On Sunday, clocks across the country will fall back one hour, ending the latest cycle of Daylight Saving Time. That means sunlight is scarcer in the afternoon and even though the clock reads a different time, it doesn't mean our bodies will respond. In Delaware, lawmakers passed a bill in 2019 that would make daylight saving time permanent as long as neighboring states Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland do the same, which hasn't happened yet.Delaware Public Media's Kyle McKinnon caught up this week with registered nurse and clinical sleep educator Terry Cralle for more on how Daylight Saving Time affects us and the prospects of making it permanent.

Setting your intentions to get regular quality sleep takes some work. From changing lifestyle habits to being mindful of your sleep hygiene, there are a lot of factors to consider in the quest to get better rest – including creating a tranquil space to slip into deep, restorative sleep. However, the bedroom tends to be a catchall for the day, including discarded clothes, bags, shoes, accessories, a workspace and more. Can all this clutter disrupt your sleep? Probably not – but it can disrupt your peace of mind. This is where Terry Craelle, RN, sleep expert and representative of the Better Sleep Council comes in! Today Terry answers the questions: Does a messy/disorganized bedroom actually affect one's sleep? What are some other tips for “tidying” your sleep rituals? What's sleep hygiene? If someone is overwhelmed with all the advice, what's *one thing* they can start doing tonight to tidy their sleep habits? Terry's goal is to share clever hacks for decluttering your bedroom and reclaiming your zone of relaxation to sleep soundly!-------------------------------Links Discussed in This EpisodeOrder a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityConnect with Terry:Instagram | FacebookBetter Sleep Council (BSC)Show Notes for Declutter Your Bedroom (and Reclaim Tranquility)Enjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it! But one thing that tends to get overlooked that is connected to all the exercise, dieting and goal setting is sleep. So today, I am chatting with Terry Cralle about the importance of sleep and how getting enough or lack of sleep can make a tremendous impact on our lives, our relationships and our goal setting. Topics Covered: Why is sleep important? Do people need less sleep? Sleep trackers New research around sleep Stress and sleep Sleep deprivation Tricks to better sleep
Terry Cralle is a registered nurse, Certified Clinical Sleep Educator, and Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality who specializes in sleep health and wellness. As Better Sleep Council's spokesperson, frequent speaker and guest lecturer on the topic of sleep for schools, universities, sleep clinics, U.S. corporations, and employee wellness companies, Terry educates audiences on the importance of sleep to physical and psychological health, growth and development, safety, optimum functioning, productivity, peak performance, and quality of life. How does sleep loss impact job performance? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that just an hour or two of sleep loss contributed to a 19% drop in productivity. Not to mention an inability to concentrate, memory loss, irritability, weight gain...YIKES! How can we establish good work-sleep balance? Terry shares evidence-based advice on how to improve your 'sleep hygiene' by adjusting light, noise, and temperature in the bedroom; shutting down electronics well before bedtime; and separating work and sleep environments. Feeling tired at work? Ditch the caffeine and take a power nap. The shift to remote or hybrid work has changed America's daytime sleep habits to include sleep breaks at work. Terry believes that midday power naps--when done right--are a quick and efficient way to recharge during the day. Terry also shares great tips for ending the vicious cycle of work anxiety, stress, and lost sleep. Early on in Terry Cralle's career as a registered nurse, she found herself working in clinical research on insomnia, but it wasn't until one of the sleep doctors she was working with invited her to his sleep lab to gain a deeper understanding of what it's like to test people for a variety of sleep disorders that she made a realization which prompted an abrupt change of direction into a career in sleep medicine. “I've been in sleep medicine for 22 years now, and we used to say that sleep was one of the three pillars of health and wellness, along with diet and exercise, and now we don't say that because we've learned that sleep is actually the foundation of health and wellness, and exercise and nutrition and diet are completely contingent on sleep,” says Cralle, who in addition to an RN is a Certified Clinical Sleep Educator. She joins the podcast today to discuss what it's like to play an integral part in patients' experiences in sleep labs, the most common misconceptions and complaints people have about sleep trials, the impact of sleep on physical and mental health, the parallel epidemics of sleep deprivation and obesity, how social perceptions and pressures have linked the need for sleep with characteristics such as weakness, laziness, and a lack of work ethic, and the range of sleep disorders they test for, which includes narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, REM behavior disorder, and restless leg syndrome. Getting a full night's sleep can move you to success in your daily life. The old trope of burning the candle at both ends to get ahead has been proven false. You no longer need to buy into the idea that you can only succeed if you get little sleep. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, depending on age, genetics, health, and any recent sleep issues. Teens need 8-10 hours per night. Sleep is important for organ function, hormone production, weight loss and cellular repair. You must pass through the four stages of sleep to get the most out of every night. The four stages of sleep are: Stage 1 NREM (Non-REM): light sleep, least refreshing, takes up 5-10% of the night. Stage 2 NREM: more solid sleep, takes about 50% of the night. Stage 3 NREM: deep sleep where growth hormone is released, takes 5-10% of sleep time, but takes more if sleep deprived. REM: fragile sleep where dreams occur, takes 20-25% of a night’s sleep. Listen in as sleep expert, Terry Cralle, RN, shares what you need to know about getting enough sleep to succeed.

How’d you sleep last night? Sometimes if we don’t sleep well, it’s a function of our environment: you’re up with a kiddo, the cat’s crying to be fed or that cough kept you up all night. But so often sleep is elusive because of our poor sleep habits, the biggest being our own attitude toward sleep. In this episode you’ll hear from a sleep expert named Terry Cralle – she’s a registered nurse and certified clinical sleep educator and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council. And she’s got some great back-to-basics about why you need to be sleeping fully each night and how to improve your own sleep habits including the ideal temperatures for falling asleep, how much sleep your kids need each night and much more!
