I Wish I Knew THAT About Songwriting

Today, Callum and Jamie discuss the concept of listener bandwidth and the tightrope. In this episode you'll learn: Some practical thoughts on avoiding the pitfalls of ‘2nd verse hell' and how this relates to listener bandwidth + the tightrope. How to approach people and form real relationships by showing a genuine interest in what they are doing + being a ‘go giver'.How you can use pictures and movies to aid in idea development and inject more detail into your songs. Practical ways to generate original metaphors. We answer some of your amazing questions that have been submitted.Pat Pattison on Metaphors. There are three types of metaphor: Expressed Identity - asserts an identity between two nouns (e.g., fear is a shadow; a cloud is a sailing ship). Expressed Identity comes in three forms,"x is y" (fear is a shadow)"the y of x " (the shadow of fear)"x's y" (fear's shadow)Run each of these through all three forms, wind = yelping dogwind = riverwind = highwayNow come up with a few of your own and run them through all three forms. You might even extend them into longer versions (e.g., clouds are sailing ships on rivers of wind).Qualifying Metaphor - Adjectives qualify nouns; adverbs qualify verbs. Friction within these relationships create metaphor (e.g., hasty clouds, or to sing blindly).Verbal Metaphor - formed by conflict between the verb and its subject and/or object (e.g., clouds sail; he tortured his clutch; frost gobbles summer down).Aristotle says that the ability to see one thing as another is the only truly creative human act. Most of us have the creative spark to make metaphors, we just need to train and direct our energy properly.Read more about metaphors in Pattison's book Writing Better Lyrics.

Authentic Leadership for Everyday People is the podcast where we investigate the connection between effective leadership and authenticity. If you are looking for inspiration and tips on how to become a better leader by being your true self, you are in the right place. Today's guest is award winning Americana singer-songwriter Susan Cattaneo. Susan started her career as a writer-producer in television, where she ended up running on air promotion for WPIX, New York's number 1 independent channel. She left that career to attend Berklee College of Music on a vocal scolarship and was hired to teach songwriting there upon graduation. Susan talks about what it is like to teach and work with creative people, and the lessons that leaders can take from that process. Since we are married, and I am also her manager, we also talk about what are some factors that make a work partnership between life partners successful. KEY TAKEAWAYS [03:36] - Susan, welcome to Authentic Leadership for Everyday People, how are you doing? [04:22] – Why don't you start by giving my listeners, our listeners, a background of how you started some key changes though your career. [07:31] – This interruption, part of our dynamic, you do have the tendency to under play your accomplishments. [09:42] – If any body listening here is interesting in learning about writing lyrics, check out Pat Pattison on Coursear. [10:21] – Take me to the moment when you actually made the decision to [11:12] – What was the moment, of saying, “that is okay, I am willing to step away from this” and what was the driver? [14:47] – You made the discovery of a new professional path, that you didn't know at the time, which was the staff-song writer. [16:33] – We both had to make an adjustment, I think, and we moved back to Boston. And that is when you started teaching. [17:56] – If you were to step in the shoes of a manager or senior leader who is coaching new younger employees that are coming, and they may have some skills, what are some of the things that you learn in terms of being effective? [20:48] – What are some of the elements that make a successful co-writing session? [24:15] – There is obviously the scenario where you know that you are writing something that is going to be for you. [25:22] – I remember the day I told you, “You went to Berkley cause you wanted to be an artist, you have this enormous catalog of songs, no body is buying records anymore, let's have you become an artist”. [27:27] – I think this is a really important part in this podcast, I always ask people was there a moment when something didn't go the way you wanted. Dante Palminteri quotes Woody Allan in this podcast with “85% of success is showing up" as an artist that sings, plays guitar, writes songs and is an actor its clear nothing is going to get in the way of this talented and hard working artist to achieve whatever he wants to in life. We talk about his journey with Berklee College of music, studying under Pat Pattison (episode 40) and his obsession and love for John Mayer. His new single Brunette is a lot of fun and in his own words is just the music he wants to create and loves. Raised between the East & West coasts, American singer-songwriter & actor Dante Palminteri matured his musical styling at an early age, inspired by John Mayer's poetic mastery of the human psyche & Ed Sheeran's genre-defying melodies. An early sufferer of anxiety & dyslexia, Dante found solace in the last place one would expect: written word. Dreaming up lyrics on teen heartbreak & defying the status quo, he pursued a career in songwriting, eventually strumming his way into Berklee College of Music. Lyrics about teenage angst & high school crushes soon evolved into complex compilations on unrequited love, soulmates lost & found, & the growing pains of adulthood. Struck by the lyrical prowess of Americana muse Jason Isbell, Dante spent his early twenties reinventing his sound - a combination of his hard rock roots mixed with his contemporary inspirations. Toying between stories of love lost & won, Dante reflects on his own vulnerability, recounting real-life experiences facing rejection & loneliness, alongside heartfelt passion & intimacy. In a bold move, he's bared it all on stages from Feinstein's 54Below & Arlene's Grocery, to Rockwood Music Hall & Bethlehem Musikfest. He's also in the new Godfather of Harlem TV series to be released this month staring Forest Whitaker Connect with Dante: Website Spotify Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube IMDB Mentioned in Podcast: Berklee College of Music John Mayer - Room For Squares Hiatus Kaiyote Buy Rae Leigh a coffee HERE

Sean begins this episode with a poem called Mogwai from his first published collection of poetry called Love is the New Hate. This poem was written inspired by and intended to be read while listening to Waltz for Aidan by the band Mogwai. Sean and Brooke discuss a couple of books on improving your craft of creative writing. Firstly The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. A book aimed at writers of all creative persuasions. And also Writing Better Lyrics by Pat Pattison, which is obviously aimed more specifically at songwriters. Brooke Russell writes and performs a song called The Colour of Regret inspired by the creative prompt of the same name supplied by Rebecca Vespertine. Thank you so much Rebecca. And thank you Brooke Russell! Sean gets his ranty pants on and writes a poem dedicated to a very brave 9 year old girl called Harper Nielsen. This week I have singer/songwriter Angela Parrish who shares with us about the importance of having multiple streams of income and how she runs her business. She also talks about how she saved for and completely self-funded $20,000 to record her latest album, Faithful and Tall. Based out of Los Angeles, Angela creates her own brand of music, drawing inspiration from the likes of Carole King, Ray Charles, Eva Cassidy, Gregg Allman, and Alison Krauss. Her music has brought her great acclaim including second place for her song “The Couple Down the Hall” at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Song Competition, and having her song “Higher” selected as a finalist in the 2013 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. You may have heard her song “Different Tomorrow” which earned a primetime placement on CBS TV last summer. Thats not even mentioning her collaborating with top producers and musicians in the industry.     Success Mantra I realized early on that success was tied to not giving up. Most people in this business gave up and went on to other things. If you simply didn’t give up, you would outlast the people who came in on the bus with you. - Harrison Ford     Multiple Streams of Income • Talks about the different streams of income she has which include performing, album sales, and teaching piano. • Teaching people one on one. • Limiting how much she teaches so she can focus on the other aspects on her business that she has more passion for. • Talks about the different percentages each of her streams of income are bringing in and where she’s focusing. • Music industry in general and where she thinks it’s headed with music being sold online and subscription services like Spotify. • How people will support the artists they love. • How Periscope can help to build an audience.     Managing Business • Tells how she wasn’t good at managing her business and how she got better. • Read All You’re Worth by Elizabeth Warren teaches how to manage your finances. • 50% of your income is survival/basic needs, 30% is discretionary, 20% is savings. • Talks about how she self-funded her album, hiring all of the help she needed in musicians, studio work, designers, etc. • Tells how much it took to create her album. Spoiler alert: It was roughly 20,000 completely self-funded.     Other Topics Covered • Having tenacity. • Not giving up, yet knowing when to quit. • Fear of rejection. • Finding yourself. • How all your experiences make up who you are. • Taking risks to be true to yourself and your art. • Talks about her early performing days. • Immersing yourself in the community that you want to be a part of. • Balancing business and art. • The importance of building a following which makes you more attractive to labels and other people to work with. • Collecting emails. Opt-in magnet.     Failure Moment Putting out her record without any business knowledge. She feels it isn’t doing as good as it can be and now she’s changing that.     Favorite Success The songwriter’s hall of fame competition and being recognized by her peers.       Parting Advice Don’t sell yourself short. The Candid Frame: Conversations on Photography

Pat Pattison is an expert on career re-invention, not only because he has conducted extensive research on the topic but because he has successfully done it himself. He is a Hudson Institute certified transition and career coach specializing in helping professional creative people. A former Walt Disney Studios executive, Pat was asked to teach a night class on “The Business of Art” at a Los Angeles community college about six years ago. Every semester he noticed that fully a third of his class were people 45+ who wanted to start more creative and fulfilling new lives. That was the genesis of his “Creative YOU Turn” program, coaching, workshops and book.  Pat has been a Hollywood, toy Industry, and advertising executive for most of his career. He served as VP of marketing for the Metromedia (now Fox) TV stations and VP of creative services at Disney (Buena Vista) Television as well as creative services at Disneyland.  Among the many successful films, television shows, and celebrities he has marketed: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, the Super Bowl, the Emmy Awards, the 2012 Olympics, Rachel Ray, and Carlos Santana. A few years ago Pat “remade” himself by becoming a TV host, commercial actor, and print model. His passion now is to help others successfully remake their own lives.  Pat interviews other successful re-inventors on his cable TV show, Pat Pattison’s Remade in America. He is also an executive transition coach and teacher, and frequently appears on other television outlets as a self-reinvention expert.    Resources:   http://patpattison.net/executive-transition-coaching/   http://www.eastvillageyoga.org/   http://www.tvguestpert.com/guestpert_details.asp?guestpert=309   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Duchamp

At Berklee College of Music, Pat Pattison created the world’s first songwriting major. He has taught a host of talented songwriters, including Grammy winners John Mayer and Gillian Welch. I was introduced to Pat through his free online Songwriting course (check coursera.org), and his method of “preserving the natural shape of the language” has really helped me analyze my own lyric writing. In this episode of Composer Quest, I ask Pat about his theory that our language can be interpreted like a piece of music, with a tonic note and harmonic structure. I also share music from The Happiness Project, in which Charles Spearin wrote music to match up with the speech patterns of his family and neighbors.
