Shoot us a Text.Today, Paul and Kyle are coming to you live on location from Paul's office! We're talking about how Group 1 grew in 2024 through $1.3B in acquisitions, a new face on the top 5 best-selling EVs and how grassroots is trying to take Tesla down.Show Notes with links:Group 1 Automotive made waves in 2024, dropping $1.3 billion to acquire 68 dealerships across the U.S. and U.K. The move adds $3.9 billion in annual revenue and solidifies the company's aggressive expansion strategy. The acquisitions spanned six major deals from Southern California to London.Major brands acquired include Lexus, Honda, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Porsche, Land Rover, and Audi.A key purchase was the $517 million acquisition of Inchcape's 54 U.K. stores, adding $2.7 billion in revenue. The company also sold off select U.S. dealerships, including a Buick-GMC store in Massachusetts and a Subaru dealership in New York.CEO Daryl Kenningham: “Our ability to acquire outstanding brands in desirable markets is because we perform well on the OEM eligibility metrics.”After a rocky 2024, the Volkswagen ID.4 is making a triumphant comeback. Following production halts due to a recall, sales of the electric SUV are now skyrocketing, making it the third best-selling EV in the U.S. last month.VW sold 4,979 ID.4s in January 2025, marking a 653% increase from the previous year. The ID.4 now ranks #3 in U.S. EV sales, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.The top five best-selling EVs—Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, VW ID.4, Tesla Cybertruck, and Honda Prologue—accounted for 54% of total EV sales.Over 102,200 EVs were sold in the U.S. in January, up 30% year-over-year.VW is offering aggressive discounts on 2024 models, with leases as low as $189/month.Tesla showrooms across the U.S. are becoming flashpoints for protests as demonstrators rally against Elon Musk's actions. The #TeslaTakedown movement has gained traction, with over 65 events scheduled through March.Protesters in New York's Meatpacking District hurled insults at passing Teslas, calling them “uncool” and “major loser” cars. The movement took off on Bluesky, a social media competitor to Musk's X, and has since gone viral.Demonstrations started in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, California, and Colorado, but have now spread internationally. The protests lack a central leader but have been amplified by legislative advocacy groups like Indivisible and Rise and Resist.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

“White space” is hard to find in the U.S. car market, but Hyundai found a niche in 2021 when it introduced the Santa Cruz compact pickup truck. Now, four years down the road, the Santa Cruz remains a standout, blending a five-passenger crossover interior with the practicality of an open pickup truck bed. Designed for buyers seeking the utility of a truck without the bulk, it competes directly with the Ford Maverick, although the two small trucks differ markedly in persona. For 2025, the Santa Cruz features refreshed interiors, a sleek curved infotainment display, and a rugged XRT trim with all-terrain tires. Available in five trims ranging from the base SE to the luxurious Limited, which Host Jack Nerad tested for the week. With its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and advanced safety systems, the likable little truck reminded Nerad of a sports sedan. He'll have a full report in this episode. On the other coast, Co-Host Chris Teague slipp[ed behind the wheel of the 2025 Honda Prologue battery-electric SUV. Teague had a strong sense of deja vue since he owns a 2024 version., He'll offer his opinions on the vehicle based on his lengthy exposure in this edition. Our guest this week is one of the most heralded automotive journalists of all time. Ted West has won multiple Ken Purdy awards for excellence in auto journalism, and he has put his considerable talents to writing what many have called the best racing novel of all time. Jack Nerad will talk with him about that, his entry into the world of auto writing, and his most recent literary endeavors. In the news this week, car sales are plodding along, and electric car sales are plodding right along with them. We'll give you the details and share our thoughts about how this year will end for carmakers the world over coming up. Two major global brands have reaffirmed their commitment to battery-electric vehicles this week. We'll tell you who they are and what they are doing about it. Their efforts could mean a bargain buy for you. Jeep has just pulled the wraps off a new military-inspired Jeep Wrangler, and it channels the vibe — if not the size — of the original World War II vintage Jeep. We'll share the details with you. Jaguar has decided to rebrand itself as it moves forward with its battery-electric vehicle plans, and the new ad campaign it spawned has sparked significant controversy. We'll give you our takes on this minor tempest. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us, and don't forget to look for new content on our YouTube and Rumble channels. Jill is back in studio this week. The hosts opened the show discussing Jill's recent travels, and noting that she had driven the all-new Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric minivan to the studio. A full review of that vehicle is due in a week or two. Tom shared an interesting experience. A fellow health-club member of Tom's sought him out to share her terrible rental-car story. She had been upgraded to a surprising crossover which she found entirely unsatisfactory. Jill reviewed the new Honda Prologue EV crossover. The Prologue is showing surprising early sales. Jill explains why. In the second segment Jill and Tom are joined by Chip Lupo of WalletHub. Chip shared details of WalletHub's recent 2024 Best & Worst cities to Drive in study. The study included data not only on traffic congestion, but vehicle operating costs and commute times as well. Chicago and Detroit, we have bad news for you. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Toms “More Car Sales!” quiz, which focused on the first three quarters of 2024. Finally, Tom lamented the likely discontinuation of the federal EV tax credit, and briefly discussed the possible ramifications of the move. Jill and Tom also discussed recently released pricing for the new 2025 Cadillac Vistiq 3-row crossover.
On today's informative episode of Quick Charge, we've got Honda engineers Jason Hwang and Emilio Sanchez to talk us through some of the things that make the GM Ultium-based Honda Prologue EV feel like a real Honda, and why that matters. Jason and Emilio talk about some of the choices they made to make the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX feel different from its GM-branded cousins, and explain why this was much more than a case of badge-engineering. Give it a listen, then let us know what you think of the Prologue and ZDX in the comments. The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid is all that flash, but after testing it this week, we think consumers will really respond to its combination of versatility, fun-to-drive, and incredible fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency says it has a range of more than 600 miles on a tankful of gas. At the same time, Host Jack Nerad found it delivered excellent performance with more brio than you might expect. With a fresh design and a shift to hybrid-only powertrains, it now offers two hybrid configurations: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. We tested the 225-horsepower front-drive version and found that its acceleration more than met expectations. There's just something about electric motors' instant torque. Nerad will have a full report. More than 2,000 miles away, Co-Host Chris Teague was putting the battery-electric Volvo C40 Recharge through his test regimen. There is something perfect about the combination of fall colors, the Atlantic Coast, and the Volvo C40 recharge, and Teague will give us his conclusions. In the news this week, with somewhat curious timing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally opened an official investigation into Tesla and its Full Self-Driving software after years of studying the issue. Hmmm. What has changed? At the same time, Dodge assures us that the Hemi-V8 isn't dead yet. Despite its recent troubles, it has just proven this by introducing an all-new Durango SRT special edition. We'll have the details. Sorry, potential car buyers — the prime interest rate is down, but car affordability remains a big challenge, according to a just-released report from Cox Automotive/Moody's Analytics. We'll have more on that coming up. Kia has just introduced a new accessory made from ocean waste. We'll tell you more about that very appealing new product and share our thoughts. This week, our special guest is our very own Co-Host, Chris Teague. He'll tell us about his recent experience with his new Honda Prologue battery-electric SUV and the home charging system he recently had installed. If you are considering purchasing an EV, listen up for that segment. So we have a lot of show for you this week. 240824 - Honda Prologue by Derrière le Volant
This week the 2024 Honda Prologue, a vehicle the show has barely mentioned, gets the full review from Sami, as he dissects what this "Honda by GM" is capable of, and whether it's relevant or not in this market. Plus he details what parts are GM and what parts are actually Honda. Then Benjamin shares his thoughts on the recently refreshed 2024 Cadillac XT4, a luxury compact crossover with an eye catching price tag. But Benjamin notes that his tester had a few issues that may have soured his entire experience. The guys wrap up with Toyota and how many cars they sell compared to how many are actually good. They also mention the brands dipping reliability scores, and whether Toyota is cashing in on the reputation they built over the years. It's an enlightening conversation that gets into the heads of our hosts, so don't miss it! Thanks for listening.

For millions of people across the country, a week on a lake is a dream vacation. This year Host Jack Nerad and his family found that out firsthand as they drove a 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro to Cedar Creek Lake south of Dallas for some serious driving and welcome R and R. As the Nerads discovered, the Sequoia had the goods to offer dual duty as both a serious off-roader and a practical family hauler. The third-generation Sequoia three-row SUV delivered luxurious comfort, impressive technology and exceptional convenience features. The twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain offers plenty of acceleration with 437 horsepower and a whopping 583 pound-feet of torque. Towing a big boat is child's play with an impressive 9,520-pound maximum towing capacity. For the stock-up stop at the big box store, the Sequoia offers a cavernous cargo area and an innovative multi-level cargo system. When it comes to all-terrain capability, the TRD Pro's part-time four-wheel-drive system includes a transfer case, controlled via a button on the center console, to select between 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low. The multi-link rear and available air suspensions keep the vehicle in firm control. Nerad will recount more of his family's adventures as the road tests unroll. In our second road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will discuss his family's recent purchase, the 2024 Honda Prologue. Making the big leap into the electric vehicle lifestyle, the Teague family has already experienced the joys and travails of battery power. Teague will share far more in this episode. Our special guest is George Baker, General Motors' Vehicle Security Lead. He will discuss ways to avoid becoming a car theft victim. Car theft is on the rise across the country, so you'll want to hear what he has to say. In the news, Tesla's Elon Musk has just hinted that the debut of the carmaker's robotaxi will be delayed. We'll tell you why and what all means coming up. General Motors CEO Mary Barra has just revealed that her company's goal of producing one million electric vehicles in North America is, in her words, “uncertain.” We'll have the details and our thoughts. Meanwhile, hundreds of MINIs are scurrying across the western United States this weekend, and we”ll tell you all about that. Also in the news, Consumer Reports has released its list of the Best Electric Vehicles, and we'll tell you about the surprising top-rated car and other surprises on the list with, of course, our comments. So we have a lot of show for you this week. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The team recently spent some quality time with three new EVs underpinned by GM's new Ultium platform: the Chevy Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Honda Prologue. How do you make the same car feel different? It's all in the execution here—despite the identical underpinnings, each one feels appreciably different than the other. Much to our surprise. Oh, and we have the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport in the garage, too. It's stick! Enjoy the show? Like, subscribe, and rate us from almost anywhere you get your podcasts! Honda has just pulled the wraps off its first dedicated battery-electric crossover SUV, and we'll have all the details about it. Our special guest this week is Jonathan Rivers, who is manager of product information at American Honda. Host Jack Nerad had the chance to sit with him for a behind-the-scenes briefing at a secret location in Southern California. Honda is basing its first all-electric SUV on a General Motors platform the Prologue shares with the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer EV. But the Prologue presents itself as a Honda through and through. A long look at a pre-production version of the crossover makes it clear that Honda designers and engineers worked hard to make it their own. The 2024 Prologue will offer the choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive. The single-motor EX and Touring trims will be front-drive, while the dual-motor EX, Touring, and Elite models are all-wheel-drive. The two-motor all-wheel-drive models will deliver 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Honda hasn't revealed the horsepower and torque ratings of the front-drive models. All Prologues will be fitted with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will offer up to 300 miles on a charge. Using GM's Ultium batteries, the Prologue can use DC fast charging at rates up to 155 kW. Honda hasn't announced charge times but it says the Prologue's battery pack can add 65 miles of range in about 10 minutes using a DC fast charger. The interior is pure Honda, including the brand's newest Google-based infotainment system. Two hot but affordable sports models take center stage in our road test segment. Co-Host Chris Teague puts the 2024 Acura Integra Type S through its paces in the challenging conditions of rural Maine. Host Jack Nerad did the same with the Toyota GR86 10th Anniversary Premium Edition in the urban jungle of Southern California. In this week's news, the fuel economy rules proposed by the Biden Administration could add $3,000 to the price of the average car by 2032, according to information just released by a growing list of carmakers fighting against the new rules. We'll have the details along with our take on the situation. About half of electric vehicle owners say they will buy a particular type of vehicle the next time they buy one. Their answers could surprise you. We'll tell you what they plan to buy in this episode. Here's another good question we'll talk about this week: Do self-driving cars pose a danger to pedestrians? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seems to think so, and we'll tell you more about their recent investigations. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com
In Podcast 310, John Davis and the MotorWeek crew talk about a few different automotive topics. Greg starts us off with his work on a brand new segment called MotorWeek's Overdrive. Then Jessica dives into the details of the recently revealed 2024 Honda Prologue while Brian chats about his time behind the wheel driving…or not actually driving Mercedes Level 3 DRIVE PILOT autonomous system. Then we have a Lightning Round about how high price tags on EVs is pushing buyers to hybrids and we have a viewer question about how to charge a plug-in hybrid.
It's a mix of combustion, electric, and digital motoring this week, starting with the million-dollar Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport. The Ford F-150 Lightning Flash is a new mid-pack trim, and we have details on the 2024 Honda Prologue electric SUV. In the gaming world, we've played Forza Motorsport which launches October 10 for PC and Xbox. Motor1 Editor-In-Chief Seyth Miersma joins to share his experience at Porsche Rennsport Reunion 7, and to partake in a Porsche cheap car challenge.
