CHAOSScast – Episode 72 In this episode, our host, Matt Germonprez, is joined by Dawn Foster from the CHAOSS Community, Sophia Vargas from Google, and Gary White from Verizon. Today, they dive into the crucial topic of assessing the viability of open source projects for adoption within organizations. The discussion covers the intricacies of evaluating project viability, the challenges of project failure, and the necessity of continuous assessments. The panelists provide valuable insights on mitigating risks, leveraging metrics, and the importance of active engagement within open source communities. This episode offers a wealth of knowledge and practical advice for navigating the world of open source software. Download this episode now to hear more! [00:02:13] The discussion begins on the importance of assessing the viability of open source projects for adoption within organizations. Gary emphasizes the need to formalize the assessment of open source project viability beyond just technical metrics, Sophia stresses the importance of rigor in evaluating open source tools due to the lower barrier to adoption, and Dawn points out the importance of context, where the viability assessment depends on how the project is used within the organization. [00:06:32] The conversation shifts to when an open source project fails or changes significantly within an organization. Dawn discusses the challenges and uncertainty companies face when an open source project becomes unusable due to license changes or discontinuation, Sophia highlights the complexities and burdens of change management when a project fails, and Gary mentions the negative impact on morale and the time-consuming nature of dealing with project failures. [00:10:55] Sophia discusses the challenges in communication between project leaders and end users, particularly when projects are consumed through third-party package managers. Gary highlights the challenge of getting project leaders and developers motivated to assess project viability and the need for data-driven metrics to facilitate communication between leadership and implementation teams. [00:13:09] Dawn stresses the importance of continuous assessments of open source project viability rather than treating it as a one-time task. [00:14:06] How do we assess if a project is good? Dawn discusses her historical approach to assessing open source projects, which included manual assessments. [00:16:31] Gary emphasizes the common practice of engineers making quick project choices without thorough assessments due to the ease of finding solutions online. [00:19:41] Sophia highlights the importance of considering how a project is used within the organization and the strategic implications of choosing open source projects, especially in large organizations. [00:21:50] Matt asks about monitoring and mitigating risks when using open source projects that may not be ideal from a viability perspective but are popular. Dawn acknowledges that project viability is not binary and can vary in terms of risk, suggesting that contributing to open source projects can mitigate risks. [00:22:56] Gary emphasizes the importance of becoming engaged and active members of open source communities to gain insight into project changes and mitigate potential risks. [00 24:15] Sophia highlights the role of metrics and monitoring in risk mitigation, mentioning that tracking certain information may not be easy but it is crucial. Dawn notes the lack of ongoing viability monitoring and suggests the need for more sophisticated approaches. [00:26:37] Gary agrees that monitoring is essential and mentions a metric called “lib year” to track the age of dependencies as an example of monitoring for open source projects, and he discusses the importance of automated recommendations within software scanning tools to help users make informed decisions about dependencies. [00:28:27] Sophia addresses the challenge of scale when dealing with many open source projects, emphasizing the need to adapt monitoring and risk mitigation approaches based on the organization's portfolio size. Value Adds (Picks) of the week: [00:30:15] Matt's pick is running in the dark on cool mornings. [00:30:33] Dawn's pick is hanging out with people when she was at the Open Source Summit in Bilbao, Spain. [00:31:03] Sophia's pick is joining an orchestra a few months ago. [00:31:41] Gary's pick is having pumpkin spice back in his life. *Panelists: * Matt Germonprez Dawn Foster Sophia Vargas Gary White Links: CHAOSS (https://chaoss.community/) CHAOSS Project Twitter (https://twitter.com/chaossproj?lang=en) CHAOSScast Podcast (https://podcast.chaoss.community/) podcast@chaoss.community (mailto:podcast@chaoss.community) Ford Foundation (https://www.fordfoundation.org/) Georg Link Twitter (https://twitter.com/georglink) Matt Germonprez Twitter (https://twitter.com/germ) Dawn Foster Twitter (https://twitter.com/geekygirldawn?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Sophia Vargas Twitter (https://twitter.com/Sophia_IV) Gary White LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/garywhitejr/?challengeId=AQEv--5HftMoBgAAAYsXL2iHfaGnQ2ZuiHoIWXTS2djLR7Egg5bea7ssesyMpR4iE0_FlSm1xuIdrRJtT9Ud3Zz2BA5RPxnaBw&submissionId=9ed5100e-879a-8c17-6615-47f9a29dcf7e&challengeSource=AgHoxRBJLKZQOgAAAYsXL6FZfLKYtxYqjuxY6Vbrgh72b_WOMwkPWsgzm3nPpY4&challegeType=AgHJBLfWjTFXCwAAAYsXL6FcCbRSfBcK6kmhaXgmTaeZZBINfv1FiwQ&memberId=AgE94SgXMMqCywAAAYsXL6FgFfWaBdkGJu0tvP9y7Vb0B8c&recognizeDevice=AgFqtB9A-OoPbAAAAYsXL6FjqkzACctkmLucd27uj2tOYXe6XdFl) libyear (https://libyear.com/#:~:text=A%20simple%20measure%20of%20software,to%2Ddate%20your%20dependencies%20are.) Guest Veethika Mishra Panelist Richard Littauer | Django Skorupa | Victory Brown Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain Open Source Design! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source with design. Learn how we, as designers, interface with open source in a sustainable way, how we integrate into different communities, and how we as coders, work with other designers. In today's episode, we are joined by guest, Veethika Mishra, a Senior Product Designer at GitLab, who shares her career path, emphasizing her move from closed to open source design work. She shares valuable insights into the design process at GitLab, which involves continuous interaction between designers and product managers and active participation of the user community. We discuss the power of open source contributions, the importance of community engagement, and the challenges faced in integrating external designers. Go ahead and download this episode now to hear more! [00:02:37] Veethika discusses her career path and transition from a secretive and proprietary organization to open source companies like Red Hat and GitLab. [00:04:25] At Red Hat, Veethika was part of the team that worked on the landing page for the developer console of OpenShift, which she greatly enjoyed. However, she wanted more engagement with the open source community, leading her to GitLab. [00:06:10] Richard asks Veethika about any potential advantages of design in a closed source environment, and she responds that she doesn't miss anything from her time in such an environment and considers some practices within these companies as absurd. [00:08:03] Django asks Veethika to talk about her research experiences, and she explains that research in an open environment provides a more accessible and authentic dataset, which benefits the product design process. [00:11:15] We hear about Veethika's GitLab's experience and the continuous learning process to ensure valuable community contributions. [00:13:29] Richard asks about the user base and the number of designers at GitLab, which Veethika reveals they have 30 million+ users, four designers in the CI/CD UX, and possible over 30 designers across the company. [00:14:05] Discussing the integration of designer input within developer teams at GitLab, Veethika describes GitLab's publicly documented product development flow. [00:16:19] Victory questions the collaboration between volunteer and employed designers at GitLab, and Veethika explains that while most designers working on different problems are GitLab employees, there are contribution guidelines for UX. She also mentions GitLab's Pajamas Design System as a more accessible and familiar space for designers to make contributions. [00:20:12] Richard asks about handling the potential backlash from unpopular design decisions. Veethika responds that there's no guaranteed way to mitigate such reactions but mentions that engaging with the community has made her a better communicator and designer. [00:21:03] We hear about the types of design contributions GitLab encourages from the community as Veethika explains the flexibility in contributions to Pajamas, and she details the process of making contributions via the Web IDE on the Pajamas website. [00:22:46] Richard asks about the barriers to open source design roles and how to overcome them. Veethika shares her opinion that the main barrier is the lack of open source ethos within many organizations. [00:25:19] Django asks if the scenario has changed over the years regarding open source design roles and Veethika notes an improvement in designer participation in open source. [00:26:45] Veethika tells us her views on Penpot Fest. [00:27:32] Veethika shares her hopes for the future of open source design, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of the socio-political impact of technological decisions and the diversification of the open source community. [00:29:21] Find out where you can follow Veethika and her work on the web. Quotes [00:10:17] “When you combine open and when you make it more visible and discoverable for others to see, these two things combined make a lot of impact.” [00:23:06] “If an organization isn't practicing open source development methods, then they have no reason having a designer that really cares for open source.” [00:23:16] “It's only when they live this ethos of openness when they realize the scale of impact this can bring to their business, not just to the community.” [00:24:51] “We can keep pointing fingers at others and not realize that it's also us who have a certain obligation towards the society and it's larger good, and open source is the only way to make it happen at this point.” [00:27:04] “Penpot Fest was really different!” [00:28:39] “We need to diversify the community that's behind open source projects.” Spotlight [00:30:07] Django's spotlight is Rory Colgan. [00:32:09] Victory's spotlight is CHAOSS Africa. [00:33:17] Richard's spotlight is LEUCHTTURM 1917 Journals. [00:33:53] Veethika's spotlight is Creative Commons. Guest Jory Burson Panelists Justin Dorfman | Alyssa Wright | Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! On this episode our special guest is Jory Burson, who is celebrating her birthday with us today! She is the Community Director of OpenJS Foundation, which is a non-profit foundation dedicated to serving the open source JavaScript ecosystem. Today, we will learn all about what Jory does as the Community Director at OpenJS, what the OpenJS Foundation is, why it was formed, and what it formed to do. Also, Jory tells us why she couldn’t imagine working on the web without MDN (Mozilla Developer Network) Web Docs and what the future holds for MDN. In addition, find out what Jory is most excited about going forward at OpenJS. Download this episode now to find out more! [00:01:20] Jory tells us about the OpenJS Foundation and what she means by “home.” [00:03:01] We learn why OpenJS was formed and what it formed to do. [00:06:25] Jory gives a brief history of how she got involved into these dynasties, also the kind of work she does at the Community Director at OpenJS. [00:10:37] Richard asks Jory what she is doing to make sure the projects have a longer life cycle and the work that they do is sustainable in the long term. [00:13:46] Jory tells us what her role is with MDN and she talks about how they restructured the organization. [00:17:27] Justin asks Jory about the future of MDN. [00:19:37] Jory talks about what they’re doing right now with working with MDN and other people to build out a shared roadmap of priorities to make MDN more useful and better than it is today. [00:22:40] Alyssa asks Jory what the balance is and most powerful partnership between these centralizing forces, these other entities, other projects, other contributors that are more distributed, and how do we relate with one another in powerful ways in order to sustain open source. [00:25:33] Jory tells us what’s she most excited about going forward at OpenJS. [00:27:19] Find out where you can follow Jory on the internet. Quotes [00:08:24] “It just blew my mind that there was that consensus of that population of people that’s that subgroup of people was going to make a choice that affected everybody.” [00:08:42] “And so at that point, from that point on, I just became very obsessed with understanding how those decisions got made and how people work together in a group to reach technical decisions and sort of how to make the human interoperability component of our technical interoperability discussions more effective.” [00:10:52] “So first, let me say out loud, that I am not convinced that the objective of any project should be to stick around as long as possible.” [00:11:49] “I think the objective is to help the project understand what is its scope, what is its end game, and how can it effectively move through different life cycles of startup phase, of growth phases, of the sustained phases, or maintenance phases.” [00:12:55] “But instead, because it was a part of the foundation, we were able to find and support new maintainers who could and did have the energy to drive that forward and how it’s really thriving.” [00:16:42] “And so, what we decided to do was find a solution and that’s what we did, we found I think a polyfill for MDN.” [00:20:24] “It’s interesting and kind of unfortunate that this process of moving the content off of the Wiki to GitHub has been a multi-year sort of project.” [00:24:51] “To understand JavaScript you have to understand the whole universe is maybe too much, so how can we and at what point is it appropriate to break those layers down so people can like not have to recreate the whole world.” Spotlight [00:28:28] Justin’s spotlight is Buffer.com [00:28:47] Alyssa’s spotlights are a shout-out to Jory’s birthday and the move to build things together to support the ecosystems. [00:30:36] Richard’s spotlight is the Boston JavaScript community of 2016, Jim Kang, Aria Stewart, Jory Burson, Boaz Sender, Gregor Martynus, Ashley Williams, and everyone else. [00:31:13] Jory’s spotlight is three people, Chris Mills at MDN, Dom at W3C, and Michal at jQuery. Combining knowledge from his impressive corporate background and extensive experience in ministry, Cliff discusses the centrality of faith in shaping his upbringing, and he shares his passion for addressing “spiritual poverty” in vulnerable communities. Cliff's upbringing in a deeply faithful family and his experience in prison ministry cause him to reflect on how black Americans for generations have leaned on faith to knock through the barriers standing in front of them. Cliff believes this history informs the great potential for faith to be the nexus of revitalization in black communities around the country today. Later, Cliff shares one pivotal moment in his life: Stepping away from his home in the south side of Chicago to attend a science fair downstate where he was inspired by many high achieving students. This set him down a path of constant self-improvement and dedication. Watch the full episode to discover the advice Cliff has for “Darryl” in 2020. What's the secret to life? Abby and Cr3y sit down to discuss what it is like to be a light worker. As artists we have an opportunity to project our light in the midst of darkness. Law of attraction is a concept discussed by top tier authors & speakers such as Abraham Hicks, Bob Proctor, & Dr. Joe Dispenza. Learning from these mentors have moved me to a more optimistic view of life. Putting my dreams as a priority. It is interesting to dive into topics that are more spiritual in context but can be applied to our individual life experience. Tuning into our emotions, paying attention to signs, and discussing new-age music are themes that shine through in this episode. Happy Holidays, stars! We got a good one for you to end off this hectic year of 2020. Even though 2020 has been one for the books, with struggles, disease, and protesting, creating A-Star with my partner in crime will be the most memorable part. Trials and tribulations have came up, but there is growth in the challenges. In this episode, I brought Clayton Brecht, my boyfriend and producer on. We reflect on starting the podcast, our equipment, editing process, a little about our Christmas celebration, as well as what is in store for A-Star next year! Within the episode we leave bits of value about the basics it takes to start a podcast. Overall, podcasting has some hurdles. Being satisfied with the content that is released while also being analytical about the episodes to come is the best way to consistently add value to your channel. We were tested this episode when we checked the video footage after recording, and there was only one minute before the camera shut off. So, Clayton and I adapted to the situation to create a visual that is still appealing to the eye. Sit back, relax, and come vibe with us as we give away some of our biggest secrets to the podcast life.
