Lee tries to start off 2025 on a positive note with a playlist from everyone's favourite Italian brother duo, Guido & Maurizio De Angelis. If you're counting, this is the fourth time Lee has done a show covering the work of the prolific brothers (search the archives on Podbean for parts 1-3), be it under their names, Oliver Onions, or some of the lesser known pseudonyms they've used over the decades. In many cases, this list features instrumental versions of songs Lee has used in previous episodes, and Lee does much less talking than in previous installments of this series. This makes for an easier episode to put together for Lee, and more music for you the listener. It's like you won a new shiny red dune buggy! --Across the Fields & Dune Buggy (Instrumental) from "Watch Out, We're Mad!" This episode welcomes Linden Thomas (University of Birmingham) and John Lunney (Law Society of Ireland) to talk us through Public Legal Education and how lawyers can have a big impact in helping the public to improve their legal literacy. The public are all bound by the law but many individuals and groups do not know how the law impacts them and interacts with their every day life.  Public Legal Education seeks to help the public improve their knowledge of, and confidence with the law, rather than providing specific advice on a specific issue.   This episode explores the detail of this important movement as well as delving into a subsection of public legal education – Street Law.   We always encourage listeners to undertake practical actions after listening to the episode.  -        Look at the Moocs hosted by the Law Society of Ireland https://www.lawsociety.ie/mooc -        Explore the Young Citizen's website https://www.youngcitizens.org/ Useful resources -        Definition of Public Legal Education on the Law Society Website. https://www.lawsociety.org.uk/campaigns/public-legal-education  -        Dr Sean Arthur's article: Street Law: Creating Tomorrow's Citizens Today  https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/lewclr19&div=41&g_sent=1&casa_token=zXZmYC7dKX0AAAAA:EfE1sg9Rvwka1t0VlvUWz-okEwQjjMv-KNX2liZzIAFZlvR74Mzes39cjR1IT1mJvyvXx6vY&collection=journals -        The Kids Aren't Alright: The 4 Factors Driving a Dangerous Detachment from Democracy. https://www.ukonward.com/reports/the-kids-arent-alright-democracy/ -        Street Law Inc. https://streetlaw.org/

Welcome to the debut episode of this new Pulse Check series, "After Further Consideration," a DEI-focused series where hosts Dr. Cody Nielsen and Dr. Tomika Ferguson invite experienced change leaders both within and beyond higher education into conversations focused on responsive leadership, addressing campus crises, navigating institutional shifts, and fostering sustainable change all through the lens of equity and inclusion. Key Takeaways from Part 1:Over the past three decades, the role of the college president has transformed dramatically, necessitating extended tenures to lead impactful change in higher education. Leaders must decisively affirm their commitments to equity and inclusion to reshape the institutional culture despite opposition. Becoming an equity leader demands a sustained, long-term commitment. Prioritizing self-care is essential for leaders to prevent burnout. While shifting to an inclusive institutional culture requires buy-in from faculty, trustees, administrators, alumni, and students, it demands unwavering leadership from the president.Guest Name: Pat McGuire Guest LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/patricia-mcguire-4b291510Guets Bio: Patricia McGuire has been president of Trinity since 1989.  Previously, she was the assistant dean for development and external affairs at Georgetown University Law Center where she was also an adjunct professor of law.  She began her career after law school as the project director for the Street Law clinical program at Georgetown.  President McGuire serves on a number of boards including the Consortium of Universities, Cafritz Foundation, Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Ameritas Holding Company.  Her prior board service includes the American Council on Education, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Catholic Charities DC, the Meyer Foundation, the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region, and numerous other organizations.  In 2018 she received the Association of Catholic Colleges Distinguished Service Award.  In 2016, the TIAA Institute honored President McGuire with the Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence.  In 2015 President McGuire received the Carnegie Award for Academic Leadership from the Carnegie Corporation.  In 2012 she received the Henry Paley Award from the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. This was the philosophy for how I worked through my career. I would ask, ‘How do we get the people on the local level, and put them in the decision making platforms and spaces?'”Today, Ashok works with Street Law, Inc. to leverage the power of education to empower people for justice.I learned a lot from Ashok in our conversation and took quite a few notes for my own journey. Lee is back to dig into one of his favourite film genres of all time, especially when it come to soundtracks and scores: the Italian crime/Poliziotteschi film genre. Ultra violence, lurid sex, and all sorts of musical styles abound from these films, and Lee tried hard to trim down the playlist to some of his all-time favourite tracks. So load up your guns and take the law into your own hands as society breaks down around you, in corruption and violence. Can you come out the other end clean? Who cares when the music is this great? Note: at one point Lee credits "Death Proof" instead of "Death Wish" as an influence on the genre, and, of course, he butchers Italian pronounciations left and right. But you expected that, right? I had the pleasure of meeting Selena Alonzo and I was struck by how powerful she is. While she has a more quiet demeanor than some others, her strength is evident. Her insight on the law as a University of Michigan law student and social justice work and the impact of incarceration on the people around is much needed in this ongoing discussion. Selena Alonzo was born and raised in Austin, TX. Selena became the first in her family to attend college at Amherst College in Massachusetts. She graduated with a degree in Law, Jurisprudence, Social Thought and Psychology. Throughout college, Selena began to develop an interest in social justice issues, particularly the failures of our criminal justice system. This interest led to Selena deciding to attend Michigan Law School. Despite being just a 1L, Selena established a lasting legacy at Michigan Law by helping found the First Generation Law Students organization. Her other involvement at the law school includes organizing a LawBreaks trip to assist death row appellants in California, the Unemployment Insurance and Civil-Criminal Litigation Clinics, Street Law, and MDefenders. Selena is an aspiring public defender and will spend her summer working for the Legal Aid Society's Manhattan Criminal Defense Trial Office.   To connect with Selena:   * IG: selenaalo  * email: scalonzo@umich.edu
