wine making, low oxygenation and phenolic compounds, his views on what sustainability means in the vineyard and winery, and on New Zealand and sustainability in wine, in general. Enjoy.
