We have made progress on our new fitness app, currently codenamed, "Bento Fit." This week we provide an update about the UI, using local Swift Packages for modularization of the codebase, creating custom HealthKit metrics, thoughts on data persistence and syncing, and next steps. Plus, tangents about running local LLMs, the fortunes of COBOL programmers, and some really bad monetization ideas. If you want to get into the headspace of some developers working on a side project, this was basically our project meeting recorded, so enjoy, tangents and all!## Show Notes- Bento Fit Progress Report - https://9to5mac.com/2025/02/08/indie-app-spotlight-bentocraft/ - Temp App Icon - Very basic layout for home view - Settings view placeholder - Add view placeholder - HealthKit permissions - WatchKit integration - SPM refactor - https://www.swiftystack.com - Aaron running miles by week adventure- Stats we want to focus on - Heart metrics - Running miles per week - Caffeine / nutrients consumed- Impromptu monetization discussion - Customized metrics for IAP- How to save preference data - Shared keychain items - Swift Data / CloudKit - NSUbiquitousKeyValueStore- Tangents on Cobol, PS5, etc.- Next Steps - Explore app's personality using Sketch - Add HealthKit metrics - Add tests - Xcode Cloud setup - Add ability to add/remove cards from UI- Wrap-Up - http://phillycocoa.org- Not a Sponsor: https://miovino.app## Chapters00:00 Introductions01:09 Catch-up on Bento Fit History07:12 Bento Fit Progress Update09:03 Bento Fit Progress: Local Swift Package Refactor14:22 Bento Fit Progress: Custom HealthKit Metric17:26 Exploring HealthKit Metrics24:03 Tangent: Bad Monetization Ideas26:07 Tangent: Studio Display is Still Expensive!27:24 Tangent: More Realistic Monetization Strategies28:50 Dogfooding the Prototype31:04 Data Persistence and Syncing Strategies39:33 Tangent: Local LLMs44:48 Tangent: The Fortunes of COBOL Developers47:40 Bento Fit Next Steps01:00:53 Wrap-Up: http://phillycocoa.org01:01:14 Not a Sponsor: https://miovino.app01:03:56 TagIntro music: "When I Hit the Floor", © 2021 Lorne Behrman. Among the topics we did hit: app thinning, Bitcode, WatchKit 2.0, CloudKit (and opening it up to web developers), Swift 2.0, Metal coming to the Mac, accessibility and low-level support for right-to-left languages, iOS 9’s new low-power mode, and more.

Followup Poslao nam Sloba: A man just got a pretty hefty fine for using his Apple Watch while driving Hvalio nas Sloba: Zaista odlicna epizoda. Uzivao sam izistinski. Leading with follow-up, Jake touches on his experiences with developing a WatchKit after having talked to David, how he’s fetching the content for his glance, and how the Swings analogy made him rethink the way he was trying to lay out his views (and thus making his efforts more successful). After getting nostalgic about a listener-submitted Codewarrior mug, Jake talks a little about the various Steve Jobs biographies he’s read, before touching on some assert related feedback. This leads Ben to pose the question about whether you should leave asserts on, or remove them for release code. The couch discusses where people use asserts, and in what cases you might actually want to ship asserts rather than displaying an error. Moving on, Jake asks if Ben has any opinions on testing, and this leads into a discussion about unit testing, and what exactly a unit test should cover. From the conversation expands to cover various other kinds of testing, like integration testing, and UI testing with UI automation. As they start wrapping up, Jake mentions that the bit he likes about unit testing is that it makes him think about the structure of his code, which Jelly believes he already does. In fact, he believes that if you’re relying on testing to structure your thinking, you’re doing it wrong. This prompts Ben to ask about how Jelly approaches his code, which Jelly answers by roughly describing his process when he built Static Tables. Laying out blank classes and methods to create a basic structure, fleshing them out, then writing an example app for testing. Finally, Jake adds that Playgrounds are what got him started on unit testing in the first place. He loves the concept of code being executed as he’s writing it, but the lack of external frameworks lead him to trying out unit testing.
James and Matt discuss Apple Watch try-on sessions, user experience, development, and predictions about future generations. In this episode we’re down one Alex but Sam & Alex Argo manage to discuss various topics trending in the iOS and mobile world from the past week. React Native from Facebook was first up followed by a discussion about life & revenue on the App Store. They then discuss their opinions on the new iOS Beta 5 and WatchKit. Finally a discussion around an interesting tool to help identify all of the Copy Pasta in a larger app evolved out of a couple edited awkward moments.
Brad Ellis joins Marc, Seth, and Rene to talk about WatchKit and designing for the Apple Watch, including screen size, remote views, and what makes the most sense.
This week Myke is joined by David Smith. They talk about the Apple WATCH, developing for it with Watchkit and how David is sharing what he learns.
Special guest Rene Ritchie returns to the show for a special Apple 2014 year-in-review episode. Just a few of the many topics covered: Apple’s Beats acquisition; WWDC 2014 in hindsight; an aside speculating on the alternate universe where Google acquired WebOS instead of Android; the similarities between the “projected UI” nature of AirPlay, CarPlay, and WatchKit; UI fonts (Helvetica Neue in Yosemite, Apple Sans, and the Watch’s San Francisco (a.k.a. “DINvetica”)); Apple’s growing ability to design and bring to market its own hardware internals and components; recent controversies and confusing rejections at the App Store (and the need for a public-facing App Store ombudsman); and what we’re looking forward to in 2015.
Jelly’s done his homework, so the couch explores his solution to getting a scrollview to page with peeking content. They also weigh in on Watchkit, discussing the way it works and what the future implications might be. Like all the cool shows, this one starts with the intro, or at least it tries, as Jake leads everyone off track into discussion of podcasts (specifically Chat 10 Looks 3, Serial and Start Up), as well as their style and sound quality. Finally getting themselves into gear, Jelly starts the discussion with the results of the bet about getting a scrollview to “page” with content that peeks on either side of the frame. Jake explains the problem he had, and then Jelly explains how he tackled the issue, as well as what he did with his results. More follow-up about Swift brings discussion of a listener-submitted Swift style guide, and the oddities about the optional language syntax. This leads to Jake admitting that maybe he’s still not clear about a few things, like how type inference works… or how arrays work, for that matter. Jelly brings up the topic of Watchkit, which has been out for a few weeks now. Even though none of the three have actually done anything with the framework, they decide to weigh in with their first impressions. This inevitably becomes a discussion about the potential of WatchKit, and how the iPhone’s ecosystem was moved forward by “misuse” of API features. Ben asks Jelly, as a hold-out on Storyboards, what he thinks about the fact that Watchkit apps are storyboard only. This, of course, leads Jake to get all excited and start explaining how he implemented IB_DESIGNABLE with a class and has fallen in love with it. Taking all of this back to Watchkit, Jelly points out that the “storyboards only” approach — which he’s totally cool with, by the way — might be suggestive of where Apple is trying to go with app development overall.
WatchKit was recently announced to permit apps to be developed for the Apple Watch, so today we discuss what we got and what business opportunities might now be available to us. We discuss why Joe’s excited for the Apple Watch and Charles isn’t, business models for WatchKit apps, the difference between a hobbyist and business […]

Thinking out loud about why I recently starting my series called As I Learn WatchKit. I’ve learned a lot about the creative process by giving myself permission to put unpolished things into the world. My first attempt at Youtube Then, I dive into the economics of building WatchKit apps. In general I think that the economic realities of building apps for it are consistent with any other app endeavor. If it was a good idea before it is likely doubly so to add a Watch extension. If it is a new idea you have a great opportunity to be an early adopter.
