"May the Force Be With You," and also May The 4th Be With You.The Holmes Brothers head back to the world of Star Wars to review The Prequel Trilogy. We're back with another Trilogies episode. The films in the trilogy include Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005). Revenge of the Sith is currently being re-released in select cinemas to coincide with its twenty year anniversary. Before the rights of LucasFilm and the world of Star Wars were sold to Disney, George Lucas came back to finish the Star Wars saga with the Prequels. Whether you like the films or not, cinema and visual effects technology caught up with Lucas's vision and he was able to tell the full story in the way that he envisioned. He could finally show Podracers, Gungans, the planet Coruscant and also show how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. There was a lot of hype and expectations around these films. Back in 1999 before the release of Episode I, people would buy tickets to other films just to see the trailer and then leave. This is way before YouTube. Today there has been a slight reappraisal of the films from some corners of cinema fans and lovers of all things Star Wars, compared to the critical bashing they all got during their original releases from fans, filmmakers and critics. The films were not as popular as the Original Trilogy. They did not receive the same love and acclaim at the time and a lot of the criticisms the films got were due to the writing, storytelling, characterisation and sometimes the VFX. Now many years later, where do you think we land on the films? Listen to the episode and find out.We hope you like this episode and stay tuned for more Trilogies episode. The next episode will be on The War Trilogy, directed by Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel, the famous location is featured briefly in one of the films.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen in the western The Outlaws, The films is a available to watch in America , parts of Scandinavia (e.g. Denmark, Finland) & the United Kingdom on Amazon and also Apple TV. In this bonus book club episode, Marisa Serafini (@SerafiniTV) and I delve into RF Kuang's final book in The Poppy War trilogy, called The Burning God. In this final chapter, after saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead. Despite her losses, Rin hasn't given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much—the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges—and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation. Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix's intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it? Join the conversation! In this bonus book club episode, Marisa Serafini (@SerafiniTV) and I delve into RF Kuang's follow-up to The Poppy War, called The Dragon Republic. In this sequel, the war is over. The war has just begun. Three times throughout its history, Nikan has fought for its survival in the bloody Poppy Wars. Though the third battle has just ended, shaman and warrior Rin cannot forget the atrocity she committed to save her people. Now she is on the run from her guilt, the opium addiction that holds her like a vice, and the murderous commands of the fiery Phoenix—the vengeful god who has blessed Rin with her fearsome power. Though she does not want to live, she refuses to die until she avenges the traitorous Empress who betrayed Rin's homeland to its enemies. Her only hope is to join forces with the powerful Dragon Warlord, who plots to conquer Nikan, unseat the Empress, and create a new republic. But neither the Empress nor the Dragon Warlord are what they seem. The more Rin witnesses, the more she fears her love for Nikan will force her to use the Phoenix's deadly power once more. Because there is nothing Rin won't sacrifice to save her country . . . and exact her vengeance. Join the conversation! Today we are venturing into the Sovan Empire with our guest Richard Swan, author of THE TYRANNY OF FAITH, the second book in the EMPIRE OF THE WOLF trilogy. Tarot Deck of the day: Epic Tarot Tarot card guiding the episode: The Keeper of Mysteries (The High Priestess in traditional decks) Magical Challenge set for the character: retrieve answers from the beyond. (Hint: necromancy is involved) Nola's takeaway: Will there be mermen in the next book? (Seriously, Orbit, we want the mermen.) About the author: Richard Swan was born in North Yorkshire and spent most of his early life on Royal Air Force bases in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. After studying law at the University of Manchester, Richard was Called to the Bar in 2011. He subsequently retrained as a solicitor specialising in commercial litigation. Between 2015 and 2018, Richard self-published "The Art of War Trilogy", a sequence of epic space opera novels, as well as a prequel ("Hadan's Reach") and two spinoff mil-sci-fi novellas ("VIPER One", and "VIPER One: Countervalue", the latter co-authored with George Lockett). Richard's debut fantasy "Empire of the Wolf" trilogy sold to Orbit Books for a six-figure sum. In the fourth episode of Season 8 (Coming-of-Ages) Kyle is joined by screenwriter Gio Maldonado and streamer Daniel Lopez to discuss Roberto Rossellini's bold neo-realist portrait of the rubble and ruin of World War II's ground zero and the shamed populace at its center in the humanistic and challenging Germany, Year Zero (1948).
Much has been written about the European Theater in World War II. But the war in the Pacific Theater was the largest naval war ever fought. It covered the entire breadth of the Pacific Ocean, and much of the fighting took place in remote, wild environments. How did the conflict impact those environments heretofore untouched by the outside world? And what about the Indigenous peoples who lived there? Ian W. Toll is the author of Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the US Navy and the Pacific War Trilogy—Pacific Crucible, The Conquering Tide, and Twilight of the Gods. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Ian joins Ross to explain how airbases were built on hundreds of Pacific islands during WWII and describe how the scale of development radically and irrevocably changed the ecosystems there. Ian discusses how hundreds of shipwrecks from WWII have the potential to turn into environmental disasters at any time and weighs in on what we can do to avoid a modern-day war in the Pacific—and why it's crucial. Listen in for Ian's insight on the logistical prowess of the US to ramp up shipbuilding during WWII and find out why Admiral Halsey ranked the bulldozer among the five most important weapons of the Pacific War. Richard's debut fantasy Empire of the Wolf trilogy sold to Orbit Books, with the first instalment, The Justice of Kings, coming out in February 2022 and hitting the Sunday Time bestseller list.We had great fun chatting with Richard and hearing how his love of sci fi led to a serious writing habit from when he was a teenager. We talk about his self-published SF books and discuss whether they impacted his later success as a "debut" author with the brilliant The Justice of Kings. We also discuss the verisimilitude that occurs when bringing in your own experiences into your writing and much more!Links:Buy Richard's booksFollow Richard on TwitterVisit Richard's websitePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. This week we kick off Robert Rossellini's War Trilogy, a boxset of the Italian director's films from the end of World War 2 and the beginning of the Neo-realist movement. First up is Rome, Open City, a movie that codifies Rossellini's neo-realist style out of necessity instead of ideology. This episode is a bit late because the laptop I have recorded Lost in Criterion since 2013 on died. RIP the macbook I promised myself I would keep for a full decade in order to justify the cost. You almost made it.

In perspective of playing the new game, I got to thinking of how lonely it must've been for Kratos in the original trilogy. Just killing and solving puzzles all while seeking revenge and at the employment of the Greek Gods. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/max-worthington/support

Andi and Lise lost their sh*t when award-winning sci fi/fantasy writer Kameron Hurley agreed to chat with them about writing and her very latest release, which just dropped March 19, The Light Brigade. Hurley’s website bio states she’s a writer “specializing in war and resistance movements,” but she’s also known as one of the most important voices in the field engaging in intense world-building and explorations of gender, sexuality, and politics. You may know her for her essay collection Geek Feminist Revolution, which included the Hugo-winning essay “We Have Always Fought: Challenging the ‘Women, Cattle, and Slaves’ Narrative.” She is the author of the fantasy series the Worldbreaker Saga; the Bel Dame Apocrypha (God’s War Trilogy), and the space opera The Stars Are Legion (which Andi and Lise raved about in episode 19). On this episode of LGO, Hurley dished about writing, her own process (upshot: writing is hard!!!!), her work, and specifically about The Light Brigade, which has been described by a reviewer as a cross between Starship Troopers and Edge of Tomorrow. Another reviewer described it as a “time-twisting, genre-redefining military science fiction novel.” Thank you, Kameron, for joining us! Al and Brantley take on movies they haven't seen based on nothing but their weird descriptions. This week's movies are all from the Art of War series. Sometimes it stars Wesley Snipes, sometimes Wesley Snipes is in prison for tax evasion and the movie stars some random guy from a band we've never heard of.
The second in Roberto Rossellini's "War Trilogy", Paisan (1946) is one of the first examples of Italian neorealism. Split into six separate segments (or chapters), each written by a different screenwriter, the film tells the stories of the Italians and Americans in the final days of World War II. Laced with tragic irony as well as bit of comic wit, the film is probably Rossellini's most popular films of the 1940's after Rome Open City (1945). Have a comment or a question for the host? Email Sean at 1001moviespodcast@gmail.com or contact him on Twitter at @1001MoviesPC.
Sebastian DiNatale and Brian Fiddyment return to watch and discuss Roberto Rossellini's first entry in his War Trilogy, Rome, Open City.
