I often get asked the question “How did you get into this work with men?” - with a commonly preconceived idea that it was some kind of obvious rock-bottom or really traumatic event that led to me turning my life around and then getting into the work to help men in the same situation. While that might be a sexy story, it's not the case. What is true is that my story like everyone's, hold crucial events that are vitally relative to their own life experiences. So, what I did go through eventually led me to get into this work. However, I m often interested my self in the journey of other men who end up doing similar work. Enter this week's guest, Bryan Reeves, a former Captin in the United States Airforce, now life and relationships coach for men and couples. That is a journey I am interested to hear - airforce to coach on love, essentially.   In this Episode: Byran is a fascinating guy, with a huge heart, an incredibly smart head and a wonderful way with words. In this episode, we explore some of the language around boys and men and differentiate between some key aspects, such as his quote “Boys save, men serve” which is a fascinating take on mindset and psychology, especially from a former US serviceman. We explore some of Bryan's wonderful insights into moving from being broke and attaching his entire identity to it, to realising that "My situation is not my identity. My bank account is not my identity. How much money I have is my identity, it's just how much money I have at that moment. Who am I? Well, I'm not my bank account, I'm not my living situation, I'm not my past.” He shares some of his journeys into trusting men and trusting himself, ultimately. If you're a man who has struggled to move from placing your identity into the things you collect or to trust yourself, this episode is for you. Bryan has some phenomenal work, including a recently released book ‘Choose her every day (or leave her)' - you can hear us talk about that in this episode, and you can find it below. In previous appearances on this podcast and elsewhere, Pat Friman has told the story of Father Flanagan, founder of BoysTown. According to Pat, Father Flanagan often made the following statement when describing his philosophy of helping troubled youths: "there is no such thing as a bad boy, only bad environments, bad modeling, and bad teaching." For the Spring 2021 issue of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Dr. Linda LeBlanc invited Pat to expand on these remarks in the issue's lead paper. In this podcast, I'm joined by both Linda and Pat, as well as Inside JABA regular, Dr. Claire St. Peter, where we talk at length about the "circumstantial view" of behavior as it applies to both clinical practice in particular, and societal trends more generally. Specifically, we discuss the following: How this paper fits into LeBlanc’s “big idea paper” concept. How “big idea” papers are often conceptual rather than data based. Why Pat stopped presenting papers with original data, and why he started giving more thematic talks. The difference, from Pat’s perspective between giving a talk and writing a journal article. A brief history of BoysTown. Just what is the Circumstantial View of problem behavior? Some examples from Pat’s life where he failed to take the Circumstantial View of behavior. Why the Circumstantial View has failed to flourish? How supervisors can incorporate these views with trainees and other team members? Why it is important to tell a real-life story as a vehicle for explain a behavioral principles. Why Pat’s view of Walden Two has changed. Movies that demonstrate both the Circumstantial and Characterological View of behavior. And much more! During this conversation, we discussed many papers and other resources. I've done my best to capture all of them below: The paper that inspired this podcast, "There is no such thing as a bad boy: The circumstantial view of problem behavior." The JABA Homepage. Pat Friman's appearances on Behavioral Observations (Session 10, Session 16, Session 42, and Session 77). Goldiamond (2002). Toward a Constructional Approach to Social Problems: Ethical and Constitutional Issues Raised by Applied Behavior Analysis. Pat's TedTalk. The short film Pat referenced. The DailyBA clip we discussed (Pink Sweater/Didn't Know her Circumstances). This Way of Thinking (CE/Short film by Team OnLocation). Session 72: Compassionate Service Delivery. Quotable Quote: “When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” – Alexander Den Heijer. Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman. A Clockwork Orange. Walden Two. In keeping with previous Inside JABA Series podcasts, there will be no ads in this episode. However, this show happens to be eligible for BACB Continuing Education. A martyr is not just a religious or political figure, who was sacrified for the greater good. In society today, sacrificing yourself for your country, its institutions, even your job, parents or partner, is accepted as part of life and the relationships we enter into. That makes the epervasiveness of martyrdom on an individual level that much harder to discern. However, having to suffer for the sake of others is not necessarily natural and does not have to be part of life. This episode asks you in what area of your life you may be allowing your energy to be siphoned off, and your divinity and wholeness to be breached - and how to reclaim it. Martyrdom is the opposite of sovereignty. And personal sovereignty is fundamental to Essene Shamanism and the Tree of Life. This Way of life shows that it is not only possible, but vital to live a life based on sovereignty and maintain interdependent, sovereign relationships. This episode will share ways to enable you to let go of martyrdom and claim your power back.

https://youtu.be/-DRkcLRf3iE “Even Though I Speak in This Way….” - Calvanism Hebrews 6:4-12 English Standard Version (ESV) 4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. 7 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. 9 Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. 10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. ANDDDD, here we are again. The third time in the letter to the scattered Hebrew believers, the writer mentions apostasy. Greek “aphistemi” a departing from God and abandoning what one once believed and experienced in Christ. It involves a disowning of Christ, departure from the Body of Christ and the Christian faith. Scripture, especially here in Hebrews issues real and urgent warnings about this grave possibility, designed both to alert us to the deadly danger of apostasy and its consequences and to motivate us to persevere in faith and obedience. Why was the writer warning these things? A few reasons, they were scattered and not gathering regularly. (Heb 10:25-26) They were persecuted by the Roman government and other Jews,  and as seen from last week they were not maturing in their faith. The divine purpose of these warning passages must not be weakened by the view that states, “The warnings are real, but the possibility of actual apostasy is not”. An examination of the above phrases will show that the writer refers to those who are sincere believers. The phrase "it is impossible" denotes absolute impossibility. It has been contended, that it denotes only great difficulty. But the meaning is that "the thing could not be done;" that it was not merely very difficult, but absolutely impossible. The word – “impossible” occurs only in the New Testament in the following places, in all which it denotes that the thing could not be done; Matthew 19:26; Mark 10:27, "With men this is impossible;" that is, men could not save one who was rich, implying that the thing was wholly beyond human power. Luke 18:27, "the things which are impossible with men are possible with God" - referring to the same case; Acts 14:8, "A man of Lystra, impotent in his feet;" that is, who was wholly "unable" to walk; Romans 8:3, "For what the law could not do;" what was absolutely "impossible" for the Law to accomplish; that is, to save people; Hebrews 6:18, "In which it was impossible for God to lie;" Hebrews 10:4, "It is not possible for the blood of bulls and of goats to take away sin;" and Hebrews 11:6, "Without faith it is impossible to please God;" in all of these instances denoting absolute impossibility. These passages show that it is not merely a great difficulty to which the apostle refers, but that he meant to say that the thing was wholly unfeasible; that it could not be done. And if this be the meaning, then it proves that if those referred to should fall away, they could never be renewed. Their case was hopeless, and they must perish: that is, if a true Christian should apostatize, or fall from grace, "he never could be renewed again," and could not be saved.

Safety includes both physical and emotional safety. Physical safety may be a large enough paycheck to pay the bills, while emotional safety involves feeling comfortable enough to speak out without fear of retribution.  A foundation of trust is essential for safety. Ask your employees directly what would give them more of a sense of support, including what they see as meaningful benefits and perks.  Research shows employees become more loyal when they experience kindness from their manager or leader. All of us are born with a desire to move towards rewards. At work, that translates into professional development opportunities to stretch our talents and move forward.  In the best workplaces, employees have a deep sense that they belong, that they are part of and attached to one other.  According to the Connection/Direction/Correction Pyramid, managers must first build Connection (invest in relationship), then they can give more effective Direction (guidance along with greater autonomy), and that enables the team member to positively intake Correction (constructive feedback).  Connection is created by gratitude and care. When people feel recognized for the work they do, they are 23% more effective. When employees feel valued and cared for, their productivity increases 43%. To help employees feel cared for, connect with them on a personal level by finding out about their lives and enjoy celebrations together. Focus on the positive rather than harping on the negative. When things go wrong, forgive mistakes swiftly and ask your employees what went wrong and what they could do differently in the future. Praise in public, correct in private. No one wants to be embarrassed or mocked. In order to ensure emotional safety, discuss problems in private. But make sure to collect all of the information beforehand rather than just reacting. Ask your employees what they thought went wrong and what they could do better next time.  Discuss with your employees beforehand what consequences they would suggest if they make a mistake or drop the ball on a project. People support what they create.  KEEP UP WITH DAVE   Website: www.LifeJourneyOn.com TEDx Talk:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmz7z4hyM9E  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drdaveschramm/ www.DrDaveSpeaks.com   mamie@mamieks.com

Creating Unique Content – PTC 308

Podcast Talent Coach

There is one way to stand out from the crowd in your podcast niche. Most people think the solution to creating unique content is creative or better content. That isn't the case. Your content can be copied. You become unique by the way you present the content. CONTENT IS KING? You've heard it often. Content is king. Well, content isn't king. Content by itself won't gain you an audience. Content isn't king. Great content is king. Unique content is king. Your presentation makes that king one-of-a-kind. I learned this early on in my radio career when my program director told me to stop copying everyone else. On-air radio talent, a.k.a. DJs of disc jockeys, get critiqued on a regular basis by their program directors in meetings called aircheck sessions. In these one-on-one meetings, you listen to your show and your PD gives you suggestions to make it better. Nobody likes to be critiqued. However, if you understand that your best interest is what it is all about, your show gets better. We had just launched a new station playing alternative music of the early 90s. New Order, R.E.M., Depeche Mode, Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs, and so many others. It was a great time. I had moved across the hall from our active rock station. At that station we were playing Metallica, Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Motley Crue and the rock tunes of the time. Even though I had made the move to the alternative station, my style and delivery was still influenced by the DJs on the rock station. I was using the lingo, cadence and content that I had been using over there. It was natural to me, but didn't fit the style of the station. As we were listening to my show in that aircheck session, my program director pointed it out. She said, "That line is really a rock thing. Why don't you leave it to them and do something unique? Be yourself." That is when I took the first step in really developing my own style. Everything I was doing to this point was simply a derivative of someone else. I was a cliché, a poor knock off. Why would anyone listen to me when they could get the real thing by listening to the original? From there, I took my content and made it original. It was on the road to becoming great. Over the years, my style and content developed. I became myself. That is when my show finally became #1. My content was original and fresh. Nobody else could copy it, because it was my authentic self. GREAT CONTENT Before you can get to your unique self and unique content, you need to have great content. People need to care first. If your content isn't great, nothing else matters. The production of your podcast could be the best available. You could have all the bells and whistles available in your studio. The marketing of your podcast could incredibly creative and unique. However, if the content isn't great, no one will care. Once you have your great content, don't simply go through the motions creating your podcast. Find a unique angle. Your take on the subject should be interesting, personal and full of stories. Make your content stand out using creativity and personal revelation. It is just like this example. I could tell you to create unique content by being yourself. But 20 other podcast coaches could do that as well. How many can tell you they have learned this example through 30 years of radio experience and by actually learning it first hand while transitioning from one radio station to another? I have had the #1 radio show in the market for 20 years. In fact, more people listen to my show than any other show on the radio in the state. And I'm not even on in the mornings during the time when most people listen to the radio. I'm on a 10-year run. Be you and win. Content won't attract an audience unless it is great content. When your content is great, you become king. But you won't remain king unless that great content is unique content. Make it happen by being yourself. There are five key areas of focus when creating great and unique content. 1. REPEATING YOURSELF That's right, of course, like I said, obviously. If you find yourself saying "obviously" or "of course", you are making one of two errors. The first error is repeating yourself. If you are saying "obviously" because you feel everyone already knows the information, you are wasting your breath. There is no need to say it. Everybody knows it. I may say, "The sun comes up in the East, of course." Everyone listening to me knows the sun comes up in the East. There was no reason for me to point out the origin of the morning sun. "Of course" gets thrown in, so it didn't look like I was trying to teach you about the sunrise. I didn't want you to think I just learned that. "Of course" plays it off. Instead, just say, "Because the sun comes up in the East, ..." or something similar. Acknowledge it without the qualifier. The second error is lack of confidence. You may want to sound knowledgeable to those who know the information. Yet, you know there is a segment of the audience that does not know the details. In this case, you're just wasting words. I may say, "The band will be at the arena Saturday night, of course." Some may be aware of this performance. Yet, there may be listeners in the audience who haven't heard the news. It makes sense to add the information. The idea is to sound knowledgeable and credible to those that already know, while providing the information to those unaware. You simply need to restructure you sentence and eliminate the cliché. "When the band is at the arena Saturday night, parking will be at a premium." This sentence provides new information to both segments. I include the "arena Saturday night" portion for the new listeners while giving those already aware of the concert new parking information. Both receive a benefit. When you include "that's right" or "like I said", you are repeating yourself. Your listener heard you the first time. Most people use these cliches to fill time while they think of the next thing to say. Avoid going in circles. Your listener will quickly become uninterested. Your show loses momentum. Know where you're going and keep moving forward. 2. ELIMINATE CLICHES I hear so many cliches in podcasts today. Actually, they are all over business in general. The definition of a cliché is "a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. It is a very predictable or unoriginal thing or person." We had a leader of our radio division who would use one particular cliché on every conference call we had. Every month, we would have a conference call to keep each station in sync. It would be run by our division leader. The call would then feature 4 or 5 other speakers covering various topics. The call would last about 30 minutes. After every speaker would finish their report, our division leader would say, "Really good stuff." When he would talk about new resources that were available to us, he would wrap it up with "really good stuff". When he talked about new music coming out, he would call it "really good stuff". What started out as a compliment became a hollow nod that carried no weight. It was overused and lacked original thought. It was predictable. He got so predictable, as the speaker would wrap up, we would say to ourselves, "that was really good stuff" right before our leader would chime in with the same line. It kept us entertained on the call, but added nothing to the conversation. What cliches are you using? There are so many. Many times you don't realize it is a cliché until you start listening to your own show, or a coach points it out. This is a big reason you should be listening to your show in real time like a real listener. Pick a show that is a few weeks old and review it. The one cliché that sounds most out of place to me on a podcast is, "To be honest with you". When somebody says "to be honest with you", I immediately think, "were you lying to me before?" What message are you trying to convey when you say, "to be honest with you"? I assume you are simply trying to add emphasis to what you are saying. In reality, the cliché has lost its power. It means nothing. Cliché. There are many others. We are thinking out of the box. We are pushing the envelope. We are taking it to the next level. Erik here to remind you something or another. You know what I mean? You know what I'm saying. Tons of clichés. Take an older episode of your show and really listen to it. Find the clichés and eliminate them. Be original and create unique content. 3. AVOID ROUGH TRANSITIONS And now it's time for … This phrase seems harmless. It looks like a logical transition from one segment to another during your podcast. Unfortunately, this phrase gives your listener permission to leave the show. When you use "and now it's time for..." or some similar phrase, it tells the listener that one segment is over and we are moving on to something else. This phrase also signals a natural break in the show and the perfect time to exit. The transition is a lot like a commercial break in a television show. It is time to grab the remote to see what else is available. Famous American showman P. T. Barnum noticed that people were lingering too long at his exhibits. If he could get them through the exhibit faster, he could get more paying customers through in a day. Barnum posted signs around the exhibit indicating "This Way to the Egress". Unaware that "Egress" simply meant "Exit", people followed the signs to what they assumed was a fascinating exhibit only to end up outside. He got people to leave sooner. Take down the "egress" sign. If you truly want to hold your listener from one segment to the next, don't send up the signal. Simply move to the next segment. The phrase "now it's time for ..." is also unnatural. Imagine you are at a cocktail party. You are discussing the baseball game that you saw over the weekend. After that topic runs its course, do you say, "Now it's time to talk about my new car"? I doubt it. You probably just roll right into, "Hey, I bought a new car last week." It is a natural transition. Your friend doesn't think, "Hmm, that was a pretty rough transition." They have moved on right along with you. As you wrap up one segment, move right to the next. You might end the first segment with, "If you take those steps, things should be back to normal." Roll into the next with, "Jackie has a question about teamwork," and play the call. The next segment just starts. You've hooked them on the next segment without opening the door to leave. Don't flash the exit sign. Eliminate "and now it's time for" to hold your listener for the entire podcast. 4. BE ORIGINAL WITH UNIQUE CONTENT Hello Everybody in Radioland! Are we on 1930s radio? To be engaging and unique, you need to be human. You need to be yourself. As you record your podcast, use your natural voice and your own words. Individuals who are new to broadcasting tend to want to sound like their broadcasting idols. They try to imitate those they have heard on the radio with their voice and clichés. Unfortunately, new broadcasters tend to sound as if they are using scripted drivel done in some character voice that is forced and unnatural. You don’t need to sound like Gary Vaynerchuk, Wolfman Jack, Howard Cosell, Don LaFontaine or Howard Stern. In fact, you shouldn’t sound like those guys. They are who they are. You should be who you are. If you are naturally over-the-top, then be over-the-top. If you are not, don’t fake it. You’ll sound like an amateur and a fake. Be natural. Talk with a little energy, but always deliver it as you naturally speak. The days of "the voice for radio" are gone. You don’t need a big voice to be on the radio. You surely don’t need a big voice to create a podcast. Your voice becomes unique by what you say, not how you sound saying it. Be yourself. Use your own voice instead of trying to impersonate someone else. Use your natural voice and your own words. 5. USE STORIES Finally, use stories to create unique content. Nobody can copy your experiences and stories. Through your stories, your listeners get to know you, like you and trust you. Through the details you include in your stories all your listeners to get to know what you value and believe. They understand your personality. Make your stories rich with detail. Create images in the theater of the mind of your listeners. Focus on these five areas to create great content. Avoid repeating yourself. Eliminate the cliches. Create smooth transitions in your content. Above all else, be original and tell great stories. These five areas will help you create unique on every episode. Do you need help with your podcast? The home office cannot be a permanent solution for a global corporate office strategy, because not everyone can work from home. 86% of millennials want the best of both worlds: the choice to work remotely and in a fun office culture and inspiring workplace. Hybrid spaces are needed for hybrid work models. Space on-demand supports flexible working and reduces fixed costs. Companies are starting to provide Space-as-a-Service memberships to employees in their benefits package. Like the hotel industry, asset owners will partner with branded operators to attract the right mix of customers, add layers of service and create new revenue lines. Generic spaces lack brand loyalty, consistency and the network effect. We’ll see building owners partner with specific brands to drive the right economics that meet the business plan of the asset.  Selecting the right brand adds tremendous value by delivering a predictable customer experience, making the building attractive, and increasing asset value. Hi everyone! Welcome back for another review. It took some negotiations mediated by One Movie Spouse, but we’re allowing Shane Hyde to return to the podcast with a new series of reviews covering contemporary horror films. We figured it was the best place to put him after his extensive role in Reign of Terror 2019. Expect to see Shane around here a lot more often in the coming weeks, and especially next year, starting with today’s review of a critical darling. Although, he proves results may vary. And for a few other reviews form Shane, check out “Polar” (Episode #412), “They Shall Not Grow Old” (Episode #426), and the collaboration that inspired part of Reign of Terror 2019 during his review for “Starship Troopers” (Episode #447). Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our friends at the Donna Martin Graduates podcast. Every episode, Kelly Senatra breaks down an episode of the pop-culture sensation, “Beverly Hills 90210”. Subscribe and get caught up as they continue their journey through season one. And definitely check out their guest appearance for Reign of Terror 2019 in Episode #599, with her review of “Scream 2”. You can find them Twitter @graduatesdonna, Facebook @donnamartingraduatespodcast, and Instagram @donnamartingraduates90210. Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Kia Ora! I’m Shane. When I’m not the villain of the podcast, I’m also providing some really late reviews for your listening pleasure. Apologies to Joe.  Today’s movie is “Nightmare Cinema”, 2018’s horror anthology film, all tied together around a loose premise of people being bought together in a cinema to view their worst fears. And there are some names attached here! There’s Mickey Rourke, John Chamberlain, Elizabeth Reaser (who’s from “The Haunting of Hill House”, you’ll know her when you see her), David Slade, and even frickin’ Joe Dante of “The Howling”! But, like all recipes, the whole isn’t necessarily the sum of its parts. Shall we take a look? And there will be spoilers ahead. Warning you now. Now first up, I’m not going to say I wasn’t entertained. I really was. Of the segments, ‘The Thing in the Woods’ was almost comical in the way it satirized the slasher genre, and then knocked that on its ear with ‘Alien Spiders’ of all things. ‘Mashit’ tried to take itself a little seriously, but with some dodgy green screen, and some questionably hilarious special effects, it let itself down somewhat. And while watching that, I couldn’t help but think of what was an homage (homage?) to Peter Jackson’s “Brain Dead”, or “Dead Alive” as its known in the United States. For me, the best segment was the middle one: “This Way to Egress”. It was effectively filmed in black and white, which left you questioning reality or sanity in a similar manner to say, 2006’s “Silent Hill”. This segment I LOVED! It was directed by David Slade and starred Elizabeth Reaser from “The Haunting of Hill House”. It was quick, to the point, and conveyed the horror of lost control so demonstrably. Yeah, the mood was something else. A lot of what we see here, though, can be seen in last year’s “Twilight Zone” or “Channel Zero” or “Two Sentence Horror Stories”, all of which are just as effective as this film. But, as it’s a film, we do need to touch on the connective tissue. The cinema, the projectionist, because this is where the film was at its weakest. A segment would start with the protagonist seeing their name up in lights outside the cinema, walk on in, and then be shown their worst fears. The Projectionist didn’t even appear until halfway through the film – and Mickey Rourke was terribly, terribly underutilized. 2018’s “Nightmare Cinema” felt a little more like a showpiece. Like someone saying, ‘Look at what we can bring together!’ with the cinema component being something of an afterthought. But don’t take that as me crapping on it, I’m really not. From the campy humour of “The Thing in the Woods” to the existential dread of “This Way for Egress”, and even the wackiness of “Mashit”, it has a bit for everyone. Rotten Tomatoes: 77% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 60 One Movie Punch: 7.0/10 “Nightmare Cinema” is like a bag of jelly-beans. Someone will find something they like and leave me with the black ones, because clearly black jellybeans are the best. “Nightmare Cinema” is likely available on most streaming services. And that’s it from me. Be kind to one another and I’ll be back in a week with another review. I really do have to ask: How hard can it be to see at nighttime wearing a welding mask?
