Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Every band/artist has to have a first album.  Sometimes those albums are good, sometimes they're not, and sometimes they just show potential.  This episode, we look at some first albums over the gamut of the rock era that we regard as great, including some Australian albums. You've probably heard of most, but not all. In rock news, we look at Neil Young, The Wiggles (yes!), Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull and Billboard's new list – The Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century.  Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Mick regards this elegant 1973 album from the Velvet Underground co-founder as a stunning listen, and a great intro to John Cale.  Chris Thomas' production is, as usual, precise, while Cale presents some wonderful imagery in the lyrics.   References:  John Cale, Paris 1919, “A Child's Christmas in Wales”, Fragments of a Rainy Season, Brian Wilson, UCLA Symphony Orchestra, Words for the Dying, Dylan Thomas, Chris Thomas, Roxy Music, Eno, Sex Pistols, Pretenders, INXS, Bowie, Lou Reed, Queen, The Police, Outlandos d'Amour, “Can't Stand Losing You”, “Roxanne”, Stewart Copeland, Sting, Rod Stewart, The Tubes, “White Punks on Dope”, “What do you want from life?”, “a baby's arm holding an apple”, Kate Bush, The Kick Inside, David Gilmour, “Wuthering Heights”, Wuthering Heights Day, Roxy Music, Kari-Ann Moller, Chris Jagger, Andy Mackay, saxophone, “Re-make / Re-model", Bryan Ferry, Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, “Do it Again”, “Reelin' in the Years”, “Only a fool would say that”, John Lennon, Imagine, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, "10:15 Saturday Night", Robert Smith, Television, Marquee Moon, Devo, Q: Are We Not Men? We're back for round two! Cody and Hilary examine the beginnings of DEVO and their inimitable first album - "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO!" (Cody fumbles the title in the intro. Don't worry, we're pointing and laughing too!)DEVO's debut put the world on notice of something uncompromisingly different. From a wild Stones cover to crashing a Sun Ra show, DEVO has always - unapologetically - been themselves. We'll peek a bit behind the curtain to see how this record was rooted in a pivotal event in U.S. history. Thanks for listening! From James Joyce (Three on the Ones and Twos Cohost): DEVO is one of my favorite bands of all time – in fact, I don't even consider them a “band” but really an artistic movement, philosophy and way of life. These five weirdos from Ohio created a place for themselves as true artists, making music, videos, graphic design that has lasted an entire lifetime, all of this both inside and outside mainstream culture and business worlds, with a great sense of humor, absurdity and fun. They are truly subversive in so many ways and massively influential - everyone has a picture of DEVO in their mind, but when you really pay attention to what they are truly saying and doing, you see how deep and profound the message becomes. And their message of De-Evolution only gets more and more relevant as time goes on – no other band has prepared us for modern times more than DEVO. De-Evolution is Real - Duty Now for the Future! From Cassy (Three on the Ones and Twos Cohost): This one is really special. Devo is one of those bands that a ton of music we love wouldn't be the same without. There's no denying their legacy is imperative to the formation of new wave, electronic and even performance art as we know those things to be today. In Episode 56, Me, Tom and James (aka 1499) sit down with good friend, musician and Three on the Ones and Twos team member, Brian Kincheloe, to discuss the first release from this iconic band, the incredible Q: Are We Not Me? A: We Are Devo! The Mothersbaugh brothers, Casale brothers along with Alan Myers on drums had such a unique perspective right out of the gate - backed up with the talent needed to execute it -  that the likes of legends Iggy Pop, Robert Fripp, David Bowie and Brian Eno (who won out in the end) vied for the opportunity to produce their debut record. That's crazy impressive! The end result is this phenomenal masterpiece which we enjoyed discussing immensely. Watch until the end for the Cameo video from Jerry Casale that Sue got James a year and a half ago for Christmas along with a short clip of Devo's fantastic performance from last year's Cruel World festival. And in the famous words of the man himself, de-evolution is real! Cheers!

The end is nigh for the Second Doctor as the TARDIS crew arrive in what appears to be World War One, but not all is as it seems… Continuing our journey through all of Doctor Who, we discuss the first half of the absolute epic that is The War Games, as we start preparing to bid farewell to some familiar faces…   During the episode, Reilly finds himself disappointed by the fact that Doctor von Werr doesn’t make one last return, Anthony gets to use his history degrees, Don sets a new record in how quickly he derails the conversation, and Julie gets exasperated at everyone else’s constant digressions. The entire crew discusses the commentary that this story provides on the entire Troughton era.   For those of you who want to watch this along with us, this story is available on DVD (Amazon US | Amazon UK), as well as through the BritBox streaming service (US link | UK link)   Other media mentioned in this episode: Oh! Patrick Grant, creator of Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars,  introduces me to an album that I long avoided because I thought it might be “scary,” but his quest is to show us that it's just scary good. The album in question is Devo's “Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!”, and Patrick breaks down the album's many innovations. We also talked about Switched On Bach, Patrick's interactions with Devo and Robert Fripp and his project, Tilted Axes.Patrick referred to alternate versions of some of the tracks on Are We Not Men. You can listen to those B Stiff EP versions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhwCQdBK2XY.Here is a link to the Devo performance on SNL that was the starting point for Patrick's fandom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04pbtf5t_LU.Places online to find Patrick: patrickgrant.com, strangemusic.com and tiltedaxes.comYou can find me on Twitter at @almelchiorBB and @youmealbum. Explore Bias, Smash Patriarchy, Dig Devo! Content Warning: Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, Language (The Leftscape... Now with Even More Cursing!)   What are the tapes that run in your head? Which beliefs and thought patterns are hidden in your psyche that show up and catch you unaware? What is the assumption behind what you are drawn to and what you avoid? Which preferences are you comfortable with? Which are prejudices that you work to release? Sparked by the main topic in "When Things Blow Up (Episode 15)," Robin Renée, Mary McGinley, and Wendy Sheridan reflect on some of their own personal biases regarding gender, intelligence, race, ethnicity, and culture. The week's news, still dominated by the Kavanaugh nomination and its fallout, includes the protests at Yale by those who oppose the nomination, and the power and personal impact of #whyididntreport. The conversation morphs into a righteous rant on sexual harassment in the workplace and anywhere/everywhere else. Wendy is mad as hell, and for good reason. The show begins by welcoming October with mentions of only a sampling of the month's observances: Self-Promotion Month, Vegetarian Month, Squirrel Awareness Month, Bat Appreciation Month, World Menopause Month, Feral Hog Month, and Sarcasm Month are a few. October 3rd is the date in 1952 that the UK tested its first atomic bomb. On the same date in 1995, O.J. Simpson was acquitted. The first Wednesday in October is also National Kale Day. In the "Why is this Awesome?" segment, Robin sings the praises of Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! 34 days left until election day. Shock World Service 040 Now is Come a Darker Day – A Best of Compilation by Jon Averill 18/01/2011 London, United Kingdom 1. Final Fantasy - The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead (Many Lives Version) The Canadian violinist Final Fantasy (now just known as Owen Pallet after some minor legal wrangling with a well known video game's lawyers) has featured numerous times on the World Service. This track is his best known and seemed like a polite way to kick off proceedings. - From Episode #015 2. Tuxedomoon - In a Manner of Speaking One of my favourite tracks ever from San Francisco's Tuxedomoon. Formed in 1977 by multi-instrumentalists Blaine L. Reininger and Steven Brown, then two students of electronic music at San Francisco City College. This track is taken from the album 'Holy Wars'. Anyone else think the vocal that comes in around 2 mins 30 secs in sounds like a bad Bowie impersonator? - From Episode #032 3. John Carpenter - The Windows A transient piece taken from the much lauded and hugely influential 1976 'Assault on Precinct 13' soundtrack. - From Episode #033 4. Miracle Fortress - Beach Baby I'm not a massive fan of Canada's Miracle Fortress but Beach Baby is a track I adore. Cathedralesque reverb underpins this psychedelic pop track. - From Episode #015 5. Mr Hopkinson's Computer - Crazy Mr Hopkinson's Computer sings novelty cover versions with varying degrees of success. Taken from our very first episode back on 2007. - From Episode #001 6. Goblin - Suspiria (Main Title) A proper spine-chilling piece of horror music from genre-masters Goblin. - From Episode #033 7. Luke Vibert - Sharp A2 This is a rare Luke Vibert track taken from the Mo' Wax compilation 'Headz 2'. - From Episode #032 8. Moondog – Couplet The short spoken word piece comes from Moondog, most definitely an act worthy of further research. Living on the streets of New York for over 30 years dressed in clothes based on his interpretation of the Norse god Thor. - From Episode #032 9. Brian Eno - The Big Ship So many Eno tracks have featured on the World Service over the last four years it was very hard to chose one for the best of. I eventually settled for 'The Big Ship'. - From Episode #029 10. Chocolate Witch Band - I'm Not Like Everybody Else San Jose psych-rock in the form of a cover version from The Chocolate Witch Band. - From Episode #009 11. Devo - Gut Feeling Originally appears on their 1978 album 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!' which is well worth picking up if you're not already familiar with the strange world of Devo. - From Episode #015 11. Memory Cassette - Asleep At A Party Phil Spectoresque Wall of Sound drums juxtaposed with otherworldly, childlike vocals. - From Episode #019 12. Talk Talk - New Grass One of Talk Talk's gentler moments, 'New Grass' undulates and flows river-like through inventive arrangement & melodies. - From Episode #024 13. Rev AW Nix - Black Diamond Express To Hell The Reverend AW Nix was a 1920s hellfire preacher intent on terrifying sinners onto the path of virtue with gospel influenced sermons that are now considered as musical in their own right. - From Episode #026 14. Of Montreal - The Past Is A Grotesque Animal An uncompromising pièce of power pop from Of Montreal with with literary references such as Georges Bataille's 'The Story Of The Eye'. - From Episode #009 15. Ola & The Janglers This crackly old track from Ola & The Janglers sounds like the epilogue of the universe, dramatic & overstated with every emotion amplified to the point of distortion. - From Episode #015
