The Snot Rocket is here! This week on Tuned In, we welcome Brett Lasala, the owner, builder, and driver of 2024's Sick Week-winning Mustang, Snot Rocket. In this episode, we find out what it takes to secure the outright win at a drive-and-drag competition like Sick Week, how he's extracted over 3000hp from his Coyote V8, why he prefers Ford machinery, and a whole lot more.Use “BRETT50” to get 50% OFF our HPA Practical Engine Building Course: https://hpcdmy.co/practicalenginebEver since trading an old washing machine for his first car as a teenager, Brett Lasala has been obsessed with making vehicles go faster. This led to a lifelong career in the automotive industry, first learning the ropes through local shops, then becoming an accomplished Mercedes Benz tech specialising in AMG products, to then moving full time into the aftermarket space working with legendary companies like Real Street.Over that time, Brett has absorbed the knowledge of everyone around him, and is now in a position where he's able to perform much of the work himself — although with that said, the level of success this car has seen is only possible thanks to the wealth of talent found in the other members of the team.In this conversation, we first discuss drive and drag events like Sick Week, and the unique challenges in tuning, engine building, and setup that a brutal day-after-day race and road trip presents. Competing is one thing — but winning outright is a whole different ball game entirely. This brings us to Brett's well-known ‘Snot Rocket' bright green Ford Mustang. We dive deep into the build, discussing its beginnings all the way through to its current state as a consistent low six-second pass twin-turbo monster. Powered by Ford's Coyote motor, the Snot Rocket has allowed Brett to really get to know everything there is to know about the 5.0-litre DOHC V8. In this conversation, Brett is kind enough to share some of that knowledge with us, discussing the motor's strengths and weaknesses, how to get good results from them, and if they're actually better than GM's ubiquitous rival motor, the LS.With conversations around engine and transmission tuning strategies, CO2-regulated boost control, and much more, this episode is jam-packed with quality information!Follow Brett here:IG: @brett_lasalaYT: Brett LasalaWWW: brettlasala.comDon't forget, you can use “BRETT50” to get 50% OFF our HPA Practical Engine Building Course: https://hpcdmy.co/practicalenginebTimestamps:4:44 How did you develop an interest in cars?9:00 Where did the passion for drag racing come from?10:26 Have you got any formal qualifications?13:03 Spinning spanners on modern vehicles?15:02 Fabrication skills?18:21 What was your position at Real Street?22:05 What is a Drag and Drive event?26:15 Overview of original car29:15 Why did you start from fresh rather than further modifying the original car?32:15 Why turbos over supercharger?33:34 Coyote vs LS3? What is going on everyone. We are going to switch things up a tad. I will be at the auctions most this week and will be doing my best to talk to different people at Barrett, Bonham's and R.M. Sotheby's and figured some of these discussions were very cool. So throughout the week, I will be dropping some shorter episodes from Scottsdale and I hope you all enjoy it. In this bonus episode, I speak with car content creator extraordinaire Jeff Sutton aka Jalopy Jeff and Preston Miles about some of the things that have caught our eye that will be for sale at Barrett in particular this incredibly different 911 with an LS3 and the radical Humvee 6x6. Additionally, I speak with Krysta from GSI Fabrication and Machinery in Chandler about some of the coolest C10 pickups the world will ever see. Chevy C10's pushing 1200 horsepower.....UNBELIEVABLE. Great conversation and an excellent way to start off Scottsdale Car Week. Enjoy this bonus episode of TT. Enthusiasts never die.
The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ platform is extremely popular in the enthusiast market for plenty of reasons. It's simple, it's rear-wheel-drive, it handles, it's cheap — and there are few platforms out there that have the kind of aftermarket support that the ZN6 has. This is all to say that building one of these cars to a level where it stands above the rest takes something a little special. Cam Cocalis, this week's guest, knows this all too well, having built one of the most impressive 86s out there, and one that was good enough to find its way into the top 12 of last year's SEMA Battle of the Builders competition.Use “CAM100” to get $100 OFF our HPA Motorsport Fabrication Package: https://hpcdmy.co/fabpackagebCam has built something pretty special. It's one of the wildest ZN6s on the planet with a tube frame front and rear end, expansive cage, wild LS3 powerplant, custom cantilever suspension, and much more. The best part? Cam is only 22, and everything he's done to this car — design, fabrication, paint, wiring, and more — were skills that he learnt himself using the power of the internet. In this episode, we talk to Cam about how he became obsessed with the ZN6 platform in his teenage years (which wasn't that long ago to be fair), culminating at 17 years old when he bought this very FRS as his first car. With Cam's other main interest being art, he was able to transfer his creative side into the automotive world. We then jump into a full build breakdown on the Scion itself, in which Cam takes us through the whats, whys, and hows of the car. This machine went from your typical Rocket Bunny bagged-on-big-wheels 86 build to something worthy of SEMA glory, so there's a lot to cover.Cam also discusses wiring, design, and fabrication at length, covering his ethos behind many of the choices he made on the fabrication side, as well as a breakdown of all the tools he uses in his home garage — the total cost of which might shock you. This episode shows you that you don't have to be a professional in the industry or have the best gear in order to build top-level vehicles — you just need the right ideas, motivation, and a healthy internet connection. Let this conversation with Cam Cocalis provide the inspiration you need to get started. Dont forget, you can use “CAM100” to get $100 OFF HPA Motorsport Fabrication Package: https://hpcdmy.co/fabpackagebFollow Cam here:IG: @cam.cocalisYT: Cam Cocalis

The twin @BorgWarnerCorporate Airwerks S257 SX-E run around 13psi but there is room to go up to 20psi on occasion thanks in part to the use of an E50 flavoured ethanol fuel blend.A @haltech Elite 2500 manages the engine with an I/O expander to increase sensor inputs for a well set up and nicely prioritised engine protection strategy. This Nissan is AWD with the use of a TR6060 mated to a transfer case from a Chevy Blazer which gave Stephen an easier job of using the likes of a Y62 Patrol rear diff with that rear end seeing 70% of the torque split. The LS retains a wet sump, however, it has been modified and an Accusump is fitted for extra insurance and with essentially only @vikingperformance2574 Berserker coil-overs fitted there are plans to upgrade much of the suspension components in the future to remove excess compliance as well as a focus on weight reduction.
EP 513 "Out Of Bounds" There are few plays more exciting in sports than a Football Player breaking off a long run out of nowhere. Even better are the times they tip toe down the sideline at high speeds trying to stay inbounds. Could you imagine being that aware of your boundaries in a moment like that? Relational boundaries, and values help to protect your time, energy. and well-being . When implemented they limit the amount of negativity or stress you allow into your life. So join me LS3 on the Medicine Ball Podcast as we tackle the importance of setting boundaries. . Whether you "Exercise your mind daily" , or starting the process of being more mindful. I'll show you how to define your personal “end zones”. This will allow you to protect your time, energy, and well-being from the “fouls” of life. EP 512 "The Space Between" "Join me on the Medicine Ball podcast as I explore the often overlooked but crucial aspect of life - patience. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to lose sight of the benefits of taking a step back and being patient. Patience is more than a characteristic, but a cultivated mindset. Often it is Ego or self entitlement that pushes us forward when we may not be ready or prepared. This can be hard to see in the moment. Lacking patience can lead to blown Opportunities and relationships. It can also cause you to fumble a current opportunity being too ambitious. You may be asking how? This episode I will show how, patience can lead to greater success. Including increased happiness in both personal and professional endeavors. Tune in as I tell inspiring stories and practical tips on how to cultivate a more patient mindset. Over time (ironically) you will begin to reap the rewards it brings. It's time to take a deep dive into the power of patience and waiting on the Medicine Ball podcast with LS3."

Protecting Workers & Preventing Injuries thru SmartWatch Tech w/ Joe Hitt of GoX Labs - BRT S03 EP60 (159) 12-4-2022 What We Learned This Week GoX Labs smart watch made in a partnership with Samsung, has sensors to check your health ‘Pre-care' – preventive care can save lives, prevent injuries + save $ billions Who Pays the Bill? Business spending money on workmans comp, and cost of lost productivity Who sees the data? How the data is stored and read, employees decide who has access Joseph Hitt has a PhD in mechanical engineering, & a Background in the Military and DARPA Guests: Joseph Hitt, PhD & Co-Founder of GoX Labs https://www.goxlabs.com/ https://www.fitt-sci.net/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-hitt-ph-d-70933752 https://www.fitt-sci.net/copy-of-bio-page-bruce-floersheim Dr. Joe Hitt served 25+ years on Active Duty in the US Army, culminating his career as a DARPA program manager. He has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, with a focus in robotics. He started and managed the largest government funded wearable robotics R&D program - Warrior Web. He formulated the strategy for Squad-X, a current DARPA program designed to link human, autonomous and semi autonomous ‘members' of a small unit together in a seamless fashion for tactical operations. He is also a co-founder and current Chief Executive Officer for GoX Labs (www.goxlabs.com ) GoX Labs: Protect your team from the top three workplace injuries using Boost's AI and machine learning. Overexertion Repetitive movements of the lower back, shoulders, and ankles while using bad form are the number one cause of workplace injuries. Understand when and how often bad form is taking place. Slips, Trips, & Falls Fatigue can lead to major injuries. Be aware of onset by tracking swayed balance and cadence throughout the day. Contact/Impact Keep workers at a safe proximity from moving equipment or other workers. You choose the distance. GoX Labs was co-founded by Joe Hitt and Bruce Floersheim, two service-disabled Army officers who went on to teach at the U.S. Military Academy and become recognized experts in the field of wearable robotics. Because of injuries sustained from military service, our CEO, Joe Hitt, started the Warrior Web program at the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) in 2012 to reduce musculoskeletal injury and enhance wellness and performance. https://evonexus.org/news/new-watch-predicts-injuries-and-measures-blood-sugar/ November 21, 2019 Imagine if you could be warned about injuries before they even happen. Well, you don't have to imagine anymore because now there's a watch that alerts you before you injure yourself. Not only does the watch predict injuries, but it also measures your blood sugar levels too! When the watch links to a pod that the user wears on their collar, it sends information to a cloud provider. This cloud can predict if you are going to hurt yourself if you're lifting something the wrong way. Information about proper lifting techniques will be provided to the user beforehand, so the watch can alert them when they're out of sync. Overall, the watch can help prevent heat stress, diabetes, dehydration, and back injuries when linked to a pod that the user wears on their collar. Joe Hitt, the founder of GoX Labs, said: Ninety percent of prediabetics do not know that they are prediabetic. As for people with labor work or exercising, this is a perfect watch for them. The watch assesses your metabolic rate, how many calories you're burning, and whether you're doing “good lifts” or “bad lifts.” Hitt believes his product will prevent injuries and hours lost on the job. He explained: This is about a half a trillion dollars a year problem for the employer, talking from diabetes to workforce injury. Those premiums are going up for companies, and they're also going up for the worker. The watch not only notifies you of bad posture while heavy lifting, but it can also predict your overall risk of injury at your workplace. It also has a step counter, a heart-rate monitor and can provide CO2 data. The watch is derived from DARPA research. It measured VO2 data with 95% precision compared to clinical data, and it also predicts diabetes to 79% accuracy using machine learning. The device was recently accepted into a tech incubator at EvoNexus, allowing GoX Labs to receive expertise and funding to bring their devices to a commercial level. This watch doesn't only tell you what time it is but could save time, money, and pain. Would you wear this watch? Notes: Seg. 1 Using the smart watch to measure physiology, motion, and the brain , and this can also be done also through things like VR or AR glasses, or Haptic suits Old-school way to think about this would be test done through an echocardiogram that information is just in your doctors office, not in the cloud, so the regulated an accurate data can be dispersed using the smart watch Smart watch is the equivalent of a quad core computer inside, and measures health signals specific to you then it is stored in the cloud. Other examples of this of the Fitbit the Apple Watch the Garmin watch Military uses devices like this called IVES, they are wearable goggles, goggles connected with satellite information, as well as connected to each other this helps the military to have of the moment information in the whole team The watch can measure your blood sugar and blood pressure In the USA there are 89 million workers who can be injured, 5% injured bad daily Injury rates have stabilized in the US. Industries for this type of product are construction, warehouse workers, mining, UAV, robotics Pre-care, can prevent injuries and alert people of the potential for injury The safety industry is behind the times, not using technology to assist, akin to the 1970s where it's just observational with clipboards and no real Data Seg. 2 Joe and Bruce met at the army at West Point both instructors, also each had 20+ years in the military, They formed Fitt Scientific (in Fort Lee, VA), dealing with government logistics, working with the government, support of tech companies, Defense and space manufacturing, IT, robotics, engineering and services GoX Labs created in a tech incubator with the goal to prevent injury, preventative injuries, and safety $.80 per dollar is spent on injuries and it's a $3 trillion business that can be preventable, if you save just 10%, talking $300 billion saved in a year Watch connects with Bluetooth & sensors that clip on your shirt and access movement. Preventative care using tech, productivity increase with pre-care clients government sector There are app versions of the go X labs watch for Samsung and Apple smart watches wearables with 5G. Partner with Samsung to make the smart watch, called the Galaxy 5Pro Worldwide company with clients in Australia USA, Canada, parts of Europe 1970s safety tape programs now with a clipboard and an observer on site doing inspection-based work, and post analysis, not using data to prevent Another example of the insurance industry with actuarial info B2B workman comps needed with worker safety, GoX Labs works in the B2B sector B2C is performance based Seg. 3 GoX Labs smart watch ahs a cost of $200, plus billions of savings for business Who pays the bill? $250 billion a year is spent on workmen's comp insurance GoX Labs comes into a business, prevents injury and can cut costs, injury rates in America have leveled out as a stat, but $ costs are way up every year GoX Labs can reduce injuries by half spend a $1, & save $5 Philosophical Issues like cultural, privacy, security need to address these issues GoX Labs works with global Corp. and government, to know data is really secure. At the end of the day businesses would need unions and workers to sign on The way the data is delivered, there are no names, just an ID number worker decides who gets to see and use their data 3 Data Sheets or Dashboards to view data: individual, group, organization - need to determine where the balance is on who can view When GoX Labs first comes into a business they do an assessment, find the most serious 20% of potential injuries Seg. 4 Mass Adoption, how do you get people to wear a HealthWatch? Why? There is a need to make it personal, show value, how it can guard them or improve employee's health Example: steel company has 5 to 6% serious heat injuries, GoX labs worked with the steel company and they had zero (0) after implementing GoX Labs safety plan Risk assessment, is it worth it to you? Collect data, 60% major heat injury to staff, GoX Lab can determine with 86% accuracy Demo with product base system is the watch, can also add motion sensors, that can check for heat stress like sweat loss, dehydration, heart rate and temperature Design by Joe Hitt and Bruce Florsheim, Joe has a PhD in robotics, and he worked at DARPA he was 1 of 100 PM (program manager). DARPA is responsible for many great tech innovation like Siri voice command GPS global positioning system the Internet AI artificial intelligence Velcro solar satellites DARPA has a $3 billion / year budget, currently working on things like the brain or synthetic biology and military capabilities Seg. 5 – O/T https://www.darpa.mil/ - creating breakthrough technologies and capabilities for national security DARPA has high standards, if you don't produce they kick you out. Joe was there for four years which is a typical length. You have to bring the best ideas, an idea that can change the world and also can be implemented - discern between fantasy versus reality DARPA board is a revolving door with ex-DARPA agents on the board, usually 20 to 30 people. A candidate has to convince them of ideas through sales and marketing with real data The ROI return on investment of the entire $3 billion DARPA budget seems to work, as they create ‘moon shots', with a 20 to 30% fail rate GoX Labs funding, or strategic backers are companies that may deal in warehousing or construction or shipping, that could be high probabilities dealing with injuries. Other examples of where Go X Labs could be used could be literally anywhere in Arizona dealing with heat injuries Construction which has a low margin, so preventing injuries helps the bottom line, is very difficult to implement some safety standards with the culture The Military is a potential customer, as there is a shift in the military towards wearables (googles in the field) to protect the human dimension, and connect soldiers Robotics has had big advancements in the tech - ex: Boston robotics working on new robot called LS3 the mule https://interestingengineering.com/culture/us-army-goggles-troops-see-through-solid-walls The US Army's New Goggles Let Troops See Through Solid Walls In combat, situational awareness is key to survival. The U.S. Army is developing Integrated Augmented Vision System (IAVS) goggles for close-combat forces — which involve both mounted and dismounted troops, namely, infantry. This capability aims to send tens of thousands of new goggles into the field, which can also enable soldiers to check around corners, see in the dark, and even display digital maps and other tactical data on the goggles' lenses. Tony and Mike discuss cars that *may be bought by default for reasons beyond talent alone. You know – the trinket, the must have, the be seen in. And at the other end, cars that are bought because everyone learns in them. Yes, Nissan Micra, you. I've also looked at Citroen's new Ami while Mike has driven a converted 2CV. Fear not though, that's somewhat countered by Chevy LS and Rover V8s.All that and a seasoning of other things in this week's Car-Chum.

We went to Overland Expo West, We recorded some episodes. But more importantly, we talked about the Rebel Off Road Colorful Colorado Adventure and an LS3 swap!

On this episode of V8 Radio, Mike Clarke and Kevin Oeste reflect on the day this episode was recorded, which happened to be September 11. The whole show is not somber, however… not by any stretch, as they discuss the merits of swapping a 180 HP Olds 403 in favor of a hot 500 HP LS3 into a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. Mike also chats with Paul Weinstein at the 29th annual Indian Uprising All Pontiac Show! And this show’s trivia question is absolutely epic… especially Q-Ball’s guess!

It’s been a minute, so lots to catch up on! Trystan reveals a rebrand, Gwedd has become Ogam - he explains it’s origins in Celtic lore, and in a direct foundation in the natural world, thereby focusing attention on the values of sustainability so central to his vision.I expound on R&D developments, as I start to look for a future hardware platform to hitch the Lucie wagon to - after MiniDSP has pulled the pin on their OEM activities. There’s not much in the way of answers yet, but certainly some interesting prospects. Only problem is time, and money, and expertise in programming.Meanwhile, speakers! I want to build a compact two-way monitor, in the spirit of the LS3.5a. Modern drivers, passive crossover, vintage style cabinet, affordable, Lucie sonic signature. I think there’s a compelling argument there.Trystan’s got a new workshop, and while there’s a bit of work to do to make it shipshape, it sounds ideal.

Mike, Tom, and Tad in studio. There are a few companies that achieve a level of success that most of us can look up to. We all had engine builders, car builders, and racing organizations over the years we followed. There is no doubt that most categories of racing at the professional level get difficult to say the least. That is gross understatement when you are speaking about 24 hour endurance races. Katech met the challenge head on, and made their mark in racing history. Kevin Pranger of Katech Engines called in to give us some insight into his career at Katech and where they are today. Anyone who has ever poked in at a endurance road race on TV has seen the GM Corvettes. They have been front and center for years, and the Corvette Racing legacy really started with Katech and Kevin Pranger. In 1997 GM got together with Katech and the C5R program was born. Though the program GM and Katech secured more than a couple of high profile wins. BUT... What can Katech do for you, the regular car guy? How about CNC porting of your heads at an unbelievably low price? Or a complete spin fixture tested valve train package? Katech is the real deal, and you are not doing yourself any favors if you do not check out what they have to offer. You cannot get the level of experience they posses from many other companies. There is lots of history here and lots of information on LS3 engines that last in endurance racing. Live again next week Monday night at 7:00 PM EST on Mixlr.com. Call in number 908 751 0211. Live callers welcome, and this will be the line for giveaways. Like us on Facebook by going to Power and Speed Podcast and follow us on Twitter @powerspeedpod. Another of our infamous mystery bands start off this podcast. Who were Les Soules? We're not sure. They recorded a song in Jonesboro, Arkansas, but other than that...With a name like Spontaneous Corruption, you can bet the band's going to lay down some heavy sound. And they do. The Looking Glass of Time has all the cosmic psychedelica you could desire (maybe even more so).The Soul Spotlight shines on Roy Hines. Hines had been in the business for over a decade when he cut this fine example of early 70's soul. When he hits the chorus with the brass behind him, everything's right with the world. We finish with a test track. Jamie Holmes and some friends were asked to try out a newly-built studio at the local radio station, KBOA. They did, and promptly forgot about the track. Forty years later it was unearthed by Psych of the South and another fine example of raw garage was made available for us to enjoy.Remember, you don't need an iPod (or even an iPhone) to enjoy this podcast. The Bar Boys from Arkansas start the podcast. In the mid-60's they traveled up to Memphis to do some recording, and their song "That's the Sound of My Heart" comes from that session. I think they got their money's worth. The Soulmasters may have been from the middle part of Virginia, but their sound was pure East Coast Beach. "You Took Away the Sunshine" has sassy brass and a shuffling groove to it that's perfect for the Carolina Shag (that's a dance, y'all). We searched for some more vintage soul for the podcast, and came up with William Cummings and "Your Soul-Searching Love." A rock-steady bass and some sweet soulful singing. Score!Robin and the Hoods finish things up with "Slow Down," from a live 1968 performance.Remember, you don't need an iPod (or even an iPhone) to enjoy this podcast.
