RICEBOY SLEEPS portrays the struggles of immigration, while we embark on the search for the next stage of human evolution in CRIMES OF THE FUTURE. In VIKING, we find a reflection on the human condition in an attempt to explore Mars.  Video rental nostalgia and adolescent cinephilia come together in the film I LIKE MOVIES. With Simon Miraudo away on special assignment, Tristan Fidler and Breakfast host Pam Boland are joined by reviewer Cecilia Allen for another episode of the Movie Squad podcast! For our first review, Cecilia discusses the new Canadian drama Riceboy Sleeps directed by Anthony Shim and partly based on his own childhood experiences growing up as a Korean immigrant in Vancouver. The film is set in the 1990s and follows a Korean single mother So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon) raising her young son Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang) in the Canadian suburbs. Out in cinemas now. Then, Tristan visits The Kitchen, a British drama that is available streaming as a Netflix Original, which is co-written and co-directed by actor Daniel Kaluuya with Kibwe Tavares. Set in a future dystopia, a young orphan Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman) meets his possible father Izi (Kane Robinson) in the housing estate known as 'The Kitchen,' which is constantly raided by the police. For a bonus review, Tristan and Cecilia discuss the critically acclaimed Todd Haynes directed melodrama May December starring Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman (who also produced) and Charles Melton. Already discussed in last year's Movie Squad Boxing Day Special, Tristan hears what Cecilia thought of this dark and spiky movie about an actress (Portman) who visits a married couple to research a role in a movie, opening up old wounds about their controversial and criminal 'romance'. Out in cinemas this week! Tune into RTRFM 92.1 at 7:30am on Fridays for your regular broadcast of Movie Squad on the radio!

It's something we don't like to speak or think of happening in Canada – a country that prides itself on welcoming immigrants and embracing cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity and differences Yet, many minorities contend with racism and intolerance every day. Perhaps, you are one of those people.   In Riceboy Sleeps, Korean/Canadian Actor, Filmmaker, Writer and Producer, Anthony Shim, addresses these very issues; unlike others who have recalled the trauma of immigrating to this country in their films.   Winner of Best Original Screenplay at this year's Canadian Screen Awards, Riceboy Sleeps is a 2022 Canadian drama that Shim also edited and directed. Based in part on his own childhood, the film centers on So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon), a Korean immigrant single mother raising her teenage son Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang) after losing her husband and moving to Canada in the 1990's to give him a better life. In Canada, they fight for acceptance and respect. Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates at school, and he isn't helped by the timid, distinctly Canadian racism of his teacher and principal, who consider the family “troublesome.” At work, So-young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate with their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws So-young hasn't spoken to in many years — but might open the possibility of mutual understanding. Shim's deep engagement with his subjects sparks profound, affecting revelations. So-young's joyride in a convertible heartbreakingly underscores the emotional weight of dealing with life in a new country and raising a headstrong child alone. An offhand remark in class that ends in a fight shows how tightly wound and ill at ease Dong-hyun is — even as a teenager. Throughout the film, Shim expertly balances the very different perspectives of a boy and his mother, poignantly capturing his loneliness and frustration, her isolation, and sacrifices. It premiered in the Platform Prize program at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, and was named the winner of the program's award. It had its international premiere at the 27th Busan International Film Festival in October 2022.   I met up with Shim on the red carpet at The 2023 Canadian Screen Awards to discuss the message he wants audiences to take away from this movie. Few films have addressed the trauma of immigrating to a new country, and fewer have been as emotionally compelling as Anthony Shim's RICEBOY SLEEPS. After losing her husband, So-young (Choi Seung-yoon) relocates to Canada in the 1990s with her young son, Dong-hyun (Dohyun Noel Hwang as a child, Ethan Hwang as a teenager) in tow. There, they must fight for acceptance and respect. Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates, and he isn't helped by the timid, distinctly Canadian racism of his teacher and principal, who consider the family “troublesome.” At work, So-young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate with their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws So-young hasn't spoken to in many years — but might open up the possibility of mutual understanding. Winner of the Toronto Film Critics Association's Rogers Award for Best Canadian Film, director, writer, co-producer and editor Anthony Shim (Daughter) joins us for a conversation on the very personal inspiration for the film, getting the outstanding performances from Choi Seung-yoon, Noel Hwang and Ethan Hwang, filming in South Korea and the critical importance of Christopher Lew's masterful cinematography. In this episode of Carolyn Talks..., I had a terrific time chatting with writer, director, editor, producer and actor Anthony Shim, actress Choi Seung-yoon, and cinematographer Christopher Lew, about their film Riceboy Sleeps, which at its World Premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film FestivalCentered on young single mother So-young who moves to Vancouver, Canada with her young son Dong-young, the film takes an unflinching look at how immigrants - be they adult or child - are treated by the people surrounding them in their adopted home country. But Riceboy Sleeps isn't just a story about the immigrant expereince, it looks at the ways women give of themselves in order to provide a home and safety net for their children, as well as find community with other women, and what it means to find home again after feeling displaced.#RiceboySleepsFilm #TIFF22 #CarolynTalks #SHWHTIFF22Find more info about Anthony and the film on Instagram at @anthonyshim and @riceboysleepsfilm Follow me on Twitter and Instagram @CarrieCnh12 Hosted on Acast. Anthony Shim (Daughter) directed, wrote, edited, produced, and acted in Riceboy Sleeps, the staggering coming of age film that screens at the 2022 Vancouver International Film Festival. The dramatic feature tells the story of a South Korean immigrant and single mom, So-young, who is raising her son Dong-hyun in the Vancouver suburbs in the 1990s. So-young desperately wants to instill a sense of pride in the boy. In turn, he only wants to be considered “Canadian” in hopes of avoiding bullying at school. As Dong-hyun grows older, his frustrations over knowing nothing about his father are only exasperated when So-young introduces a surrogate patriarch into his life. A cruel twist of fate sends the pair back to South Korea, where all will be revealed about the family's history. The film was shot in Canada and South Korea and had its world premiere at the venerable 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Platform Prize. Riceboy Sleeps explores the high cost that many immigrants pay – emotionally, spiritually, physically, and culturally – while striving to build their lives in Canada's so-called multicultural utopia. In this contemplative conversation, Anthony Shim reflects on the real-life events that led to Riceboy Sleeps, and how his identity as a Korean Canadian informs his work. Here's what he has to say about the mix: "The idea came from listening to Jonsi and Alex - Boy 1904, I realized that quite a few ambient artists used the voice to create a type of auditory ambience. A few hymns have been added and a couple of more classical based choral works. These songs are not about words but the sounds of the voices and the emotions they provoke. They have been chosen for their haunting mournful beauty. I hope you enjoy them." Thanks Kevin for an excellent collection of tracks! Marc" Byrd is an American musician, writer, and producer best known as one-half of the post-rock/ambient duo Hammock, along with former Common Children band-mate Andrew Thompson.Since its formation in 2005, Hammock has released ten full-length albums and five EPs. One review of Hammock's 2013 record Oblivion Hymns remarked that Hammock "...has gone on to become one of the foremost purveyors of affecting ambient post-rock on the scene." Byrd was also involved in the 2006 ambient art project The Sleepover Series, Volume One, which featured five solo tracks written and performed by Byrd. After an impromptu invitation to give their first-ever live performance as Hammock at the overseas debut art exhibition of Riceboy Sleeps, the artistic collaboration between Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson (lead singer and guitarist of Sigur Rós) and Alex Somers (graphic designer and member of the band Parachutes), Marc and Andrew wrote brand-new songs to celebrate the occasion, an undertaking which evolved into their album, Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow (Darla Records)In December 2010, Hammock released their fourth EP titled Longest Year, a "mini-album" that was born out of the difficulty the band faced in 2010, including the near-total destruction of Byrd's home in the 2010 Tennessee floods. As a member of Hammock, Marc has collaborated with singer/songwriters such as Matthew Ryan and Matthew Perryman Jones who have lent their vocals to several Hammock tracks.Prior to the formation of Hammock, Marc fronted the alternative rock band Common Children, as well as the band GlassByrd with his wife Christine Glass. Byrd has worked with The Choir, producing their album O How the Mighty Have Fallen. Byrd co-wrote the worship song "God of Wonders". hammockmusic.comeastforerst.org

For such a small country, Iceland has produced a surprising number of excellent artists.  From Bjork to Mum to Seabear to Olaf Arnalds to Sigur Ros, it's really extraordinary the amount of wonderful music that comes from that island. This last mix of 2011 is an Icelandic journey.  All the music is created by artists from Iceland.  The brilliant idea for it came from loyal listener, Kevin.  I wasn't sure how much music of Iceland I had in my collection but I was surprised to find quite a bit. Icelandic music for me begins & ends with Sigur Ros & Bjork.  They are both in the mix, with Jonsi, from Sigur Ros, making multiple appearances.  In addition to the Sigur Ros tune, Jonsi contributes "Stokkseyri" from Riceboy Sleeps & "9" by Frakkur. When Kevin suggested the mix & the title, he was thinking of Iceland as a land of extremes...glaciers & volcanoes, 24hr days & 24hr nights.  This mix doesn't swing too wildly from one extreme to another.  It's more ice than fire.  A few of the tunes do build in typical post-rock fashion, but generally things are fairly subdued. I used two Johann Johannsson tracks fairly close together, which I normally don't like to do but the IBM track just seemed to fit perfectly with the preceding cut.  Plus I was just happy to be able to use that IBM track again because I LOVE it! The pic in this post is from a terrific blog called "Stuck in Customs." Check out the blog or go to his Flickr stream to see some amazing photos.  I'm a little tired of the HDR effect in photos but Tret Ratcliff does a really nice job with it & it definitely helps that he is shooting in unbelievable locations. This was a fun mix to put together & I'd like to thank Kevin for suggesting it, I'm very happy with how it turned out. MIXES – Ambientblog

First, let me give my best wishes for 2010 to all of you!! What better way to start the new year than with a brand new mix ánd a brand new design (thanks Ingmar from Planet KL!)? The design change is symbolic, in a way: after publishing a lot of mixes in 2009, all of wich were created for radio broadcast, it is now time to take a further step and start publishing new mixes. "Miserere" is the first of these brand new mixes to be published. "Miserere" has taken its name from the concluding piece: Gregoria Allegri's Miserere, as performed by the Tallis Scholars. While working on this mix, I soon felt that this piece had to be the conclusion, and that it should not be combined with other pieces of music or environmental sounds.--- originally published on Ambientblog --- MISERERE PLAYLIST 0:00 Robert Hampson - Ahead Only the Stars- Vectors, 2009 Touch TO:710:10 Meredith Monk - Liquid Air- Mercy, 2002 Ecm 18291:14 Don Peyote - The Guardian- Eternal Now, 2009 Don Peyote Recordings DPY1CD0043:02 Martin O'Donnell, Michael Salvatori - The Rookie- Halo 3 ODST Soundtrack, 2009 Something Else6:47 Kreng - Slaapliedje- L'Autopsie Phénomenale de Dieu, 2009 Miasmah MIALP0107:16 The Caretaker - I Saw Your Face in a Dream- We'll all go riding on a Rainbow, 200x v/VM Test records VVMTCD157:29 Thomas Köner - 31 46 N 35 12 E Hour Ten- La Barca, 2009 Fario cd099:43 Nigel Samways - City of Gas Streetlamps- Veilleur de Nuit, 2009 Experimedia EXP05110:09 Rafael Anton Irrisarri - Still- Musique Pour Statues Menhirs, 2009 Arbouse recording arbou2612:58 Michel Banabila - Tape (Mix 2)- Changing Structures, 2009 soundcloud13:22 Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Flat- And in the endless Pause there came the sound of Bees, 2009 Type Type64LP16:02 Jónsi & Alex - Sleeping Giant- Riceboy Sleeps, 2009 Parlophone 509999630022017:00 Michel Banabila - Zeer Duister (voor Peter van Cooten)- Not on album, 2007 unreleased17:29 Kreng - Mythobarbital- L'Autopsie Phénomenale de Dieu, 2009 Miasmah MIALP01019:06 Benjamin Dauer - Murmur- Ceci N'Est pas une Pipe, 2009 Public Space Labs PS01021:20 Taylor Deupree - 6 A.M.- Favourite Places 1, 2007 Audiobulb 2007 AB01622:33 Robert Hampson - Ahead- Only the Stars - Vectors, 2009 Touch TO:7124:04 Franz Hautzinger - Deep T.- Gomberg II, 2007 Loewenhertz 01825:25 Franz Hautzinger - Fahne- Gomberg II, 2007 Loewenhertz 01826:20 Murcof - Isaías IV- La Sangre Illuminada, 2009 Intolerancia Records28:11 Exuviae - Wane and Flicker- Intrinsic Luminance, 2009 Endless Ascent ea00730:15 Jónsi & Alex - Boy 1904- Riceboy Sleeps, 2009 Parlophone 509999630022033:22 Sleep Research Facility - Dark Side of the Lune- Au Clair de La Lune, 2009 Infrequency 00534:05 Else Marie Pade - Illustrations - The Palace of the Sea King- Water-colours of the Sea, 2009 Dacapo Records 8.22654434:44 Netherworld - Jostedaal- Zaum, 2009 Psychonavigation Records PSY02937:02 Else Marie Pade - Illustrations - The Palace of the Sea King- Water-colours of the Sea, 2009 Dacapo Records 8.22654437:41 Ronald van der Meijs - Under the Dream- Private collection, 2009 unreleased39:05 Lawrence English - Quiet Planigale- Favourite Places 2, 2009 Audiobulb AB02643:27 Clint Mansell - We're Not Programs, Gerty, We're People- Moon OST, 2009 Black Records CMCD00144:15 Elegi - Fandens Bre- Varde, 2009 Miasmah MIACD00945:18 Hildur Gudnadottir - Unveiled- Without Sinking, 2009 Touch TO:7045:31 Hildur Gudnadottir - Elevation- Without Sinking, 2009 Touch TO:7047:35 Last Days - Thoughts of Alice- The Safety of the North, 2009 n5MD MD16650:12 Wixel - Jotunheimen- Norway, 2009 (august) 2009.bandcamp.com51:08 Scanner - Leoni- Consegnaci, Bambina, I Tuoi Occhi, 2009 Horus Music51:37 Robert Henke - Indigo_Transform- Indigo_Transform, 2009 Imbalance Computer Music ICM 0852:46 Mathew Adkins - Sea Soundscape- [60] Project, 2008 Impreintes digitales IMED089855:00 Roland Etzin - On the Bus- Recorded in the Field by…, 2006 Gruenrekorder Gruen03355:13 Elian - It was over, just like that- And Then, One Day, It was over, just like that, 2008 Trans>Parent Radiation Trans01255:20 Murcof - Eugenio- La sangre Iluminada, 2009 Intolerancia Records56:30 The Caretaker - Past Life Regression- Persistent Repetition of Phrases, 2008 History Always Favours the Winners HAFTWDL00357:07 The Gentleman Losers - Oblivion's Tide- Dustland, 2009 City Centre Offices TowerblockCD04357:50 Aaron Ximm (The Quiet American) - Starboard- Maritime Suite, 200x self-released58:00 The Tallis Scholars - Gregorio Allegri - Miserere (3 fragments)- Allegri: Miserere, 2005 Gimsell Records GIMSE401
