Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

In 1974 Mario Bava was struggling after a series of financial failures and decided to turn towards a genre completely new to him: Poliziotteschi! Adapting a crime story by Michael J. Carroll, he was almost finished filming when the producer filed for bankruptcy, leaving the film to sit on a shelf for twenty years (well after Bava's death in 1980). On this episode of WILD IN THE STREETS we take a look at the revived film RABID DOGS, which exists in FIVE different versions - most notably an unfinished workprint version and a re-edited version with new sequences filmed by Lamberto Bava retitled KIDNAPPED! Both of these films are prime examples of the Italian sub-genre, Poliziotteschi, and we dive a bit into the intense political movements behind these films, as well as what this genre represents to Italian and world cinema culture, as well as offer some... shall we say unique?... ways to pronounce the word (literally translated to "police-esque"). They discuss how they discovered these films themselves, the fortunate current (and possibly fleeting) availability of uncut copies of these important films on home media in the United States, and the huge ways they have influenced modern filmmakers (looking at you, Tarantino!). My special guest on this episode is the amazing podcaster Rod Barnett host of both the Naschycast and The Bloody Pit. We actually recorded this in January, and due to a technical issue with one of the files, it took me until this week to finally get rid of most of the static in Rod's voice, and made it fine for listening. And that's important because you're going to want to listen to this episode: we have ventured into a genre that many of you, dear listeners, have most likely not heard of, Poliziotteschi, or Italian Crime Films, which enjoyed a nice life in Grindhouse theaters. It's a sub-genre of Exploitation films that I'm eager to continue to dive into! We specifically take a look at the film Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976), directed by the infamous Ruggero Deodato. The picture is a rip roaring, ultra-violent adventure where two ruthless cops are given permission to do whatever is necessary to take down a ferocious criminal. If you like a bit of the ultra-violence, and want to learn about a genre of film that is just waiting for you to discover it, then sit back and listen to a fantastic discussion! Welcome to the next instalment of our sub-set of show exclusively looking at the Italian Collection releases of 88 Films. 88 Films have, for the last 2 years or so, have been on a tear releasing a torrent of Italian genre classics in high definition. I have been purchasing them and it should be no surprise to anyone, I have left them pretty much unwatched (what can I say...I'm a compulsive collector). In order to watch the movies I buy, and of course create some quality content for you all Under the Stairs, I will be running through each of the movies on this bonus series between 1-2 movies a month depending on the TPUTS schedule. So strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of alleged plagiarism, zombies, gore, rape, genital mutilation, sexism, revenge, gialli, cops and robbers, cannibalism, sci fi & more bush and titties than an annual subscription to Penthouse magazine. Disc 11 in the collection is rare entry in the Poliziotteschi sub-genre of Italian cinema, rare in that it is directed by the man synonymous with the depravity of cannibalism in celluloid, Ruggero Deodato. Live Like A Cop Die Like A Man (1976) might have been his only police crime thriller but that doesn't mean that the blueprints of Deodato's future exploits aren't bubbling behind the surface. The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It Live Like A Cop Die Like A Man Duncan: 3.5 Up next on the Italian Collection Series is Disc 12 - Man From Deep River (1972). Lee is back to dig into one of his favourite film genres of all time, especially when it come to soundtracks and scores: the Italian crime/Poliziotteschi film genre. Ultra violence, lurid sex, and all sorts of musical styles abound from these films, and Lee tried hard to trim down the playlist to some of his all-time favourite tracks. So load up your guns and take the law into your own hands as society breaks down around you, in corruption and violence. Can you come out the other end clean? Who cares when the music is this great? Note: at one point Lee credits "Death Proof" instead of "Death Wish" as an influence on the genre, and, of course, he butchers Italian pronounciations left and right. But you expected that, right? Lee and Daniel get closer to the end of this extend look at crime films by checking out two more Poliziotteschi films. First-up, they look at the mostly forgotten slow-burn from Romolo Guerrieri, "The Police Serve the Citizens?" (1973). Then they check out the action-packed Enzo G. Castellari film, "The Heroin Busters" (1977). Much of the talk of the latter surrounds Fabio Testi's amazing wardrobe and how the British have sex. Also: does your motorcycle have airbags? You might wish it did after listening to this conversation. What they've watched as of late, and listener comments are also covered. "The Police Serve the Citizens?"
