Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 21, 2025 is: hapless HAP-lus adjective Hapless means "having no luck." It's a synonym of unfortunate. // The documentary follows a hapless victim of false allegations. See the entry > Examples: "The New York Yankees had a nice, feel-good return to their spring training home this weekend by beating up on the hapless Tampa Bay Rays." — Kristie Ackert, Athlon Sports, 19 Apr. 2025 Did you know? Hapless means exactly what you'd expect it to mean: "without hap"—hap being another word for fortune or luck. Hap comes from the Old Norse word for "good luck," which is also the source of happen and happy. English has several words to describe those lacking good fortune, including ill-starred, ill-fated, unlucky, and luckless, a word formed in parallel to hapless by adding the suffix -less. Ill-starred suggests bringing calamity or the threat of a terrible fate ("the ill-starred year the Great Depression began"). Ill-fated refers only to being doomed ("the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic"). Unlucky and luckless usually apply to a person or thing notably or chronically unfortunate ("an unlucky slots player," "some luckless investors swindled in the deal"). Hapless is often imbued with a touch of pity, humor, or both for those to whom it refers, as in "a hapless goalie who couldn't block a shot to save his life."

This is the final year of Kyle Schwarber's 4-year contract that he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2022 season. Schwarber should NOT even hit the open market, and the Phillies should be working on a contract extension ASAP. Alec Bohm breaks his homerun drought with his first of the season last night. Nick Castellanos finishes a triple shy of a cycle. Zack Wheeler dominates, once again. And the Phillies win 8-4 over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Marc talks about the Phillies 8-4 win over the Tampa Rays and how it's the type of win we should expect from this team. Their ace dominanted over 7innings of 2run baseball, while their power bats came up with homers. Kyle Schwarber (12), Alec Bohm (1) and Nick Castellanos (4) all hit opposite field homers. Casty drove in 4 runs including a 3-run homer in the 8th. Wheeler picked up the win, his 3rd on the season. The Eagles are the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl (again) in the upcoming season. Steve Somers left behind a used cough drop, tobacco, and a chewed fingernail in the studio. The Knicks play game 1 in Detroit tonight, and while Gio is pessimistic about their chances against a team nobody predicts them to beat, he acknowledges that sports miracles happen. Jerry's first update includes Jalen Brunson on the Knicks' keys to victory and Karl-Anthony Towns' insights from playing them this season. Indiana won game one in Cleveland. The Mets lost both games of yesterday's doubleheader to the Cardinals, and the Yankees dropped their second straight series to the Rays. Jerry recapped the wild double-OT Blues/Jets game. Scottie Scheffler dominated the Byron Nelson. Boomer finished the hour discussing the Five Borough Bike Tour, where he biked 40 miles in 2 hours and 32 minutes yesterday.

Scottie Scheffler dominated the Byron Nelson. Boomer finished the hour discussing the Five Borough Bike Tour, where he biked 40 miles in 2 hours and 32 minutes yesterday. Hour 2 Jordan Davis, in town for Kelly Ripa's show, called in to assure they weren't being ditched. Phil Simms said on a podcast he'd give number eleven to Abdul Carter, but his family and agent declined, a situation Boomer blames on the Giants for not protecting retired numbers. Jerry's update begins with Moose celebrating the Kentucky Derby win. Jerry then played audio of Tommy Lugauer walking off his show after arguing with Shaun Morash about Jalen Brunson. The hour concluded with Quinn Ewers' agent's anger over his draft slide, prompting Boomer to contrast his situation with Shedeur's. Hour 3 We announced our Kickoff To Summer at D'Jais in Belmar with a Chris Lane concert. Tonight is game one of Knicks/Celtics, and a caller predicted Villanova grit. They took more excited calls from Knicks fans and wondered where Al would take them to dinner. Boomer playfully called Pritchard a "sonofabitch" in a positive way. Jerry's update included Mike Tirico leaving the Kentucky Derby coverage due to a nut allergy, the Yankees losing another series to the Rays, Cody Bellinger's 200th HR, the Mets' doubleheader loss in St. Louis, SNL's jab at Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson, and Kenny Albert's call of the Jets' double-OT win against the Blues. The hour ended with calls from Knicks fans, one questioning why the Knicks aren't being given a chance. Hour 4 We discussed potential free agency, including Giannis, and the Knicks' future despite their ongoing playoff run, noting their zero wins against the Celtics this year. A caller shared a story about Marc Malusis driving off with the gas pump still attached, prompting similar stories from other callers. Jerry's update previewed Knicks/Celtics, shared Derek Jeter's commencement speech about the necessity of failure, Jesse Winker's oblique injury, and Brett Baty's sore toe. The Moment of the Day was Jordan Davis calling in to joke around. The show concluded with more discussion about the Knicks needing to steal game one in Boston.
Ranger Suarez made his 2025 season debut for the Philadelphia Phillies, but took the loss after giving up 7 runs to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series finale at Citizens Bank Park yesterday. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper homered for the Phillies offense, but it wasn't enough to overcome the three runs allowed by the bullpen in the top of the 10th inning. Up next, it's a three game series with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Francisco Rojas is back with a new episode of Phillies Today. He gives his takeaways from the series win over the Diamondbacks, discusses his thoughts on Rob Thomson announcing Taijuan Walker has been moved to the bullpen, and more!
Send us a textIt was more fun talking about This Week in Baseball goings-on since #MLB team captains are kinda unimportant. A vestige of 19th century baseball, there are only three team captains in the Majors today. # Yankees Aaron Judge #Royals Salvador Perez, & #Rangers Marcus Semien. Why aren't there more? We dive into that thought in this week's episode. Four of the five teams in the #ALWest are .500 or better. Who'da thunk it? Jacob DeGrom is looking like prime DeGrom for Texas. Pitching injuries continue to be the story of the 2025 season. Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow of the #Dodgers are both on the IL. The boys from L.A. keep on winning. How about the Tampa Bay #Rays? They have had a bunch of home games scheduled in the early part of the season because there is not roof over Steinbrenner Field in Tampa - the temporary home of the Rays. If you didn't know, it rains a bunch in the afternoons and evenings in Tampa in the summer. So MLB is trying to avoid rainouts and scheduled the Rays for a lot of road trips after May. ]#RedSox puzzle us. Injuries yes, to Tristan Casas, hurt, but the Sox just find ways to lose instead of ways to win. #Yankees are in 1st place by default. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid!
