This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. State-owned rail and port operator Transnet could, potentially, show significant improvement this year compared with last year's dismal performance, says transport economist and macrologistics researcher at Stellenbosch University Dr Jan Havenga. However, it is imperative that Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan appoints new leadership at Transnet as soon as possible, he adds. Havenga has been part of the team of four in Operation Vulindlela that led the development of the Freight Logistics Roadmap approved by Cabinet in December. He has also been providing technical input for the National Logistics Crisis Committee (NLCC) since its inception last year. He also spent some 20 years at Transnet. "We cannot afford a protracted process such as the one we saw at Eskom," he notes. This said, Havenga is highly positive about the efforts by interim Transnet Group CEO Michelle Phillips and Transnet Freight Rail acting CEO Russell Baatjies to stem some of the bleeding since their appointment at the start of November. "Given the depth of the problems at Transnet they have performed miracles, and I would suggest that we afford them the time and space to address the challenges at the parastatal. They have, for example, managed to halve the delays at the Durban port, in my estimate." In December, 52 vessels were anchored outside the port in what was defined as a three-month backlog. Another positive at Transnet has been the return of some experienced faces, and the appointment of some new faces in the last "two, three weeks", all working to reverse the fortunes of the group, which has seen a dramatic decline in rail and port volumes and efficiencies over the last two to three years. Many of these newcomers have been seconded from the private sector, which is now also footing the bill for their salaries, says Havenga. "Some solid skills remained in Transnet, but their contribution dwindled because of a toxic culture created by the previous management. Michelle and her team are turning this around." Transnet's decline has frustrated SA Inc to no end, as it has stymied mine development, mineral exports, fruit exports, as well as the retail and manufacturing sectors, to name but a few segments of the economy heavily dependent on the country's import and export corridors. "People are angry, and rightfully so," says Havenga. He attributes the decline at Transnet to poor leadership under former Transnet group CEO Portia Derby and her team, who he believes lacked the knowledge and experience to lead the group. The team also seemed unwilling participants in the NLCC. The decline seen under this management team - which departed last year - was worse than that seen during the State capture years, says Havenga. "They hid the poor performance behind the notion of the poor availability of locomotives, while issues such as infrastructure, operating systems and skilled staff were all eroding." The reversal of Transnet will require a turnaround on all levels, says Havenga. "Transnet is broken on all four levels - rolling stock, infrastructure, skilled staff and operating systems. "Given the scope of damage, it will take time. Last year was the worst year in Transnet's history, but I believe the foundations are being put in place to fix the problem. "But, as I noted, we have interim leaders. We need permanent appointments. Interim management does not have the legal scope to do everything that is required in the case of Transnet. If these permanent appointments do not happen soon, it could jeopardise the progress we have seen to date. "Two mistakes can be made here," says Havenga. "The wrong people can be appointed, or it takes too long to make the appointments. "If this happens, we are in serious, serious trouble as a country. "The scope of job losses would multiply, leaving South Africa vulne...

In a recent episode of 'The Joe Rogan Experience', the host vividly recounted an electrifying incident that took place at UFC 287. The night unfolded with a surprise appearance from the 45th President and a potential frontrunner for the Republican presidential ticket, Donald Trump. Rogan depicted the atmosphere as utterly surreal, equating it to a scene straight out of a hard-hitting action thriller. Rogan's words echoed the excitement that permeated Madison Square Garden that memorable Saturday. He portrayed the surprise appearance of Trump and his entourage, whom he playfully referred to as the 'conservative superheroes', a moment that sent shockwaves through the crowd. The DC Enquirer had earlier reported that an unexpected touch to the evening came in the form of thousands of UFC enthusiasts witnessing Donald Trump march into the venue. With him were some iconic conservative figures: the incisive Tucker Carlson, the dynamic UFC mastermind Dana White, the inimitable musician Kid Rock, and boxing legend Mike Tyson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"I went through multiple stages of a job search process and was told that I 'did very well,' so waited for an offer.  After my peers had long received job offers, I had to reach back out to the institution I wanted to work at, then finally got an email that stated: 'your references are great, your interview was great, and you have skill sets we could use, but we decided to go a different direction with someone who 'fits' better with our office.'  I had the natural tendency to feel hurt at the rejection, but a different feeling also came up:  one of confusion.  I emailed back 'what didn't go well, can you share what I could have done better?'  A few emails later, the employer told me they couldn't legally give me feedback, but that I did very well and didn't have much else to tell me. So, if I did so well and my skills were useful, why didn't I get the job?"   After this experience, DaShawn Dilworth really honed in on the term "fit" as part of the hiring process and job experience overall. In his research (see his article Elephants in the Room: Examining and Understanding the Black Assembly Line, p. 20), he found that this term is meant to hide in plain site the various prejudice and biases found in the workplace.  His research dives into equity and justice throughout the hiring process and at work. This episode was incredible; not only does he talk through his research findings but also gives very real tips to move away from thinking about the term "fit" during hiring processes.    About DaShawn:  Writer. Researcher. SA Pro. Hustler. All these identities and more define DaShawn. As a recent graduate of the Higher Education program at Florida State University, DaShawn currently conducts qualitative research as part of his day job. In his own time, he enjoys writing and creating innovative ways to tell stories we often don't hear. On this episode, against the backdrop of Myanmar's Civil Disobedience Movement that arose in the wake of the military junta's coup of 1 February 2021, I speak to acclaimed Burmese artist Moe Satt about his performance- and multimedia- based practice. We talk about how visual arts practitioners navigate censorship and restraints on civil liberties. We also discuss the way in which Myanmar's independent cultural organisations like AMCA are engaging in visual activism, how Generation Z and Boomers alike are splitting up across the virtual and actual domains and joining hands against the junta and, indeed, the importance of hands as symbols of solidarity in Moe's work, which we discuss in detail. 'The Right Direction To Go In': Former Mass. Education Secretary Reville On Gov. Baker's Push To Reopen Schools

Speaking on Boston Public Radio Thursday, former Mass. education secretary Paul Reville expressed support for a proposal presented Tuesday by the Baker administration, effectively forcing elementary classrooms to reopen by April. "I do think it’s the right direction to go in,” he said, citing decreasing COVID-19 cases in the state, and increasing knowledge about how to conduct in-person learning safely. He acknowledged, though, that the process is likely to be "complicated and controversial.” During the announcement earlier this week, Education Commissioner Jeffery Riley said he plans to ask schools in March to give him authority to determine when hybrid and remote learning models no longer count towards state-mandated learning hours. He added that the goal is to bring elementary student back by April, followed by middle and high school students “later in the school year." "It is not a set mandate,” Reville explained, calling the proposal an “indirect route” to getting children back in classrooms. “The governor has not done something he could do, which is declare emergency powers and mandate and require local districts to do it.” "I think the motivation and the statistics they’re citing, particularly on children’s mental health issues, is really compelling when you take a look at the number of cries for help that are coming in and being unmet by the mental health system,” he said, “many of which were being met in some way shape or form by school, or by virtue of being in schools.” Reville is the former Mass. secretary of education and a professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, where he also heads the Education Redesign Lab. His latest book, co-authored with Elaine Weiss, is: "Broader, Bolder, Better: How Schools and communities help Students Overcome the Disadvantages of Poverty.”

This week we're joined by Ron Keel for an insightful conversation on his career and future plans. As recently announced, Ron has been added to the roster for ROCKNPOD weekend taking place in Nashville this August. In this conversation, Ron talks about his early days in Nashville. Coming to Music City in 1979, Ron encountered a much different Nashville than the way it is today. In this discussion, he shares stories of what led him to Nashville, the rock scene at the time (or lack thereof), and how he planted roots and founded Steeler. The formation of Steeler would lead Ron and the band to Los Angeles in the early 80's. In this conversation, Ron shares the story of the band's early days, lineup changes, and how he feels about the legacy of the band. Things would go full-circle in 2019 when Ron reunited with several past members of the band at KEELFEST which would take place at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, OH. It was a great way to cap off the history of Steeler.Steeler would give way to the formation of KEEL. The band would ascend the rock ranks through the 80's and work with producers like Mike Varney, Gene Simmons and Michael Wagener. In 1986, Keel won the Best Band of the Year award in the second annual Metal Edge magazine reader's poll, beating such noted bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Their studio albums 'The Right to Rock,' 'The Final Frontier,' and 'Keel' are celebrated by many hard rock fans. 2010's 'Streets of Rock n' Roll' showed the band could still rock with the best of them. From that first Steeler album to recent releases like “South X South Dakota” and “Fight Like A Band,” Ron Keel's 35-year career in entertainment has taken him from the concrete jungles of arena rock to the dirt roads of country music. Along the way, he has sold millions of albums and toured the world as both a heavy metal screamer (KEEL, Steeler, and a brief encounter with Black Sabbath) and a southern rock/outlaw country artist (with dozens of songs in major films and TV shows). For the past two decades, the Metal Cowboy has combined both genres, establishing a style and a persona which captures the heart and personality of this self-proclaimed rock n' roll outlaw. In this conversation, Ron talks about the great connection he has with his fans. His following spans generations and he regularly interacts with them through his Patreon content which is uploaded constantly. He also shares some details of an upcoming album that he's working on as songs continue to flow. Additionally, Ron hosts his longtime radio show 'Streets of Rock n' Roll' and 'The Ron Keel Podcast,' both of which feature tons of great music and great interviews. We had a great time talking to Ron Keel this week and look forward to seeing him at ROCKNPOD in Nashville this August! Kate Hawkesby: 'The right result in the cannabis referendum'

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Well what a relief Friday was.The right result in the cannabis referendum – although it’s preliminary and given how this year’s gone I wouldn’t rule anything out in terms of upsets or dramatic swings... it could still tip over to a yes with specials, but it’s a very very long shot.Chloe says she’s proud of her campaign, but critics would argue she didn’t have one – apart from her appearing on every media platform she could. For a Greens backed referendum it probably needed more Greens than just her pushing it.I found the pro-campaign heavily one sided. It was bolstered by the Drug Foundation and Helen Clark... all of whom put out endless amounts of information, or should I say misinformation – from it being about medicinal, to it coming out of the hands of gangs -which was never going to happen. There was a lot of propaganda peddled and I worried New Zealanders would fall for it if they didn’t do their own research. The preliminary results reassuringly show Kiwis didn’t fall for it. Although Chloe argues it’s on a knife edge – 53% to 46% is not a knife edge.. it’s a gap of 7 percent. She also lashed out at Jacinda Ardern for not stating which way she’d vote, that in some way the acolytes of Jacinda would've followed her like sheep if she’d promoted a yes vote. But the PM didn’t want to alienate centrist voters, she sat on the fence with it because that’s what populists do. Jacinda wanted to win votes more than she wanted to win the cannabis referendum and that’s the result she got.Decriminalisation may’ve worked, but I think legalization was a bridge too far. I don’t know why we’d want to rush something as serious as this, I would’ve thought waiting to see how other countries go, would be the smart move. Why would we want our little nation to be guinea pigs for something as serious as drug reform? But the fact it got pitched in the first place as a do or die ultimatum of the Greens supporting the Coalition government last time round, shows the sort of stuff the Greens are obsessed with. It only reinforces how important it is they’re nowhere near the reins of power this time round. And Jacinda Ardern knows it. The greatest thing those soft centre voters offered the country by ticking red this year to keep the Greens out, is that we don’t have Julie Anne Genter in charge of anything. For that we should be eternally grateful. The new cabinet line-up gets announced today and you have to wonder if Phil Twyford will remain in charge of economic development. Hopefully he doesn’t, but the PM seems to back him, even though he’s failed at pretty much everything he’s turned his hand to. And that will be the true test of this new government… how much progress actually gets made, how much delivery we actually see, how much they abandon ‘transformation’ for treading water. But also, how much hustle they put up with from the Greens… who’re still promising to push their wealth tax agenda. It’ll be an interesting 3 years. I’m just grateful there won’t be more Kiwis stoned than usual to witness it.
